Recently moved from Fort Luaderdale, FL. And was hoping to get back
into playing beach volleyball? I usually played 2-3 times a week in
FLorida with A/AA level players and some open players. Was just
wondering if there was pickup at Jaycee or other places ever on
weekends or evenings. Also looking for people to play co-ed or womens
BB so my wife can get out on the sand again. Neither of us has played
since we moved here and are itching to get back to it. THanks. Mark

Happy Tuesday!

I know it's still several months away but I wanted to put feelers out and see if anyone is interested in going to see the AVP men and women playing in Charleston on June 15-17th and possibly purchasing group General Admission tickets. The more the merrier!

They don't have a whole lot of details posted yet (here's the website for the tourney http://www.avp.com/events/index.jsp?eventId=1010) but I was thinking we could purchase tickets to take advantage of the group discount. I think we'll need at least 15 people to get the group discount price, which is probably $17 per session.

At any rate, keep this in the back of your mind if you were planning to go (or if you hadn't thought about it, give it some thought) and drop me an email so I'll have an idea if this is worth the trouble or not. There's no commitment now on your part, just let me know if you'd be interested.

More to follow...

Vaughn

I'm looking for a DIGS team to play on this year. DIGS is in Virgina
Beach on 5/5 and I assume it is still a coed grass sixes format.

Outside, setter, back row, whatever you need. Preferably BB or A.

I also don't mind putting together a team if there is enough interest.
Please let me know either way.

Thanks!

OK, I played grass for the first time last season in the K/Q tourneys and loved it.  Thanks to you all for making my first experience enjoyable.  I am really wanting to get into sand also.  I would love to play some women's and some co-ed (do they have co-ed sand?).  I'm not sure what level but I'd like to do silver and maybe try some gold.  Anyway, I'm just especially interested in getting a  sand partner man/woman.  I'm 5'6" female with a consistent serve.  I'm a good defender, good passer, and am pretty good at setting my partner up.  I know I'm short but I'd like to think I'm somewhat smart and placing the ball.  I know sand is different, and I really want to learn.  Anyone willing to take a chance on me?  If you take me for one tournament, I won't be offended if you drop me...promise:)  I'm even up for anyone who is missing a partner and just needs me for one tourney.  Thanks!

Does anybody know of any pick up volleyball going on this summer in
the Winston Salem area? Or maybe around Clemmons? I heard Polo park in
Winston might have some open gym nights, but I was looking for some
outdoor courts. Clemmons west used to have a few games, but it's been
years since I've been there. Last year at the end of the summer I
found out that a few people were playing at Speas Elementary School,
but I didn't get a chance to play. Anyone know if they will be having
it again this year?

Thanks,

This is a bit off topic, but in case you haven’t heard there’s a massive pet food recall for over 60 million containers of cat and dog food.  At least ten pets have died and many more are suffering kidney failure due to an unspecified problem with the recalled foods.

It’s the largest pet food recall I’ve ever heard of and seems to span most major brands (Iams, Eukanuba, Purina, Science Diet, Nutro, Ol’ Roy, Authority, etc.) and major retailers (Wal-Mart, Kroger, Food Lion, Safeway, Publix, Price Chopper, etc.), but it does apply only to wet or moist canned and pouched foods – no dry foods or biscuit treats are being recalled.

Moral of the story – check out the links below and if you have any of the foods, stop using them immediately.  If your cat or dog is showing any signs of vomiting or lethargy, or is refusing to eat its food, take it to your vet asap.

Hey gang,

My team is not going to USAV Nationals, but I'd like to. Big time.
I'm an OH. Good hitter, decent jump serve, can hit back row with ease
- not a particularly good blocker, but also not so bad that teams will
on purpose set their right side when I'm front row.

I'd probably fit in best on a team playing BB.

You might know or recognize me from outdoor. I'm this guy:

PS. I love reverse co-ed hard core. Would love to play reverse at

Kiraly likely to announce retirement

Beach volleyball legend is expected to give it up after this season.

The Orange County Register
Karch Kiraly, one of the greatest beach volleyball players in the sport's history, is expected to announce his retirement at an informal news conference in Huntington Beach on March 13. But he hasn't left the sand just yet.
The three-time Olympic gold medalist and longtime San Clemente resident is expected to play in several events during the AVP season, including the Huntington Beach Open scheduled for May, before leaving the professional ranks in September. During the news conference, he also is expected to talk about his involvement in a new grassroots beach volleyball event in Southern California.
Still a marvel of fitness and competitive fire at 46, Kiraly (pronounced keer-EYE) is a towering figure in the game. He has won more tournaments (148), more money ($3 million plus) and more professional accolades than any other player on the sand over a 29-year career.
Kiraly's first pro year on the beach was 1978. The length of his career has stretched out so long that Kiraly was already a top player when his most recent partner, Larry Witt, was in diapers.
As an indoor player, Kiraly starred as well. He was a four-time All-American at UCLA, where he led the team to three national championships. Two of the seasons, 1979 and 1982, the Bruins were undefeated. In 1992, his jersey was retired, and he was inducted into the school's hall of fame.
He won his first two Olympic gold medals with the U.S. indoor team, before returning to the beach for good, where he won the gold with then-partner Kent Steffes in the sport's Olympic debut in Atlanta in 1996. Kiraly was also the AVP's most valuable player six times.

one of us can't make it (preferably someone who lives

  Thank you so much.

Happy Monday!

I just wanted to send out a follow up to my note that went out late Friday evening.  first of all, a big "thank you!!!" to everyone who got the note and has already donated.  When I went for my shaving, we were over halfway to my goal of $1,000 less than a day after I sent out my note.  That's awesome!!!

A few of you wrote after the fact but the good news is that you can still donate to the cause!  They said people can donate online up until their fiscal year ends in June.  Rest assured, I did get my head shaved on Saturday and pics will be forthcoming.  I kinda look like a cartoon character since it's pretty much peach fuzz up there now.  I'm thinking that if we double my original goal and get to $2,000 that I'll go ahead and go for the Mr Clean look. I don't mind looking silly for a few weeks especially for such a worthwhile cause.  Look at it this way, my head could be in your hands.  Heyooooooooo!

To read more about the St. Baldrick's Foundation (all the money is going to benefit research to help cure childhood cancer) and to donate towards the goal, visit http://www.stbaldricks.org and search for me by name.  Be sure to select the event from March 3rd - they're supposed to be removing my profile for March 10th but the money already donated on that date will be transferred.  If you have any questions, drop me a line.

Thanks again for all your support for the kids!!!

Greetings!

I know this is really last minute but I'd planned to do this next week and just realized I have a conflict so it's gotta be tomorrow - I'll be getting my head shaved for charity through an organization called St. Baldrick's Foundation. I saw the flyer for this really cool charity that helps do research for childhood cancer and all I have to do is have hair.  My donation goal is $1,000 and I'm asking everyone to just give whatever you can.  All donations are greatly appreciated.  When you see how ugly my bare head is, you'll realize what a sacrifice this is...

To read more about St. Baldrick's and to donate online (again, sorry for such late notice but I appreciate anything you can do to help me reach the $1,000 goal) anytime between now and tomorrow evening, so go to http://www.stbaldricks.org and just search by name (Vaughn Hastings) and for venue, be sure you choose the one at the Hibernian, tomorrow, March 3rd.

Thanks for any support, moral or financial

Cheers!

Vaughn

ps. sorry if you've gotten this more than once but I'm trying to get the word out as widely and quickly as possible
