Lacklustre Warriors a worry

By PETER JESSUP: Stacey Jones takes over the captaincy and Wairangi
Koopu gets the tackling job at lock as the Warriors adjust to the
suspension of Monty Betham ahead of Friday's encounter with the
Bulldogs in Wellington.

At fullback, Brent Webb replaces Motu Tony, who has struggled with a
shoulder injury for the past two games and is being rested.

Vinnie Anderson is rewarded for big defence by moving up from the
bench to start in the centres in place of John Carlaw, who has
struggled with a hip flexor problem and therefore with form. But
there was some good news, with hooker P. J. Marsh cleared of a
suspected broken thumb and named to play.

Team management hopes the extra responsibility for Jones will spark
his game in Wellington. He has been playing smartly, but is yet to
show his best individually.

"He enjoys the captaincy and we hope the change that comes with
responsibility will be good for him," Warriors chief executive Mick
Watson said.

The club is measuring its reaction to the loss to Penrith and an
ordinary showing to scrape home over the Cowboys, one seeming to
follow the other with an enthusiasm problem.

Watson is lunching today with senior players, including Jones, Betham
and Awen Guttenbeil, to question them on morale, whether fatigue
after the Kiwi tour is a factor, or any other problems that may be
affecting performance.

"[Coach] Daniel Anderson and I have a lot of work to do on the
psychology front," he said.

Storm welcomes back strike power

Melbourne Storm has received a significant boost ahead of Saturday
night's clash with Newcastle following the return of dynamic halfback
Matt Orford and try-scoring centre Steven Bell.

After making speedy recoveries from knee injuries, both Orford and
Bell have been named in the Storm side that will tackle the Knights -
minus skipper Andrew Johns - at Olympic Park from 7.30 this Saturday
night.

"I've been working hard with the knee in rehab and even though
there's room for a little more improvement it certainly is right to
play on this week,"Orford said of the knee he injured in the round
five win over the Sharks almost three weeks ago.

"My confidence has certainly grown in recent weeks and I'm pretty
happy that Ill be able to do the things I want to do on the field
without being restricted.

"Halfback is a tough position to have people in and out all the time
and hopefully I can stay there for a while now and add some
stability."

Bell started the season in spectacular fashion picking up a round one
hat trick before suffering a cartilage tear at training during the
build-up to Melbournes round two win over the Panthers.

Orford believes the Storm can ill afford to underestimate a Newcastle
side that is missing his opposite number, citing the Knights
forwards as prime candidates to step up in Johns absence.

Wigan want Gasnier

WIGAN are poised to make a massive offer for St George Illawarra
centre Mark Gasnier - a bid described last night as "outrageous" by
the Dragons.

An English newspaper reported that Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay had
Gasnier on top of the wealthy Warriors' hitlist.

But the Dragons are working furiously to re-sign Gasnier before the
June 30 anti-tampering deadline.

"I can't imagine Mark would have any interest heading overseas at age
22," said Dragons chief executive Peter Doust.

"He has more to achieve in the game in Australia. We are working on
an agreement for Mark now. The bid is outrageous given that Mark will
be happy to agree to stay with the Dragons."

The newspaper report also claimed Wigan want Jason Ryles, but the big
prop has rejected an offer.

Matt Parsons to lead Knights

COURAGEOUS Newcastle prop Matt Parsons is set to delay back surgery
to lead a budget-priced, no-frills Knights side against Melbourne on
Saturday.

Decimated by injury and the suspension of captain Andrew Johns, the
Knights have been forced to name a crop of first-year rookies to take
on the Storm.

And the player crisis for the club could deepen tonight if prop Josh
Perry is found guilty of an eye-gouging allegation and is suspended.

Seven regular first graders - Ben Kennedy, Robbie O'Davis, Steve
Simpson, Adam MacDougall, Kurt Gidley, Adam Woolnough and Anthony
Quinn - are all sidelined through injury while Johns yesterday
entered a guilty plea on a head-slam offence and will miss the club's
next two games.

Parsons requires surgery after struggling with bulged discs in his
back for several weeks but with an operation set to rule him out for
up to three months, he has put it on hold in a bid to nurse the club
through its player crisis.

Incredibly, Newcastle have used six debutants in their first grade
squad already this season with winger Gavin Quinn set to become the
seventh against Melbourne.

Another player - hooker Luke Quigley - played just one first grade
game before the start of this season.

The player crisis has forced coach Michael Hagan to throw the likes
of Craig Hall, Andrew Price, Reegan Tanner, Todd Bates, Matthew
Kennedy and now Quinn - virtual no-names at the start of the season -
in at the deep end in the top grade.

Intruding Tweed Heads make big impression

Ben Dorries: QUEENSLAND Cup giant-killers Tweed Heads Seagulls aren't
ashamed to admit they may have underestimated their own ability
before a flying start to the first season in the statewide
competition.

The NSW-based intruders confess they would have been satisfied to
finish "middle of the field or possibly in the semis", but they have
ambushed some highly rated opposition to be surprise joint leaders
after six rounds.

Consecutive wins over premiers Redcliffe and heavyweights Wynnum have
given Tweed Heads new confidence and belief after it spent more than
two years battling to be admitted to the Queensland Cup.

The Seagulls' leap from the NSW Group 18 competition where they won
three of the past five premierships has been relatively pain-free
with the club's new affiliation with Parramatta giving young players
more hope of a breakthrough into the NRL.

Parramatta coach Brian Smith was due to fly up to cast his eye over
the Seagulls' talent in their 28-8 win over Wynnum at Piggabeen last
weekend but had to cancel to attend a christening.

Flying 20-year-old Seagulls winger Nathanael Barnes, a part-time
barman at Seagulls Leagues Club, said the side's success had been a
surprise but predicted rivals would treat them with more respect for
the remainder of the season.

"Players are a lot faster, bigger and stronger than in Group 18, and
there are no teams that you can take it easy against," Barnes said.

"If someone had said we would have been five from six they wouldn't
have been taken seriously.

"We've been playing very well, although they'll be no sneaking up on
other teams now they know what we can do."

Seagulls, the oldest provincial club in Australia formed in 1909,
were a controversial choice to be admitted to the competition ahead
of Brothers Valleys and their path into the Queensland Cup wasn't
easy.

Several Seagulls applications were refused, with some Queensland
clubs not happy to welcome the newcomers and the NSWCRL unwilling to
let their powerhouse Group 18 team defect to another state's
competition.

But wily coach Peter Crannage, a former Cronulla player, quickly
silenced the doubters by moulding his team into a premiership force.

Under Crannage, the Seagulls have lost only twice this year to
Ipswich in the Queensland Cup and to unbeaten NRL side Canberra in a
pre-season trial and they have used a squad almost entirely
comprised of local juniors.

BARLA in Russia


It will be an early start for the BARLA Great Britain tourists next
Monday morning as they set off for the Russian capital Moscow as they
depart about 8-15 am and which will mean an early morning call of
around 5am.

They depart from Manchester Airport bound for Frankfurt in Germany
were they will have a stop over of about an hour and a half before
boarding a flight to Moscow.

Final preparations were made at the back end of last week with the
visas coming through and the Powergen Challenge Cup Final at the
Millennium Stadium in Cardiff gave Great Britain Manager Neil Baxter
a chance to catch up with some other people involved in this
inaugural competition.

'Whilst at Cardiff I was able to meet up with delegates from both the
Russian and French Rugby League. We didn't have much chance to
discuss the tour in detail but as far as we know we will be staying
in one of the adjacent hotels to the Olympic Stadium in Moscow.

"At the moment all I know is that we will definitely play on the
Tuesday and the Friday but I do not have any idea as to kick-off
times and any other things that are planned for us but no doubt that
will all be made available to us in good time".

The squad captained by West Bowlings Nigel Halmshaw have been
training at Eccles for the past four Wednesdays and will meet up
again at the home of the National Conference side on Sunday afternoon
before making their way to the Brittania Airport Hotel for an
overnight stay prior to departure.

CUNNINGHAM SET FOR SAINTS COMEBACK

By Ian Laybourn: St Helens and Great Britain hooker Keiron Cunningham
has been given the clearance to make his comeback from a career-
threatening elbow injury.

The Welsh international has been out for almost six months after
undergoing major surgery after sustaining the injury in the first
Test against New Zealand last November.

However, Saints coach Ian Millward will not rush the world-rated
hooker back into action and insists he must force his way past
understudy Mickey Higham.

"He's got the OK from the specialist but we need to get his fitness
up," said Millward. "He's been alright to run and he can now have
full-on contact.

"We'll get him more physically and mentally ready and play him in a
week or two. We'll have a good week with contact and see how he goes,
maybe play in the Under-21s next week.

"You've got to remember Mickey has been playing very well and
Keiron's first job is to get into the 17. Then he's got to displace
Mickey. There's going to be good competition there."

St Helens still have a doubt over winger Darren Albert for Friday's
visit to Halifax. He missed last week's 56-6 win over Warrington with
a leg injury.

"Basher" Baynes returns for Reds

TOP prop Neil "Basher" Baynes will return to beef up the Salford pack
for Sunday's tough clash with Featherstone Rovers.

The big man sustained an ankle injury in the win over Batley and the
Reds are not taking any chances on his fitness ahead of this
weekend's clash.

Baynes has undergone daily treatment and should start. And football
director Steve Simms expects coach Karl Harrison to select from a
fully-fit squad.

Simms told M.E.N Sport: "Everyone should be fine. We certainly
welcomed a weekend off because it helped us recover from a few
niggling injuries."

Salford head for Featherstone expecting few favours. Simms is a
former Rovers coach and knows from first-hand experience just how
intimidating the Post Office Road ground can be.

He said: "It's right in the middle of a very closely-knit community -
Featherstone are always a tough team to play.

"It's a small town and the community always offer good support. They
don't like seeing their team lose.

"When you try to win there they view it as if you intend stealing
from their own homes!

Tough test

"We are expecting another tough test, similar to the one we faced at
Whitehaven in our opening game.

"We are certainly not underestimating Rovers. They've some very good
players and will no doubt raise their game."

As revealed in M.E.N Sport, coach Harrison sent an edited tape of the
Whitehaven game to referees' controller Stuart Cummings.

This highlighted some strong tackles on play-maker Gavin Clinch,
which Reds bosses took exception to.

During the close season, Simms called for any cases of foul play to
be duly punished.

New name at Kogarah

WHEN the Dragons return to their famous old home ground in the Sydney
suburb of Kogarah on Sunday it will have a new name.

A communications company has bought the naming rights for the next
five years from the local council.

The arena will be known as Oki Jubilee Oval.

The Dragons make their return to the Kogarah venue for the first time
in four years for the local derbyagainst Cronulla. Work on $2
million worth of renovations continues. But although it will all not
be completed by Sunday, the Dragons are still expecting a full house
of around 17,000 fans.

Sampson "no" to Wildcats

DEAN Sampson has reportedly ruled out a move to Wakefield Trinity
Wildcats.

Sampson had been linked with the Wildcats, whose coach Shane McNally
confirmed that he had spoken to the ex-Castleford prop in Monday's
Rugby Leaguer & League Express.

But the 35-year-old has today ruled out a comeback, choosing instead
to focus on his development work with the Tigers.

"I was very flattered by their interest, but I just feel that at this
time I could not give them 100 per cent of what I would like to,"
Sampson told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"I am very flattered they feel I could still cut it in Super League
and still do a job for them.

"I am sure I could, but I feel I am making great strides in what I am
doing at Castleford and I am certainly enjoying what I am doing.

"I don't feel giving that up and going back to playing would be right
for me at this moment in time."

COACHES BACK KNEEING CLAMPDOWN

By Ian Laybourn: Two prominent Super League coaches have welcomed the
Rugby League's clampdown on players lifting their knees in the tackle.

Bradford's Great Britain prop forward Stuart Fielden was last week
banned for two matches for the offence while team-mate Richard Moore
received a warning.

Neil Kelly (Widnes), the reigning Tetley's Super League coach of the
year, backed the initiative, claiming two of his players received
chest injuries while playing against Bradford this season, while Ian
Millward (St Helens) believes the League have not gone far enough.

"It's been creeping into the game and so I'm pleased to see the
officials picking up on it," said Kelly. "One of our Under-21s broke
his collar bone from a player lifting his knees in the tackle."

Fielden had received three warnings for what the League
termed "ungentlemanly conduct" and was handed his suspension
following an incident in a match on Good Friday which left Hull
skipper Jason Smith with a dislocated shoulder.

The ban would have forced Fielden to miss last Saturday's Powergen
Challenge Cup final had he not already been ruled out with a knee
injury sustained in the same incident.

Bradford coach Brian Noble last week accused the League of carrying
out a witchhunt against his star forward but Millward says officials
should come down harder on persistent offenders.

Graham solves Warriors' injury crisis

Australian forward Nick Graham will make his Wigan debut against
Bradford on Friday.

Graham, dropped by Cronulla after the Sharks' disastrous start to the
season, has joined the Warriors to the end of the year in a response
to their injury crisis.

"We needed some more troops and he's doing us a favour," said Wigan
coach Stuart Raper.

"I don't want to talk him up because he needs to settle in but he's a
solid player who will certainly give 100 per cent.

"He's fully fit and fairly adaptable. He can play stand-off, loose
forward and back row but he will probably start off on the bench."

Wigan are still without seven regulars, including Andy Farrell, but
are poised to welcome back Kris Radlinski, Jamie Ainscough and Gareth
Hock.

Farrell has been given the all-clear to start running and could be
back playing in a fortnight.

Johns pleads guilty, out two weeks

Newcastle captain Andrew Johns has pleaded guilty to a head slam
charge and will miss two National Rugby League matches.

Johns elected to enter an early guilty plea rather than risk a three-
week suspension by challenging the charge at the judiciary on
Wednesday night.

He will miss the Knights' games against Melbourne and South Sydney,
but will be back in time for the City-Country Origin game and
Newcastle's round ten match against the Sydney Roosters.

New Zealand Warriors captain Monty Betham, South Sydney fullback
Chris Walker and Bulldogs hooker Adam Perry also entered early guilty
pleas on Tuesday.

Betham will miss two matches on a grade two careless high tackle
charge while Walker and Perry will not accrue enough points to be
suspended on striking and grade one careless high tackle charges
respectively.

However, the judiciary will be busy, with four players to appear.

Newcastle prop Josh Perry will appear on a contrary conduct charge
after Wests centre Terry Hill claimed he was eye gouged by the young
forward on Saturday night.

Hill will give evidence in that hearing and then be required to
appear to answer a dangerous throw charge following his tackle on
Mark Hughes in the same match.

St George Illawarra winger Amos Roberts will also answer a dangerous
throw charge while Bulldogs prop Mark O'Meley, injured with a broken
hand, will appear on a striking charge.

Buderus new Knights halfback

Test hooker Danny Buderus will play halfback in a barely recognisable
Newcastle side for Saturday night's National Rugby League game
against the Melbourne Storm.

Coach Michael Hagan was forced to name an 18-man squad minus the
services of captain Andrew Johns (suspended) and a host of injured
players.

Ben Kennedy (sternum), Steve Simpson (groin), Kurt Gidley (ankle),
Anthony Quinn (cheek), Robbie O'Davis (face), Adam Woolnough (neck)
and Adam MacDougall (knee) are all unavailable through injury.

O'Davis will miss up to six weeks of football after undergoing
surgery for serious facial injuries while Woolnough aggravated a neck
injury and took no part in the second half of the win over the Tigers.

He will miss at least one week.

Johns has pleaded guilty to a contrary conduct charge resulting from
his head slam on Wests centre Mark O'Halloran and was outed for two
weeks.

Buderus played his junior football as a halfback and said he was
looking forward to the new role.

Luke Quigley will shift into the hooking spot.

"I haven't played in the number seven jersey for a few years now, but
I'm hoping that it will be something I'll pick up fairly quickly,"
Buderus said.

"Since Kurt Gidley was injured, I've been doing some training at half
to cover for Joey (Johns) in case something like this happened, so
I'm reasonably well prepared.

"I think that this team performs best when under pressure, so I'm
really looking forward to Saturday's game.

"We trained well this morning and I'm confident we can put together
our fifth win on the trot this weekend.

"Given the way our younger blokes have been performing this year,
I've got the utmost confidence in their ability to get the job done
again on Saturday."

Hagan has been forced to make major changes to his backline, with
former NSW fullback Mark Hughes filling in for O'Davis.

Rookie winger Craig Hall, who has crossed for six tries in his five-
game NRL career, will take his place in the centres while Gavin Quinn
becomes the seventh debutante for the club this season after being
named on the wing.

Bulldogs fined $10,000

The National Rugby League has fined the Bulldogs club $10,000
following comments made by the clubs Chief Executive to the match
referee on Saturday night.

NRL Guidelines state that: Under no circumstances are match
officials to be approached, questioned, or harassed in any way by
Club officials either during, or after a match.

Written reports from Canberra Stadium on Saturday night state that
the referee was approached following the game and that certain
comments were made to him by the club Chief Executive.

"Refereeing is a difficult job and those who perform that job do not
deserve to find themselves being confronted by emotional officials
after a game," NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.

"There are channels through which issues can be raised properly but
post match outbursts are not acceptable.

"The rules are clear and the NRL will not hesitate to ensure that
referees are treated with respect during and after the game."

The NRL has also received submissions from the Cronulla club
regarding the breach notice issued last week for having fielded an
unregistered player.

After examining the submissions, which show that the player had
received a clearance but that the club had made an honest mistake in
misinterpreting the rules, the fine amount has been altered.

The fine of $10,000 will stand with $5,000 of the amount suspended on
the basis that no similar breaches are committed in the next 12
months.
