* RLCM COMMENT
Souths prove doubters wrong - By Gary Roberts
http://www.rlcm.com.au/weeklynews.shtml
* After criticism of South Sydney last week this writer has just
taken his foot out of his mouth and congratulates Souths for putting
up a courageous display at Aussie Stadium yesterday.
They were unlucky not to have received the two points. Souths had the
game won until the dying seconds of the game.
Paul Langmack and his team achieved everything they set out to do in
a game of football. The only thing missing was the two points they
went to the Broncos.
Langmack said "It wasn't good, but as I told the boys, 'that's big-
time footy', we should have won and the players are cranky. We
probably made more line breaks than the Broncos, but things like that
ball steal are why Gordie (Tallis) is such a great player."
Wayne Bennett said, "With about 30 seconds to go, I had the losing
speech ready, nothing much has changed really. I've still got the
losing feeling even though we won.
"We just never stopped believing, which is one of their great
strengths. It keeps me coaching I guess."
Souths were given a massive points start by punters prior to the game
against the more fancied Broncos.
But by sticking to a rigid game plan and, receiving favourable ball
from Broncos errors, having a no frills defence and a belief in
themselves, a point that was questioned by this columnist last week,
they almost brought off a major upset.
The Broncos received two points for their effort. Their play was full
of errors and did not allow them to gain continuity in attack. Their
ball runners showed no creativity.
Bennett said earlier this year he was looking for flair and the
spreading of the ball in 2003, it was not seen in this game.
The Bronco play was a pass from dummy half to a predictable runner
who was an easy target for the Souths hitters. The need for more
option runners or an expanded plan in 'off the ball' plays is needed
to cause some indecision from the opposition.
All praise from this game goes to South Sydney and new coach Paul
Langmack.
Brisbane 22defeated Souths 20
* In another heart stopper a last minute try to fullback Reece
Simmonds gave St George Illawarra a win over Parramatta at WIN
Stadium.
It was an improved effort by the Dragons.
Parramatta halfback Paul Green did some good things, but he is not
going to be the saviour that coach Brian Smith had hoped he might be
in solving the clubs halfback position.

Spend this time talking to each player as an individual,
ascertaining and establishing his state of preparedness
and covering any aspects of the game specific to that
player.
I never give a footballer a job he cant do.
Encouragement and giving each footballer a job which
isnt beyond him often produce outstanding results.
- Jack Gibson
The expectation of this pre-game stage is that at a
designated time prior to kick-off all players are ready
(dressed / strapped / rubbed) to go to warm-up at the
same time no stragglers.
* Warm Up - A few thoughts:
(1) A regular routine where players feel
comfortable and know what is expected and
they can best prepare within those parameters.
(2) A varied routine that focuses on the particular
team goals for that week.
(3) A combination with the initial stages as part
of a regular routine and the final stages
focusing on team goals.
Warm-ups should prepare players for contact, include
some decision-making processes and culminate in
vigorous activity.
* Pre-Game Team Address
Ensure that while when you talk all players are seated,
can see you and you can see them and that they are
listening. Your address should be short. Therefore
the expectation within the room is that for that time
the dressing room is still and the focus in the room is
on you, the coach.
There is a tendency in many dressing sheds for many
people / players to have a say.
These players would be better served internalising
these thoughts and carrying the actions out onto the
field with them. Best practice would indicate messages
should come from the coach, team captain and if
invited to speak, senior players.
The focus of the address should be on:
(1) The specific goals that the team / coach has
set for the week. Often one team goal in
attack and one team goal in defence are
enough. These goals have been the focus of
the weeks training and the challenge for the
team on match day is for each individual
within the team to do his best to see the goals
are achieved.
(2) Positive thoughts and positive actions.........more

Stuart defends aggressive style
By Paul Kent: SYDNEY Roosters coach Ricky Stuart has accused rival
coaches of orchestrating a campaign against his club's defensive
style as civil war broke out in the NRL yesterday.
While round two of the NRL concluded with thrilling matches in Sydney
and Wollongong, debate was still raging over the latest incidents of
violence.
Coaches Michael Hagan from the Newcastle Knights and Peter Sharp of
Manly both claimed in yesterday's Sunday Telegraph that the emphasis
on defence had led to an increase in aggression, with Sharp saying it
was set to continue all year.

Paul prepares the recipe, but Rabbits forget final ingredient
By Phil Gould
To cause an upset in rugby league, you need five ingredients.
First of all you have to be the underdogs. For South Sydney, that's
easy when you are playing the Broncos. The Rabbits went into
yesterday's game as despised outsiders. I have known punters who will
waste $10 each way on a $51 chance at the races but no-one was
prepared to back South Sydney at $6 in a two-horse race.
Second, you have to have desire. You can't just stroll out onto the
park and hope that things go OK. When playing against the Broncos,
their strongest asset is your lack of self-belief. I wonder how many
times over the past 15 years the Broncos have been handed victories
by teams that lacked any genuine belief that they could beat them.
Third, you have to have a plan. This is where new South Sydney coach
Paul Langmack comes in. It was obvious from the start that Langmack
had not only given his team belief, and even an expectation of
success, but he had mapped out the plan on how it could be executed.

Blast from the past
History seemed to repeat itself at the weekend in a round of great
escapes and blunders that left fans and coaches with a sense of deja
vu, writes Roy Masters.
With Wayne Bennett coaching Brisbane to a Houdini victory, Tim Sheens
watching a lime-green Raiders win away and Brian Smith agonising over
the Dragons, we could be excused for thinking it was still 1991.
Throw in scrum flare-ups, gang tackling and the rise of the one-team
towns and you'd swear the game has not changed in 12 years.
However, the skill level has definitely been amped up and matches are
played at a rising, pulse-quickening fever.

Raper wants more from Warriors
Wigan coach Stuart Raper pulled no punches after watching his side
come from behind and secure a 34-29 win over Wakefield at Belle Vue.
The Wildcats took the early initiative through Richard Newlove, but
Wigan looked to have taken control with two tries midway through the
half by David Hodgson and Adrian Lam.
But the visitors struck back through Jon Wells, Brad Davis, who also
added a drop goal, and the accurate goal-kicking of Ian Knott to move
in front again.
Wigan regained a slender advantage with tries from Julian O'Neil and
Martin Aspinwall only Wakefield to edge ahead once more through Knott
and then a try from full-back Martyn Holland.
It was only as the match moved into the latter stages that the
Warriors' strength began to tell, Lam racing in for his second try to
leave the game finely poised at 29-28 before Hodgson secured the
points when he touched down on 73 minutes.
"We had to rely on youth to get us through and they did so, but we'll
have to have a look at how their tries were scored, especially off
breaks down our flanks," said Raper.
"Some blokes are going to cop it in the video session this week.
"They just can't afford to be making errors when others are coming
back because no-one has got a mortgage on places in this team."
Wakefield coach Shane McNally said: "The wins will come. We just have
to remain positive though I am disappointed.
"We are improving and heading in the right direction. We just have to
keep working hard."

Hull 38 defeated Widnes 18
Hull got back to winning ways after two straight defeats as they
overcame Widnes 38-18.
The Vikings put up a gutsy fighting performance and gave Hull several
scares before they finally succumbed.
Hull looked to have got the game in the bag when Jason Smith and
Richard Horne both went over and Steve Prescott landed three goals to
the hosts a 14-4 lead.
At that stage, Hull were in total control and were punishing any
mistakes from the visitors, but Widnes capitalised on some wayward
play from Hull to claw their way back to within two points by the
interval with tries by Jason Demitriou and prop David Mills.
Prescott stretched Hull's lead with a superb diving try early in the
second half and then landed two goals to put Hull 10 points ahead.
Adam Hughes narrowed the deficit to eight points with a penalty and
the game was back in the balance.
The decisive moment came seven minutes from time when Hull centre Toa
Kohe-love scored a sensational try from a full 90 yards.
Kohe-love snapped up a kick from Widnes' scrum-half Dean Lawford and
raced into the clear, heading off Hughes in a run for the line.
Prescott's goal gave Hull a 32-18 lead to finally break Widnes'
resistance.
There was still time for Scott Logan to dive over and Prescott was on
target to bring his match tally to 22 points and safely see Hull home.

Groundhog Year for Panthers
By JAMES HOOPER: PENRITH captain Craig Gower has criticised his
teammates for being mentally weak after the Panthers slumped to their
second loss of the new season on Saturday.
Penrith will today begin to search for answers about their
disappointing performance against the Melbourne Storm with Gower
adamant the players' psyche is a major part of the problem.
Coach John Lang has also questioned the performance declaring his
side will not beat anyone this season if they continue to play the
way they did against Melbourne.

Bennett can't shake losing feeling
Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett had just watched his side get out of
jail against South Sydney, but he still had that losing feeling.
By all rights, his side should have had it as well.
South Sydney coach Paul Langmack was on his way to the dressing room
to celebrate.
Langmack thought his side was safe after winger Nathan Merritt
produced a scything tackle to stop Stu Kelly only inches short of the
line, forcing a turnover and winning Souths possession with time
almost up.
The Broncos produced another of their trademark escapes at Aussie
Stadium on Sunday, stunning the heroic Rabbitohs with a try just
eight seconds from fulltime to score an amazing 22-20 victory.
"With about 30 seconds to go ... I had the losing speech ready,"
Bennett said.
"Nothing much has changed really. I've still got the losing feeling
even though we won.
"We just never stopped believing, which is one of their great
strengths. It keeps me coaching I guess."
Brisbane trailed 20-18 with less than 15 seconds remaining and South
Sydney had the ball and all the momentum after an inspired
performance and some desperate last-ditch defence.
But that's when Brisbane captain Gorden Tallis turned ugly sister to
ruin the South Sydney fairytale.
The barnstorming second rower stripped Souths prop Paul Stringer -
his side's best in an inspired performance - and the ball fell for
Shaun Berrigan who fed Brent Tate to score and give the Broncos a
stunning victory.
When Tate planted the ball over the line, there was eight seconds
remaining on the clock.
South Sydney players fell to their knees while the Broncos celebrated
as video referee Phil Cooley correctly ruled in favour of the
visitors.
"I don't know what the rule was, whether you can still strip but I
was going to strip it anyway," Tallis said afterwards.
"You give away a penalty with eight seconds to go...you're not going
to be too worried are you? It just happened to work. You feel sorry
for them."

NZ Warrior 24 defeated Bulldogs 20
Warriors too strong for Bulldogs
In a huge clash of the forwards the NZ Warriors edged the Bulldogs 24-
20 in an NRL thriller at Ericsson Stadium.
As they did against the Knights, the Warriors were all breathing fire
from the outset.
Props Mark Tookey and Jerry Seuseu supplied the yardage straight away
to allow halfback Stacey Jones to weave his magic, his banana kick
providing the customary try to right wing Henry Faafili in the fourth
minute.
Jones failed to convert from wide out.
The score was doubled 10 minutes later when Jones, surrounded by the
Bulldogs defence 10m out, had the vision to kick to the left hand
corner for winger Francis Meli to collect and score.
Canterbury opened their scoring in the 18th minute, quick hands by
Braith Anasta gave Nigel Vagana a sniff of the tryline, and that's
all he needed to spin off opposite Clinton Toopi to score.
Three minutes later the visitors hit the lead when the Warriors'
right hand defence was caught short, Willie Talau breaking through
for Willie Mason to score.
The Bulldogs had the momentum and extended their lead with an Hazem
El Masri penalty following a late tackle on the ever-dangerous
Anasta.
After half an hour Warriors coach Daniel Anderson sent on his two
bustling young props Iafeta Paleaasina and Evarn Tuimavave, and they
didn't let him down, both providing storming runs for the Warriors to
regain the advantage up front.
Jones perfectly timed a pass to send Awen Guttenbeil away for the
try.
The Warriors regained the lead on the stroke of halftime when Hohaia
scored from a pass by Guttenbeil off a quick Jones penalty tap as
they went into the break 18-14 ahead.
Hohaia extended their lead in the 43rd minute, displaying great leg
strength to kick off two tacklers. Marsh goaled to make it 24-14 and
New Zealand was well on top.
But the Warriors lost some of their intensity as Matt Utai put the
`Dogs back into the match in the 56th minute, after a failed attempt
by Warriors centre John Carlaw to intercept.
The defensive hits by both teams increased as both teams became more
desperate, tryscoring chances went begging as the mistakes increased.
The crowd were in a frenzy as the Warriors clung onto their lead.
A penalty with 20 seconds remaining was the Bulldogs' final chance,
but Toopi's intercept and the knock-on ended the game, to the relief
of the 16,229 crowd.

Broncos 22 defeated Souths 20
Broncos seize late winner
Brisbane scored with eight seconds left in the match to win 22-20 and
ruin a South Sydney fairytale in their National Rugby League game at
Aussie Stadium.
With the Rabbitohs clinging to a 20-18 lead, prop Paul Stinger took
the ball out from his own line but was stripped by Brisbane captain
Gorden Tallis.
The ball fell for Shaun Berrigan and he sent Brent Tate over for the
try to steal the match.
South Sydney led 20-12 with only six minutes remaining after Owen
Craigie took an intercept and raced 75 metres to score.
But Tallis set up a try for Michael De Vere with a grubber kick and
then produced some quick thinking at the end to secure the Broncos an
unlikely victory.
Souths led 6-4 at halftime and looked on their way to a stunning
upset when Justin Smith crashed over from dummy half three minutes
into the second half.
But the Broncos sprung to life in the 51st minute, Casey McGuire
crossing in the corner and video referee Phil Cooley awarding the try
to narrow the gap to four points.
Minutes later the Broncos levelled terms when captain Gorden Tallis
went on a trademark burst, beating former teammate Ashley Harrison
and winger Ahmad Bajouri on a 35 metre charge.
Tallis appeared to lose the ball as he crossed the line, but referee
Shayne Hayne awarded the try, drawing loud boos from a pro-Souths
crowd of 9,830.
But Justin Smith put the Rabbitohs back in front with a penalty goal
in the 65th minute before Owen Craigie's intercept try.
An unlikely Souths win was snatched away however with Tallis' late
heroics, setting up Tate's match-winning try.

Dragons 30 defeated Parramatta 28
Dragons snatch last minute win. A last minute try to fullback Reece
Simmonds gave St George Illawarra a heart-stopping 30-28 NRL win over
Parramatta at WIN Stadium.
Simmonds showed great skills to scoop up the ball on the run and
score under the post after good lead-up work from winger Amos Roberts
and five-eighth Ben Hornby.
Parramatta had looked liked taking home the two competition points
after rallying from 24-16 down late in the game.
A Dragons win looked remote at best after Parramatta dominated the
opening exchanges and led 12-0 after 10 minutes through converted
tries to second rower Daniel Wagon and winger Jason Moodie.
The home team had hardly ventured outside its own half before classy
centre Mark Gasnier dragged St George Illawarra into the contest with
a break to set up a desperately needed try to Hornby in the 17th
minute.
A solo try to hooker Mark Riddell levelled the scores in the 23rd
minute, but the Eels regained the lead with a four-pointer to Luke
Burt, off a cross field bomb from halfback Paul Green, on the half
hour.
The Dragons snatched a halftime lead when debutant halfback Dean
Byrne scored and Riddell converted six minutes before the break.
Gasnier's second major impact looked to have shot the Dragons clear.
The Kangaroo centre displayed great strength and speed to burst free
from a standing start and outpace the defence in a 55 metre
individual effort to stretch St George Illawarra's lead to eight
points after 54 minutes.
The injection of interchange forward Lee Hopkins midway through the
second half paid instant dividends to Parramatta.
The Eels hit the front when Burt regathered a Green kick to touch
down out wide in the 69th minute.
But the Dragons had the final say to post their first win of the
season in exciting fashion.

BRIERS IS WOLVES HERO
Warrington Wolves coach Paul Cullen hailed stand-off Lee Briers after
his side's 29-8 demolition of the London Broncos.
Briers was the inspiration behind Wolves' second win of the new Super
League season and had a hand in first-half tries by Sid Domic and
Brent Grose.
"Lee Briers is the natural leader of this club," said Cullen.
"Some players are captains but Lee Briers is a leader. He is the
leader of this side."
Wolves led 14-8 at half-time but cut loose after the break with
further tries from Ben Westwood, Iain Sibbit and Graham Appo.
Cullen added: "We played very smart. I rate London very highly but we
did to them what they did to Hull only a couple of weeks ago. When we
only had 12 men on the field I hardly noticed."
Broncos coach Tony Rea blasted his side's lack of enthusiasm as they
crashed to a second successive home defeat.
"It's probably as bad as it gets," he groaned. "We lacked physical
strength and I don't like that and it's something I don't often say
about the team.
"Warrington got us on enthusiasm I thought. The under-dogs are always
going to come at you harder."

NZ recruitment poster sparks row
By PETER JESSUP: The Warriors have cried "foul" over a Mt Albert
Rugby League club promotion that offers young players a chance to
train with the Canterbury Bulldogs.
It was the Mt Albert Lions who first applied to play in the
Australian premiership competition in the early 1980s, a vision that
became the Warriors, but now the NRL club is accusing the Lions of
trying to undermine its operation.
The problem has arisen through Lions Bartercard Cup coach John
Ackland being contracted to the Dogs as a talent scout.
At the heart of the row is a recruitment poster for the Mt Albert
under-16 Bartercard Cup team that has been distributed to schools.
It carries Lions and Bulldogs logos and the slogan "Get yourself
discovered by the NRL."

Top Dog keeps himself on a tight leash
Canterbury's Steve Folkes is happy to let his record and hopes do his
talking, writes Roy Masters.
Steve Folkes wore his standard but chilly 'do not disturb' look. It
prompted the question of the Bulldogs' coach: "Do teams take on the
personality of the coach?"
His face remained impassive, his dark eyes wary. He knew what was
meant but wanted it spelt out.
"You are intense, driven, confrontational ..." I continued.
It would be convenient to say he was confrontational in denying he
was confrontational, but it would also be false.
Emotions roll across Folkes's sharp features like low pressure
systems over a meteorologist's map, but he is not confrontational,
merely ice-cold honest.

It's time for our game to answer all the big questions ...
By Phil Gould: NRL boss David Gallop has asked the competition's 15
clubs to start thinking about their future and the future of rugby
league in this country.
It seems strange to be talking about this when we have been through a
world of trouble on this very subject over the past eight years, and
particularly when everything seems to be going really well for league.
However, Gallop is right. We need to keep thinking about the future,
looking at our game and the popularity and viability of our clubs.
Remember, at the end of the 2005 season, all franchise agreements
expire. Every club is going to have to reapply for 2006 and beyond.
In effect, Gallop is asking the clubs to consider what they think the
NRL competition should look like then, and what role they hope to
play in a national competition in the future.
It's very important - for several reasons.
First, broadcasting agreements with Channel Nine and pay television,
not to mention our major sponsorship with Telstra, are in place for a
little while beyond 2005, but we must start thinking about what rugby
league will be worth to these people down the track. We have to make
sure that when these agreements are up for negotiation, the NRL is
the best and most valuable sporting competition in the country.
We have to remember that the pay-TV industry has rationalised itself
so there will not be the competition for the product we enjoyed when
league last negotiated its broadcasting deal.
Our clubs rely very heavily on the broadcast rights funding and many
would find it hard to stay alive if this income were reduced.
Second, our game needs to consider whether it should expand into new
areas, or revisit old areas sacrificed as part of the rationalisation
a few seasons ago, as part of the strategy to make our game more
valuable.
The Central Coast, Gold Coast, a second Brisbane or New Zealand team,
even Adelaide or Perth have been mentioned as possible areas for
expansion.
You fans answer the questions for me. Is the game ready to expand?
How many teams should we have? Should teams relocate from the
competitive and congested Sydney market to more viable markets
throughout Australia? Should we just stay the same forever?

COWBOYS 30 DEFEATED SEA EAGLES 20
Cowboys upset leaves Manly kicking themselves
By Brad Walter: The last time Ben Walker played for the Sea Eagles,
he was the NRL's 2001 leading point-scorer - in his return match last
night, Manly crucially couldn't land a goal.
Despite scoring five tries to four, Manly were defeated by the
Cowboys in a frustrating match that finished with John Hopoate being
cautioned for dissent as North Queensland centre Josh Hannay lined up
his seventh successful goal kick just seconds before full-time.
In contrast, Walker failed with two early conversion attempts and his
scrumbase partner Jason Ferris missed three shots as the Cowboys
overcame the loss of prop Paul Rauhihi, lock Glenn Morrison and
winger Ty Williams through injury to snatch an unlikely win.

Canberra 15 defeated Wests Tigers 8
Elliott angry at late hit
CANBERRA RAIDERS crunched out a victory over the Wests Tigers
tonight, won their first match at Leichhardt Oval in nine years and
recorded their first back-to-back away victories since 2001.
But at the post-match press conference coach Matthew Elliott was not
exactly jumping for joy after a physical Tigers inflicted injuries to
several of his players, with reserve back Michael Monaghan going to
hospital suffering a broken jaw.
"I'm probably not feeling as jubilant as I should," Elliott said.
"I've got a player going to hospital with a broken jaw who was hit
late so I can't say I'm as happy as I should be.
"I don't like seeing my players busted, not in that fashion anyway."
Elliott admitted he did not see the 60th minute incident and could
not say who made the alleged late hit but he expected NRL
commissioner Jim Hall to carefully study the videotape on Monday.

Storm 42 defeated Panthers 16
After ignoring a withering injury toll to flog Penrith last night,
Melbourne learnt they may be without former Australia Test prop
Rodney Howe for the rest of the season.
The Storm, who have the bye next weekend, guaranteed themselves a
share of the competition lead going into their round-four game
against Newcastle when they ran in eight tries in their demolition of
the bitterly disappointing Panthers.
Former trackwork jockey Billy Slater - switched from centre to
fullback - made an early play for the NRL's rookie-of-the-year award
with another stunning display which included two tries. Late
inclusion Semi Tadulala also finished with a double.
But coach Craig Bellamy delivered some sobering news afterwards on
Howe, who lasted only a few minutes of the first half before hobbling
off with a knee injury.

Pick them! says Steve Simms
STEVE Simms says Salford City Reds stars deserve to be considered for
representative honours this season despite not playing in the Super
League.
The Reds boss believes Neil Baynes, Andy Coley, Mal Alker and Stuart
Littler are all worthy to be selected for high-profile fixtures such
as the Origin Series.
"All these lads are playing well, progressing and impressing," said
Simms. "None of them would be out of place in most Super League
squads and they warrant a chance.
"The players are young, talented and in good form and if they are
given their chance I am sure they will not disappoint.
"Andy Kirk is another excellent prospect on our books who could well
come into the reckoning for Yorkshire.
"In my view, the players have what it takes and they can certainly
play alongside Super League players."

Lee Finnerty and Dane Dorahy sign for Halifax
Posted Saturday, March 22, 2003 by rlcm57
Halifax have made offers of permanent contracts to trialist duo Lee
Finnerty and Dane Dorahy after their impressive three-month spell
with the club.
Tony Anderson, whose side visit Bradford Bulls on Sunday evening, has
been delighted with the way the pair have adapted to life at The Shay
since joining on trial in January.
While Dorahy - the former Wakefield scrum half - and Kiwi full back
Finnerty still have two weeks remaining on that short-term deal,
Anderson has made permanent offers to the pair and hopes that they
will put pen to paper in the near future.
Young winger Chris Norman is also hoping to join the club full time
when his apprenticeship ends in the summer, and Anderson admits that
the good news epitomises their solid start to the season.

St Helens 54 defeated Castleford 12
Posted Saturday, March 22, 2003 by rlcm57
By Ian Laybourn: Sean Long put surprise packet Castleford firmly in
their place with a sparkling hat-trick of tries as Tetley's Super
League champions St Helens strengthened their position at the top of
the table.
The mercurial scrum-half, now injury-free and playing at the top of
his form, grabbed the 100th try of his career to help Saints quell an
early onslaught from the Tigers.
He then added two more after the break and kicked all nine
conversions for a 30-point haul as Ian Millward's men ran riot with
six second-half tries to secure a third successive win.
St Helens were also indebted to another brilliant performance from
Long's half-back partner Paul Sculthorpe, who had a hand in five of
his side's nine tries.
Yet there was little sign of the one-way traffic as Castleford,
hoping to capitalise on their best-ever start to a Super League
season, had threatened to pull off their first league win at Knowsley
Road for 13 years when they stormed into a 10-0 lead inside 14
minutes.
The luck went the way of the Tigers in the early stages, with prop
Andy Lynch making the most of a ricochet from Danny Orr's pass close
to the line to score a fifth-minute try.

* RUGBY LEAGUE HISTORY -
http://www.rl1908.com/Hoffame/Wally-Lewis-Rugby-League.htm
In the early 1980s there were those who acclaimed Wally Lewis as the
best player the game had ever seen.
Others, particularly the NSW press, portrayed him as a controversial
figure that should be cut down to size.
A decade later Wally Lewis had them all in agreement after a playing
career of countless highlights for his clubs, Queensland and
Australia.
Wally Lewis first came to wider attention as a member of the famed
Australian Schoolboys Rugby Union side that toured Europe, Britain
and Japan in 1977-78. His team mates included the Ella brothers
(Mark, Glen and Gary), Michael O'Connor, Tony Melrose and Michael
Hawker. Lewis had repeated his final school year at Brisbane State
High to gain selection in the team but his opportunities were limited
once the tour was underway due to injury.
Lewis though was far from a disciple to the 15-man game. Growing up
in a rugby league family, he played junior rugby league in Brisbane
and represented Queensland rugby league throughout his teenage years.
With a Wallabies Test centre spot in his sights, Lewis continued to
play league for Valleys lower grades as an amateur'. The QRU though
decided for itself that Lewis had no intention of remaining "loyal"
and Wally was informed indirectly that he would not be considered for
selection. That was enough for Wally to end his flirtation with the
15-man game.
In April 1978 Lewis made his first grade debut for Valleys when he
came on from the bench at half-time in an Amco Cup tie against
Illawarra. Playing lock-forward he remained in firsts throughout the
season and earned the Brisbane Colt of the Year Award as Valleys made
the Grand Final. Lewis was then made his first offer to move to
Sydney, from Norths.
Lewis continued to represent Brisbane in 1979 Amco Cup matches and
against the touring British Lions, but couldn't oust Norm Carr from
the starting line-up. He made his Queensland debut in the final match
against NSW when chosen as a replacement. On the club scene he led
Valleys to a 26-0 Grand Final win over the Wayne Bennett coached
Souths in front of 35,000 fans.
Through this period Wally spent hours training with Valleys team mate
Ross Strudwick perfecting the delivery of 30 yard passes, to match
his already impressive ball skills.
Queensland finally selected Lewis in their starting side in 1980 - at
half back. Lewis was lost in the unfamiliar position and the Maroons
lost to NSW again. Ironically, it meant that the next state game
would be the first to be played under Origin rules more.

Question; Can anyone provide me with restart game plans from a kick
off. Setting out in detail which player carries the ball forward on
each tackle and on what part of the field. I currently use the field
split in 3 channels from goal post to goal post. With left channel
been lane, centre been channel and right been road.
Cheers
Russell Nathan-Wong
maito:
rnwong@...
Answer: This is a massive question !
A year or so ago we discussed positioning for players at the restart
and I described placing the halves further forward than we might
traditionally in order to get a couple of quick ptbs while the
defending side were still organising.
In part Russell, the important part of this is what are you aiming to
do in this first set of six ?
If you're target's ball security, a kick and a good chase then you're
going to use a conservative first set and possible just make a simple
three hitups, look to go wider on the fourth and then kick/chase on
the 5th.
If you're playing more aggresively, you might want to have your
halves at the front of the kick receiving line up to then send a
couple of big forwards on runs or even make a quick 5m-10m scoot,
bringing the short side winger into play and then looking to exploit
some space on the open side as the defence moves across.
Sorry to answer your question with one of my own, but if you'd tell
us what you're aiming to do I'm sure we can bounce ideas around on
how to achieve it.
Also please mention the age group which you coach as that could
effect the replies from the group.
cheers
