A RLCM COACHING QUOTE

RLCM - Hey Coach! did you keep a diary?
By Gary Roberts
http://www.rlcm.com.au/carrara.htm
The season is over the premiership has been won the presentation
night was a great success.
Junior coaches could look back and think one of two things 'I did a
good job with the kids and I will improve them next year', or
maybe 'I could have done better'.
But, did they keep a diary of the year, did they evaluate and test
the players and keep a report card on every player they had in their
charge for the past season.
Did he record the skill, fitness, strengths and weakness at the start
of the season and where the players finished, in regards to those
attributes under his coaching?
And also just as importantly did he evaluate his own performance as a
coach.
Peter Corcoran, Education Director, ARL Foundation said in RLCM Book
14, it is necessary to realise that there are three aspects of
coaching to consider with self-evaluation - i.e. managing, teaching
and communicating.
(1) Corcoran says managing is the backbone of coaching: "Just as the
backbone keeps you erect, management is the support structure that
you need to do the job well." In this area, coaches need to ask
themselves, 'was management involved and if so, how did I manage the
situation'?
(2) Teaching can be seen as the heart of coaching: "If you teach
players the skills they need, based on the assumption that they are
basic essentials of good performance the learning of all these things
will make them better." In this case, ask, "how did I perform when
teaching the players. Did they understand?"
(3) Communication can be seen as the soul of coaching. Corcoran views
communication as, "the indefinable, invisible thing that allows you
to bring it all together."
Such questions touch on all the pivotal points of a particular action
and therefore lay the foundations for strong performance assessment
and rectification.
Coaches should thus note the underlying importance of regularly
reflecting on their performances.
They should also document in a diary or a report card format where
their players are at now and how far they progressed during the past
season.
Malcolm McMillan, QRL Southern Division Coaching Panel
explains, "Although it is not really necessary to test the 'Mod'
player, it is essential for the 'International' junior player it will
assist in the learning and teaching process. As there is so much for
the players to learn, it is something that coaches should do. There
are all types of tests and evaluations that can be carried out.
"Keep the tests simple, create a competitive game to watch a skill
that the players have, stand back and have another coach run the
skills session while you are evaluating and correcting of the players.
"Record their ability with the basics; tackling, passing, catching,
kicking, play the ball, agility and speed.
Children these days are not as naturally fit as they were in days
gone by, so some type of fitness testing could be applied also during
the year. "They will react to the tests, the same as senior players
do, they will want to know their individual results." McMillan said.
This is an opportunity for the coach to develope communication with his
players by discussing the tests results.
The current coach's report of all the players for the season can be
previewed at the start of the next season. If a new coach takes over
a team the diary/report card will be an invaluable source of
information for the incoming coach, ensuring a pattern of continuity
for the particular team.
Records of the player's strengths and weakness, the improvement that
they made during the past year is all vital information that assists
in the development of young players.
The timing of the testing is up to the individual coach or club, but
it would be suggested early season would be appropriate time to begin
with a maximum of another three times during year.

STEVE FOLKES COACHTALK INTERVIEW
WRITTEN BY ASHLEY BRADNAM
Printed 2001
http://www.rlcm.com.au/editions.htm
As a member of the revered, uncompromising Bulldogs pack of the
80’s Folkes developed a reputation as one of the game’s most
disciplined players. Tough and hard. Aggressive, but not dirty. Since
assuming the Canterbury coaching ranks he has devoted his time to
ensuring the current pack of Bulldogs are similarly valued. Folkes
considers discipline a priceless commodity.
“I believe discipline comes in many forms and hopefully as coach
I am instilling in my players the need to be self-disciplined. I
think a lot about this before I decide if the player should come to
our club in the first place. When we are looking at a young guy we go
into his upbringing fairly extensively because we figure we can learn
a fair bit about how he is situated in terms of things like
discipline from the way he was brought up. There is no doubt in my
mind that a team’s fortune can change once they (the players) are
individually prepared to alter their attitude.
Folkes is something of a football rarity in these sometimes-selfish
days of professionalism. He’s one hundred percent Bulldog, always
has been. Folkes has just chalked up season number 25 with the
Canterbury club as either player or as a member of the coaching staff
and appreciates more than anyone the culture of success the club has
constructed.
“I have only been away from the club for one year since I joined
and that was when I had a season in England. We have been fairly
successful since the time I came into grade and I was fortunate
enough to be playing with a lot of great players who demanded and
fully expected to win.
"Coming from that background I have found it easier to attempt to
instil that desire in my players”.
Desire, attitude and discipline are words employed repeatedly from
the Folkes coaching command. He had these assets as a player, and now
he’s looking to find it in his chargers as the educator. Teaching
such skills falls into the relatively unknown subjec matter called
man management. The ability to bring together an eclectic group of
athletes and transform them into a well-drilled, highly motivated
team unit is never easy. But, as Folkes says, it’s part of the
job.
“I think it’s more a matter of them blending personality wise
with the other players in the team. I think it’s important you
don’t have too many egos in the team and I think we really
haven’t had too many problems along those lines while I’ve
been
coaching here and even further back probably.
"Man management is probably the single greatest asset a coach can
have. It is, to me, learning how to get the best out of an
individual. They are all so different and so unique.
"One player needs a bit of a cuddle and a pat on the back and some
encouragement that way, while another bloke needs a swift boot right
up the behind. It is finding out the balance and trying to work out
every individual but there are some I haven’t worked out of
course. Trying to work out every individual and what excites and
motivates them is one of the real challenges of my job I think”.
We often hear rugby league players in post-match interviews bemoaning
the fact ‘they didn’t turn up to play’, or they ‘left
their boots at home’....................MORE

North London Skolars RLFC
Require good standard players preferably with British passports
The North London Skolars have just been accepted into the RFL's
second division called the NFP. We are therefore London's second pro
side with the London Broncos.
To prepare for the season we are looking for players to start pre-
season at the beginning of December 2002. All contracts will be part
time and to be honest will not make you rich, but will reward
commitment and success!
Background
The Skolars were founded in 1995 and have proved to be one of the big
RL development success stories. The club is a unique concept in RL as
it was the games first 'Old Boys' network RL club similar to
Harlequins in RU.
The club has won most of the honours available in the southern
amateur game and competed against all the odds in the National
Conference League for 4 seasons as well as playing in the Summer RLC
competition. The club has therefore proved it can run 2 senior teams
for over 45 weeks of the year.
The Skolars have also been at the forefront of youth development and
employ a full time development officer independent of the RFL and any
external other body.
Next steps
We are looking for good standard players preferably with British
passports to apply.

Rabbitohs ready to roll
[Daily Telegraph]South Sydney will become the first NRL team back into full
training when players assemble next Monday for a fitness test. The
Rabbitohs' training session is just 15 days after the NRL grand final was
played.
"We'll have a fitness test, weights session and do some wrestling," said
Souths coach Craig Coleman. "By then the players will have had two months
off. We finished in the last week of August because we had the last round
bye.
"We need to get back into training but the new players who played in the
finals will be given another two weeks off. Eight weeks is still a good
holiday."
The Wests Tigers will start training a week later than Souths, the
Parramatta Eels a few days later.

Webcke said enough is enough
[SMH]-Amid calls for more Test matches, Australian prop Shane Webcke warned
after the win against the Kiwis: "We can't play any more football than we
already play. That's a fact.
"You're not playing tennis or something, where you're not going to wear
out. It's a physical, tough game, particularly these international games.
"Perhaps there's a better format; perhaps they need to drop a few club
games, I don't know. But you've got players playing 35 games a year. That's
a lot of footy."

Leigh could retain PaulTerzis
[Ananova]-Leigh chairman Mike Nolan pledged to turn the Centurions into a
promotion-winning team despite a third successive near-miss.
The club missed out on a place in Super League when they lost 38-16 to
Huddersfield in the Northern Ford Premiership Grand Final. It followed last
season's exit at the semi-final stage after dominating the regular season.
But Nolan has not ruled out keeping Australian coach Paul Terzis and former
Great Britain scrum-half Bobbie Goulding.
"We will be talking to everybody in the next week or so," he said. "There
has got to be some financial reality in the NFP and we'll be putting a
budget together.
"We will get the best available for that budget and keeping Paul is
certainly not ruled out, I've a lot of time for him as a coach. But I also
have a business to run ..more

Maroons want Anderson's head
[Daily Telegraph]- Australian captain Gorden Tallis' impassioned plea for
Chris Anderson to be retained as Test coach has fallen on deaf ears in his
home state.
The Queensland Rugby League confirmed yesterday they would oppose any
attempt by Anderson to keep the job for a fifth year -- even though his
Kangaroos teams have won 11 of 13 Tests and he has the support of senior
players ..more

Grand Final fever intensifies

Leeds legend Mick Shoebottom dies
[Teamtalk]-Leeds legend Mick Shoebottom has passed away at the age of 57.
The scrum-half was a member of the last Great Britain team to win the Ashes
in 1970 and picked up 12 Test caps during a short but successful career
which also featured appearances for Yorkshire and England.
Shoebottom was a hugely popular figure at Headingley, starring in the
scrum-half, stand-off and full-back positions. He made a total of 288
appearances for Leeds, scoring 117 tries.
Tragically, his blossoming career was brought to a premature end at the age
of 26 when he took a blow to the head after scoring a try for Leeds in a
Championship semi-final against Salford.
=====================================================================
Tallis to play for another two years
[Yahoo]- Australian captain Gorden Tallis says he'll keep playing for the
Kangaroos as long as he is considered good enough by the National Rugby
League selectors.
Tallis, whose representative career has come under the spotlight following
speculation he was considering quitting the Test side, said he had no plans
to turn his back on a green and gold jersey in the immediate future.
The Brisbane second rower said he had two years remaining on his contract
with the Broncos and would continue to make himself available to play for
Australia.
"I could never give up an Australian jersey," Tallis said ..more

Giants ready for big time
[BBC] ........."I believe we are far better prepared in every way than we
were five years ago," Huddersfield chairman Ken Davy said.
"Our back office and infrastructure is, I believe, second to none in the
game and everything is in place to enable us to make a good impression in
Super League.
"I'm not suggesting we are going to be all-conquering in our first season
but our objective is to build on solid foundations."..more

'Fresh' Saints vie for bullish revenge in final
[By Dave Hadfield, The Independent]-If there is one running battle
that has characterised rugby league in this country since the
upheavals of the mid-90s, it has been Bradford versus St Helens –
and the latest episode will be played out in the Tetleys Super League
Grand Final at Old Trafford next Saturday.
That is as it should be. The two teams, such a contrast in so many
ways, have been the strongest in the competition this year. Leeds and
Hull have flattered to deceive and Wigan, who beat Saints to win the
Challenge Cup in April, were always on borrowed time in the play-
offs. The cream has risen to the top ..more

Australian Aboriginals arrive in UK on Thursday
[BARLA]-The Australian Aboriginals fly into England on Thursday 17th
October for what promises to be a mouth-watering tour in which all
the thrills and spills of the inaugural trip, back in 1996, are
likely to be repeated. The tour encompasses the three BARLA Counties,
the Combined Services and two test matches against the BARLA Great
Britain Lions
Like the 1996 party, the 2002 tourists will arrive in Great Britain
as virtual unknowns. But the touring party will be well aware that
their predecessors included several players for whom that trip

Career blow a blessing for Nathan Brown
[By Danny Weidler, The Sun-Herald]-Nathan Brown calls them "my
darkest days", but his wife Tanya realises they have spawned a whole
different career for the new St George Illawarra coach.
"We were talking about my appointment the other night and she said
this may not have happened if it wasn't for the injury," Brown said.
And that was the first time Brown genuinely saw the positive side of
the neck injury that ended his career at the start of the 2001 season.

Politicians pan Piggins after quitting Souths board
[The Sun-Herald]-South Sydney chairman George Piggins has worn
another attack from disgruntled directors, as the last of the Group
14 faction - a trio of politicians - quit the board on Friday
afternoon.
Labor MPs Anthony Albanese and Deirdre Grusovin and Randwick mayor
Dominic Sullivan resigned at a meeting with Piggins. The trio had
threatened to quit for some time and Piggins has two replacements
lined up - Redfern Aboriginal leader Sol Bellear and businessman
Peter Lahood.
The departures follow the recent exodus of CEO Paul Dunn and members
of the high-profile Group 14 established to help the club before its
expulsion from the league in 1999, including Andrew Denton and Mike
Whitney, who delivered Kerry Stokes as a major sponsor ..more

Huddersfield 38 defeated Leigh 16
[Ananova]-Huddersfield will be promoted to Super League after winning
the NFP grand final 38-16 against Leigh.
Hefin O'Hare and Marcus St Hilaire both scored two tries for the
Giants, who were 14-10 up at half-time.
They clinched victory with three tries early in the second half.
Leigh twice held the lead in a full-blooded first half and they would
have been in front by half-time had Neil Turley been in goalkicking
form.
The Centurions, aiming to become only the second team to beat the
Giants this year, scored the first try after eight minutes when Simon
Baldwin superbly offloaded from a two-man tackle to get the unmarked
Dale Cardoza over ..more

Kris Radlinski ruled of Test series
[By Ian Laybourn, PA Sport]- Great Britain's hopes of reclaiming the
number two spot in the world suffered a blow on Saturday when full-
back Kris Radlinski was ruled out of the Test series against New
Zealand.
The Wigan ace, who has maintained his standing as the leading full-
back in Super League this year, has been dogged by injury since the
ill-fated July 12 Test in Sydney and is expected to undergo wrist
surgery next week.
"His body is smashed," said Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay. "We've
been waiting for the last game so that he can have the operation.
"He will need three months rest afterwards so he's having the
operation immediately to enable him to be ready for next year."..more

David Waite prepares for Kiwi clash
[Sporting Life]-Great Britain coach David Waite witnessed the size of
the task facing his side in next month's Test series after New
Zealand went down valiantly to world champions Australia on Saturday.
The Kiwis, who fly into London on Monday for an eight-match tour of
Britain and France, gave the Kangaroos a massive fright before going
down 32-24 in the one-off Test in front of a 25,015 crowd in
Wellington ..more

Harvey Howard and Gary Connolly leave Wigan
[Ananova]-Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay has confirmed that prop
Harvey Howard and centre Gary Connolly have played their last matches
for Wigan.
Howard who joined the Warriors from Brisbane Broncos two years ago,
is thought likely to retire to Australia.
But Connolly will take a fortnight's holiday before playing out the
rest of his career with Wigan's rugby union sister club Orrell.
With Australian second rower David Furner, 32, joining Leeds for next
season, the average age of the Wigan team is set to plummet in 2003,
much to the delight of Lindsay, who has been forced to slash the
club's budget to get under the salary cap ..more

Familiar script Kiwis led until the 61-minute mark
[NZ Herald, Peter Jessup]-Coach Gary Freeman was pleased with the
improvement since his first game against Australia last July.
"It was an exceptional game of footy," Freeman said.
"We showed plenty of courage. I'm proud of the boys. I thought all of
the new Kiwis went well. Everyone contributed." ..more

Australia 32 defeated New Zealand 24
[AAP]-Australia put the boot into New Zealand in Wellington tonight
in their Test at WestpacTrust Stadium.
Only six days after the Sydney Roosters put paid to the Warriors'
dream of bringing the NRL trophy across the Tasman, the Kangaroos
ended any Kiwi hopes of international bragging rights before 25,015
fans in windy Wellington.
New Zealand were anything but a gracious host in the first half,
taking a 24-16 lead into halftime after an opening blitz and a late
try from centre Clinton Toopi.
But the Kangaroos hit back in the second half to score their fourth
straight win over the Kiwis and reassert their dominance on the
international stage.
It took the Kangaroos 63 minutes to hit the front in an entertaining
match, but once they did, they quickly piled on another two tries
before the final whistle ..more.
