A RLCM COACHING QUOTE

".. it's a matter of creating the consistency in creating and
absorbing pressure, you can't have one without the other and be
successful. Firstly, if you are consistenly under pressure there is a
reason reason for it and that needs to be identified immediately - it
might be because you're turning the ball over or kicking poorly - but
secondly, if you are under attack you need to be able to defend it
and see the battle out........" Ricky Stuart from his article titled
'Absorbing Pressure' which appears in RLCM Book 28 - Printed September 2002

RLCM COMMENT - BRONCOS LACK OF EFFECTIVE KICKING GAME GAVE ROOSTERS
ENTRY TO GRAND FINAL.

By Gary Roberts http://www.rlcm.com.au/carrara.htm

RLCM: The Sydney Roosters defeated the Brisbane Broncos at Aussie
Stadium before a crowd of 28,251 on Saturday night.

There have been reports that refereeing decisions went against the
Broncos, that is up for individuals to decide.

Decision making and taking the correct options are a major part of
the game of rugby league, but the results from the last play options
that Darren Lockyer took on Saturday night had his team under
constant pressure.

The Broncos led at the break 12 - 8, which in it self is a problem
that the Roosters will have to rectify before next week. The Roosters
were the better team in the first 40 minutes, but were behind on the
scoreboard.

Having great defence is one thing, but being able to convert the
spoils that are gained from the strong defence into points is what
allows teams to build a platform that win games.

At halftime the Broncos were in front on the scoreboard and given
some luck and with an even share of the ball in the second half, it
could have been expected the big name Broncos players would lead the
younger players to another Grand Final appearance.

What happened to the Broncos in the second half was something
commentators and spectators have been witnessing in the latter part
of their season and that is, they have not been playing well with too
many errors in their game.

The Broncos during the second half did have a fair share of the ball,
but were unable to create pressure and they lacked the patience to do
so.

It was not the Roosters defence or refereeing decisions during this
half that caused the problems.

The poor kicking game by the Broncos kickers and the inability to
gain effective restarts to maintain the pressure is what caused their
problems and eventually the loss of the game.

Broncos Second Half Plays.

The Broncos problem in the second half began with the kick off when
they popped the ball down to the Roosters 20m centre of the field for
an easy uncontested catch.

A kick like that is not expected from experienced high priced players
or maybe was it just a technical kicking error.

Play 1 Ball kicked dead by Lockyer, 20m restart by Roosters. [?]

Play 2 Ball K/O 80m

Play 3 Lockyer kicks the ball dead, 20m restart by Roosters [?]

Play 4 Lockyer short kick from 55m for Walker, but did not come off.
[?]

Play 5 Good kick on 5th from 50m creates some pressure.

Play 6 Langer throws a poor pass on this bad side, Mullins picks up
and scores - Score Roosters 14-12 after goal

Play 7 Langer kicks into touch on 5th [?]

Play 8 Lockyer blindside chip kick, creates some pressure but
Roosters get back to 60m

Play 9 Lockyer kicks from 20m to Roosters 20m uncontested, ball back
to 40m for first play

Play 10 Berrigan kicks from 55m to 15m ball uncontested Roosters back
to 35m for first play

Play 11 Lockyer kicks from 70m on 5th to 15m McGuire flattens Hodges,
penalty against Broncos

Play 12 Kick on 5th from 55m contested

Play 13 Broncos receive penalty

Play 14 Lockyer kicks on 5th from 80m ball dead, 20 restart to
Roosters

Play 15 Bronco get to 70m, Lockyer trapped with ball turnover on 5th

Play 16 Broncos k/o 4th tackle 40m

Play 17 Berrigan k/o receiving kick from Roosters

Play 18 Kick at 60m on 5th kick to 10m

Play 19 Scrum Broncos feed

Full time Roosters 16 defeated Broncos 12

The Broncos lost this game by making poor last play decisions during
the second half, they lacked patience, they lacked effective go
forward, their ruck defence and markers were found wanting. The time
has come for the Broncos coaching staff to make the break from the
past and begin the regrowth of the younger players that they have in
their vast nursery.

The Roosters out muscled them, had better line speed, their markers
were effective, their attitude in defence was superior, their
kicking/chase game effective.

Printed 2001

CAN YOU COACH VISION?

You can enhance it by doing things like simulations and role-play. A
lot of teams are playing aggressive styles of training games in-house
now to see what players have the right nerves and composure under
pressure.

There are some good young players that have vision but because of the
hierarchy in the team they have to wait until their time comes to get
the ball before they can show it.

The reason so many older players are considered the visionaries in
their team is because they’ve had to bide their time; even when
Andrew Johns first came into the top grade he never got the ball as
often as he does now.

Time spent by the individual thinking about the game can improve
vision but a lot of it is intuitive as well as trial and error.

HOW DO YOU MENTALLY PREPARE YOUR TEAM TO PLAY?

It changes week in week out. Sometimes you start as underdogs and
other weeks as favourites and I’ve found that changes the way the
players approach the game. A lot of people say to me ‘how come
you play so well at the back end of games, in the final 20
minutes’, and I think that comes down to their mental approach.
Sometimes we seem to get so wound up and then all of a sudden
we’ll let in a couple of soft tries and the opposition skips 12
points clear and then we relax because the pressure is off.

We need to feel comfortable within ourselves when we’re still
under the hammer. I don’t spend long sessions with players before
a game; I just sow a seed with a player early in the week and then
quietly bring them along so they are ready come kick off. It’s no
good if they’re ready on Thursday because they’ll be burnt
out on Sunday.

The veteran players play a big role in the team’s preparation as
well – Stacey Jones and Kevin Campion usually take us for our
final training run before a game.

CAN YOU COACH PATIENCE?

I haven’t found a good method yet to teach patience so it’s
trial and error for me at the moment.

Good teams and individuals maintain composure and can therefore take
advantage of opportunities when they arise rather than pushing
for them when they’re not really there. When a mistake is made
I’m looking to see the player doesn’t make that mistake again
– if he does, to me that illustrates poor patience, poor
composure.

Teams leading the competition have enormous patience and composure
and when the pressure is on they won’t stray from their original
plan ....................MORE.
