A good sign for Origin hopes

BRISBANE Broncos centre Tonie Carroll yesterday officially made
himself available for Queensland Origin duty.

Carroll was unaware there was a cloud over his eligibility after he
turned out in the 2000 World Cup for his native New Zealand after
being overlooked by the Australian selectors.

He played two seasons in England with Leeds, but returned to the
Broncos this year intent on re-establishing his representative career.

"It is one of the main reasons I came back to Australia, to get back
into Origin football again," said Carroll.

Yesterday Queensland Rugby League managing director Ross Livermore
arrived at Brisbane training with a letter drafted to the Australian
Rugby League.

The letter laid out Carroll's intentions to make himself available
for Australian selection, effectively making him eligible to play for
Queensland in the Origin series that begins on June 11 at Suncorp
Stadium.

Carroll moved from New Zealand to Brisbane when he was six years old.

Holy Cross Headed For Victory

By Tim White: The famous football nursery, Holy Cross College Ryde,
are primed and ready for the up and coming Rugby League season.

For the First time since 2001 the college has put together a side
that is capable of winning the Nutri Grain Cup and the MCS.

Coached by former first grader Peter Sterling and offsider Keith
Rugg, the side is laced with Junior reps and Interstate reps. Leading
the school is captain and state 17's rep Bronson Harrison followed by
Australian Schoolboys hooker Luke Fahey who are forming a brutal
combination and are ready for any school.

The pride and skill of this team is second to none and they will be
there at the business end of the season. Holy Cross are strong all
over the park with Dave Gower, Harrison and Fahey leading the
forwards and pace and size in the backs.

Holy Cross believes they will be comptetive against every school
including St Greg's and Terra Sancta who, as of the moment, will not
play Holy Cross because of a ridiculous rule brought in by the MCS
where Holy Cross can only play local schools not the heavy wieghts of
schoolboy football. This puts rugby league at Holy Cross in jeopardy
of being lost for ever.

Once again any old boys or supporters, get down to Holy Cross on a
Thursday and watch these Tiger cubs roar.

NRL Club News from SMH

Edited by Steve Mascord and Jacquelin Magnay

Sydney Roosters

Hooker Craig Wing was last night named in the Roosters side to take
on Parramatta in Friday night's season opener - but whether he'll
play is another matter. Coach Ricky Stuart said Wing (ankle injury)
was a "60-40" chance but the utility star commented: "I don't think
Ricky wants me to play. Unless it is 100 per cent, he doesn't want me
to play. He's thinking he doesn't want to lose me for six weeks if I
injure it again." Ryan Cross or Lelea Paea will be omitted from the
five-man bench. Stuart, meanwhile, said: "Brad Fittler has more
football in him, much more than this season."

BRISBANE

With no injury problems for Sunday's trip to Penrith, Broncos coach
Wayne Bennett had time yesterday to have his hair dyed maroon to
raise funds for leukemia research.

BULLDOGS

Braith Anasta said he was thrilled to be getting the chance to play
lock against his local team, South Sydney, on Saturday night. "I
played lock growing up as a junior, for a lot of sides," Anasta
said. "I'm looking forward to it. I thought it [the switch from five-
eighth] could have been this year."

CANBERRA

Centre Adam Mogg and second-rower Ian Hindmarsh have been chosen to
take on North Queensland this Saturday despite having missed the
entire pre-season. Mogg withdrew from the World Sevens and the trial
against Melbourne with a hip flexor problem; Hindmarsh had surgery to
remove a foot spur during the summer.

CRONULLA

The Sharks have named three new signings - centre Jason Kent and
reserves Shaun Wessel and Don Tweddle - in their side to meet
Melbourne on Sunday. Unavailable through injury are five-eighth Jye
Mullane (ankle) and second-rower Matt Bickerstaff (shoulder).

MANLY

Model Sarah O'Hare is flying in from New York for the Sea Eagles'
season launch at Brookvale Oval on Saturday night. Second-rower
Solomon Haumono, meanwhile, hopes to secure a contract when he plays
against Penrith in a second grade trial at the same time.

MELBOURNE

Debutants Billy Slater and Dallas Johnson have been named in coach
Craig Bellamy's first side. Both are from Brisbane; former jockey
Slater, 18, is in the centres, 19-year-old Atherton forward Johnson
beat Danny Williams to the lock spot.

NEWCASTLE

Knights coach Michael Hagan yesterday named seven internationals in
the side to take on the Warriors this Sunday. Kurt Gidley partners
brother Matt in the centres and Anthony Quinn is on the wing.

NORTH QUEENSLAND

A training mishap appears to have ruled out Cowboys skipper Paul
Bowman from Saturday night's game against Canberra. "He went over on
his ankle during a drill," coach Graham Murray said. "He's trying to
be fit for this week but I've got my doubts, so I just left him out."

PARRAMATTA

Lee Hopkins has beaten David Solomona to one of the contentious
starting second row spots for the Eels.

PENRITH

Five-eighth Ryan Girdler is back from injury for Sunday's home tussle
with Brisbane, while Preston Campbell is to start his career with the
Panthers on the wing.

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA

New signings Hassan Saleh, Brett Firman and John Cross are part of a
Dragons side to take on Wests Tigers on Saturday night that contains
few surprises.

SOUTH SYDNEY

Hooker Shane Walker has had a hip flexor problem but officials are
confident he will line up to play the Bulldogs on Saturday.

WARRIORS

Skipper Monty Betham makes his first appearance for the Warriors
since injuring his knee in round three last year when they meet
Newcastle this Sunday. The Kiwi international turns 25 today and he
regains the captaincy from Stacey Jones.

WESTS TIGERS

Club chief executive Steve Noyce has explained why Wests Tigers have
transferred their home game against the Dragons to Telstra Stadium
for Saturday's double-header. "There are some advantages ... in terms
of guaranteed income and the stadium meeting all the match-day
operating costs," he said. "Depending on what the [crowd] figure is,
there's a profit sharing opportunity for us as well." He declined to
give figures.

Double Cross injury leaves Rooster feeling cheated

By Jacquelin Magnay: Ryan Cross is hoping his bad luck runs in twos,
not threes. Here he is on the eve of the season opener, swapping
punches with captain Brad Fittler, his footwork neat and sparky in a
long boxing session.

The crushing memory of his knee twisting at an ugly angle as he
scored a spectacular try in the fourth round against the then
Northern Eagles last season has faded but is not forgotten. The pain
of the broken shinbone that ended his 2001 season prematurely is
still keenly felt.

Two bad injuries in two seasons, putting on hold what many predict
will be a long representative career. He does not want a third.

"I've played 52 games in five years," said the 23-year-old who had
been courted by rugby union and was a talented shot putter in the
same vein as his junior world championships bronze medallist brother,
Clay Cross.

"Before I played grade I never got injured, in fact I never missed a
game until the last two years - last year I got to four rounds, the
year before it was round 10."

Breaking a tibia is an excruciating injury but the sharpest pain was
in Cross's heart as his team romped to a premiership. He had spent
most of the year on crutches, then in rehab, then swimming, attending
every one of the Roosters' training sessions - in a sense a part of
the team but not part of the team.

"I was happy for my teammates but ..." and he trails off, those
unspoken words not needing to be said.

Delay gives Langmack more time

By Steve Mascord: A computer glitch has given Paul Langmack two extra
weeks to win the South Sydney coaching job and opponents of club
president George Piggins more time to organise a coup.

Piggins last night confirmed that a delay in having the Rabbitohs'
yearly report printed had forced the annual general meeting set down
for March 30 to be delayed until April 13.

Piggins had already revealed he did not want a full-time coach
appointed until after the meeting in case he and fellow directors
were overthrown.

"I believe someone's computer went down ... unfortunately we're going
to find ourselves short of giving members 21 days' notice and our
solicitors suggested we delay the meeting by two weeks," Piggins said.

Asked if Langmack now had more breathing space, Piggins
replied: "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

"I'd rather wait until the [annual] meeting is out of the way but the
board will discuss which way we go when we meet next week."

Wellington turns to Knights

By Brent Read: RUGBY league officials in Wellington have turned to
the Newcastle Knights as they look to strengthen their claims for a
National Rugby League franchise.

Newcastle chief executive Ken Conway will travel to the New Zealand
capital on Thursday to take Wellington officials, including the Lord
Mayor and local politicians, through the machinations of an NRL club.

"I believe they're interested in two things," Conway said.

"They contacted us about playing a trial over there and they're keen
to put their hands up for an NRL franchise if one becomes available
either by relocation or an additional one.

"I'm going over there to talk to them about how our football club is
structured and a number of other issues that will perhaps benefit
them in their attempts to get an NRL team."

NZRL chairman Selwyn Pearson has made no secret of his desire to see
another team in New Zealand, possibly in Wellington, in the near
future.

The NRL has stated it has no intention to expand the competition
beyond 15 teams despite the constant lobbying of the Central Coast,
Gold Coast and NZ.

Cowboys skipper to miss opener

Steve Ricketts: PAUL Bowman's rotten luck with injuries has
continued, a training mishap forcing the North Queensland Cowboys
skipper out of Saturday night's NRL match against Canberra Raiders in
Townsville.

Bowman, who had a reconstruction of the right ankle in the off-
season, turned the other ankle during a defensive drill on Monday
night and was taken to hospital for X-rays which did not reveal a
break.

"Obviously I'm pretty disappointed and upset about it, but hopefully
I'll get the swelling down quickly," Bowman said. "But there is no
firm comeback date."

Bowman was restricted to 14 matches last year because of injuries and
did not feature in Queensland's successful defence of its State of
Origin crown after playing a starring role in 2001.

New Zealand Warriors signing David Myles, who had been earmarked for
five-eighth, has switched to centre for the Cowboys with Chris
Sheppard the new No. 6.

Another Warriors signing, Kevin Campion, assumes the captaincy and
like South Sydney's Bryan Fletcher takes on the leadership role
without having played a premiership match for his new club.

Widnes seek union players for possible relationship

By Dave Hadfield: Widnes have widened their search for players to
patch up their threadbare squad by advertising in a newspaper in
South Wales. The advert in the Western Mail invites Welsh players who
think they might be capable of playing in Super League to apply to an
address in the Midlands.

Widnes, who are down to their last 17 fit players, already have a
Welsh trialist playing in their under-21 side and believe the
upheavals in Welsh rugby union could persuade more to try their luck.
But a newspaper advert is not quite the desperate measure it might
seem, as St Helens came up with one of Great Britain's best prop
forwards, Cliff Watson, through a similar ploy in the 1960s.

Reds relishing Saints challenge

SALFORD Reds are relishing locking horns with Super League champions
St Helens.

Sunday's crunch Challenge Cup quarter-final clash against the star-
studded Saints cannot come soon enough for Karl Harrison's team.

The Reds are unbeaten this term and take on Ian Millward's side
buoyed by an 11-try blitzing of National League promotion rivals
Oldham.

Football director Steve Simms said: "We are ready and waiting!

"It's going to be tough - we're facing the number one team in England
but we're certainly not fazed by the prospect.

SEERS BOOST FOR WAKEFIELD

David Allen: Wakefield Trinity Wildcats hope to welcome back Matt
Seers to their side for the Tetley's Rugby Super League clash with
Wigan Warriors next weekend, but are counting the cost of Sunday's
bruising defeat at Bradford.
Seers has not played since breaking his hand in the Powergen
Challenge Cup win over Castleford Tigers in February.

However, he is now back in training and hopes to be given the all-
clear to face the Warriors next Sunday at Belle Vue after being
returning to ball handling work.

St Helens hit back in Batley cash row

St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus has accused his Batley counterpart
Kevin Nicholas of bringing the game into disrepute in a war of words
over the share-out of match receipts.

Nicholas accused the Super League champions of breaching Rugby League
bye-laws by not paying them 30 per cent of their share of the income
from their Powergen Challenge Cup tie immediately after the game.

The Bulldogs chairman also claimed Saints had failed to pay the
balance within the required seven days and had given them until today
to pay up in full.

But McManus said: "We are astounded at the unfounded and threatening
assertions of Mr Nicholas. He pre-agreed a clear payment schedule
with us early last week which we have in fact met early.

"This is clearly bringing the game into disrepute and we trust Rugby
League authorities look into his behaviour appropriately."

McManus denied St Helens were in financial trouble, revealing the
club have reduced their debt from £3million to £1million in the
last
six months.

Mason stands firm in Folkes dispute

Disgruntled Test prop Willie Mason has refused to relent in his
dispute with Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes, saying tension would remain
high unless he was reinstated to first grade next week.

"I didn't sign for three years to play reserve grade," Mason said in
defiance of a media ban slapped on him by the National Rugby League
club.

The 115kg prop was dropped from first grade for the Bulldogs' season-
opener against South Sydney on Saturday night at Telstra Stadium
because Folkes said he had a "bad attitude".

He would have been ruled out anyway with a quadriceps strain but that
was not the reason behind his demotion.

Both Folkes and Bulldogs chief executive Steve Mortimer, who met with
Mason on Monday to resolve the issue, have described the simmering
feud as a "storm in a tea cup".

But Mason, while pleased with his heart to heart chat with Mortimer,
said little would change unless he was in the top 17 for the round
two clash with New Zealand Warriors in Auckland on Sunday week.

Rabbitohs need two out of four: Peters

South Sydney halfback Willie Peters believes the Rabbitohs need to
win two out of their four opening matches to keep fans coming through
the gates.

The first test comes at Telstra Stadium on Saturday against the
Bulldogs in game two of the National Rugby League's double-header and
will probably be the toughest.

Both clubs are in turmoil and under pressure, particularly the
Rabbitohs after sacking Craig Coleman and, to a lesser extent, the
Bulldogs following tension between Willie Mason and coach Steve
Folkes, who has axed the giant prop from first grade for a poor
attitude.

It doesn't get much easier for the Bunnies in round two against the
Broncos before they clash with North Queensland at home and New
Zealand Warriors away.

National League 3 - Three Steps From Super League!

ST ALBANS CENTURIONS RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB

ST ALBANS CENTURIONS kicked off their 2003 campaign with an
impressive 24-14 win over local rivals Hemel Stags in their opening
RLC Cup game at Pennine Way on Sunday.

A hat-trick of tries from man of the match Tom Eisenhuth plus
touchdowns by last season's joint top tryscorer Dene Miller and Neil
Yates proved decisive despite the Centurions converting just two
goals, one by Nick Phillips Walker, the other by last year's prolific
kicker Steve Toon.

"It was a good solid perfomance and important for our new coach,
PEter Tonkin, to see the guys in action after training for two
months," said chairman Gary Tetlow.

"We gave 22 players a run-out, none of whom Peter has seen in match
action before, and thoroughly deserved to win. We now have a very
busy schedule leading up to the big kick-off against Teesside on May
3."

Despite a string of new signings, it was the old guard who got most
of the points at Hemel. The return of Eisenhuth is a huge fillip to
the Centurions - the Australian teacher was magnificent at hooker in
the early stages of last season only to be struck by a series of
serious injuries.

Miller, from Welwyn Garden City, was last year's Best Newcomer and
Toon, of Hatfield, was top points scorer. Cents' stalwarts John
Longden and Brian Molyneux were also impressively busy on Sunday.

"Tom had a blinder and Dene, despite making some mistakes early on,
was always dangerous with the ball,"said delighted veteran forward
Ken Edwards.

"We used most of the squad on a rotating basis and there was some
very good indicators of some quality players out there. The new guys -
Daniel Wortley, Adam Cox had good games too, and Quentin Kersh had an
absolute blinder; he'll be a very big acquisition for the club.

The weather was fine but very windy which meant a lot of spilt ball
and out of touch on the full kicks. It was quite scrappy but the
defence was very good considering the early stage of the season. We
were definitely the better side."

When Cambridge withdrew from the RLC Cup, a new pre-season
competition to give RL Conference lcubs warm-up matches, St Albans
stepped into the breach at very late notice - despite not fielding a
team in the RL Conference this season.

They will play in five group games but have had to concede the home
match with Hemel as it clashes with the existing friendly with
Castleford Tigers academy.

The Cents make their debut at Woollams this Sunday afternoon (MArch
16) on Harpenden Road when Bedford Swifts visit in the RLC Cup.

Having done the double over Bedford in the Conference last season, St
Albans will be looking for another morale-boosting victory. They
travel to Bedford for the return the following week before travelling
to Rugby Raiders on Sunday 30 March.

COACH EXTRACT - Defence by Glenn Bayliss from RLCM Book 4

http://www.rlcm.com.au/editions.htm

(iii) Longside Drift
If the defence line is to be attacked on the fringe of the
ruck, outside defenders drift back in to put more players
around the football, thus reducing the pass options and
applying more defence pressure on the attack.

5. Speed of the Line
The speed of the defensive line can be improved through
physical conditioning and commitment. The benefits
are:-(
a) Time
Reduce the amount of time the opposition has to think
or execute play.
(b) Options
Cover the ball carrier but just as importantly cover his
support players.
These three factors can cause the ball carrier to execute
a play not originally intended. It could lead to a player
receiving a pass while under defensive pressure. This
all leads to prospects of an increased error rate.
(d) Containment
A speedy defensive line is capable of containing play
to the ruck area or a particular area of the field (near
the sideline).
By containing the attack you reduce the "field" the
opposition has to work in so there is less chance of a
break in your own line if your defence is well organised.
(e) Possession
An organised defensive line that constantly pressures
the attack will force them to "chip" or "grubber"
kick.
This allows the defensive team a chance to regain
possession.

Successful defence depends on each player making
correct decisions. This decision making process is
enhanced by good coaching and communication so as
the player can:
1. Identify the problem
2. Decide on the correct action to take
3. Have the skill to execute that action
To assist this process, communication is paramount
and should occur when:
1. Equating numbers each side of the ruck
2. (between) Markers and "tight spot" players in the
line
3. Identifying (nominating) the player you are going
to tackle
4. Giving encouragement to fellow players especially
when they become fatigued.

(a) Conditioning
Improved conditioning of your team leads to:-~
increased work rate
~ faster player reactions
~ increased enjoyment
~ lower error rate
~ good self feeling

(b) Commitment
Players respond to both a challenge and
encouragement. Statistics sheets can be useful
motivational tools if used correctly. Remember, missed
tackles have more affect on the game than the actual
number of tackles.
Offer praise to players with high work rates as well as
those that make quality tackles or the tackles that really
count in desperate situations.

(c) Attitude
Players must have a positive attitude in defence with
assignments to achieve. These are:-moving
forward and ~ attacking the opposition attack
~ by reaching the advantage line to
~ gain ground while in defence ~ so as to
~ exert pressure ~ and
~ force errors ~ to
~ win back possession ~ and
~ control the game.
Above all remember - "There is attack in defence"
