As this group is quite inactive these days I could not help but comment
on how enjoyable stage 16 was yesterday. There was action for almost
the entire ride and it illustrates just how much more dramatic the
mountain stages are in the major tours. For U.S viewers on Versus I
also wanted to take the opportunity to rebut Bob Roll's statement that
there are not steep climbs here in the U.S. outside of Mt. Washington
and Brasstown Bald. Because U.S tours tend to avoid hard climbs for the
most part and many are somewhat isolated they are not well known. The
book, The Complete Guide to Climbing (By Bike) is now available and
portrays the multiple comparable U.S. climbs to the most difficult used
in the Tour. It is available from Extreme Press (or by sending me an
