NRL Club News from SMH - Tuesday

By Steve Mascord

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA

Dragons vice-captain Lance Thompson, who was not expected to play
again this season after fracturing his foot in round 15, will make a
comeback against Penrith on Sunday. Centre Mark Gasnier (quadriceps)
is out for at least two weeks, while hooker Mark Riddell can escape
suspension if he enters an early guilty plea to a striking charge.

BRISBANE

New Zealand sevens rugby union representative Jason Tiatia has signed
with the Broncos for the rest of the season. Tiatia, a 24-year-old
winger or fullback, is a former Junior Kiwi who signed for Penrith as
an 18-year-old but stayed in rugby. "They don't know what I play like
and want to have a good look at me with this weekend in mind," he
told NZPA.

BULLDOGS

Dogs hooker Corey Hughes faces a two- or three-week suspension after
he was charged yesterday with dropping his knees in a tackle.

CANBERRA

Raiders prop Luke Davico is expected to miss at least two weeks with
knee and ankle damage to the right leg. Skipper Simon Woolford was
charged with a careless high tackle but he will escape suspension,
whether or not he challenges the allegation.

CRONULLA

Injured props Chris Beattie (back) and Jason Stevens (knee) are
unlikely to be named tonight for Saturday's encounter with Brisbane,
but each is a chance of being a late inclusion.

MANLY

Sea Eagles officials were last night unsure whether Brendon Reeves
(back), Chad Randall (ankle), Ben Walker and Ben MacDougall (both
hamstring) would be available for selection tonight when coach Peter
Sharp names his side to take on Newcastle this Sunday.

MELBOURNE

The Storm and the Warriors will contest the Mick Moore Trophy on
Saturday night, named after the Melbourne football manager who died
three years ago when he hit his head diving into Auckland Harbour
after a match between the clubs. "I don't need to go to Auckland to
think of him," said five-eighth Matt Geyer. "I've got a picture of
him above my computer at home and I miss him. It's up to each
individual how they address it."

NEWCASTLE

The beleaguered Knights are expected to add four internationals
tonight when coach Michael Hagan names his side to play Manly on
Sunday: Andrew Johns, Ben Kennedy, Danny Buderus and Adam MacDougall.

PARRAMATTA

The Eels yesterday confirmed the signings of Wests Tigers' Corey
Pearson, Sydney's Eric Grothe, St George Illawarra's Craig Stapleton
and South Sydney's Wise Kativerata.

PENRITH

Panthers officials were happy with forward Colin Ward's comeback from
a broken arm on Sunday but Shane Rodney (groin) is in serious doubt
for Sunday's trip to WIN Stadium.

SOUTH SYDNEY

NSW under-17s centre Troy Boston has signed with the Rabbitohs for
the next three years. "I'd like to play like Matthew Gidley," Boston
said yesterday.

SYDNEY ROOSTERS

On Friday night, Canberra will line up against a different Todd
Payten from the one who left the club last year. Roosters football
manager Brian Canavan said Payten was 122 kilograms when he arrived
at the premiers' camp this year but now weighed just 112kg.

WARRIORS

Halfback Stacey Jones will be out for two weeks with a groin injury
suffered in last Friday night's Test defeat.

WESTS TIGERS

The Tigers are trying to hold on to Wigan lock Nick Graham, who was
to join them next year but has reportedly received an approach from
Brisbane. A finger injury is unlikely to keep skipper Darren Senter
out of Saturday night's encounter with Parramatta.

Angry Anderson takes a step back

By Steve Mascord and Jacquelin Magnay

Besieged coach Chris Anderson last night extended an olive branch to
Cronulla directors, admitting he had been too "blunt" in trying to
enact change at the club.

It is understood some Sharks directors met informally yesterday
evening to discuss Anderson's remarkable ultimatum issued after
Sunday's loss to Canberra: support me or sack me.

The directors have a scheduled meeting tonight, at which Anderson's
position is certain to be discussed. NSW utility Phil Bailey is the
only Sharks player to have a "get-out" clause in his contract should
the national coach be shown the door.

But captain Brett Kimmorley said: "A lot of players came here to play
under Chris. If Chris isn't here, then I don't know what the
situation [with] player strength would be. We don't really want to
play under another coach."

Anderson last night stepped back from his confrontational stance,
insisting his top priority was to find a way to serve the remaining
year of his contract.

He said he apologised if he had offended directors and former coach
John Lang with his oft-stated determination to introduce a winning
culture at the Sharks.

"They got offended by the fact I came in and said we needed to change
the culture," said Anderson, who admitted on Sunday the controversy
was affecting his health.

"They took that personally and it was never meant that way.

"The people in the place can change the culture, it's just having an
acceptance to change.

"And maybe my bull-at-a-gate style isn't compatible with people being
given time to buy into what I'm about.

"And maybe I was a little bit blunt, I suppose, with the way I wanted
to do it. I guess when you get a bit older in life and staid in your
ways, you do get a little bit like that.

"So I'll put my hand up and say, 'Maybe I didn't explain enough to
them' - I didn't understand that they didn't understand."

Anderson's peace offering improves his chances of surviving tonight's
meeting - which he is not expected to attend - and a football club
summit on August 5 with his job intact.

He denied he had brought the issue to a head in order to push for a
payout of some $450,000 and a couple of comfortable years off.

Kangaroo tours may end

By Steve Ricketts

THE six-match end-of-season Kangaroo tour of Britain and France could
be the last.

Instead, a Tri-series involving Australia, Britain and New Zealand
will be played in Britain at the end of the next three NRL seasons
with a World Cup likely to be held in Australia in 2007.

It is a format that drew a mixed reaction yesterday from Australia's
most capped player Mal Meninga, who made a record four Kangaroo tours
of Britain and France between 1982 and 1994, the last two as skipper.

Meninga said yesterday the British League might struggle to keep its
elite players in the face of rugby union bids if there were no tours
to the southern hemisphere.

"I like the Tri-series idea, but they should spread it around,"
Meninga said.

"It wouldn't cost any more to hold it here and I'm sure the Poms
would love the odd trip to Australia.

"At least there appears to be some sort of continuity now to the
international program, although it is sad to see 'Roo tours
scrapped."

Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett advocated the Tri-series last
year and he also envisaged the tournament would be shared around.

Former British Test forward Denis Betts said yesterday it was
staggering the idea of a full-scale tour of Australia should be
discarded when nearly 10,000 supporters followed the last side "down
under" in 1992.

"We won the second Test in Melbourne and the decider at Lang Park
went down to the wire," Betts said.

"You have a chance to improve on tour but it is tough to play one-off
matches against Australia."

ARL chief executive Geoff Carr said it was the British League that
had pushed to host the Tri-series from 2004-06 to help with its bid
to renegotiate television rights to the game.

"The Tri-series will add spice to their claims for a better deal,"
Carr said.

"Teams from the northern hemisphere will be here for the World Sevens
in February and we hope to stage a big event, like a World Cup, to
coincide with the centenary of the game in Australia and New Zealand
in 2007."

Carr confirmed this year's Kangaroos would play a match at Perpignan
in France before opening the British leg of the trip with a match
against England A in London on October 28.

The International Federation meeting on the Gold Coast broke up
yesterday with Australia and New Zealand to hold further talks over
when to hold two Tests next year.

Why Anderson lost support

By James Hooper

A CRONULLA director last night revealed the extraordinary moment he
and fellow board members fell out with Sharks coach Chris Anderson.

It was before a mid-season match last year when board members
routinely boarded the team bus travelling to an away match.

Displaying the qualities which won him premiership success at two NRL
clubs, Anderson walked on the bus and told each board member to get
off.

From now on, Anderson said, the team bus would be for players only.

The fact it was pouring rain at the time did little to enhance
Anderson's demand as the directors were forced to get taxis.

The director did not wish to be named but admitted it was the moment
when Anderson started to lose much of his support from the board.

Anderson will meet today with his manager George Mimis, Sharks
chairman Barry Pierce and club general manager Steve Rogers to
discuss the issue ahead of a board meeting tonight.

Anderson has demanded the board either support him or sack him as the
situation at the Cronulla club continues to deteriorate.

"What is at stake here is the future of Cronulla," Anderson said.

TONY SMITH TURNS DOWN NEW DEAL

Huddersfield Giants coach Tony Smith has turned down the club's offer
of a contract extension for the Tetley's Super League 2004 and 2005
seasons.

Giants chief executive Ralph Rimmer said: "Tony Smith has held talks
with the club over the last few weeks during which he had sought a
significant rise in the playing budget for season 2004.

"He aspires to a much larger playing budget than our salary cap will
provide for next season.

"He feels that given a resource of that size he could have a
significant impact at the very top of this competition and I
personally have very little doubt that a coach of his ability would
win silverware in that situation.

"The Huddersfield Giants continue to grow and develop at a good rate
but for next season we will not be in a position to provide Tony with
the level of resource that he seeks - even with our chairman's
substantial backing.

"Like all other Super League clubs we must comply with the salary cap
regulations and can only develop our playing budget at the rate at
which the business grows.

"I would stress that all our discussions have been very amicable and
I would give the highest possible praise to Tony Smith for the work
he has done at the club over the last three years or so.

Guns roar but it's all academic

By RAY ANDERSEN
THE North Queensland Young Guns' semi-final hopes may be over but
they are still intent on having an impact on this year's Queensland
Cup.

The Young Guns were too strong for bottom-placed Wests in Ayr on
Saturday night, beating the Panthers 42-6.

With both teams out of semi-finals contention the result meant little
but it has at least given the Young Guns some confidence heading into
the final four games of the season.

Next week the Young Guns travel south to play Tweed Heads who are in
fifth place on the ladder and fighting for a place in the finals.

Thomson has set his team the goal of a strong finish to a
disappointing season, starting with next weekend's match.

"We want to finish the season solidly," Thomson said yesterday.

"We've got Tweed Heads next week who are on the threshold of the five
and we can put a dent in their season if we get a win."

The Young Guns were in control of the match against Wests at
halftime, leading 18-0 despite some poor ball security, before
finishing off the visitors in the second period.

"In the second half I was very pleased with their effort," Thomson
said.

"We scored some good, smart tries and put in some good defence."

Thomson was reluctant to single out any players for special mention
although he did credit halves Aaron Payne and Michael Meigan, who
scored two tries, for being the architects of the win.

"It was a good team effort," Thomson said.

"We did not have a lot of standouts. Everyone pulled their weight
which was good.

"At the end of the day that's what we're looking for."

Centre Jason Barsley failed to finish the match after hurting his leg
in the pre-game warm-up.

The injury is believed to be a hamstring strain and will be checked
by medical staff today.

Sing eclipses own record as purple patch continues

By ADAM GARDINI

COWBOYS winger Matt Sing capped a brilliant fortnight across every
level of rugby league by breaking his own club record for most tries
in a season when he crossed for his 17th four-pointer of the year
yesterday.

The try marked his seventh in just 12 days following a hat-trick for
Queensland in State-of-Origin III, a double for Australia in Friday
night's Test and one for the Cowboys last weekend.

It also moved Sing alongside Penrith flyer Rhys Wesser at the top of
the National Rugby League's try-scoring list.

His coach Graham Murray was able to contribute some humour when asked
of Sing's try-scoring abilities before paying tribute to the 29-year-
old's stellar season.

"He's done well hasn't he? That's not counting touch footy or
anything," Murray said.

"He was terrific in the Origin series, he deserved his Australian
jumper and today, after backing up from Friday night, he kicked away
from a pretty good fullback in Luke Patten -- it was a pleasure to
watch.

"And if he's at the top of the try-scoring it's not a fluke, he
deserves every one of them."

However Sing, showing no effects of the Test match he had played less
than 48 hours beforehand, indicated leading the NRL's try-scoring
list at the end of the season would only be a bonus.

"I wasn't really thinking about it (the record) too much and was just
lucky to get a good ball and got a try," Sing said.

"I just want to play well for the club at the Cowboys and just see
how it goes from there and if I'm up there at the end it's a bonus."

SAINTS RESPOND TO WAKE-UP CALL

Wakefield 15-36 St Helens
Tetley's Super League

Tetley's Super League champions St Helens were given a real scare by
a Wakefield side struggling at the foot of the table before finally
stamping their authority on the game late on.

Wakefield's Michael Korkidas was sent off for throwing a punch in the
tackle and Saints had two players sinbinned - Stuart Jones and Tim
Jonkers - for interference at the play the ball in the second half.

That opened the game up and Wakefield pressed hard at St Helens, who
clung on before extending their advantage late in the match.

Wakefield had raced into a 14-0 lead midway through the first half
but St Helens had taken charge by the half-time break.

The home side started like an express train and had St Helens on the
back foot with tries from Ben Jeffries and Jamie Rooney, who
converted both and also kicked a penalty.

St Helens scored tries through John Stankevitch, Sean Long and Paul
Wellens - all converted by Long - while Wakefield could only muster a
Rooney drop goal in response as the visitors led 18-15 at the
interval.

Wakefield threw everything at St Helens but the visitors held their
24-15 advantage which they had established two minutes into the
second half with a try by Darren Albert, converted by Long.

And Long made certain of the win with an easy interception try, which
he also goaled, 10 minutes from time. Albert added his second try
seven minutes from the end, converted by Long who finished with 20
points to his credit.

BRADFORD CLOSE THE GAP

Castleford 20-40 Bradford

Tetley's Super League

Bradford Bulls closed the gap on West Yorkshire neighbours Leeds
Rhinos to two points with a game-in-hand at the top of the Tetley's
Super League, after their 40-20 win at Castleford.

Second-placed Bulls recovered from 16-6 down in the first half to
overpower Tigers in a pulsating clash at The Jungle.

Bulls hit back to lead 18-16 at half-time and never looked in danger
in the second half. They sealed victory with two tries in the last
nine minutes from Lee Gilmour and Tevita Vaikona.

Paul Mellor and Wayne Godwin were hauled down just short of the line
as Castleford made all the early running after capitalising on
several errors by Bradford.

Tigers missed a golden chance when Dale Fritz burst clear after
swooping on a loose ball but he was unable to find the supporting
Waine Pryce.

Bulls weathered the storm before taking the lead in their first
serious attack when Paul Deacon weaved through for a try he also
goalled.

Castleford quickly responded when winger Darren Rogers finished crisp
handling to go over.

Tigers soon struck again when Danny Orr put Michael Eagar in for a
touchdown that Mitch Healey converted.

Bulls were rocked again when Healey's kick set up a try for Waine
Pryce and Orr added a touchline conversion.

Bradford cut the gap to four points when Leon Pryce scored from James
Lowes' kick.

Bulls regained the lead shortly before the interval when Lee Radford
went in from close range and Deacon kicked his third goal.

Bradford stretched their advantage two minutes into the second half
when Scott Naylor burst over from Stuart Reardon's pass.

The game fell further away from Castleford when Deacon made the
opening for Daniel Gartner to power over.

Waine Pryce's second try put Tigers 30-20 behind but their fate was
sealed when Gilmour's 71st-minute try was followed by a late score
from Vaikona. Deacon added his sixth goal.

SLIPPERY EELS

By Scott Brooks

It's amazing what the return of your best player and a bit of
uniformity around the halves can do for a team. For most of this
season the Parramatta Eels and Brian Smith have been under the pump
for poor performances, after 13 rounds of the NRL they had only
managed three wins. People could not fathom how a club once so
dominant could be languishing so low on the ladder.

But just a month after Smith sheepishly proclaimed that his side
would provide 'nuisance value'to the top clubs in the run home to the
finals, the Eels are back in the semi-final frame themselves.

Jones out for 2-3 weeks - Warriors doctor

Stacey Jones is expected to be sidelined from the New Zealand
Warriors for 2-3 weeks after suffering a groin strain in Friday's
trans-Tasman league test.

Jones was examined today by Warriors team doctor Chris Hanna, who
expected at least a two-week break for the star playmaker.

That would mean he would miss this weekend's home game against
Melbourne and the away game against St George Illawarra the following
week.

The round 23 away clash with Newcastle could be a possible comeback
date, and a rematch with opposite number and playmaking wizard Andrew
Johns.

A Warriors spokesman said Jones would be checked again later in the
week to get a clearer idea of how long he would be sidelined.

Warriors coach Daniel Anderson said after Friday's 6-48 loss to the
Kangaroos in Sydney that the time off may benefit Jones, who had
hardly any off-season break due to the Kiwis tour to England and
France last year.

Tri-Nations Replaces League World Cup

Written by: League Correspondent

A new annual Tri-Nations series involving Australia, New Zealand and
Great Britain will replace the World Cup and the Lions tours until at
least 2006.

The Rugby League International Federation confirmed that the
competition will be hosted by Great Britain for the next three years.

The decision effectively puts the next World Cup, scheduled for 2005,
on ice, principally because of the financial problems and largely
uncompetitive nature of the 2000 tournament.

It is hoped that the Tri-Nations concept will capitalise on growing
interest in the forthcoming Australia tour of Britain, with ticket
sales for the second Test at Hull's Kingston Communications Stadium
on 15 November approaching 15,000.

"The reports on the tour preparations are very encouraging," said
chairman Colin Love.

"It was agreed that three different referees will be used in the
three Tests, with the individual appointments to be agreed between
the ARL and the RFL later in the year.

"There's no doubt the Tri-Nations events over the next three years
will build on the interest we are already seeing in the game in
England."

Wales 48 defeated Scotland 22

By Simon Davies

Wales, the reigning amateur four nations rugby league champions, made
up for last month's defeat in Ireland by scoring six second-half
tries to pull away from a spirited Scotland side who had matched them
up to the break.

Scotland took an early lead through a Barry Edgar penalty, and
extended their advantage to 8-0 on 8 minutes when James MacKay raced
over after picking up a spilled bomb. Wales replied with a Michael
Healy penalty and drew level on 17 minutes when Mark Bow set up
Cardiff teammate Mark Dando to go in from ten yards out.

Aberavon's Dean Scully latched on to a bullet pass from Healy for the
only other try of a well-contested first half. Scotland kept in touch
through further penalty goals from Glasgow Bulls full-back Edgar,
leaving Wales with a narrow 14-12 interval lead.

But the second half was a different story as the home side began to
dominate. Prop forward Wes Palmer, playing his first game since his
return from Australia with the Great Britain student tour, took the
ball in with a powerful run from 30 yards out to extend the Welsh
lead to six points, only to see Scotland strike back a minute later
when Calum Morrison scored in the corner from a fine Scotland move.

Two tries within three minutes, the first a great passing movement
finished off by winger Sean O'Brien and the second a moment of
opportunism from Scully after a kick ahead by Healy, pushed the Welsh
advantage to 14.

Scotland responded with a Matt Stevens try set up by scrum-half Al
Stewart of London Skolars to bring the score back to 30-22, but the
visitors were unable to cross the Welsh line again.

Swansea's Simon Bevan grabbed two tries in the last quarter and in
between Healy put Welsh captain John Byers in for another as the home
side went away with a convincing 26 points victory.

Hughes facing three-match ban

The Bulldogs could lose utility player Corey Hughes for up to three
matches after he was charged by the National Rugby League with
dropping his knees.

The grade two offence carries a two-match suspension for an early
guilty plea, but his blemished record means Hughes will be outed for
three games if he unsuccessfully contests the case at the judiciary
on Wednesday night.

St George Illawarra hooker Mark Riddell was charged with grade one
striking but can narrowly avoid a one-match ban if he enters an early
guilty plea.

Canberra hooker Simon Woolford will escape a suspension for a grade
one careless high tackle.

Rabbitohs snare exciting junior

SOUTH Sydney today secured the services of exciting junior Troy
Boston for the next three National Rugby League seasons.

Boston, 17, has signed with the Rabbitohs until the completion of the
2005 season, with the club also having the option of keeping him for
the 2006 campaign.

The highly rated South Eastern junior equally comfortable at centre,
wing, or fullback represented the NSW under-17 and captained the
Souths SG Ball side this year.

He recently helped the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges reach the final
of the national schoolboys' championship in Darwin.

Souths chief executive David Tapp welcomed the snaring of Boston, who
joins teammate Beau Champion in the elite Souths junior squad.

"Troy is one of what we believe are three really outstanding juniors
the others being Champion and Buddy Gordon whom we have targeted to
stay here on long-term arrangements," said Tapp.

"We signed Champion last week, and we are in the process of
completing a deal for Gordon.

"Troy is a really exciting backline prospect, and we think he'll
prove an excellent addition to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

"This is all part of our plan to work more closely with Souths
Juniors to identify and develop elite junior talent, which will soon
evolve into the Rabbitohs elite junior squad."

Boston, who rates the great Clive Churchill as the ultimate Souths
player, said he tried to model his game on Newcastle's NSW State of
Origin centre Matthew Gidley.

"He's a very hard runner and great passer, which are things I like to
apply to my game," he said.

"I'm very happy to be a Rabbitoh, Beau (Champion) and I are really
looking forward to being part of the team in the future."

Tapp said Souths would also grant 12 more juniors scholarships to the
club.
