RE: [kqvolleyball] Possible durham coed league

I traded emails with the guy organizing the Durham league as the information provided in their flyer was so terse. Bottom line seems to be that they are waiting to see what kind of participation they get and will make adjustments/decisions accordingly. I would expect as suggested elsewhere that they will be VERY open to input. The thing that seemed most odd to me was the requirement to sign up in person and only during certain evening hours. He said they are working on better means of organization and communication, but given how bad the City of Durhams web pages are I wouldn’t expect it soon. But it would be nice to see a decent league going on the west side of RTP. Anyway – here’s what I got from him in terms of additional information:

I can answer most of your concerns, but until we know exactly how many teams register, we will not have schedules and times set.  The number of teams dictate the exact day(s) of the week, number of games per week, number of games per evening and the number of games played by each team each night.

  • Play will begin on March 13th and I have actually reserved each Monday and Wednesday running through June 7th(no play on Monday, May 29th, due to Memorial Day.)  Whether teams play both nights, double headers, etc. will be determined by the number of teams in the league.  There will be a tournament at the end of the regular season.
  • The games will not be scheduled to begin before 6:30 p.m. and no game will be scheduled to begin after 9:00 p.m.
  • We do not have individual registration for adults, however, because this is a new league I am developing a list of “free agents” for other team captains or if someone wants to be a team captain, I will have some players for them.
  • This league is 6 player teams, of which 2 must be women (on the floor).  The teams must have a minimum of 7 on the roster.
  • We put out the registration information in advance to allow teams time to develop and with enough time to coordinate someone, anyone from that team to attend one of the two dates for registration.  We plan these in the evenings to allow those who work to have time to attend after they get off work.  We are working on alternative registration avenues, but as of now, personal appearance, by a team member, at our office is the only method.  We also accept registration during the day at our office from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the week prior, of and after the registration evening dates.
  • The level of play for this league is “Open/Recreational” and is self-officiated.  However, if the interest is there, we will develop leagues for different levels of play in the future.

Hi All,

I heard from a friend in Durham that the Durham Parks and Rec may be
trying to put together a co-ed 6's league for the spring (starting end
of feb).  He didn't know much details because it seems that the folks in
charge of getting the league going are a little unorganized. :-)    He
did say the sign up time was probably going to be at the end of Jan.

Anyway, if you are interested in playing you might want to contact
Durham Parks and Rec.  My friend seem to think that they might be
willing to tailor the league somewhat to what the interested players wanted.

Dave

Hi Folks, Here is a previous message from the list. I'm assuming it's the same league. I'm putting together a team partly because the price is so low! John ...
