NRL Club News fron SMH

Bulldogs lock Travis Norton has a knee injury and will miss tonight's
round five opener against Newcastle.

Norton, due to play his 100th first-grade game, has failed a fitness
test. Former NSW forward Andrew Ryan moves into the starting pack and
Steve Reardon, himself only recently back from injury, comes onto the
bench.

Dogs officials revealed international five-eighth Braith Anasta had
been eager to play at EnergyAustralia Stadium tonight.

"We got some medical advice that it may not be a good idea," said
team spokesman Brad Clyde. "We'll see how he is next week."

With second-rower Steve Simpson undergoing groin surgery, Matt Jobson
returns to the Newcastle starting side moving up from a five-man
bench.

Lincoln Withers suffered a hip injury in last week's win over Manly
and is Wests Tigers' only doubtful starter against South Sydney
tomorrow night. "It was an impact injury... he's iced it and taken
anti-inflammatories," said football manager Steve Lavers.

Western Suburbs youngster Adam Tippett is in line to make his debut
if Withers is out.

South Sydney captain Bryan Fletcher trained strongly yesterday and
was confirmed to make his comeback from a lower back problem and
suspension at Aussie Stadium.

Cronulla officials are confident fullback David Peachey (hamstring)
will play against Melbourne tomorrow night.

"He was fine at training today - we wouldn't be taking him if he
wasn't going to play," said Sharks coaching co-ordinator Greg Pierce.

Youngster Ryan Hoffman will not be needed after being named on a five-
man Melbourne bench for the Olympic Park game.

After being a late withdrawal for the past two weeks due to an ankle
injury, winger Ty Williams is expected to play for North Queensland
against the Roosters at Dairy Farmers Stadium tomorrow night.

Sydney Roosters fly out this evening; they anticipate no changes.
Western Suburbs signing Stuart Webb will be their travelling
emergency after injuring himself in the pre-season.

Besieged Manly have injury worries over interchange players Solomon
Haumono (hamstring) and Ben Walker (knee).

With second-rower Mark Shipway suspended on Wednesday night, Luke
Williamson replaces him in the starting side.

"Solo has passed stage one - the physiotherapist and the doctor
giving him a clearance," said football manager Peter Peters.

"He's training today and we're going to see how he pulls up tomorrow.
Benny Walker is having some tests on his knee." Former rugby union
player Sam Harris is on stand-by.

Coach Nathan Brown is yet to finalise the St George Illawarra bench
for Sunday's WIN Stadium encounter with the Sea Eagles.

But Shaun Timmins will definitely be playing, meaning two of the
remaining five interchange players will be omitted.

Skipper Simon Woolford (corked thigh) has given Canberra a boost by
being cleared to play against Parramatta on Sunday.

"He hasn't been able to train fully until today but he got through
the session without a problem," said coach Matthew Elliott, yet to
finalise his bench.

Parramatta officials say fullback Brett Hodgson (ankle) will
definitely play after being a late withdrawal for the past two weeks.
Andrew Meads is tipped to be omitted from the bench.

Second-rower Brad Meyers (neck) and five-eighth Ben Ikin (shoulder)
are in doubt for Brisbane's ANZ Stadium encounter with the Warriors
on Sunday.

Meyers was unable to train yesterday while Ikin was not involved in
any physical contact.

The Warriors will check the fitness of centre John Carlaw (hip
flexor) this morning.

Travis Norton ruled out

The Bulldogs suffered a setback tonight when lock Travis Norton was
ruled out of Friday night's blockbuster against Newcastle at
EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Norton failed a fitness test on his knee.

Andrew Ryan will make his first start for the `Dogs while Steve
Reardon has been included on the bench.

The Knights will be without forward Steve Simpson, who underwent
groin surgery on Wednesday, with Matthew Jobson expected to come into
the starting side.

Globetrotting Bronco returns

By PETER JESSUP: Tonie Carroll had three aims when he left the Leeds
Rhinos to return to the Brisbane Broncos - to re-join the most
professional club and competition in world league, to return to the
game's best coach, and to force his way into the Queensland team.

Carroll hopes to make this year's State of Origin side after playing
for the Maroons from 1998-2000, but then being ignored for two years.

If he does, he will be ineligible for the Kiwis, for whom he has
played five tests, and his availability for Australia would be an
unknown.

"It feels like I never left," the 27-year-old said this week after
his fourth game back at the Broncos.

A lot has changed while he was in England - Alfie Langer and Andrew
Gee have retired, wingers Wendell Sailor and Lote Tuqiri have
defected to union, and Chris Walker, brother Shane and Ashley
Harrison have departed to Souths.

"There are still plenty of guys I know. The younger ones have stepped
up to fill the boots of the veterans."

The backline moves and cohesion had not been altered too much because
both halves, Shaun Berrigan and Ben Ikin, learned their trade under
Langer, Carroll said.

"They're out of the same mould, they learned his tricks and they pull
them out."

TV snub irks Raiders

CANBERRA Raiders have lodged a formal complaint with the NRL after
being snubbed again by the game's free-to-air broadcaster Channel 9.

The Raiders did not appear once on Nine during last year's regular
season - a key factor in the club losing its $1million major sponsor
Ozemail.

That trend has continued this season, with Canberra - surprise
competition leaders after four rounds - disappointed they haven't
been allocated a free-to-air game at least until round nine.

The crux of Canberra's frustration revolves around Nine's decision to
telecast a round seven match between Manly and Souths at Brookvale on
Sunday, April 27 - despite both sides having yet to win a match this
season.

On the same weekend, the red-hot Raiders play the Bulldogs at
Canberra Stadium - yet this will be played on Saturday night and
covered by Fox Sports.

Raiders chief executive Simon Hawkins confirmed to The Daily
Telegraph last night that a letter had been sent to NRL chief
operating officer Graham Annesley.

Annesley said he had forwarded the letter to Channel 9.

"It is disappointing," Hawkins said. "You have to ask the
question, 'What do we have to do?'

Harris poised to shore up Manly

By Adam Daff: FORMER NSW Waratahs centre Sam Harris is almost certain
to be given a chance to capitalise on the disastrous situation at
Manly.

Harris is on standby for Solomon Haumono, who will be given until
tonight to prove his fitness and take his place in a team decimated
by injury and suspension.

If Haumono fails to recover from a hamstring strain, Harris will
start from the bench.

"He's (Haumono) come on a lot better than he was last week. We don't
want him doing too much with his hamstring because we need him to get
through the sessions," Manly football manager Peter Peters said.

The attrition in Manly's first grade side has opened the door for
Harris much earlier than expected.

He is one of the fittest players in the first-grade squad but, after
making the switch to league, has only played in a handful of premier
league (first division) games.

Harris was a 103kg, 191cm utility back when he played for the
Waratahs but coach Peter Sharp has moulded him into a ball-playing
backrower.

There is speculation that five-eighth Ben Walker, who has been named
on the bench, could also be in danger of missing the match with an
inflamed knee.

Walker's knee injury is chronic and needs an operation but the 27-
year-old has committed to playing out the year.

The Sea Eagles are desperate to secure their first win of the year
and atone for a bad loss to the Wests Tigers last Sunday at Brookvale.

The club yesterday posted an open letter to fans pleading for
patience, saying they were not about to "implode or make any rash
decisions".

Praise catches Cowboy by surprise

Steve Ricketts: LEIGH McWilliams played his first "senior football"
in a competition named after one of the greats of Queensland rugby
league, Mal Meninga, but that experience did not qualify him for the
Maroons State of Origin side.

McWilliams, the North Queensland Cowboys hooker rated by Queensland
and Broncos skipper Gorden Tallis as up to Origin standard, is a
product of Hunter Valley rugby league in NSW and he was 19 when he
moved to Townsville.

Tallis' unsolicited comment about McWilliams before last Saturday
night's Broncos-Cowboys match in Townsville caught many people by
surprise, especially McWilliams.

He started the season with North Queensland Young Guns in the state
league and was promoted at the expense of Paul Dezolt after the
Cowboys' first round 46-14 loss to Canberra.

In the next two matches he was close to the Cowboys' best, catching
the eye of Tallis, who loves his football on TV.

"I didn't know what to think when my mates told me what Gordie had
said," McWilliams said yesterday.

SAINTS FACE TOUGH TEST

By Ian Millward: LEEDS v ST HELENS:

Preparations have gone really well for our Powergen Challenge Cup
semi-final clash with Leeds.

It's been a week where we have had a couple of people very sore after
last Saturday's game with the Rhinos which was a very tough one.

They played better than us and did very well at Knowsley Road but
this is a different game, a semi-final, and it has been a very
special week.

It would be strange to be facing the same side so soon in such a big
game but we did it last year!

It is something you get used to, who comes out of the hat you play,
and it is an exciting competition.

It is so exciting to be involved in the Challenge Cup, it's number
one with a history stretching back over 100 years.

We're just excited to be in the last four and with the chance of
going through to the Millennium Stadium.

Last week Leeds scored four tries against us, which is quite a few to
concede.

They are a side who are in form, full of confidence and have got
plenty of things right in the off season with regards to recruitment,
retentiion and also dispersal.

These are exciting times for people at Leeds but we hope to become
the first team to beat them this year.

HARRISON: "WE WON'T BE GIANTS"

By Ian Laybourn: Salford coach Karl Harrison on Thursday dismissed
the chances of his team emulating Huddersfield by going through the
season undefeated.

The Reds are modelling themselves on Huddersfield, who won 26 and
drew one of their 27 league matches to ensure an immediate return to
Super League.

Like the Giants, Salford have kept a full-time squad of players and
they go into Sunday's final group match of the Arriva Trains Cup with
an unbeaten record.

But Harrison is not expecting that record to last following the
decision to split last year's Northern Ford Premiership into National
Leagues One and Two.

"It will be tight," said Harrison at today's launch at the
Willows. "There are a lot of quality teams in there.

"Huddersfield played some of the weaker teams last year. To go
through the season unbeaten will be nigh-on impossible."

The Reds kick off their campaign on Good Friday with a trip to
Whitehaven, where Huddersfield dropped their only point, and Harrison
expects the Cumbrians to be among their promotion rivals.

Swinton sign Batley's Hough

Swinton have completed the signing of Chris Hough after agreeing a
£1,000 fee with Batley.

The Bulldogs utility back has been on loan at Swinton since the
beginning of the season but was called back to Batley last week as
cover for injuries to Dave Gibbons and Barry Eaton.

He played in the Bulldogs' win over London Skolars at the weekend.

Meanwhile Keighley second rower Mick Durham has also joined Swinton

Gary Charlton in charge at Workington

Workington's Gary Charlton has been put in temporary charge of the
National League Two club following the sudden resignation of head
coach Paul Penrice.

Charlton, son of former Salford and Great Britain full-back Paul
Charlton, is to take training and look after the team during Sunday's
final Arriva Trains Cup match against Chorley.

Penrice quit in the wake of Sunday's 42-12 defeat at Gateshead,
citing difficulties over his relationship with the club's board of
directors.

Workington football director, Dave Smith, said: "We will be holding a
board meeting next week with a view to advertising the job."

RLCM COACH EXTRACT - Steve Folkes - Bulldogs Head Coach

Canterbury coach Steven Folkes has compiled a
rugby league resume most could only fantasize
about. Grand final winner, New South Wales State
of Origin player, Kangaroo.

As a member of the revered, uncompromising Bulldogs pack of the
80’s
Folkes developed a reputation as one of the game’s
most disciplined players. Tough and hard.

Aggressive, but not dirty. Since assuming the
Canterbury coaching ranks he has devoted his time
to ensuring the current pack of Bulldogs are
similarly valued. Folkes considers discipline a
priceless commodity.

“I believe discipline comes in many forms and
hopefully as coach I am instilling in my players the
need to be self-disciplined. I think a lot about this
before I decide if the player should come to our club
in the first place.

"When we are looking at a young guy we go into his upbringing fairly
extensively because we figure we can learn a fair bit about how
he is situated in terms of things like discipline from
the way he was brought up. There is no doubt in my
mind that a team’s fortune can change once they (the
players) are individually prepared to alter their attitude.
Take this year (2001) for example.

"Last year we finished well down the ladder, out of the eight and
this season we’ve come second in the minor
premiership. I put the turnaround primarily down to
the player’s attitudes.

We didn’t like where we finished last year, we weren’t used
to
failing and we decided to takeanother look at ourselves to try to
make some positive changes. We got more disciplined, changed
our attitudes and changed our standing on the ladder
this year”.

Folkes is something of a football rarity in these
sometimes-selfish days of professionalism. He’s one
hundred percent Bulldog, always has been. Folkes
has just chalked up season number 25 with the
Canterbury club as either player or as a member

Desire, attitude and discipline are words employed
repeatedly from the Folkes coaching command. He
had these assets as a player, and now he’s looking
to find it in his chargers as the educator. Teaching
such skills falls into the relatively unknown subject
matter called man management.

The ability to bring together an eclectic group of athletes and
transform them into a well-drilled, highly motivated team unit is
never easy. But, as Folkes says, it’s part of the job.

“I think it’s more a matter of them blending personality
wise with the other players in the team. I think it’s
important you don’t have too many egos in the team
and I think we really haven’t had too many problems
along those lines while I’ve been coaching here and
even further back probably.

"Man management is probably the single greatest asset a coach can
have. It is, to me, learning how to get the best out of an
individual. They are all so different and so unique.

"One player needs a bit of a cuddle and a pat on the
back and some encouragement that way, while another
bloke needs a swift boot right up the behind.

"It is finding out the balance and trying to work out every
individual but there are some I haven’t worked out of
course. Trying to work out every individual and what
excites and motivates them is one of the real challenges
of my job I think”.
