NRL Club News from SMH - Wednesday

SYDNEY ROOSTERS: With seven players involved in Origin I, the
Roosters named a barely recognisable side for Friday night's Bulldogs
game. Into the starting side come former Newtown winger Steve
Skinnon, ex-Eel Eric Grothe, rookie Lelea Paea, utility Michael
Crocker, prop Todd Payten and ex-Penrith forwards Ned Catic and Fred
Petersen.

WARRIORS: New Zealand Test five-eighth Lance Hohaia headed a trio of
players dropped last night by the out-of-form Warriors. Experienced
centre John Carlaw and promising prop Evarn Tuimavave also felt coach
Daniel Anderson's axe ahead of Saturday night's home game against
Cronulla. Senior players have called a crisis meeting to discuss
their worrying slump, which has seen the Warriors win just one game
in six weeks. Monty Betham replaces Queensland rake PJ Marsh at nine,
Vince Mellars is the new centre, Sione Faumuina gets a start at lock,
Motu Tony is pivot and Richard Villasanti makes his first appearance
of the season off the bench. Centre Vinnie Anderson yesterday re-
signed with the club, which will trial a new playing strip this
weekend.

BULLDOGS: Five-eighth Johnathan Thurston has been dropped to premier
league for Friday night's matches against the Roosters, with Travis
Norton returning from a hamstring injury at lock and Braith Anasta
going back to pivot. Willie Mason replaces Origin selection Steve
Price in the front row, with Glen Hughes coming into the pack. Anasta
deputises as captain.

CANBERRA: Michael Hodgson and Troy Thompson return from injury on a
five-man bench for Saturday night's game against Parramatta. Adam
Mogg (ankle) will be another week.

CRONULLA: With prop Jason Stevens injured and centre Phil Bailey in
the NSW squad, Chris Anderson has chosen a youthful side for
Saturday's trip to Ericsson Stadium in Auckland. Jarrad Anderson, 23,
replaces Bailey but the experienced Danny Nutley will take the place
of Stevens. Matt Hilder is the new five-eighth, supplanting the
benched Jye Mullane.


MANLY: Peter Sharp has included former rugby union player Sam Harris
on a five-man bench for Sunday's encounter with Wests Tigers.

MELBOURNE: Ned Kelly lookalike Kirk Reynoldson has been moved to the
Storm's front row for NSW Origin call-up Robbie Kearns ahead of
Sunday's appointment with South Sydney. Dallas Johnson and Ryan
Hoffman join the squad at the expense of Robert Tanielu.

NORTH QUEENSLAND: Neil Sweeney and Chris Muckert come into the
Cowboys backline to replace Origin recruits Paul Bowman and Matt
Sing. Kevin Campion takes over as skipper against Penrith on Saturday
night and John Buttigieg starts in place of prop Jaiman Lowe. Young
front-rower Dean Limpus last night re-signed.

PARRAMATTA: Willie Tonga has been called up for NSW centre Jamie Lyon
in the Eels team which takes on Canberra on Saturday night.

PENRITH: The promising Steve Turner has been added to the bench for
Saturday night's match in Townsville. The Panthers started their
winning run against Souths in round six and hope to stretch it to
eight games this weekend.

SOUTH SYDNEY: Shane Walker is the latest Rabbitohs halfback - with
Willie Peters and Brett Kearney both out injured - for Sunday's game
against Melbourne. Jason Death takes Walker's place at hooker and
Jamie Fitzgerald comes into the squad for Justin Smith (knee). Last
Saturday's late withdrawals, Wise Kativerata and Paul Stringer, are
back.

WESTS TIGERS: Coach Tim Sheens has made a couple of changes despite
Saturday night's rousing success against the Bulldogs. Prop Corey
Pearson is out of Sunday's encounter with Manly due to a knee injury
and Chris Paterson is back from a calf problem to take his place.
Willie Manu returns from suspension, replacing Chris Heighnington.

Blues great takes Timmins under his wing


By DEAN RITCHIE: FORMER Blues captain Laurie Daley last night
outlined his plans to help Shaun Timmins settle into the unfamiliar
role of NSW State of Origin five-eighth.

Timmins played five-eighth for club side St George Illawarra in mid-
May this season but had not played that position for the previous
seven years.

With Trent Barrett unavailable through injury and Braith Anasta
overlooked, NSW selectors opted to play Timmins at five-eighth for
the opening State of Origin match next Wednesday in Brisbane.

A former great NSW five-eighth and now Blues assistant coach, Daley
said he would work closely this week with Timmins.

The pair already have a working relationship with Daley the assistant
coach to Nathan Brown at the Dragons.

Daley spoke about how he might assist Timmins in settling into his
new role.

"We have had normal chit-chat through the week," Daley said.

Anasta a chance as Origin utility


By Steve Mascord: Snubbed Bulldog Braith Anasta is under
consideration for a surprise Origin reprieve after the Blues
confirmed last night they would take an extra player to Brisbane.

The 21-year-old's fall from grace was one of the most significant
aspects of team selections on Monday, Shaun Timmins being chosen out
of position at five-eighth after Anasta had seemingly been promised
the spot.

But with second-rower Ben Kennedy in doubt with a hamstring injury
and late mishaps a big part of recent State of Origin history, the
2001 Kangaroo may yet play a role in the game against Queensland next
Wednesday at Suncorp Stadium.

"It's been recent policy with the state team to take a travelling
reserve in case something goes wrong," NSW team manager Gerard Raper
said. "We'll look at someone over the weekend."

Sources in the Blues camp confirmed Anasta - because of his ability
to play five-eighth, lock, centre and wing - was one of a handful of
candidates for the job. Others mentioned in dispatches included
Manly's Steve Menzies and South Sydney's Bryan Fletcher.

I feel much more confident when Blues have a blue


By Roy Masters: If the NSW State of Origin team was a psychiatric
patient, the diagnosis would be straight-forward: chronic status
anxiety.

As soon as the Blues achieve favouritism for a series, a calamity or
crisis strikes.

Witness the recent blow-up between coach Phil Gould and captain
Andrew Johns, or Wayne Pearce's bonding camp which ended with two
players falling off wayward horses.

However, all was calm at the team's Coogee hotel when the players
gathered on Monday for their first night out. Gould sat in a circle
with his assistant coaches - ex-forwards John Cartwright, David
Gillespie and Dean Pay - all looking like used-up legends longing to
make one more big tackle.

The players sat at nearby tables, like satellites orbiting around the
sun, all dressed in Wizard blue.

Whatever the motive behind the coach-captain spat, it was very clear
Gould is very much in charge. He communicated all his wishes via his
team of assistants, which grew with the arrival of two former backs,
NSW selector Laurie Daley and Manly lower-grade coach Des Hasler.

Gould's long-term trainer, Ron "Dorian" Palmer, collected the menu
choices of the players, ahead of phoning through the orders before
the team dined late at the Clovelly Hotel, the de facto headquarters
of the National Rugby League.

NRL chief executive David Gallop, leading player-manager Wayne
Beavis, ARL chief executive Geoff Carr, head salary cop Ian Schubert
and Gould all deem it their local.

Warriors make three key changes


The Warriors have made three significant selection changes as they
seek some attacking spark against the Cronulla Sharks in their
National Rugby League match at Ericsson Stadium on Saturday night.


Boasting just one win from the last five weeks, the most significant
Warriors change comes at stand-off where Motu Tony replaces Lance
Hohaia, who struggled with an ankle knock during the loss to Penrith
in Sydney on Saturday.

Vince Mellars makes his debut at centre, replacing John Carlaw, while
Karl Te Mata gets his second game, replacing Evarn Tuimavave on the
bench.

Coach Daniel Anderson has chosen a forward pack of bull-like
proportions, replacing PJ Marsh who is on Origin duty with Monty
Betham and shifting Sione Faumuina up from the bench to start at
lock. There are three forwards, including two props, on the bench.

"We're looking to get back to a Warriors brand of football, to
challenge them in the middle of the park," Anderson said.

"Sure, we've picked a big side, so we've sent them a signal we're
going to play a muscle game, none too subtle."

Baby Blues face mature Maroons


NSW must overcome Queensland's massive start in the experience stakes
to win the 2003 State of Origin rugby league series.

Queensland's advantage is one of the biggest in Origin history
heading into game one at Suncorp Stadium.

Wayne Bennett's squad of warm favourites boasts more than double the
number of Origin games than the new-look Blues, who will blood five
rookies.

Chasing their first series win since 2000, the Blues have played a
combined total of just 59 Origins, compared to the Maroons' 128.

The massive gulf in experience is even greater than last year when
the "Baby Blues" - featuring seven newcomers for the series opener -
tallied 53 matches to Queensland's 117.

NSW's turbulent build-up has led to bookmakers installing Queensland
as the series favourite for the first time ever - and the selection
of five centres and no specialist five-eighth in Phil Gould's squad
won't exactly have punters rushing to back the Blues.

But NSW assistant coach Laurie Daley said the Maroons' superior
experience at Origin level was of no concern to the Blues.

"None at all. We haven't even discussed it and won't discuss it," he
said.

Daley, who doubles up as one of NSW's four selectors, admitted
Melbourne prop Robbie Kearns' vast know-how had been an influencing
factor in his inclusion in the Blues' starting line-up.

"It did, but (it was) more of the fact that he's playing good footy
and the other stuff was a bonus," Daley said.

"Kearns certainly wouldn't have been here if his form hadn't have
warranted it.

"His form warranted it, plus he's also got a bit of experience. So it
went hand in hand."

Dean Limpus puts pen to paper for club


By ADAM GARDINI: DEAN Limpus has become the first significant signing
for the North Queensland Cowboys this season after yesterday settling
on a three-year contract with the club.

The deal capped off a brilliant month for the exciting youngster who
was earlier rewarded with selection in the Queensland under-19 team.

Coach Graham Murray said Limpus was the type of player the club was
looking for.

"We see a lot of good things in his game and in him as a player,"
Murray said.

"So having him for three years is great. He's the style of a bloke we
want around the place -- a big strong young bloke who's committed to
the club."

Chief executive Denis Keeffe said the signing of the 18-year-old
demonstrated the club's commitment to the rugby league nursery that
is North Queensland.

"Dean is a typical example of the great talent available in North
Queensland and I'm very happy that he has signed with the Cowboys,"
Keeffe said.

Sweeney will fill the void left by Queensland State-of-Origin
representatives Paul Bowman and Matt Sing for the North Queensland
Cowboys at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night.

The pair were yesterday named in a reshuffled Cowboys line-up to take
on Penrith which included Shane Muspratt at five-eighth, John
Buttigieg as starting prop with Young Guns centre Jason Barsley
moving onto the bench.

Myles has effectively slotted into a number of different positions
for the Cowboys this season and appeared to have cemented his place
at five-eighth after several top performances in recent weeks.

However, Myles will switch to cover the vacant right centre spot left
by Bowman with Cowboys coach Graham Murray indicating Myles'
versatility will again be used to the team's advantage.

"We have used him on the wing, fullback, five-eighth and centre so
he's very very handy to have in any footy club," Murray said.

"We'll put him back into the centres where we've used him earlier in
the year.

"But it gives us a bit of flexibility there too with Shane Muspratt,
who can go back into the forwards, David Myles at five-eighth and
Barsley in the centres.

"I just want them all to play like we did last weekend -- plenty of
commitment and a bit of flair."

Murray said Barsley had earned his spot in the Cowboys side after
some good form for the Young Guns since returning from injury.

YORKSHIRE GO FOR NEW SKIPPER


By Ian Laybourn: Yorkshire selected a third different captain in as
many years when Castleford stand-off Danny Orr was named as the White
Rose skipper for the annual Origin clash with Lancashire on July 2.

Lancashire, inevitably, will be captained by Wigan and Great Britain
skipper Andy Farrell, who has led the Red Rose men to victory in all
three county clashes since they were revived in 2001.

The 25-year-old Orr, who has led the Tigers for the last two seasons,
was the choice of new Yorkshire coach Graham Steadman, his Castleford
club boss, to succeed Widnes' former Leeds scrum-half Ryan Sheridan,
who led the side in both games last year under Bradford coach Brian
Noble.

Bradford hooker James Lowes was Yorkshire's captain for the inaugural
Origin game two years ago and Orr got the nod ahead of two of Lowes'
team-mates, Stuart Fielden and Jamie Peacock.

"I was seriously considering both players with a view to having Danny
as vice-captain but Brian thought it might be a little bit too much
for them, especially in the case of Stuart, who is coming back from a
long-term injury," said Steadman.

Orr, who used last year's series as a springboard to launch his full
international career against New Zealand, is relishing the
opportunity to further press his claims for a place in the end-of-
season Ashes Series.

"These are the games you want to play in," Orr told a news conference
at Odsal, venue for next month's match.

"You are up against the cream of the crop and it's very exciting."

Paul Cullen, the Warrington coach who has taken over the Lancashire
reins from Ian Millward, admitted his choice of captain was one of
the easiest decisions he will have to make.

TOP FLIGHT MORE SUPER THAN EVER


By Andy Hampson: It's become almost as common as the shouts
of "get 'em onside ref" from the terraces but the cliche that every
year Super League gets more competitive seems more pertinent than
ever.

One of the 'big four' in Bradford may still be favourites for the
title but their defeat by London at the weekend is proof that the
competition is tougher than ever.

Champions St Helens have lost to Huddersfield and Wakefield this
year, Wigan have come unstuck against the Broncos and been pushed all
the way by Warrington while Leeds have drawn twice and won two games
by a single point. Castleford are fourth in the table and Warrington,
Widnes and London are within spitting distance of the top six.

Only Halifax appear incapable of joining in the fun at the moment as
they sit at the bottom of the table without a single point to their
name, although that is partly due to a two-point deduction.

Mason set for early St Helens debut


By Dave Hadfield: St Helens' new arrival, Keith Mason, is ready to
make his debut for the club against Wigan on Friday.

The former Wakefield prop only arrived last weekend after 18 months
in Australia with Melbourne Storm, but, with John Stankevitch out
injured, he could be rushed straight into the side for the derby.

"We're going to have to bring a forward in and it's a strong
possibility that Keith could play," said his new coach, Ian
Millward. "If he comes through today's session alright he'll
definitely be in the 17."

Mason has also revealed that he could have joined Wigan, who, along
with Hull, showed interest when he became available last week.

Salford on Red alert for Martyn


Neil Barker: SALFORD could face a challenge from promotion rivals
Leigh in their bid to sign Saints star Tommy Martyn.

Super League champions St Helens are surprisingly releasing Martyn at
the end of this season.

And Reds bosses say they will monitor the situation with a view to
making a move for the experienced stand-off.

Football director Steve Simms said: "We are always interested in
recruiting top quality players and Tommy is still a quality player.

'Talented player'

"We will assess what is needed for next year at the end of this
season. We obviously plan to be back in Super League and we'll have
to wait to see what happens.

But he added: "I am sure Leigh will also be very interested in Tommy
because he's a local lad.

"I tried to sign him for Leigh when I coached at Hilton Park and he
was with Oldham.

"He is a player I have always rated highly and I think he is very
talented.

"Tommy is one of those players who has done it all. He has also
looked after himself and still has a lot to offer, but we don't know
yet what we will require for the squad."

Reds' immediate priority is Sunday's important Arriva Trains Cup semi-
final clash with Batley.

Neil Lowe and Andrew Kirk picked up knocks in the win over Dewsbury
and Simms said: "The game is a big event and we are hoping for a
decent crowd.

"Batley are a good side and were unlucky not to reach the Grand Final
last year."

Halifax sign Aussie trialist


HALIFAX have finally completed work permit details to bring
Australian Scott MacDougall to the club on a month's trial.

MacDougall - the younger brother of Newcastle Knights and Australia
star Adam - has been playing in National League Two with Gateshead
Thunder.

"It was a move initiated by him which proves he's keen," Halifax
coach Tony Anderson told the Halifax Courier.

"I haven't seen him play but it's another body for us and we'll see
what he can do."

MacDougall has played standd off, hooker and loose forward at Thunder.

St Albans Pull Off Huge Away Win

St Albans Centurions have pulled off one of the shock results of the
National League Three season so far with a magnificent 40-18 victory
away at Coventry Bears.

Two tries from Tom Eisenhuth and one each by Leigh Strid, Quentin
Kersh, Craig Gunnell plus an incredible eight goals from eight
attempts by Steve Toon gave Peter Tonkin's side a fabulous victory
over the reigning RL Conference champions.

Raiders at full strength

Table-topping Canberra has named a full strength team to host
Parramatta in Saturday night's National Rugby League match at
Canberra Stadium.

Despite their impressive start to the 2003 season, the Raiders didn't
have one player selected for State of Origin, leaving everyone
available to tackle the Eels.

Coach Matt Elliott has stuck with the same starting team that escaped
with a 20-14 win over Cronulla last Friday night.

The team is:

Clinton Schifcofske, Michael Robertson, Phil Graham, Joel Monaghan,
Jamaal Lolesi, Mark McLinden, Brad Drew, Ryan O'Hara, Simon Woolford
(c), Luke Davico, Ruben Wiki, Ian Hindmarsh, Jason Croker.
Interchange: Troy Thompson, Tyran Smith, Sean Rutgerson, Terry

Fitness Conditioner seeks R.L. Position

Ryan McNeely - Fitness Conditioner and Senior Coach

My name is Ryan McNeely; I am currently self-employed, contracted to
a fitness consultancy as their head of strength conditioning.

I am a sports science graduate working within professional English
football with extensive knowledge and experience of designing and
implementing physical conditioning programmes.

Over the past four years I have been involved with 20 professional
football clubs including Manchester City, Leeds United and Bolton
Wanderers.

I have consistently delivered and developed season long conditioning
programmes, incorporating all aspects of fitness, tailored to each
individuals needs, within each club.

I have organised and run, strength, speed, agility and sports
specific endurance sessions for large groups, from academy level
through to full internationals, on a daily basis.

I am an ex-rugby league professional and would like an opportunity to
use my knowledge and experience in some capacity within the sport.

I am very passionate about the sport of Rugby League and have been
involved playing at amateur and professional level, and now coaching,
for over 10 years.

I am presently senior coach qualified, with a successful local club
where I oversee all aspects of coaching and conditioning from junior
through to open age.

I use my academic knowledge and experience of the game together with
my coaching and man management skills to create a positive and
enjoyable working atmosphere.

I believe I am always learning, therefore I continue to experiment
and develop my ideas within training to provide a great stimulus for
players to develop themselves in the game.

I have a lot of experience of training professional sportsmen and I
believe I can bring a great deal of knowledge and practical
applications of scientifically proven theories to your training.

I am professional, a good communicator and co-ordinate well with
other members of staff to deliver a complete physical conditioning
programme.

I hope that I have interested you enough to make you want to discuss
any ideas you might have where I may be able to assist in the
effectiveness of your teams future performance.
