Ricketson in Test selection puzzle
By PAUL KENT: Should representative selection be a reward for good
club form, or because those players assembled stand the best chance
of winning?
Put on your thinking caps, people, or head to the back of the class,
it is about time football got philosophical.
Here's a quick quiz to add to that aneurysm:
Should Luke Ricketson make the Australian team because he has been
the outstanding ball-running lock in the series, or should he be
overlooked because Australian coach Chris Anderson prefers a ball-
player rather than a ball-runner?
Take your time, because everybody will be quick to claim Ricketson's
form for NSW deserves a Kangaroo jersey. And it does, but Ricketson
knows as much as anybody knows, you don't always get what you deserve
in this world. He's worked towards a Test jersey for years and hasn't
got one.
And while some may argue his case now, remember he may have been
selected for the Blues only because NSW coach Phil Gould preferred to
go with three ball-runners rather than different formation of two
ball-runners and one ball-player, a system the Australian coach
prefers.
That's why Anderson says, "You've got the best three runners, but
he's ignoring the best ball-player," when talking of the original
Blues line-up. "I'm looking at it a bit different. The best ball-
player could be missing out. It's a different view on who you think
the best players are.
"They've ignored a ball-playing lock for a running lock, so who's to
say?"
Turn it around and you see Anderson's point.
Gould has picked three ball runners in his back row and, if the old
selection system still prevailed, they'd have every right to believe
they will be picked for Australia after dominating at Origin.

Heat on Chris Anderson
By PETER FRILINGOS: Embattled Sharks coach Chris Anderson faces a
board review at the end of the season following the club's plunge to
second last on the Telstra Premiership table.
Sunday's embarrassing 44-12 loss to fellow strugglers Wests Tigers
saw the Sharks plummet to one spot away from the bottom rung.
Anderson said last night he intended to see out his contract until
the end of next year even if the Sharks failed to make the final
eight.
"Despite Sunday's ordinary performance I believe the club is in a
stronger position than it was last year," Anderson said yesterday.
Sharks chairman Barry Pierce said the club was not happy with its
position.
"We're very disappointed in being second last on the ladder," Pierce
said.
"Chris does have another year to go on his contract.
"I hope we can turn things around over the next few weeks.
"Chris has already said he wants to be judged on his performance at
the end of the season and I agree with him.
"So there will definitely be a review at the end of the season."
Pierce said none of his fellow board members had raised the question
of Anderson's future with the club.
"No, that has not happened, we will be looking at the situation at
the end of the year," Pierce said.
The coach is adamant his methods will succeed.

PJ Marsh to miss rest of NRL season
New Zealand Warriors rugby league hooker PJ Marsh will undergo
surgery on his neck next week, TV One reported last night.
It is likely to rule him out for the rest of the National Rugby
League season.
Initial investigations confirmed Marsh had suffered ligament damage
to his neck during the match against Parramatta on June 14.
However, more recent investigations showed he required surgery to
overcome the neck problem, TV One's Late Edition said.

Paul Vautin severs all ties
By Dean Ritchie: INFLUENTIAL Manly identity Paul Vautin last night
quit as a football club board member, claiming he wanted to prevent
the embattled Sea Eagles from further haemorrhaging.
Vautin's shock resignation, effective immediately, means one of
Manly's most famous players now has no official connection with the
club.
His resignation came via a hand-written letter sent to Manly chief
executive Ian Thomson, a copy which has been obtained by The Daily
Telegraph.
The former Manly and Test player announced a fortnight ago he would
stand down as chairman and as a member of the board at the club's AGM
in December.
However Vautin has elected to walk immediately.
Vautin wrote: "I have only ever done my very best for this club as a
player and a board member and I leave now with my head held high and
my dignity intact.
"A lot of my acquaintances tell me that one problem I have is that I
love Manly. This won't change.
"I would like to thank my fellow board members Max Krilich, Peter
O'Dwyer, Joe Cross, Max Delmege and Rex Murphy for their unwavering
support, also the hard working staff of the football club, the
wonderful bunch of players and the coach in Peter Sharp.
"Chief executive Ian Thomson has always been a great friend and
inspiration to me. Mate it just wasn't to be.
"I bleed maroon and white and am proud to do so. I wish everyone at
Manly success for the rest of the season and beyond."
Manly Leagues Club chairman Ken Arthurson was last night shocked when
told Vautin the Channel Nine rugby league commentator had resigned.

Orr chooses Wigan
CASTLEFORD'S Great Britain stand-off Danny Orr has agreed to join
Wigan on a four-year contract from next season.
The 25 year old has finally ended speculation over his future by
agreeing to re-join his former Castleford coach Stuart Raper at the
JJB Stadium.
Orr had also been offered a contract by Hull, after weeks of
speculation surrounding his future.
"I wish to make a totally clean break from Castleford and move with
my family to the most famous and successful rugby league club in the
world," a statement from Orr this morning said.
"Although the time has come for a parting of the ways, I will always
look for the Castleford result first but I am now also eagerly
awaiting the opportunity to meet and play with some of the greatest
Rugby League names in the world.
"The coaching staff and fan base reflect all the qualities and
fanaticism required in a club to reach the top."
Orr will now finish the season with the Tigers.

ARL fighting to preserve integrity of 'Immortals'
Paul Malone: THREE "Immortals" have told the Australian Rugby League
they have extreme reservations about a plan to add a seventh player
to the elite list.
The ARL made the six Immortals the late Clive Churchill, John Raper,
Bob Fulton, Reg Gasnier, Graeme Langlands and Wally Lewis automatic
first inductees into an elite category of members of a Hall of Fame
it intends to open as a permanent tribute to the game.
But ARL chief executive Geoff Carr said the ARL had not been
consulted when a recent edition of Channel 9's Footy Show revealed
the program would join with Rugby League Week, which coined the
term "Immortals" in 1981 and selected them, to announce a seventh
member later this year.
Carr said he wanted to hear plans from Australian Consolidated Press
publisher Phil Scott at a meeting today, but he is prepared for the
ARL Hall of Fame to go it alone if necessary and use its own name,
such as "legends", and selection panel for the top echelon of its
Hall of Fame.
"Over the weekend I've spoken to Bozo (Fulton), Chang (Langlands) and
Chook (Raper) personally and they are concerned about the integrity
of the Immortals and would like the game to have some control over
it," Carr said yesterday.
"They expressed their desire to have it included in the Hall of Fame
so the game has some control over who gets in there and who doesn't.
"We have to talk to RLW urgently and see if they are going to induct
willy-nilly or have one every 10 years, or what. We could have the
situation where one of their Immortals isn't even elected to our Hall
of Fame."
Carr wants to invite about 150 people, drawn from the ranks of former
and current players, referees, administrators, journalists and
academics, to form a voting "college" to decide which players enter
the Hall of Fame and which are elevated from it to the Hall's elite
category.
"If RLW's attitude is 'It's ours and we'll do what we like with it',
we'll have to make some decisions. Hopefully, we can see some mutual
benefits in allowing us to use our college," he said.

GARY CHAMBERS NAMED NEW CUMBRIA COACH
Gary Chambers, the 33 year old Warrington assistant coach, has been
named as the head coach to the Cumbria county team that is scheduled
to play the New Zealand 'A' touring team at Whitehaven on Sunday,
October 19.
Former Prop forward Chambers joined Warrington from Cumbrian amateur
club Kells in 1989, and is currently working with Wolves' Head Coach
Paul Cullen.
He steps up to the county post having been head coach to the
Lancashire Junior Academy team who beat Yorkshire 2-0 in this
season's representative match programme.
The former BARLA international and tourist Chambers said: "This
appointment is a massive honour for me as a Cumbrian and I'm looking
forward to working with the players as well as the match.
"This game represents a massive opportunity for both me and the
Cumbrian players.
"There has long been a desire in Cumbria to prove that their county
team should be taken as seriously as the Lancashire and Yorkshire
teams and now we have a chance to show just what we can do against
what will be a strong side from New Zealand". Added Chambers:
"We shall be assessing which players will be available to Cumbria
over the next few weeks.
"There will be an opportunity to select Cumbrians playing in Super
League but we have to be mindful that there are also other
representative teams in operation at the time of the year.
"But when you think that there are Cumbrian players such as Steve
McCurrie (Widnes Vikings), Rob Purdham (London Broncos), Paul
Davidson (Halifax) and Ewan Dowse and Peter Lupton (Hull FC) all
playing at the highest levels of the game, it is an exciting process
we are embarking upon.
"Add into that equation that Whitehaven are playing well in National
League One and talented players at both Barrow Raiders and Workington
Town in National League Two and I have the opportunity to create a
useful side for Cumbria."

Bennett must stay: Gould
NSW coach Phil Gould won't discuss his State of Origin future but he
believes arch rival Wayne Bennett must stay on for Queensland's sake.
Bennett hasn't committed to next year, meaning Wednesday's third
Origin clash at Suncorp Stadium could be his last.
The Maroons risk a series whitewash after losing the opening matches
but Gould believes they would be in worse shape if Bennett decided to
concentrate solely on coaching the Brisbane Broncos.
"I know it's a drain on him and I know it's a drain on his club but
there is no one better prepared or experienced to do it," Gould said.
"He should coach Queensland while ever he's got the breath to do it.
"It's very hard for any other coach to come in and coach all those
Broncos and bring them all together in a week like he does.
"Queensland perform their best when he is the coach.
"For State of Origin's sake and Queensland's sake it's very important
that Wayne Bennett is their coach."
Gould said Bennett's decision would have no bearing on his future as
Blues coach, even though the pair have become the most decorated
Origin coaches.
But Gould had no doubt the series would continue to flourish even if
the rival coaches weren't on deck next year.
"Origin is at its absolute peak now. You can't not sell this game,"
he said.
"It's the greatest selling tool for rugby league.
"I don't think people are too worried about the result on Wednesday
night.
"They want to see a quality game of football and I think you're going
to get that without the pressure of a result on both side.
"It will be a very entertaining game and we're just here to put in a
good performance."
Maroons manager Chris Close has already publicly asked Bennett to
stay on while speculation continues that his assistant and Newcastle
coach Michael Hagan will take over next year.
Bennett first coached Queensland in 1986 and returned after the
Maroons were humiliated in 2000, steering them to a series victory
the following year.

Palm Island out of TDRL fixtures
By CHRIS ROOTS: Palm Island's future in the Townsville and Districts
Rugby League appears doomed after it was suspended from the
competition yesterday.
TDRL president John Willey held a phone hook-up with clubs yesterday
after Palm forfeited their second A grade game of the year against
Herbert River on Sunday.
The clubs agreed to suspend Palm Island from the TDRL until a board
meeting on July 21, where its future in the 2003 competition will be
decided.
Willey said he was unable to contact Palm Island officials yesterday
and expects it to be very difficult for them to stay in the TDRL.
"They have had a lot of chances and I feel, as a lot of people I have
spoken to do, that it will very hard for them to get back into the
competition," Willey said.
"It's very sad because on the field this year Palm Island haven't had
a player sent off, no other club has a record like that.
"It is just a pity they can't get their act together off the field."
Palm Island have had an unhappy year with the club financially
stretched after the Palm Island Council withdrew its support in June.

NEW ACADEMY FOUNDATION PILOT PROJECT LAUNCHED
Next weekend sees the first games to be played in the brand new
Academy Foundation Pilot Project, aimed at Year 11 players (under the
age of 16 years of age), at Clubs with a fully accredited Scholarship
Scheme.
This is potentially one of the most vital pieces of development work
to have been undertaken since the advent of the Academy competition,
providing as it does, the very first opportunity for a young player
to put on the jersey of his Club in a competitive game.
The purpose of the Academy Foundation Competition is to enable clubs
to grade and prepare players for their Academy teams.
Clubs with accredited Scholarship Schemes will be eligible to enter
the short 5-match campaign for 1st year Academy (Under 16) players.
With the aim of providing clubs with the opportunity of forming a
more educated assessment of the first year player in readiness for a
professional career and to advise each individual of his future
pathway, be it in the professional or amateur sectors.

Chris McKenna called up by Ireland
Australia Test player Chris McKenna is set to play for Ireland in the
European Nations Cup at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old Leeds centre, who was a member of the Australia team
that thrashed Great Britain 64-10 in Sydney 12 months ago, qualifies
for Ireland through his Belfast-born grandfather.
He is one of 21 Super League players called up by new coach Daryl
Powell, the Leeds Rhinos boss, although doubts surround the fitness
of Hull second-rower Shayne McMenemy, who has been ruled out for the
season with a dislocated elbow.
Widnes winger Paul Devlin is poised to make his rugby league
international debut after previously playing for Ireland's Under-21
team at rugby union.
The 31-strong squad, captained by Wigan prop Terry O'Connor, also
includes three players from the Irish domestic league in Dave
Hancock, of Dublin's East Coast Eagles, and Cork Bulls duo Mark
O'Connel and Simon Buckley.
Ireland will play France and Scotland in their pool matches of the
European Nations Cup, with England A, Wales and Russia meeting in the
other group.
Ireland squad: L Finnerty (Halifax), S Prescott (Hull), F Cummins
(Leeds), A Stewart (St Helens), C De Chenu (Sheffield), C Halpenny
(Wakefield), R Smyth (Warrington), C McKenna (Leeds), M Eagar
(Castleford), M Golden (Widnes), T Martyn (Leigh), G Clinch

X FACTOR PAUL COULD BE BACK FOR PLAY-OFFS
Robbie Paul's optimistic he could return for the play-offs. Only he
will know if he's fit enough, but Robbie's adamant he's a quick
healer. Of course, he'd have to get medical approval, but it would be
a huge boost for us. He's the sort of player Brian Noble would have
no hesitation about throwing into a big game, even the Grand Final,
because he's got that X Factor.
And if some stories are to be believed, two of my team-mates will be
jetting down under after the Grand Final. Tevita Vaikona and Lesley
Vainikolo have taken some stick in the dressing room because they
could play for Tonga in the Rugby Union World Cup. The Grand Final is
on October 18th, but they could join Tonga afterwards - and they
wouldn't be bad players for Tonga to have.
Robbie may be injured, but it's not all bad news for Bradford,
though, because Michael Withers is back soon. He's a real quality
player and his return will help compensate for Robbie's absence.
And we're facing up to a key stage in our season. We've got three
games in just over a week which will play a big part in determining
where we finish in the league. I expect Brian Noble has some plans to
rotate his players, but we've got a big squad so hopefully that won't
be a problem.
I know we could do with a break. I was rested for the Wakefield game
and was still exhausted after the Origin match.
And I was glad we didn't have a game this weekend. The heat must have
made it very difficult for the players, especially if you go behind.
That's why I wasn't surprised to see some high-scoring games this
weekend. Hull's 46-10 defeat to Widnes didn't shock me either; I
think they've been hanging on for a few weeks so maybe it was a bit
overdue.
Huddersfield got another great result, beating Leeds. I heard Stanley
Gene was talking them up for a play-off place; he's every right to,
though they are one of two or three clubs who can only hope for sixth
place at best.
But I never expected them to struggle. I've got a lot of time for
Tony Smith and Huddersfield are excellently coached. I expect he's
got a three- or four-year plan to turn them into a top team and he'll
look to add some quality.
And, like several other teams, they've sprung a few surprises this
season. The main reason, I'd say, is the higher tempo they're playing
at.
One surprise for me was hearing Danny Orr will join Wigan. I expected
him to move to Hull, but he looks a great signing. He probably wants
a chance to play in the major finals - but don't we all?

Joey tipped to play
New South Wales captain Andrew Johns is expected to play in
Wednesdays State of Origin III at Suncorp Stadium.
The halfback is in doubt for the match against Queensland after
battling a viral infection since last week, but is set to fly to
Brisbane on Monday to join his teammates, hoping to prove his fitness
on the day of the match.
Bulldogs halfback Brent Sherwin has been placed on standby should
Johns fail to come up, but the Newcastle skipper told The Daily
Telegraph on Sunday that he hopes to recover in time to play.
"It really floored me and I was that crook last night," Johns
said. "I still feel really weak and I am just going to kick back here
and do nothing at all and hopefully, I'll be able to join the boys up
there tomorrow or Tuesday."
"I flew back to Sydney with the rest of the boys on Friday and it
started to hit me around lunchtime yesterday (Saturday). By late
arvo, I was really struggling and I had to call the doctor last night
I was that bad."
"At the moment, I'm just that weak that I'm not sure what to think.
But with a day or two's rest, hopefully I'll be OK."

Reardon charged
Bulldogs forward Steve Reardon faces a one-match suspension after
being one of four players charged by the NRL judiciary.
Reardon was hit with a grade-one careless high tackle charge for an
incident during Friday's win over Brisbane.
Due to his poor record, Reardon would still be outed for a game even
if he enters an early guilty plea.
Brisbane's Casey McGuire, Canberra's Ben Cross and Melbourne's Glen
Turner were the other players charged.
McGuire was charged with a grade-two careless high tackle for a hit
during Friday's loss to the Bulldogs.
He will avoid suspension if he enters an early guilty plea.
Cross was hit with a striking charge for his tackle on St George
Illawarra's Mark Riddell during the Raiders' win on Sunday.
The 24-year-old faces one match on the sidelines.
Turner was charged with a grade two careless high-tackle and will

Bad habits rife as Guns lose their way
By ADAM GARDINI: old habits again hurt the North Queensland Young
Guns as they suffered their third consecutive loss in the shape of a
36-16 defeat at the hands of Queensland Cup heavyweights Ipswich Jets
at Bendigo Bank Oval on Saturday.
After starting well to lead 10-nil through early tries to Wallace
Solomona and Michael Meigan, the onset of poor ball control inside
their own half cost the Young Guns dearly with the Jets capitalising
to lead 12-10 at halftime.
In the second half it was more of the same for North Queensland, the
Ipswich backline having a field day with halfback Ricky Bird bagging
a double and leading the Jets to their third straight victory.
A frustrated Young Guns coach Adrian Thomson said it was an all too
familiar scenario for North Queensland who have often been their own
worst enemy this season.
"I thought we played pretty well for the first 20 to 25 minutes of
the first half," Thomson said.
"They (Ipswich) were out on their feet and we were going to have them
on toast.
"But then we went back to our old habits of coughing up ball and
became a little impatient."
However, Thomson said some positives to come out of the game were the
performances of youngsters Tyler Smith and Matt Scott and the
promising Queensland Cup debut of Nathaniel Bowman.
