A RLCM COACHING QUOTE
".. experience is one thing and natural ability is another.
"I guess I like the half back to be a natural half - the best
ones generally are I think, although there's plenty a player can
learn from experience- from playing games, making mistakes and
learning.
"Playing football is the only way you can get educated about playing
football..." Ricky Stuart from his article titled 'The Halfback'
which appears in RLCM Book 28 - Printed September 2002

RLCM COMMENT -
"It was about attitude", said 'Sticky'
By Gary Roberts 8/10/02
What is attitude?
The Sydney Roosters showed in the latter part of the NRL competition
that they were going to be one of the teams to beat. For the last 8 -
10 weeks they had been playing perhaps marginally above themselves
and it became a habit that began as the momentum that built a mental
strength and an attitude.
The culmination of their hard season came to an end when they were
crowned NRL Premiers for 2003 on Sunday night.
Ricky Stuart a first time coach at the elite level produced a team
that believed in themselves as players.
After a resounding victory over the Brisbane Broncos several weeks
back the team began to excel. The game at ANZ Stadium started a march
for Stuart's young team to gain the confidence, but more importantly
they gained an attitude that was needed to go all the way.
Is attitude a missing ingredient for some teams?
A cliché or cop out by defeated players and coaches nowadays is
'they did not turn up to play'
Did the NZ Warriors lack attitude on Sunday night?
The answer is no, they came to play, as they have all year.
The Warriors showed enormous attitude. Both teams did not have a
problem with attitude up to the 60 minute mark. The game was held in a
tight balance up to this point with the Roosters at times holding an upper
hand and then the game swinging towards the Warriors for their turn to gain
supremacy.
Brian Canavan Roosters Football Manager said "At halftime, we felt we
were physically on top, but they are such a good team with their ad-
lib play, they can attack you from anywhere, any tackle, anywhere on
the field.
"We were not playing as well as we hoped, but we thought our
composure [patience] would get us there, but it took to the 60
minutes mark, until we got away with it.
"The Warriors were dominant in the ruck area, they can get a roll-on,
they are big people, very powerful over short distances and that
hurts when you are on your back foot all of the time.
"Our ball control was not good either, so as a result of that, they
were able to match and tire us. Just before half time, we were really
hurting we were struggling.
An attitude of supremacy, developed within both teams as they strived
to gain the upper hand in the ruck area, neither team gave leeway to
the opposition, the majority of play the balls were in the 2 to 4
second time frame and the quick play the balls were reverting from
team to team as they attempted to gain their share of momentum.
Attitude in defence is about knowing your inside player has the
correct attitude to hold his position in the line even though the
ball has passed him. Attitude is about knowing the player outside you
is switched on and has the team attitude instilled. Knowing that the
one on one tackle must be made. It is about developing patience.
The belief in attitude is not something new to rugby league, master
coach Wayne Bennett has been spruiking about attitude for many years,
his players are instilled with his doctrine and repeat 'attitude was
the key' whether it is in the positive or the negative, attitude is
one of Bennett's key words.
How did Ricky Stuart bring his brand of attitude to the dance floor
and develop it into a defence system that can keep teams with the
ball confined to their own end for long periods of time and create
frustration, panic and occasionally a turnover of the ball to his
team.
Stuart said in RLCM Book 28 - " You have to have the basic support of
the players to begin with. These elements discipline, enthusiasm and
commitment - they have to be there to begin with or you'll never
achieve what you aim to [do], defence comes back to discipline and
commitment. The old cliché about defence being a reflection of
attitude is one hundred percent correct".
After the game Stuart said " I don't think we played real good
football tonight and that was because of the Warriors defence. They
dominated the first 60 minutes in the play the ball area. My biggest
beef at half time was to work harder with the football in the play
the ball area.
'We were always prepared to get them on the back end of the game, it
was a game of two halves but we were prepared to get them on the back
end.
"To win the game tonight, it not just about football, it was about
attitude and our players have good attitude". Stuart concluded

EXTRACT FROM RLCM BOOK 26 CHRIS ANDERSON'S ARTICLE ON TIME MANAGEMENT
WRITTEN BY ASHLEY BRADNAM
Printed May 2002
http://www.rlcm.com.au/editions.htm
Time Management
Chris Anderson - Sharks and Australian Coach
Country crooner Kenny Rogers knows the keys to
successful gambling. Inadvertently, he may also have
stumbled on the keys to successful time management
for rugby league coaching.
“You’ve gotta know when to hold ‘em, know when
to fold ‘em, know when to walk away, and know
when to run”.
Knowing what to do and when to do it frequently
divides the master from the mob – in any field.
Rugby League is no different. A good coach knows
the game; a great coach knows how and when to
teach it.
It’s one of the latest additions to the league
world’s ‘buzz words’ vocabulary. They call it ‘time
management’. It’s the art of understanding the how
and the when. And just like punting, every coach
has a different formula for success.
NRL coaching is a full time job, but that’s not to
say time is of ample abundance. In the last edition
(Book 25) of RLCM, we took a look at the weekly
routine of the Brisbane Broncos, from a player’s
perspective; covering rehab after the weekend, to
preparing for the coming match.
In this edition, we concentrate on the weekly roster
of the coach and his staff, and take a crack at unearthing
a productive formula for success.
First tip? Well, according to Cronulla and Australian
mentor Chris Anderson it’s imperative to know when
to give your players, and yourself, a break. Or as
Kenny might sing: “Know when to walk away”.
“This isn’t like a normal job, you never just walk
away from the office and leave it behind”, says
Anderson.
“ It’s pretty full on and I think it’s important to give
myself and the boys a day a week to get away, or try
to at least. You can’t be just all football. On my day
off though, I generally go and play golf with the
players and normally find myself working on them
while doing so. You don’t start at nine and finish at
four in this job, you’re always thinking about it, but
I enjoy that. Down time is important though, as is
preparation”.
Training preparation entails more than ensuring the
balls are pumped up and the water bottles are full.
While the Broncos tend to adhere to a structured
weekly roster, not all clubs believe it’s the way to
go. For the Sharks coaching staff, preparing for the
coming training week often incorporates
spontaneous creativity sparked by the needs of the
players.
Says Anderson “We don’t just sit down on Monday
and plan out the whole week because I believe by
doing that you can fall into a trap of doing things
that may be right for you but not necessarily for the
players. We have a meeting every .......more

* Euphoric welcome for hero Warriors
By ALAN PERROTT, NZH: They may have lost the grand final but the Warriors
are still heroes to their fans. The team arrived home to Auckland's
Ericsson Stadium last night - and the 2000 supporters who came to see them
went crazy.
As the fans waved their Warriors flags, the players filed onto the
stadium's northern stage about 7.15pm and paid tribute to the support they
had received - and said they were already looking ahead to next season.
Stand-in skipper Stacey Jones: "This is unbelievable. Two years ago I could
never have imagined this. It brings a tear to my eye. We'll win the comp
next year." Injured captain Monty Betham: "Next year has already
started."..more

* How the Roosters hid injuries
By Peter Frilingos, Daily Telegraph: Sydney's triumphant Roosters took the
field for Sunday night's grand final so battered by injury that they could
not have survived another week of competition, their coach Ricky Stuart
revealed yesterday.
While the public knew of lock Luke Ricketson's battle to overcome hamstring
damage in time for the game, the true extent of the team's injury toll was
a closely guarded secret.
The Daily Telegraph has learned that the majority of the team who won one
of the most physical grand finals in recent memory was carrying injuries,
and several were only on the paddock with the help of pain-killing injections.
Five members of the team now face surgery for shoulder injuries ..more

* A premiership and a Test call-up: Wing's wonder weekend
By Steve Mascord and Brad Walter, SMH: Craig Wing doesn't remember much
about the game that earned him his first Australian jersey, and the Sydney
Roosters utility admitted during the height of the grand-final victory
celebrations yesterday that he may need reminding this morning that he has
been selected for Saturday's Test against New Zealand.
Wing and his Clive Churchill Medal-winning clubmate Craig Fitzgibbon will
today move from Bondi Junction, where the premiership festivities continue,
to Coogee for the Kangaroos team medicals after being chosen along with
Bulldogs winger Hazem El Masri to make their Test debuts in Wellington ..more

* It takes blood and guts to play league
SMH: The grand final was a knock 'em down game that looked more like
extreme sport, John Huxley says.
It was the morning after the big, big night before and National Rugby
League chief David Gallop was still working the phones. "They've never
stopped ringing," he said, as Sydneysiders else-where enjoyed an extra day
off.
Most people were calling to discuss the match, and Gallop was happy to do
so. "It was a worthy climax to a season in which rugby league and all those
connected with the game regained their confidence," he said.
"A demonstration of fantastic skills. Intense defence. And great moments of
attack."
Certainly. But for all that, and more - trans-Tasman rivalry brought to the
final a passion traditionally associated with the State of Origin - was it
really the showpiece that so many tame commentators are claiming? ..more

* Morley issues 'join me' challenge
BBC: Adrian Morley has called on British players to head Down Under to play
in the Australian NRL. The Sydney Roosters enforcer, who collected an NRL
Grand Final winner's medal on Sunday, hopes that more of his countryman
will take up the challenge.
"It would be good for the national side," said the 25-year-old. "The Kiwis
have shown the more players they have got in the National Rugby League the
better they do internationally. I'm contracted next year so hopefully I
will stay a bit longer
"I think they've overtaken Great Britain ..more

* Tallis humbled by Test captaincy
AAP: Gorden Tallis accepts he may only get one crack at the Australian
rugby league captaincy and he has no desire to be remembered as a one-Test
loser.
Tallis was humble about his promotion to Australian captaincy for
Saturday's one-off Test against New Zealand in Wellington, acknowledging
Newcastle's Andrew Johns would have had the job had he not been out injured.
"It's a great honour but I'm sure Andrew would have been named captain,"
said Tallis, elated the distinction of leading his country had not eluded
him ..more

* Blood, guts and Rooster glory
By Steve Mascord, SMH: It was a grand final of concussion, blood and
courage and the Sydney Roosters last night survived it to win their first
premiership in 27 years.
Battling the effects of thunderous tackles, gaping wounds, sickening head
collisions and painful long-term injuries, the Roosters and the New Zealand
Warriors played out a fearsome decider before 80,130 fans and a huge
Australasian television audience.
Inspired by a bloodied and bandaged former Australian captain Brad Fittler,
the Roosters definitively shrugged off their cafe latte image by
out-muscling their rivals to emerge handsome 30-8 winners at the Olympic
stadium.
A try to man-of-the-match Craig Fitzgibbon with 14 minutes to go - his
third in as many premiership deciders - was enough to guarantee the Bondi
Junction club's championship drought ended and the title returned to a
Sydney club for the first time in six years ..more
