RLCM COMMENT
Business as usual for top level teams
By Gary Roberts
After four weeks the NRL competition has panned out very quickly
showing that the big five will be the Roosters, Broncos, Bulldogs,
Knights and the Warriors.
They all are going to set course on being in the top section of the
competition for the entire year.
The Roosters and the Bulldogs look the best at this stage. The
Broncos appear to still be making too many errors, but they are
winning games. Remember they are the Broncos as Souths learned, they
are never beaten. State of Origin is their bogey each year, the
players never got back to their best last year after the three game
series.
Newcastle have a winning culture and the Warriors have the correct
attitude. Both teams have the players and the coaching staff to
assure their places in the in top third of the competition.
The balance of the clubs will have to scamper for the remaining three
positions and as usual the last few positions will only unravel in
the last round.
Canberra at present lead the competition with wins over Cowboys,
Tigers, Dragons and Penrith all teams that haven't threaten at the
business end of the competition for several years. Hopefully for
enthusiastic coach Matt Elliott they will continue on their winning
way. Their effort to come from behind and win against Penrith was
courageous, but they will not get that luxury when they play the
better teams. But their good start and with the confidence it has
brought to the team should carry them through to be permanently in
the top eight during the season.
Parramatta have started the season poorly and may struggle in the
bottom part of the ladder until round 10 by that time they may be too
far off the pace.
Cronulla, after watching their first three games have problems and
coach Anderson may not be able to fix them in the short term. One of
Chris Anderson's great coaching skills is to teach a team the
importance of patience in the game, this team has no patience and it
will take time to instill.
Rabbitohs after showing some early promise with close games against
the Bulldogs and the Broncos have capitulated and will finish in the
bottom half of the ladder, it is unfortunate but injuries and
suspensions and possible further internal strife will hold them back.
Storm appear that they can play football and do show some good
patches during games, but it is hard to see them mixing it with the
big boys. They have played the Sharks, Panthers and Knights with
their two wins coming from the weaker sides.
Penrith need a physiologist to understand their team culture, they
defeat the Roosters one week, then lead easy in their next game and
get run down, no one could work that out. There is a problem with
Penrith and it is hard to see them causing anymore shock wins to the
other top teams.
Cowboys are again showing promise in the early rounds, but they are
very leaky and good teams will easily score against them. Their two
wins to date have been against Manly and Souths.
Dragons hopefully will give new coach Nathan Brown an easier ride
than what Andrew Farrar had to experience in 2002, but after
watching their first couple of games this year they may again live up
to their tag as a team of 'under achievers' again in 2003.
West - Tigers will again upset some teams during the year, but it is
hard see them defeating any of the top teams. They are young, keen,
enthusiastic and are more disciplined in their efforts but they
cannot match it for 80 minutes with the big guys.
Manly supporters are going to have a long and possibly one of their
worst winters for several years.

Grand Final Day.
The team gathers in the locker room. This is an intense,
high pressure environment that few experience and
even fewer survive. A former player one of the
nations greatest - walks into the changeroom. There
is a respectful hush as he starts to speak.
He talks about pride.
He talks about spirit.
He talks about commitment about attitude.
He talks about winning the history of the club in Grand Finals.
With tears in his eyes he begins to recite the names of the great
players who have gone before.
He asks players to stand and link arms and to join him in the Club
song.
He has done a great MOTIVATIONAL TALK.
This is the perception many people have about the
word motivation as it applies to high performance
sport: a one off emotion charged lecture from a
professional speaker or motivator or sports
psychologist.
Effective motivation is not a one off talk by a high
powered speaker. It is not the promise of a present or
gift or bag of money. It is not a single temporary burst
of emotion.
Effective Motivation is a lifestyle. Motivated people
live a lifestyle where they are motivated to achieve
excellence in everything they do. Every task, every
activity, every challenge is an opportunity to set a goal,
to try something new and to achieve.
Try this simple exercise.
Have several players sit together before their next
training session. Ask them to perform a simple task
making a paper plane. Demonstrate how you would
like them to make the plane.
Now give them three minutes to perform the task and
observe the players performing their task.
Some players will fold the paper so that it looks
roughly like the demonstration version.
Others will fold and bend the paper so that it is
identical in most ways to the demonstration version
but with small variations in the shape and size of the
folds here and there.
Perhaps one player will ensure that every fold is even
and smooth. They will make certain that the left and
right sides of the plane are balanced and symmetrical.
They may even put in a couple of extra folds on the
wing to try and make a more advanced design.
And thats the attitude coaches and players should aim
to foster the attitude to do every task regardless of
its nature - to the best of their own ability.
Where the other players have asked of themselves
Can I do this or How can I do this, one player has
asked How can I do this well and maybe even do it
better than expected. The player has challenged
himself and been motivated to complete a relatively
simple task to the best of his ability.
Consider the above example in terms of a training activity. The coach
asks the team to perform................read more

What the hell is wrong with the Sharks?
By Brad Walter: After four premiership rounds their only two
competition points are from a bye.
Last season began the same way, but then the players were adapting to
Anderson's style of play. "We've got a team in now that probably
should be doing pretty good," he said. "They should be doing a lot
better than they are.
"We'd be struggling to beat anyone at the moment. We're just not
playing with any confidence. We're not going out there as a team and
we're not playing as a team.
"We're just leaking points - we're averaging over 30 points against
us per game. When your focus isn't right, defence is going to hurt
you because you're not working together."
According to Anderson, it all began in the opening-round game against
Melbourne when the Sharks led 22-0 but finished 36-32 losers.
The bye the following week was followed by a 30-4 loss to Brisbane
last Sunday, but the Sharks coach thought everything would be all
right yesterday.
"We weren't any better today than we were last week. We were never in
the game," he said.
"We'd have three in a tackle, we'd fall off and they'd get rid of the
ball. [But] it's not the football, we're just not focused. We haven't
got a focus on the game."

Stuart's skill means Wing gives Sharks no prayer
By Phil Gould: I learned as a coach a long time ago that it is not
how much I want to win that counts. It's how much my players want to
win.
A coach can be as motivated as 10 men but it will always come down to
how motivated and how well prepared the players are that determines
your fate for the day.
My advice to all young coaches as they take on this most unforgiving
career choice is that, as a coach, you have to show your players that
you are working for them and not that they are working for you.
You have to show them that your primary concern is their career, and
their success, rather than being in the game totally for yourself.
Decisions you make on how a team should play, who should play in the
team and what positions each player should play should, wherever
possible, be made with the players' best interests in mind.
Roosters coach Ricky Stuart is extremely talented. He works long
hours and he works very hard. He has talented players and he has
talented staff around him.
The key to Ricky is that he works for these people and they know it.
That's why they work hard too and they trust him when he decides upon
a course of action for the team, because everyone knows he does these
things with the best interests of the team and the individual players
in mind.
Take Craig Wing for example. The development of this player over the
past 18 months is nothing short of amazing. Stuart developed him as a
halfback last year and Wing steered the Roosters to premiership
success. All along, however, Stuart was grooming him to become the
best dummy-half in the game.
I don't call them hookers any more. It is a bit of an insult to
compare today's good looking lads with their hard-nosed, bent-nosed
predecessors.

Invites to Origin surprise party
By Dean Ritchie: CANBERRA prop Ryan O'Hara is poised to be drafted in
to a 30-man preliminary NSW State of Origin squad to be named today.
O'Hara, Manly's Jason King and Penrith's Luke Lewis, are considered
the surprise selections in the Blues squad.
The NSW squad will be culled back in coming weeks before the first
State of Origin match against Queensland in Brisbane on June 11.
O'Hara has been an impressive performer in the Raiders' unbeaten run
this season.
King is a local Manly junior with club officials predicting he will
represent Australia within the next three years.
Lewis rose to prominence last year with the Panthers and some believe
he could be a long-term representative player.
It is understood that these three players might not necessarily avoid
the forthcoming cull but their selection is an indication that they
are most certainly future Origin players.
"Jason is a wonderful prospect and I just think he will get better
and better," said Manly coach Peter Sharp.
Cronulla halfback Brett Kimmorley is struggling to be included in the
squad as NSW No.2 halfback with the Bulldogs Brent Sherwin in favour.

Eagle star's worst day
By Dean Ritchie: STEVE Menzies - the heart and soul of Manly for the
past 10 years - hung his head yesterday before saying: "This is my
darkest day at Brookvale Oval."
Menzies was talking in a shellshocked Sea Eagles dressing room after
his inept side had been humbled 38-12 by the Wests Tigers.
Manly supporters, elated just months ago to have their club back in
the NRL, jeered and heckled their own players from the field at
halftime when behind 28-0.
"I can't remember a darker day here at Brookie -- if I have, I can't
remember too many worse," Menzies said.
"It's certainly among the lowest feelings I've had here."
After the match, the Manly players, as with tradition, clapped the
fans in appreciation for attending yesterday's match.
But it was an ironic moment considering for the previous 80 minutes
the fans had refused to clap the Manly players.
The Sea Eagles fumbled and mumbled, kicked out on the full and didn't
aim up in defence to sustain their six-try-to-two defeat.
Take nothing from the Wests Tigers but the mind does boggle at what
teams such as Canterbury, Newcastle or the Roosters would have done
to Manly based on yesterday's performance.
"They know what they've done and they know what they served up today
was sub-standard," said Manly coach Peter Sharp.

Battle for South Sydney intensifies
By Stuart Honeysett: THE collection of prestige four wheel drives
parked around the back streets of inner-city Redfern yesterday
portrayed the battle for rugby league's roots which was going on
inside the Ron Williams Activity Centre.
A peek behind the doors revealed the owners of these vehicles a
veritable who's who of Sydney's social scene. There were TV stars and
sportsmen. Even a former premier and a comedian.
It was day four of the battle for the South Sydney football club and
the nine-member group which had stood alongside Rabbitohs saviour
George Piggins during the club's exclusion from the NRL unveiled
their plans to bring about his downfall.
The news conference aimed at signalling a new Rabbitoh era was well-
timed. It began at 2pm, minutes after the full-time siren blew on
Souths' 38-16 loss to the Warriors at Ericsson Stadium in Auckland.
The Nine Network's Ray Martin talked about a club which languished at
the bottom of the table for the past 14 years. Andrew Denton chimed
in, declaring it was time to change all that. Mike Whitney went over
the top, saying he would have traded all of his Test cricket
appearances for Australia for just one first-grade game with Souths.
Nick Greiner's romantic side came out when he explained how he took
his wife on their first date to a Rabbitohs match. Mark Carroll gave
the tough times he had at Souths the credit for his rise to an
Australian Test jumper.
The pleas were heartfelt and aimed at the 950-plus voting members of
the football club who will have the final say this week. The election
results will be known at the annual general meeting on Sunday.
The bitter fight continues after a weekend during which the gloves
came off and things turned bloody.

Manly scared and a "disgraceful" performance says Manly CEO
Daniel Pace: THERE was plenty of screaming and yelling in the
dressingrooms at Brookvale Oval yesterday and it wasn't hard to pick
the winners from the losers.
In the Wests Tigers' room, former Sea Eagle Terry Hill was leading
the cheers after inspiring the "Fibros" to an emphatic 38-12 win over
the "Silvertails" Manly.
Across the players' tunnel, Manly chief executive Ian Thomson was
launching a tirade of abuse at his players, calling them scared and
slamming their "disgraceful" performance.
Hill, in his first match at Brookvale Oval since leaving Manly in
1999, scored a 58th-minute try which ended any hopes of a comeback
from his old club.
"I was a bit nervous before the game because I've got fond memories
of the place and people here have been good to me," he said.
Thomson's tirade heard by the media in the adjoining press conference
room included a reference to the Tigers as being "the worst team in
the competition" and that Manly players failed to act professionally.
It was thought that coach Peter Sharp hurled abuse at the players but
Thomson took the blame at the post-match press conference.
"We must be mentally tougher and better prepared mentally than that,"
said Thomson, who used the analogy of a jigsaw puzzle for rebuilding
a club that was missing far too many pieces.
"It's unacceptable to show commitment one week (in a narrow loss to
NZ Warriors) and then just not turn up the next week."
Sharp apologised to the fans for his team's effort after the Tigers
had the game wrapped up by halftime when they led 28-0 against a
Manly outfit which failed to complete its sets and looked lost in
attack.
The under-siege coach now has his work cut out as the Sea Eagles
search for their first win of the season on Sunday at Wollongong
against St George-Illawarra.

Pappas hopes for compromise
South Sydney lawyer Nick Pappas is still hopeful a compromise can be
reached with Rabbitohs chairman George Piggins ahead of this week's
football club elections.
But that hope appeared misplaced, with Piggins refusing to relent on
his demands that his existing board dominate any new line-up.
Piggins also threw another potential spanner in the works when he
said he would not work with Andrew Denton and Mike Whitney - two high-
profile members of the Pappas ticket and keen to be involved in the
club's future.
On another day of acrimony ahead of the Redfern rugby league club's
board elections on Friday:
- Pappas and his team unveiled their manifesto for the club's future;
- Pappas revealed he had a long conversation with Piggins' wife
Nolene on Saturday night;
- Pappas said he would be able to work with Piggins if he was
football club chairman and Piggins remained as leagues club
president;
- Piggins said his performance should not be judged on the team's
results after they lost against the NZ Warriors in Auckland on
Sunday - their fourth successive premiership defeat to open the
season and 11th in a row including last season;
- Denton apologised for his heated altercation with Piggins on Sydney
radio on Saturday and said he would be happy to shake hands with him
in future; and.
- television personality Ray Martin, another high-profile member of
the Pappas team, claimed Souths was the "laughing stock" of the
competition.
Even with all the bad blood between the camps, Pappas said he was
still "hopeful" of a compromise being reached between the warring
factions.

The Giants won the game 14-10 but match official Richard Silverwood
awarded a late try to Jamie Bloem.
"You've got to be careful what you say," said McNally. "But the last
try was from a forward pass.
"Whether our player touched it or not does not negate the forward
pass. They were allowed to get the four points on that.
"The other aspect of the game I'm not happy with is their work on the
ground when we were tackled.
"Jon Wells was looking to run the ball out of the in-goal area. He
was tackled on the ground, they picked him up and dragged him back
into the in-goal. That should have been a penalty.
"That went on all day. Blokes were stopped, effectively stopped but
they were picking them up and dragging them back. And I just can't
believe that was allowed to happen throughout the
match.''Huddersfield coach Tony Smith was disappointing with the
manner of his side's victory.
The Giants failed to match the standards set in their shock win over
St Helens, and Smith said: "It wasn't the best quality game. We were
not happy with our performance.
"Our goal is to keep on improving with each game. We failed on that
account but I must say that the first time around in Super League
that we probably would have lost that game and that's the difference
this year.''

Castleford Tigers 24 defeated London Broncos 12
Castleford moved into the top six of the Tetley's Super League after
beating London Broncos 24-12 at Griffin Park.
London were without 10 regulars and Cas took advantage after
recovering from a poor start.
London opened the scoring after only three minutes when Rob Purdham's
kick through was collected by Tony Martin.
The home side doubled their advantage after eight minutes when Andrew
King juggled Nigel Roy's pass before touching down.
Castleford got on the scoreboard after 19 minutes through Wayne
Bartrim's penalty. Then four minutes later, Lee Harland's drive set
up Danny Orr who threw out a long pass for half-back partner Mark
Lennon to touch down.
London's lead was finally erased on the half-hour mark when Bartrim
added his second penalty following an offside.
Three minutes later the Broncos were ahead again when Martin kicked a
penalty.
But Castleford ran away with the game in the second period. Paul
Mellor threw a pass out wide for Waine Pryce to convert in the corner
in the third minute.
London wasted a succession of chances to get back into the game and
their indiscipline cost them dear when Bartrim added two penalties in
60 seconds after 71 and 72 minutes.
Castleford finally wrapped up victory three minutes from time when
Orr sent Michael Eagar through a gaping gap in the home defence to
touch down and Bartrim added his sixth successful kick of the
afternoon.

Widnes Vikings 44 defeated Halifax 16
Widnes climbed of the foot of the Tetley's Super League with a 44-16
victory over Halifax.
The Vikings led only 14-6 at half-time but took charge after the
break and ran Halifax ragged.
Widnes went ahead after four minutes when winger Chris Giles took
Adam Hughes' pass to round Daryl Cardiss.
Then Dean Lawford's kick allowed Andy Hay to cross, before Lawford
added a third try midway through the first half to increase the lead
to 14-0.
Lawford missed three of his four goal attempts before Halifax grabbed
their first touchdown on the half hour with a smart pass from Martin
Moana to Cardiss, with Dane Dorahy landing the conversion.
Widnes introduced Julian O'Neill, their new signing from Wigan, just
before the interval.
Rival props Paul Davidson and O'Neill were sin-binned after trading
punches early in the second half.
Widnes added a fourth try through Lawford in the 43rd minute, with
O'Neill landing the first of five conversions, to increase the lead
to 20-6.
Halifax gave themselves a flicker of hope whenAnthony Seu Seu went
over for a try which was converted to reduce the arrears to 20-12 but
Widnes added four converted tries in the last quarter to stroll to
victory.
Frame crossed twice with further touchdowns from Hughes and Giles.
Dorahy notched a late consolation effort for out-classed Halifax.

Fremantle Roosters Into Pre-Season Cup Final.
The Fremantle Roosters Rugby League club will be trying to win it's
first pre-season cup final since 1984 this Saturday when it takes on
the South Perth Lions. The Roosters finished undefeated after
accounting for the Joondalup Giants 28 - 12 last Saturday.
Fremantle jumped the Giants early to lead 18 -nil but allowed the
Giants to score on the half time siren to go in 18 - 4.
The break must have taken the edge off the Roosters as they allowed
Joondalup to score two quick try's and make the score 18 - 12 but the
Roosters responded to post three more try's and run out comfortable
winners. Best for the Roosters was Rogers, Waikaro, Edmunds and
Bygraves.
The reserve grade played a trial against the Rockingham Raiders and
experimented with many positional changes and played seven under 18
players the score being Raiders 12 - Roosters 6.
Last Sunday also saw the Junior Roosters play trials with many new
players enjoying their first games of rugby league, the club fields
teams in under 8's 10's 12's 14's 16's and 18's all new players
welcome.
The venue for the Swan Brewery pre-season cup final is yet to be
decided so all supporters please contact the club to confirm on

"I want to go back, I'm a league player through and through." Nathan
Blacklock
"If I could go back to the Dragons tomorrow, I would. You can take
the boy out of league but you can't take the league out of the boy,"
he said.
It is an admission that will send shockwaves through Australian rugby
union, especially in a World Cup year. Blacklock's interest was
sparked when he met Dragons coach Nathan Brown for coffee at Cronulla
last week.
"Nathan said he'd love to have me back and, I can't lie, I want to go
back. I'm a Dragon through and through and I'm a league player
through and through.
"I know that's going to get me into a hell of a lot of trouble and
I'm going to have a hell of a year from now on in rugby, but I don't
care.
"As far as I'm concerned, it's not about money or anything like that,
it's all about being happy and what makes me happy is playing league
and feeling like I am wanted.
"To be honest, I probably wasted people's time coming across to
rugby. When I left league I was probably running from my problems.
Looking back, I should have stayed to sort them out.
"I thought trying something new would be good and it has been. I love
rugby, it's an awesome game. The crowds are great and the boys are
great. I don't care what they are going to think about me now,
because I know deep down I've had fun playing with them.
"But I also know deep down I'm a league player. If I came across to
rugby earlier in my life I'd love it even more, but I'm getting on
and feel I can still make a big contribution to the Dragons."

Roosters 40 defeated Sharks 20
The Sydney Roosters thumped an error-prone Cronulla 40-20 in their
National Rugby League grudge match at Toyota Park.
The Roosters bounced back from their shock loss to Penrith last
Sunday to post seven tries to four, including a hat-trick to winger
Todd Byrne.
The result leaves the Sharks winless after four rounds of the
premiership.
The victory was extra sweet for Roosters coach Ricky Stuart, who's
been embroiled in a war of words with Cronulla counterpart Chris
Anderson since before the start of the season.
Stuart took offence to Anderson's remarks that the Roosters' spoiling
tactics in defence was ruining the game as a spectacle.
The premiers had the game all but won at halftime after jumping out
to a 24-4 lead in the opening 40 minutes.
The writing was on the wall early for the Sharks, with Roosters
hooker Craig Wing scooting from dummy-half on the third tackle of the
match to set up a try in the opening minute to halfback Brett Finch.
The Sharks hit back with a four-pointer to five-eighth Greg Bird in
the sixth minute before fumbling their way through the rest of the
half.
Cronulla enjoyed ample possession inside the Roosters half, but
continually handed over the ball.
The Roosters punished the Sharks with converted tries to centre
Justin Hodges in the 17th minute, winger Todd Byrne (24th) and a
length-of-the-field breakout completed by speedy fullback Anthony
Minichiello.
Second rower Craig Fitzgibbon landed four goals from five attempts
before the interval to leave the home team trailing by 20 points and
facing an almost impossible task in the second half.
The task improved to impossible when prop Chris Beattie crossed in
the 47th minute after a long run from centre Paul Franze.
But the razzle dazzle Roosters put the issue far beyond Cronulla's
reach with quickfire three tries in 12 minutes, including a Byrne
double to bring up his hat-trick.
At 40-10, many home fans began heading for the turnstiles.
The Sharks saved some face late with a Franze four-pointer and a last-
minute penalty try to prop Jason Stevens when he was stripped of the
ball over the line in a gang tackle.

Tigers 38 defeated Manly 12
Manly have now lost two consecutive matches at their home ground and
face a daunting task on Sunday when they travel to Wollongong to take
on St George Illawarra.
To compound Manly's woes, referee Tim Mander placed forwards Mark
Shipway and Tony Jensen on report for a spear tackle on Tigers prop
Corey Pearson five minutes before fulltime.
The Tigers bounced back from last week's 38-6 hiding at the hands of
title favourites the Bulldogs while the Sea Eagles coughed up too
much ball and struggled to complete their sets of tackles today.
Centre Daniel Fitzhenry bagged two tries and fullback Joel Caine
kicked seven goals for the Tigers, who led 28-0 at halftime.
Fitzhenry's fellow centre Terry Hill, in his first match at Brookvale
Oval since leaving Manly in 1999, scored a 58th minute try which
ended any hopes of a comeback from his old club.
Anthony Watmough and captain Steve Menzies scored second half tries
for the woeful Sea Eagles.

NZ warriors 38 defeated Souths 16
Warriors pile on more misery for Souths
The New Zealand Warriors added to South Sydney's misery by beating
the National Rugby League cellar dwellers 38-16 at a wet Ericsson
Stadium.
The loss was the fourth in four rounds for Souths, a club also facing
big off-field problems with chairman George Piggins to be challenged
at board elections next weekend.
For the Warriors it was their third win in a row with five-eighth
Lance Hohaia and wingers Francis Meli and Henry Fa'afili each scoring
two of their side's eight tries.
Hohaia has now crossed the line six times this season.
Souths began promisingly and went ahead after eight minutes when they
took advantage of a turnover to move the ball wide and send winger
Nathan Merritt over for the first of his two touchdowns.
From there, the Warriors took control, putting on four tries over the
rest of the half without reaching top gear themselves.
Meli grabbed the first try after Souths' New Zealand prop, Frank
Puletua, lost the ball in the tackle close to his line.
Minutes later, Puletua coughed up the ball again in a defensive
position, and this time the mistake led to prop Jerry Seuseu forcing
his way over to score.
The Warriors went further ahead when Merritt failed to clean up a
Stacey Jones chip kick and Hohaia was on hand to force the loose ball
down.
Merritt figured again shortly after when he couldn't to hold an
intercept that might have seen him touching down 85m away. Instead,
from the ensuing scrum, Hohaia was put over.
Ahead 20-4 at the interval, the Warriors pulled further ahead two
minutes after the restart when yet another Souths error gave them
good field position and winger Henry Fa'afili crossed in the corner.
Fullback Motu Tony then scored a converted try to take the scoreline
out to 30-4, before visiting skipper Shane Walker finally crossed for
Souths.
A solo 50m run gave Meli his second touchdown, only for Merritt to
reduce the margin with his second try.
On the stroke of fulltime, Fa'afili went over in the corner to
complete the scoring.

Alarm bells ringing
By Phil Gould: I won't go to the extent of saying panic has set in,
but with less than eight weeks remaining until the naming of our NSW
side for State of Origin I, I am more than a little concerned about
the health, fitness and form of a number of our Origin hopefuls.
Tomorrow the NSW selectors will name our first 30-man training squad.
Actually, we are going to cheat and name 33 players. More about this
later.
When we met during the week to discuss the squad, the one thing that
struck home to me is just how many of the likely candidates are out
of action due to injury or have yet to hit anything like top form.
Origin this year could be one of the toughest assignments ever for a
NSW team. Queensland is abuzz with the impending reopening of Lang
Park, and with two games north of the border, the Blues will have to
be at their best - and then some - if they are to succeed in the
interstate battle.
Last year, NSW introduced a number of players to Origin football and
I believe the team, with all its newcomers, handled the task with
distinction.
I was anticipating our squad building even further on the ground we
made last year and really putting it to Queensland, even with two
games being played on their soil.
But the number of players who went around last year but are now on
the injured list is staggering. Jason Ryles, Shaun Timmins, Brett
Hodgson, Nathan Hindmarsh, Scott Hill, Braith Anasta, Ben Kennedy,
Trent Barrett and Timana Tahu are all on the sidelines and some are
not set to return for several weeks.
Add to the list players such as Adam MacDougall, who would also like
to stake a claim, and you can see that our preparation for the
representative season is anything but ideal.
On top of this, several players who people would consider selection
certainties are yet to hit their best form.
It's no good beating around the bush. I am concerned, and I will be
making my concerns known when the squad assembles tomorrow week at
Telstra Stadium when we launch our Origin campaign.

Winning margins narrow
The winning margin between teams is the narrowest in the six-year
history of the NRL.
Figures provided by NRL Stats show the average winning margin in 2003
is just 10.8 points significantly down from last year's average of
16.8.
In addition, 15 of the 21 Telstra Premiership games played before
this weekend were still up for grabs inside the final 10 minutes.
Among the thrillers were Penrith's one-point win over the Roosters
last weekend and the amazing last-gasp win by Brisbane over Souths a
fortnight ago.
Just two games have seen a side notch 40 points: Canberra's 46-14 win
over North Queensland in round one and Melbourne's 42-16 defeat of
Penrith in round two.
Over the same period in 2002 there were five games where a side
scored 40 or more points, including two half-centuries.
Despite running last, winless Souths have lost their three games by
margins of eight, two and seven points. Hardly hammerings.

Blacklock wants NRL return
IN a move that will send shockwaves through Australian rugby union,
league recruit Nathan Blacklock wants to quit the game and return to
the Dragons once the Super 12 season is finished.
Blacklock secretly met Dragons coach Nathan Brown in a Cronulla
coffee shop last week and told his former team-mate he wanted to
return to rugby league.
That led to Dragons chief executive Peter Doust organising a meeting
with NRL chief executive David Gallop and salary cap auditor Ian
Schubert last Thursday to discuss ways of getting the try-scoring
freak back to league.
The Dragons have only $6000 to move under the cap.
Last night Brown confirmed he met with Blacklock early last week, and
said he was keen to have him back at the Dragons.
"I had lunch with him the other day and he said he was enjoying rugby
union but one day he hoped to come back to rugby league," Brown said.
"I passed that message onto Peter Doust telling him that 'Tingha' was
keen to play league again. All I'll say is, if he is keen to play
rugby league again, we are a good chance of getting him back."

Salford hope to have Morley in 2005
AMBITIOUS Salford Reds want Great Britain star Adrian Morley to be
the club's prize asset when they move to a new stadium at Barton.
Reds football director Steve Simms today revealed bringing back local
lad Morley from Australia is a priority among the Reds long-term
goals.
Simms told M.E.N. Sport: "For starters we want to be in Super League
at Barton. Having Morley in our ranks would be ideal.
"We are genuinely interested in him.
"We plan to be at Barton for the start of the 2005 season.
"Moving gives us the opportunity to be as financially strong as the
big clubs.
"Morley is about to sign a new deal with the Sydney Roosters but is
set on one day returning to the UK. He has made it quite clear in the
past he would love to play for hometown team Salford.

Leeds Rhinos 24 defeated St Helens 16
A spectacular long-range try from St Helens old boy Wayne McDonald
condemned Super League champions St Helens to a second successive
defeat and gave Leeds a psychological advantage ahead of next
Saturday's Powergen Challenge Cup semi-final.
The 6ft 7in prop, released by Saints coach Ian Millward halfway
through a two-year contract in 2001, showed his old boss what he has
missed by romping 80 metres for a glorious match-winning try five
minutes from the end of a pulsating 24-16 encounter.
It began so promisingly for Saints, with second rower Darren Smith
using a three-man overlap to touch down after less than two minutes.
Sean Long's conversion made it 6-0 but Leeds' response was immediate
and decisive, with Francis Cummins palming the ball back from Andrew
Dunemann's high kick for Senior to force his way over for his first
try.

Singapore Sevens postponed due illness outbreak
The International Rugby League's Singapore Sevens tournament has been
postponed indefinitely due to the outbreak of mystery illness that
has killed more than 80 people worldwide.
Singapore's Health Ministry advised the organising committee not to

concerns over severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS.
Singapore has been one of the countries worst-hit by the disease,
with six deaths and 101 cases reported.
The organisers have given no indication of when the tournament might
be played.
Sixteen teams from four continents played in last year's Singapore

Inner battles rattle Rabbitohs
South Sydney has reportedly told up to ten players that they will
never again play first grade for the embattled National Rugby League
club.
The news, reported by radio station 2GB, comes on a day when
Rabbitohs chairman George Piggins and TV personality Andrew Denton,
part of a ticket challenging the current football board, traded
bitter words in public.
On radio station 2SM, Piggins accused Denton of supporting a merger
between Souths and Cronulla before the foundation club embarked on a
two-year court battle with News Limited for reinstatement to the NRL.
The pair exchanged angry words as Denton and his ticket, headed by
lawyer Nick Pappas, prepare to wrest control of the club from Piggins
at the football board elections Sunday week.
Meanwhile, the careers of at least four players at the Rabbitohs
looks to be over after they were told they were surplus requirements
to the first grade squad.
But hooker Jason Death, winger Joven Clarke, utility Andrew Hinson
and centre Russell Richardson won't be sacked because it will cost
the club too much money to pay out their contracts.
2GB reported that more players will be told they have no future at
the club under new coach Paul Langmack, who has been appointed to the
job for three years.
Souths have not won a match since July last year and face 2002 grand
finalist New Zealand Warriors at Ericsson Stadium on Sunday.

Canberra 40 defeated Penrith 28
Raiders continue grand start to season
Canberra remains the surprise unbeaten competition leader after
producing a spirited second-half fightback to shoot down Penrith 40-
28 in a National Rugby League thriller at Penrith Football Stadium.
The Raiders looked shot ducks when Penrith captain Craig Gower scored
two minutes after the interval to give the Panthers a 28-12 lead.
But two tries in three minutes, the first a delicate chip-kick and
regather from speedy winger Phil Graham, the second going to
replacement halfback Mark McLinden after a break from Brad Drew,
suddenly put the Raiders back in the contest.
The scores were locked at 28-all after hard-running second rower
Ruben Wiki broke through some flimsy Penrith defence to score and
fullback Clinton Schifcofske converted from wide out.
The Raiders completed their great comeback when Schifcofske,
McLinden - who was playing his first match of the year following off-
season toe surgery - and interchange forward Tyran Smith combined to
put lock Terry Martin over.
A late four-pointer to winger Jamaal Lolesi put the icing on the cake
for the Raiders.
The only downer for Canberra was the first-half reporting of former
New Zealand Test forward Wiki for a high tackle on Penrith prop Joel
Clinton.
Wiki looked like he might have a case to answer.
The Panthers had looked in control leading 22-12 at the break, thanks
largely to a tryscoring double from in-form fullback Rhys Wesser.
Wesser, the hat-trick hero in Penrith's shock win over the Sydney
Roosters last Sunday, has now tallied seven four-pointers already
this season.

Broncos 32 defeated Cowboys 24
Broncos protect unblemished record
Brisbane protected its unblemished record against state rival North
Queensland with a 32-24 National Rugby League victory at Townsville.
The Broncos have never lost a much-hyped Queensland derby to their
struggling northern cousins, although they have recorded two 20-all
draws.
A faint hope North Queensland could finally break the hoodoo in their
13th encounter attracted a near-capacity crowd to Dairy Farmers
Stadium.
The fans' expectations were buoyed by the unexpected return of
Cowboys captain Paul Bowman from an ankle injury and two wins in the
past two weeks.
The locals looked sharp at first, claiming the first points from a
penalty goal and adding six more when Glenn Morrison took advantage
of a Michael De Vere fumble.
But the steely Broncos quickly pulled themselves together and
bulldozed their way back into the match with tries to Tonin Carroll
and Brent Tate.
Rising star Brenton Bowen - cousin of fullback Matt Bowen - gave the
Cowboys six more points but two more tries to Brisbane cemented the
visitors' 22-14 lead.
A try to Leigh McWilliams after the break boosted the Cowboys'
scoreline and confidence but the Broncos' Corey Parker dampened their
spirits with his second try.
The locals kept trying, their efforts paying off when David Myles
took advantage of a Brisbane mistake to cross for a try on the siren.
But the end result proved north Queensland would be in Brisbane's
shadow for a while to come.
Prop John Buttigieg left the field with three minutes to go with a
shoulder injury.

Newcastle 44 defeated Melbourne 28
Rookie winger Craig Hall and the boot of skipper Andrew Johns
propelled Newcastle to a thrashing of Melbourne in tonight's NRL
clash at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
The Knights bounced back from two consecutive losses to smash the
injury-ravaged Storm in ruthless fashion, kicking away to a 44-0 lead
early in the second half before dropping their intensity.
Melbourne, who have never won in Newcastle, laid on the final five
tries, including four in the space of eight minutes, to give the
scoreline some respectability but in truth the game was over at
halftime when the Knights led 34-0.
Knights coach Michael Hagan will be delighted with the performance
considering the absence of key players such as Steve Simpson (hip
flexor), Ben Kennedy (wrist) and Adam MacDougall (knee).
He won't be so happy that utility Kurt Gidley missed the second half
because of a foot injury while fullback Robbie O'Davis was rested
late in the game after feeling a twinge in his hamstring.
Newcastle's last four tries came off the boot of Johns, who again led
the way for his side along with winger Timana Tahu, hooker Danny
Buderus and Hall, who made his first grade debut in last week's loss
to Parramatta.
The Knights jumped to a 34-0 lead following two tries each to Buderus
and Hall and early four-pointers to centre Matt Gidley and O'Davis.
Hall helped himself to a hat-trick - following tries in the 25th and
38th minutes - when he scored five minutes after the break from a
Johns grubber kick which O'Davis could easily have picked up.
The rout continued with a spectacular try to Tahu, who caught a cross-
field kick from Johns in the right corner only to be nabbed by the
defence.
He then passed to Matt Gidley who himself was pinned back by three
defenders but somehow popped a pass to Tahu, who ran around his
tackled team-mate to score the Knights' eighth try and give them a 44-
0 lead.
The Storm then went on a fruitless rampage, with tries to Bai,
Orford, Robbie Ross and a double to centre Aaron Moule in his return
to first grade from a long-term groin injury.
The good news for the Knights is that Kennedy will definitely play
against the Bulldogs on Friday night in Newcastle but Simpson is
doubtful and Gidley will not play after separating a bone in his
foot.
The Storm had problems down the left side of the field, where the
Knights continually broke through, and coach Craig Bellamy will be
praying playmaker Scott Hill returns next week from a shoulder
injury.
"It was very disappointing, especially our first half. Parsons and
(Josh) Perry kept rolling forward and we found it hard to stop those
guys.
"When you've got Johns and Buderus, the best two players in the
world ... we found it hard to compete."

Smith denies Parramatta crisis
If the National Rugby League season started 18 games ago, Parramatta
would be third-last.
Only beleaguered South Sydney, who haven't won since last July, and
the maligned Wests Tigers would be below the Eels on the ladder.
Yet coach Brian Smith and captain Nathan Cayless insist the club -
which a little more than a season ago stood on the brink of
premiership glory after a record-setting 2001 - isn't in crisis.
Some might beg to differ.
The Eels have now won just 4 of their last 18 games in a stunning and
deeply worrying form reversal.
They went into the 2001 grand final raging favourites after smashing
a host of point scoring records and securing the minor premiership
for the first time since 1986.
History shows they lost the match that mattered to Newcastle after
failing to handle the occasion.
Their present alarming form slump shows Smith's team has failed to
recover from the immense disappointment of capitulating in the most
important game of their lives.
Parramatta's latest defeat, a 30-10 hammering at the hands of the
Bulldogs at Telstra Stadium after a shocking period in which they
conceded four tries in 20 minutes, confirmed the Eels were a long way
off the premiership pace this campaign.
Smith argues, with some merit, that Parramatta's wicked early-season
draw was to blame for his side's ordinary start to 2003.

Pappas's message to Piggins: It's time
Stuart Honeysett: SYDNEY lawyer Nick Pappas has unveiled the board he
hopes will end George Piggins' 14-year reign at South Sydney,
describing it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the embattled
club.
The proposed board includes television personalities Andrew Denton
and Ray Martin, and former NSW premier Nick Greiner.
"I don't think I'll be able to assemble a team like this again,"
Pappas said.
"Pulling these people together is really a rare event.
"We're very fortunate that we can call on these people. I'm labouring
that point but it's critical.
"Yes we have a well-meaning board there now but they're not of the
calibre to ensure Souths get over some very difficult thresholds they
have to cross in the years ahead.
"They're just not going to be coming in and going out; they're going
to be there for the long haul to achieve the results we want to
achieve."
Pappas nominated the alternative board to Souths chief executive
David Tapp before yesterday's 5pm deadline.
The 950 voting members will decide the issue at the annual general
meeting on April 13.

Hull 20 defeated Wigan 4
Australian Test winger Brett Dallas has been ruled out of Wigan's
Powergen Challenge Cup semi-final against Bradford next Sunday after
pulling a hamstring in their 20-4 Super League defeat at Hull.
The pacy Dallas, who missed the second half of last season with a
knee injury, is facing up to a month's lay-off after picking up the
injury midway through the second half at the Kingston Communications
Stadium.
The Warriors, already without Andy Farrell, Mick Cassidy and Jamie
Ainscough, also lost hooker Mark Smith (shoulder) and second-rower
Stephen Wild (ankle) as they suffered a third defeat in five games.
Hull, too, picked up serious injuries which took some of the gloss
off a third straight win which lifted them to the top of the table.
Second-rower Scott Logan was taken to hospital for X-rays on a
suspected broken ankle, centre Toa Kohe-Love dislocated a shoulder
and captain Jason Smith sustained a sternum injury.
"I was delighted with the result," said head coach Shaun
McRae. "Unfortunately, there is a price to pay.
"They are three key players to us and I'm very grateful we're not
playing next week."
Tries from Colin Best, Adam Maher and Kirk Yeaman, plus four goals
from Steve Prescott, helped Hull to a comfortable victory in front of
another bumper crowd of 11,536 at their new stadium.
Wigan rarely threatened the home tryline until teenage loose forward
Gareth Hock slipped both markers at a play-the-ball 15 metres out to
race over for his fifth try in six matches.
"It was very pleasing," admitted McRae. "Wigan are a terrific side
and, although they had some players missing, they had a lot of
quality players on the field.
"It was going to take a quality performance to beat them and we got
it. It was the first time we've played a top-six club this season and
so it's a good result for us."
Wigan will slip into the bottom half of Super League after the
weekend but coach Stuart Raper remains upbeat over their prospects.
"It's always disappointing to lose but I'm proud of the guys'
efforts," he said. "I don't think the scoreline reflected the match.
"I've got every faith in the guys. They'll stick together and get
better."

Brisbane's new Suncorp Stadium puts fans in the action
Michael Madigan: YOU will sit as little as 6m from the touch-line,
cradled in your own bucket seat knowing you're closer to the on-field
action than any sports fan in Australia.
Back in the cheap seats the farthest fan will be less than 50m behind
you, still close enough to see the sweat.
If you miss the action that planners guarantee you'll be able to see
it again no matter where you're sitting, via two 60sq m videos
screening replays.
Around you, enough people to fill a medium Queensland city will be
either watching the game, eating at one of the 2020 dining spaces or
lounging at one of the outdoor bars, watching the game while drinking
a beer.
Amid the industrial strife and anxiety about completion dates, the
reality is that when the Suncorp Stadium opens in June Queenslanders
will have a world- class stadium bringing fans closer to the playing
field than any stadium in Australia.

Cowboys united at last
Steve Ricketts: FORMER North Queensland Cowboys forward Owen
Cunningham says the current team has found the secret to the winning
culture which has eluded the club since its inception in 1995.
Cunningham said yesterday coach Graham Murray and conditioner Billy
Johnstone had built a "one-in all-in approach" to football which
could see the Cowboys beat the Brisbane Broncos for the first time at
Townsville's Dairy Farmers Stadium tonight.
Even Broncos skipper Gorden Tallis rates this Cowboys team the
toughest he has seen with veteran forward Kevin Campion bringing a
winning attitude.
But Tallis said the 1997 side, which included Cunningham, Ian
Roberts, John Lomax and Steve Walters, also was tough and had the
edge in experience.

Salford unveil plans for £35m stadium
Salford City Reds have unveiled plans for a £35million, 20,000-
stadium on vacant land in Barton.
The futuristic development is the product of four years' planning
work and a formal planning application has been submitted to
Manchester City Council.
Top architects Arup, who have also been responsible for the
Millennium stadium, Sydney Stadium and the City of Manchester Stadium
are working on the project.
The stadium, which will house a 200-bedroom hotel, conference and
banqueting facilities and 62 corporate hospitality boxes, will
contain an approved "safe standing" area to house fans who currently
occupy the terracing at the club's current home, The Willows.
Salford were relegated from the Super League last season but are
keeping a professional squad in their quest to bounce back at the
first attempt from National League One.
The scheme also includes a shopping mall and casino, and additional
road, rail and Metrolink extensions are likely to serve the site.
City council chief executive John Willis said: "In principle, the
council is keen to support any development that will bring new
investment and opportunities to Salford.
"We understand what the club is trying to achieve in keeping
professional sport alive in this city in a brand new stadium which is
also available to local people. This sort of new facility will
benefit the city in all kinds of ways."

Bulldogs 30 defeated Parramatta 10
The Bulldogs have returned to the top of the National Rugby League
ladder for the first time since that fateful August day last year
after smashing Parramatta 30-10 in the western Sydney derby at
Telstra Stadium.
The competition favourites piled on five first-half tries to have the
match sewn up at 28-4 before the break.
Parramatta showed some fight after the interval but not nearly enough
to stop the Bulldogs from rising above the premiership pack seven-and-
a-half painful months after being docked 37 points for breaching the
salary cap.
Parramatta's woes could well be compounded on Monday if judiciary
commissioner Jim Hall opts to take more action against Ashley
Graham's late shoulder charge on Bulldogs five-eighth Jonathan
Thurston than referee Paul Simpkins did.
An injured Thurston was forced to leave the field after being taken
out well after offloading the ball to teammate Jamie Feeney in the
57th minute.
Thurston's halves partner Brent Sherwin had a much happier night,
leading the Dogs around capably in the absence of Braith Anasta to
possibly play his way into NSW's preliminary 30-man State of Origin
squad to be announced on Monday.
The Eels led 4-2 early after winger Jason Moodie dived over in the
left corner, but a steady flow of tries gave the Bulldogs their
commanding halftime lead.
The Dogs posted their first four-pointer through powerhouse winger
Matt Utai in the 18th minute before centre Nigel Vagana (25th),
prominent prop Mark O'Meley (31st), fullback Luke Patten (36th) and
goalkicking winger Hazem El Masri (40th) put the issue beyond doubt.
Graham bagged Parramatta's second try in the 47th minute to add some
respectability to the scoreline before El Masri added a penalty goal
five minutes later to finish with the match with a 14-point haul.
The match ended in driving rain, but the Eels could hardly blame the
conditions for a hugely disappointing performance before almost
25,000 fans at the Olympic stadium.
The Eels are now one from four this season and have won just four of
their last 18 matches since round 13 last year.

RUGBY LEAGUE HISTORY
Twelfth Kangaroos - 1967
http://www.rl1908.com/
The 1967 Kangaroos left behind two young stars who were expected to
be selected for tour - Bob McCarthy and Bob Fulton.
The team was captain-coached by Reg Gasnier and included Branson,
Coote, Goldspink, Irvine, Langlands, Kelly, Moore, Raper, Sattler and
Billy Smith.
In the First Test Britain claimed opening honours winning by 16-11,
worse news for the Australians was the fracture to Gasnier's leg
which ultimately meant he had just played his final Test.
Raper and Smith were also missing for the 2nd Test and the Kangaroos
looked to be in trouble. A see-sawing encounter followed as
Australia's grip on the Ashes looked doubtful. However two late tries
to the Kangaroos saw them win 17-11.
On a snow and ice bound field that was as hard as concrete, Australia
won the 3rd Test. Conditions were so bad most soccer matches had been
called off earlier in the day.
It was a tough match, with Raper again inspirational. The score was 3-
0 to Australia at half-time, and only 11-3 in the end, but it was all
the Kangaroos needed to retain the Ashes.
The French leg of the tour proved to be a major disappointment as the
Australians failed to take any of the three Tests against France.
Reg Gasnier returned to the field from injury in a minor game against
Espoirs' (Young Hopefuls of France) to rest some his weary players.
The great man limped off near the end of the game and never played
again.

Mondays question to the League Coach eGroup
I coach an under 11 team that last season convincingly one a B grade
competition.
This year we have gone up to A grade and played our first competition
game last weekend, the team we played was a very experienced A grade
side having come 3rd, 2nd, 2nd in the A grade comp over the past 3
seasons.
We defended well and were down only 5 nil at half time and 12 nil
with 10 minutes to go but just ran out of puff.
The major problem we had on the weekend was that we had no football,
in the first half we did not complete one set of six and in the
second half just one.
The following is a bit of war and peace but if you guys could pass
comments on my plans and offer advice it would appreciated.
Please keep in my that I do believe we have enough talent to be more
than competitive.
The game plan of the team is based on red and green zone, that is the
red is our half and the green there's.
The basic plan is 2 forwards to the centre of the field of the first
receiver and then to any side
with a big mobile forward hitting the ball short off the 5/8 then a
backs ball and kick/run on the last.
I try to give the half 5/8 the latitude to make there own mind up
once we cross into the green zone. This plan worked great for us last
year but I am thinking I
need to make some slight changes to get us going forward.
I have a really talented 1/2 that can pass and evade well.
A 5/8 that is also elusive but a great runner of the ball.
Two centres and a full back that are quick as lightning and can step
well(I use these three to get us out of our 10m and always get 30m
plus)
In the forwards I have 3 big hard runners (one that is quite fast)
that can go forward but need to run on harder.
I have one other forward that is tall, athletic and quite devastating
and can pass, I have not really used his passing skills much.
Two other forwards that are big but are on and off and I find it hard
to inspire them.
I am looking for some ideas on how to better use the strengths of
each boy.
Some of the things I have considered is using my half 5/8 as first
recievers either side of the ruck as there best pass side's are
opposite each other. Ditching the 3rd wide running forward and
throwing it to the speed out wide. Having my 5/8 run more.
The last thing I am looking is some advice on training them and
lifting there intensity, they are used to winning by fifty points not
getting beaten.
I try to keep training very simple and don't like to constantly
change drills, I break my training up into defence and attack and try
to be specific and team orientated.
I always end training with a session of up and back line defence with
a moving tackle bag that the boy in front has to tackle and everyone
else still moves up, we always start with 54 tackles at the beginning
of training and I add six for every dropped ball or missed tackle
through training.
If a big fella tackles a stepping speedster I take six off and for
every 2nd perfect set of up and backs I also take six off.
I do tackling practise most nights for 15minutes lately front on with
each boy holding tennis balls in there hand to force them to tackle
with there shoulder.
I either do 3 on 2, 4 on 3 etc or running off 1st receiver, through
bump pads and off loading or some other similar ball handling drill.
If time permits I then have some sort of game with the boys.
I have been thinking about working more cut out passes, unders and
overs and other basic ball plays into the forward work as we need to
get over the advantage line.
Sorry for going all over the place but I hope you guys can give me
some advice.
John
