Hi,
I'm in similar situation as Darren. Since my second child my cycling
activities are very limited. The only difference is that I can not
plan comeback at 40 because I'm 43 already. I plan comeback rather at
50 :-)

OK - I have a ride report for the recent Tour de Frog (the Sierra
Century), which began and ended in the little town of Murphys, which is
in the heart of California's historic Gold Rush country.
Although I only rode the half century, it included 5400 feet of
climbing. There were consistent 15% grades, and some of those grades
went on for ridiculously implausible distances.
The full century included 12,000 feet of gain.

We're still here! I guess that the proliferation of web-based bike chat
sites has silenced KOM.
Thanks for the report! That was my "home" century a few years ago. What
a great place for riding that is! The quaint Gold Country towns, quiet
roads, clean air. The terrain is so varied, you can ride hard, pine
forested mountains, or rolling vineyards.
You had great weather (as usual). We still aren't getting summer in the
UK. It's 15 celcius, grey, windy and rainy. :(

I would like inform the KOM group that I have John's book and he has
done a fabulous job in capturing great climbs in the US. I highly
recommend this book for anyone who is planning to visit the US and/or
travel around the States to find great climbs. Even if you're not
planning to travel the US to find great climbs, the book is still a
great addition to your cycling library. It has a section on climbing
tips and captures many of the most incredible climbing performances
over the past many many years of the Tours and other races. The
effort that went in to collecting the data for this book is most
awesome. John has done a fine job with this book, the first of its
kind in the US.

on how enjoyable stage 16 was yesterday. There was action for almost
the entire ride and it illustrates just how much more dramatic the

Hi Francois,
I see we are both riding l'Etape, maybe I'll see you at the finish.
On Sunday I will drive to AdH and take the bus back to Gap. Is there
any problem in finding free and legal all day parking space in AdH? I
would rather leave the car in Bourg d'Oisans, but the bus starts from
AdH.
Also I read that they won't let us descend after the race until 6pm. Is
it feasible to drive a car over Col de la Sarenne?
It should be amusing to watch the soccer final in France. If Italy wins
we might even get some sleep before the ride.
Regards
Brian

Mike, your remarks are quite flattering, for an amateur observer of performance
to be compared to a university graduate (PhD yet) physiologist, etc. puts quite
a strain on my modesty.
In French we say jokingly "Les grands esprits se rencontrent". I don't know if
we are "grands esprits", but I have often found in Ric's writing material that
seemed well thought out and reasonable. I do my own thinking from a physicist
perspective (applied to observations I have made on myself), but with poor
knowledge of physiology, then I pick in the relevant litterature the ideas that
seem reasonable from that perspective.
I don't have time to continue, my granddaughter seems bored.

Ric has a TdF diary there and he analyses each stage. Just noticed the

Hi Francois, Richard
Female cyclists seem slower descending. A month ago a rider was telling us
how when climbing the Ventoux he met a woman climbing at fast speed and
exhausted himself trying to follow her wheel. I can't remember if he was
dropped - I think he almost certainly was - but he'd had a conversation with her
and they met at the top. The woman was Sarah Ullmer who broke the world record
for 3000m pursuit at 2004 Olympics and she told him she was incredibly slow
descending so didn't ride road-races. They set off together and he waited for
her at the bottom. She was 9 minutes behind him. He was an old TT rider so
would be quite slow descending I would expect.

Well Richard,
it turns out that I had this year the same fate as you last year . I rode a
while with Carol Rasmussen on the first pass, telling her that the 1st woman (at
that point) was just a few seconds ahead and encouraging her. Then she dropped
out of sight as she did not manage to hold on to our wheels going downhill.
Then I did not see her again until less than 2 km from the finish, when it was
her turn to encourage me - before flying away - as she probably saw how much I
was suffering on that last climb.
I also like very much that event, hard to beat in terms of panoramic views.
Cheers
François

I prefered this event to the Marmotte -- a bit less of a slog, a bit
more like a race, since people rode in groups more often in the places
between the various climbs.
When I rode it I dropped Carol Rasmussen, the winner of one of the
women's categories that year, on the climb up to Villard-Reculas,
which is about halfway, but she reeled me in, caught and passed me in
the final 500 metres before Vaujany.
