EXTRACT FROM RLCM BOOK 21
http://www.rlcm.com.au/editions.htm

Weight Training

By Alex Corvo

Training with weights has become very popular in rugby league as
coaches, trainers and players realise the benefits of this
form of exercise. There are four fitness components
with weights.

These are:

1. Strength
2. Speed
3. Power
4. Cardiovascular and muscular endurance

Weight training can also improve muscle hypertrophy
(increased muscle size). It is only in the past four to five years
that many of the top level clubs have seen the need to incorporate
weight training into their overall training program. Virtually
all clubs now employ full time strength and conditioning coaches.

Coaches often ask “What is the best age for a junior
player to start weight training?” There is no easy
answer to this question, and there are a few variables
that need to be taken into consideration when
answering.

These include:

1. The age of the player
2. The skeletal age of the player i.e. the development
of the player’s bone structure

There may be up to four years variance in there when
comparing two 15 year-old boys, i.e. one may have
the skeletal age of 17 while the other a 13 year-old.
Most exercise scientists believe that at about 15 years
of age most children are “ready” to commence light
weight training. Initially it is recommended that no
resistance be used for specific strength training
exercises.

Once the player has mastered the lifting
technique gradual loads can be introduced.
The coach must stress the use of good form, body
alignment and technique. At this age the player training
should be directed toward high repetitions and sets and
lower loads.

All exercises must go through the complete
range of motion. Thirty minutes of weight training,
three times a week, with a day of active rest between
training sessions is recommended. In addition to
strength training work with free weights or machines,
the coach should remember to include exercises using
the player’s body weight as resistance. Exercises such
as chin ups and dips could be used.

Ensure a thorough warm up and warm down of up to 15 minutes each.
When training with weights it is vitally important that
the specificity training principle is adhered to. Many
rugby league players venture into gyms and train using
programs designed for body builders. Ask yourself this
quistion, “how many body builders do you see playing
rugby league”. Put simple, body builders should train
for body building and Rugby League players should
train for rugby league.

Most coaches would agree that power, strength and
speed combined with endurance are the most important
fitness components for a rugby league player to
develop. Olympic weight-lifters and throwers
(athletics) have been shown to produce the highest
power inputs. A major part of their training program
consists of explosive body movements such as the
power clean and the overhead jerk. These power
movements are combined with less dynamic (absolute
strength) exercises such as squats and bench presses.
Add to this routine some plyometric exercises and the
result is maximal power (speed/strength)
development................more.

Kelly's last stand

STUART Kelly knows this season is his best chance to make the leap
from cameo performer to regular Broncos cast member.

Kelly was no bit-part player last season, appearing in 23 of the
Broncos' 26 matches.

But only 10 of those starts came in the run-on team as the 27-year-
old found himself stuck behind a cohesive backline of representative
players.

But a host of end-of-season defections has cleared centre stage, and
the former Parramatta centre has come into the frame albeit in an
unfamiliar role on the wing.

"Describing it as a make-or-break year is probably a bit strong, but
there is no doubt this year is a big opportunity for me," Kelly said.

"With Chris Walker and Lote Tuqiri leaving, we are probably a little
lighter on in the outside backs this year than we have been recently.

"We have a couple of good young blokes coming through, but they might
still need a season or two to become regular first graders."

Veteran doggie looks to greener pastures

As part of a series counting down to the NRL season, Brad Walter
looks at the Bulldogs.

After 14 seasons with the Bulldogs, Steve Reardon is finally heading
back to Temora for good at the end of this year.

The longest-serving player at any NRL club, Reardon has been
threatening to return home virtually ever since he made his top-grade
debut in 1991, alongside Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes.

For the past five seasons, the 31-year-old back-rower has been on
year-by-year contracts and he began making plans for his retirement
12 months ago when he and partner Lisa bought 404 hectares next door
to the farm he grew up on, now owned by his brother.

But the death of his father, John, last month from cancer on his 75th
birthday, and the birth of son, Billy, four months ago convinced
Reardon that no matter how well he was playing, this season would be
his last.

"I was thinking of going to England, but I don't think I will now,"
Reardon said as he prepared for the Bulldogs opening game against
South Sydney next Saturday.

" I'm still enjoying it but I think I'm just going to go home at the
end of the season.

"I've got a farm there so I go home as much as I can. It's only 3
hours [from his home in Campbelltown] and I look forward to it every
time."

Mason to stay despite feud

By Stuart Honeysett: BULLDOGS chief executive Steve Mortimer
yesterday said he will not be granting his star forward Willie Mason
a release from his contract because of a falling out with coach Steve
Folkes.

Mortimer, who was in Orange in central NSW with Bulldogs chairman
George Peponis for a charity golf day, said he would pull Mason aside
this week to resolve the dispute.

It emerged yesterday the high-profile forward had been dropped for
the first game of the season against South Sydney on Saturday night
because of an attitude problem -- not a quadriceps injury as was
reported by the club.

Mortimer said the situation had been blown out of proportion but
added he backed the judgment of his coach.

"There will be no release," Mortimer said. "I like the bloke and
he'll make mistakes like I did along the way and, I tell you, this is
going to make him a stronger, more resilient, better person.

"I'm going to have a chance to speak to all the boys individually
this week leading up to our first game and I'm 100 per cent behind my
coach.

An excellent weekend for Rugby League

A new Super League attendance record for a round of six matches has
been set this weekend.

61,982 spectators turned out over the weekends matches easily
smashing the previous six match round record of 55,374 set in 2000.

A seven match round record of 62,274 set in 1999 wasn't beaten but
I'm sure that will go before the end of the season.

20,283 turned up at to see Bradfords return to Odsal on Sunday whilst
Warrington and Leeds was delayed by 10 minutes due to crowd
congestion at Wilderspool.

Excellent news this, especially when it's been achieved in rainy
March.

inspirational skipper for Karl Harrison's team.

Alker was the automatic choice to lead the Reds in their quest for an
immediate return to Super League.

Reds football director Steve Simms is quick to heap glowing praise on
Alker for his impressive form.

Simms said: "Mal has been absolutely outstanding. He is a quality
player who leads by example.

"He appears to be far more relaxed and is certainly getting better as
a player.

Leeds 32 defeated Warrington 22

Leeds boss Daryl Powell admitted his relief after watching his side
hold off Warrington to claim a 32-22 Super League win.

The Rhinos led for most of the game but it took a brace of second
half tries from Chev Walker to settle the points.

Powell said: "It was a little scrappy at times, and we had to dig in,
particularly in the first half, after trailing 6-0.

"We also started the second half quite poorly, but I was pleased with
our commitment.

"I am always glad to gain two points at Warrington, and thankfully,
we don't have to come here again.

"Chev Walker had a big game, and Kevin Sinfield has grabbed the extra
responsibility of captaincy very well."

Warrington fought gamely but were ultimately made to pay for the
sending off of prop Nick Fozzard after an incident with Barrie
McDermott late in the first half.

Wolves coach Paul Cullen said: "I didn't see the incident and now
it's up to referees' controller Stuart Cummings.

"However, we were not smart enough, and gifted them the game,
although it is testament to our character that we came back well with
12 men.''

Bradford 22 defeated Wakefield 10

Bradford coach Brian Noble was pleased with his side's Odsal
homecoming as his side staged a late fightback to beat Wakefield 22-
10.

The Bulls rallied from 10-4 down to chalk up their first win of their
Tetley's Super League campaign in front of 20,283 crowd.

It was the club's first game back at their traditional home after two
seasons at Valley Parade. Karl Pratt, Leon Pryce, Lee Gilmour and
Shontayne Hape all crossed for Bulls tries.

Noble said: "It was a big occasion and the fans showed with their
feet where they want rugby league to be played in the city.

"In the first half Wakefield slowed us down and we had a lot of
disruption with injuries, but we played the game at our own tempo in
the second half and there were some big plays from Lee Gilmour, Karl
Pratt and Leon Pryce."

The Wildcats fought hard for most of the game and were only beaten
when Gilmour and Hape went over late on.

Team boss Shane McNally said: "The score didn't accurately reflect
our effort but we showed a lot of discipline and determination which
I am sure will bear fruit in the games ahead."

KELLY: "WIDNES LACKED COMPOSURE"

Widnes' coach Neil Kelly acknowledged his team did not deserve to win
Saturday's Tetley's Super League clash with St Helens.

Saints climbed above Castleford at the top of the table after an
impressive 22-4 derby victory tonight.

And Kelly said: "We lacked composure near the Saints' line but that
was partly due to the fact that we only had one recognised half-back
on the pitch.

"At times I felt we were the better side but need to smarten up.

"We are still looking to strengthen the squad and bring in a stand-
off."

There were no complaints from Saints' boss Ian Millward who
said: "The conditions were tough for both teams but some of the skill
on display was very good.

"Our defence was awesome and Sean Long had an exceptional game.

"Mark Edmondson also played well but we toughed it out and it was an
impressive show."

Brisbane Second Division Rugby League Wrap-up for 8 March

The Brisbane Second Division Rugby League season commenced with a
replay of last years Grand Final in the elite Open 1 grade
competition. This time the result was reversed with Eastern Suburbs
defeating Dayboro 18-14 at Langlands Park.

In other Open 1 matches Aspley beat newcomers Souths Logan 40-10 at
Davies Park, Banyo beat newcomers St Brendans 32-22 in a match which
was transferred to Norths St Josephs field at Virginia while
Rochedale recorded their first win in the top grade 38-24 over
Brothers Juniors.

In the Albert Bishop Shield Grade, last year's Arthur Sparks Shield
premiers, Norths Juniors started with a big win over St Brendans 80-
10. Another Arthur Sparks team from last year, Redlands, also started
well with a 74-4 win over Pine Rivers. Logan Brothers showed that
they should be a contender this year with a 30-28 win over last
year's semi-finalists, Fortitude Valley Juniors, while Rochedale and
Capalaba also recoded first-up wins.

The remaining six grades commence next Saturday, with a full
complement of eight grades playing fixtures.

Brisbane Natives, Northside 3 premiers last year, will step up to
Northside 2 grade in their match against Arana Hills at Arana Hills
at 4.00 PM.

Normanby commence their association with University of Queensland
with matches in Northside 2 and 3 grades at the University fields.

In Southside 3 there is a local derby between Beenleigh Brothers and
Beenleigh Juniors at Bill Norris Oval at 3.00PM. Yeronga and Southern
Cross both return to the competition, after breaks, with home games
in Southside 4.

The Arthur Sparks Shield (Under 20) competition commences with eight
of the nine teams being new to the grade.

Redcliffe Season Launch

Written by Jon Sloan: The Redcliffe Dolphins launched the 2003 season
in fine style at the Leagues Club on Friday night. Club President Des
Webb welcomed everyone to season 2003 and in particular the clubs
sponsors Pepsi, Jupiters Gaming, Redcliffe Leagues, Keystar Motors,
Northstar Mitsubishi, Concept Constructions, Jet Set Travel, Hogs
Breath Café and Leading Edge Sports.

The night started off on a sad note with a minutes silence for
foundation player Keith Howard who passed away during the week. Fox
Sports Mark Braybrook was the MC for the evening and former Dolphin
and Queensland State of origin legend Chris Close was the guest
speaker.

Braybrook interviewed several players on the night including Ben
Jones, Todd Skinner, John Limmer and first grade captain Luke Scott.
Troy Lindsay was announced as club captain for 2003.

Chris Close kept the large crowd entertained with some funny stories
from his playing days and in particular his days at Redcliffe. And he
didnt miss former team-mate Bob Jones or Tosser Turner in his
stories which kept the crowd entertained for 20 minutes or more.

Coach Neil Wharton announced an 18 man squad for the first game
against Easts next weekend and Chris Close presented them with their
jerseys.

Souths: a disgrace

Phil Gould, The Sun-Herald: South Sydney have been a huge
disappointment. Since their return to the NRL competition at the end
of 2001, nothing but drama has come out of the joint and a lot of
supporters of the the Rabbitohs are disgusted at the way they have
handled their affairs on and off the field.

You would think, having been given a second chance to participate in
the elite competition, that South Sydney would have worked overtime
to present a professional and forward-thinking image.

You would like to think they could have capitalised on the euphoria
and emotion surrounding their return to attract a new era of
supporters.

You would think no stone would have been left unturned to create an
image and culture that says "we are the strength of rugby league and
we deserve our place not only in history, but in being a significant
part of the future of this great game".

It was hoped by now Souths would be repaying the thousands of fans
who walked the streets to fight for their cause.

By now you would have envisaged that the people, many of whom risked
their own careers by standing up to a media giant and speaking out
against the treatment handed out to this club and our game, would be
feeling a strong sense of vindication that the pain and treatment
they had suffered was worthwhile.

These people should be able to feel a sense of pride, not only in
their own courage but in the South Sydney club that surely would
emerge from the ashes as a monument to their fight.

Instead, we have been treated to a series of embarrassing on-field
performances, the public airing of damaging psychologist reports,
public admonishment of individuals who dared to question their
professionalism or introduce change, players sacked, the chief
executive sacked, the coach sacked, resignations, boardroom coups,
threats to people inside and outside the club, backstabbing,
political infighting and, during the week, the comical headlines that
revealed what can only be described as a totally laughable management
structure.

Show's over, Folkes

By Danny Weidler, The Sun-Herald: Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes has
left Willie Mason out of first grade for the season opener against
South Sydney this weekend.

Bulldogs star forward Willie Mason is feuding with coach Steve Folkes
and is considering walking out on the club.

Mason is fit to play against Souths in the first round on Saturday
night, but has been left out of the Bulldogs line-up because Folkes
says he has a "bad attitude".

Folkes can still change the side he has named, but if Mason is left
out of first grade in round two he will instruct his management group
AMI to start looking for a new club.

It is understood he is fed up with the way Folkes is treating him and
wants to bring the matter to a head. Teammates are well and truly
aware of the situation he is facing and he isn't alone in questioning
the approach that Folkes is taking.

One of the few clubs with money left under their salary cap is
Cronulla and they made a big play for Mason last year during the
salary cap scandal. Melbourne and rugby union also showed strong
interest.

The news that Mason is restless a week out from the season will rock
the Bulldogs, who have been in the spotlight for the past six months
and were in the headlines again last week when their players were
allegedly involved in an unsavoury incident in Coffs Harbour.

St Helens 22 defeated Widnes 4

St Helens climbed above Castleford Tigers at the top of the Tetley
Super League after an impressive 22-4 derby victory over Widnes.

Widnes were pipped 15-14 by Saints in the corresponding fixture last
year but there was never any chance of a repeat show.

Saints were down to 12 men twice in the game with Anthony Stewart sin-
binned for holding down Deon Bird in the eighth minute and Darren
Smith following for a similar offence on Jason Demetriou five minutes
from time.

Saints were a man short when they went ahead in the 13th minute after
Sean Long darted over and booted the conversion.

Widnes had their chances in the first half but Saints defence held
firm

Saints scored a decisive try early in the second half after Dean
Lawford fluffed his kick and Darren Albert picked up the loose ball
to race almost the full length of the field and open up a 10-0 lead.

Then 19-year old Adrian Gardner notched the first of his two tries in
the 52nd minute to make it 14-0.

Andy Hay was penalised for ball stealing in the 57th minute with Long
booting the penalty.

Widnes had to wait until five minutes from time for their only
touchdown through Hughes.

But there was still time for Saints to cap an impressive night's work
when Gardner touched down in the corner with Long booting the
touchline conversion.

Jack Gibson's role in Tugger demise

SOUTHS chairman George Piggins admits he should have bitten the
bullet and sacked Craig Coleman at the end of last season.

Details emerged yesterday of a conversation Piggins had over dinner
at his south Coogee home with super coach Jack Gibson that virtually
sealed Coleman's fate.

Gibson is a regular visitor to Piggins' house and they are business
partners in the Gardens R Us nurseries.

"The decision about the coach was George's decision and I agree with
him," Gibson told The Sunday Telegraph. "I talked to him about it but
I didn't bore him and he didn't bore me.

"All I told him was 'make a decision'. That's all I said. Make a
decision."

Piggins made a decision, although he admits it probably should have
been made last year.

"If I had my crystal ball and could see that things weren't going to
change in the trials, then, yes, he would have been sacked last
year," Piggins said.

"I offered Craig a job as a development officer last year but he said
he would sue us if he was sacked as coach.

"After three games this year, it's clear something was drastically
wrong and had I known that was going to be the case, Craig wouldn't
have been in charge for those three games."

Gibson, who ironically was sacked as Souths coach after the club
finished ninth out of 12 teams in 1979, defended Piggins.

"It was a decision George had to make . . . it wasn't my decision to
sack him," Gibson said. "You can't time these things. It's like a
divorce. You don't know when it's going to happen. It might jump on
you in the middle of the night.

Lavea's refusal adds to half-back woe at Widnes

By Dave Hadfield: Widnes have failed in a bid for another
international stand-off and have an extra problem at half-back for
today's visit of St Helens with Ryan Sheridan struggling to recover
from a bout of illness.

Having admitted defeat in their attempt to sign Henry Paul from rugby
union's Gloucester, the Vikings lowered their sights to try to
recruit Tasesa Lavea, who played alongside him for New Zealand in the
2000 World Cup, but has had his career blighted by injury since.
Lavea had agreed terms, but has now decided to stay in Australia,
where he has played for Melbourne and the Northern Eagles, leaving
Widnes still lacking in a key position.

Reds copy Bulls' work-ethic

SALFORD City Reds are taking a leaf out of the Bradford Bulls book!

Football director Steve Simms has revealed coach Karl Harrison has
implemented innovative methods and drills used when he worked with
the former Super League world champions.

Salford are clearly benefiting from matching Bradford's
professionalism - Simms says Harrison has transformed the Salford
club and raised levels of professionalism throughout the Reds' camp.
Simms told M.E.N. Sport: "We certainly have adopted the Bradford
style ethic of hard work.

"Rugby league is now treated as your life - the number one concern -
Karl clearly served a good apprenticeship at Bradford.

McRAE TO FIND OUT WHY HULL WERE NOT AT BEST

By Andy Hampson, PA Sport: Hull coach Shaun McRae will be looking for
answers over the coming week to explain his side's below-par
performance against London Broncos last night.

The Airlie Birds, touted as serious Tetley's Super League challengers
this season, were ground down by the Broncos at the rain-sodden
Kingston Communications Stadium and held tryless in a 10-4 defeat.

Nigel Roy pounced for the only try of the game after just five
minutes following a dreadful error by winger Colin Best, who tried to
pass his way out of trouble in his own in-goal area.

After that defences took over with Hull, who enjoyed most of the
possession, constantly frustrated by the Broncos rearguard and their
own inability to retain the ball in difficult conditions.

McRae said: "Based on our performance here, we are a poor team - but
based on the last month, we are not a poor a team.

"There are a few guys here who weren't at the races I'm afraid. A few
of our individuals just weren't there and I can't explain why - I
just know they weren't and they're going to have to explain that
during the week.

Not the best start for Hull

Hull coach Shaun McRae felt London Broncos deserved their victory
after they ground out a 10-4 win at the Kingston Communications
Stadium.

Nigel Roy pounced for the only try of a wet and dreary first Super
League encounter at Hull's new home after a sixth-minute blunder by
Colin Best.

Hull winger Best tried to pass his way out of trouble behind his own
line but the ball went to ground and the home side were unable to
atone for the error.

Two Matt Crowther penalties were all frustrated Hull could muster and
McRae was disappointed that his side could not break the Broncos'
defensive shackles.

He said: "We probably got what we deserved. Our gameplan pretty much
got thrown out of the window and I don't think London's did.

"I think they executed what they had to do pretty well and
unfortunately we fell into the trap of what they were doing and
worried about ourselves.

"We put ourselves under a lot of pressure. We created more
opportunities but I'm not too sure we deserved to win the game
anyway."

Tweed Seagulls begin a new chapter

TWEED Heads Seagulls are preparing for another exciting chapter in
their history after the launch of their first season in the
Queensland State League last night.

A host of dignitaries, including QRL chairman John McDonald, turned
out at Seagulls Leagues Club to welcome the new entity to the
Queensland competition.

He was joined by Dennis Fitzgerald, chief executive of Parramatta
Eels for whom Seagulls are the official feeder club.

Seagulls president Tom Searle said the move into Australia's second
tier rugby league competition, behind the NRL, was an exciting one.

"It is great to be part of history as the first NSW-based team in the
Queensland Cup competition," said Searle.

"We know now with the Parramatta feeder club arrangement we have
confidence from one of the big NRL clubs and once again can give
southern Gold Coast and northern NSW players a pathway into the NRL."

The Gulls kick off their campaign with a local derby against the
Burleigh Bears at Pizzey Park on March 16.

London Broncos 10 defeated Hull FC 4

London Broncos produced a gritty defensive display to frustrate Hull
10-4 as the Super League made a dull first appearance at the Kingston
Communications Stadium.

Hull winger Colin Best gifted Nigel Roy the only try of the game on
just five minutes - after which the Broncos defence simply took over.

The home side were frustrated time after time but could find no way
through the Broncos rearguard, who held firm in the face of driving
rain.

Hull had just two Matt Crowther penalties to show for a lacklustre
effort which left most of the 12,901 crowd far from happy.

Roy claimed the opening score after Best resorted to desperate
measures to clear his own line. He had dealt well with a Tony Martin
kick in his own in-goal area but tried to pass his way out of trouble
as the Broncos applied pressure - and the ball went to ground.

His pass fell well short of full-back Steve Prescott and was
gleefully pounced upon by Roy.

Martin converted, but apart from further penalties from the same man
after 18 and 49 minutes the Broncos rarely extended the Airlie Birds.

Action at the other end was also limited with Hull, despite seeing
plenty of the ball, enjoying little of it in dangerous territory.
Crowther landed both his goals in the first half, but despite small
signs of improvement after the break a try looked beyond them.

The home side did finally start to enjoy some possession in the
visitors' 20 as the game moved into its last half-hour - but still
they struggled to break the Broncos down. Jason Smith tried to create
an opening with a deft kick, but Jim Dymock charged down and the same
man was also on hand to thwart Richard Horne as he dashed for the
line.

The onus remained on Hull to force the pace, but they showed little
sign of breaking through. Their best chance came in the dying moments
when Barnett was within inches of claiming a face-saving try, but the
Broncos held on with little problem to claim their first points of
the new season.

HALIFAX DESERVE RESPECT - TONY ANDERSON

Halifax coach Tony Anderson believes his side deserve respect after
running unbeaten Castleford close in tonight's Tetley's Super League
clash at The Shay.

"Everyone was writing us off at the start of the season. But
Castleford are said to be a top-four side and they have been in a
real game tonight," Anderson said after his side's 20-10 defeat.

"We deserve respect after that performance.

"The effort and commitment was there. But we went away from the game
plan, having controlled the game for long periods, and that caused us
to self-destruct."

Castleford Tigers coach Graham Steadman tipped Halifax to avoid the
drop after seeing his side record back-to-back wins in their opening
two games of Super League for the first time since the competition
started.

"To get four points out of four is very pleasing, and once again it
was our defensive effort which won us the match," he said.

"Halifax are a quality side, and I cannot understand why the pundits
say they are going to struggle this season. I don't think they will
be in the relegation battle."

Steadman was unhappy with scrum-half Mark Lennon's defensive work in
the match and hauled the player off for a period before sending him
back on to set up Wayne Godwin's winning try.

"I do not think it was right to keep him on. But to Mark's credit he
came back on, put things right and set up the match-winning try," he
said.

Wigan 35 defeated Huddersfield 22

A late try from Martin Aspinwall finally made the points safe for
Wigan after newly-promoted Huddersfield staged a second-half comeback.

The Warriors were under early pressure with Great Britain star Kris
Radlinski showing his defensive qualities with a try-stopping tackle
on Alex Wilkinson after a 50-yard run down the left wing.

But they grabbed the opening try after Aussie winger Brett Dallas
popped up in midfield.

He was tackled short but with the Huddersfield cover in disarray,
Sean O'Loughlin spotted the gap to forced his way in..

The Giants were in trouble again when centre Jamie Ainscough snapped
up a loose ball inside his own half.

And the Warriors' speed out wide paid off when Irish winger Brian
Carney raced clear. Full-back Marcus St Hilaire's tackle denied him
the try but Wigan exploited the position with hooker Terry Newton's
long pass sending in Dallas at the corner.

Adrian Lam chipped in with a drop goal to add to Julian O'Neil's two
goals.

But the Giants struck back just before half-time when Wilkinson got a
fingertip to the ball after Darren Turner hacked it over the Wigan
line to close the gap at half-time to 13-4.

The Giants' luck was out when Lam tried a speculative kick which took
a deflection off a Huddersfield player and bounced kindly to the
waiting David Hodgson to give him a simple walk in.

Then Wigan stretched their lead when quick handling by Radlinski and
Lam created the space for Ainscough to crash over wide out.

Huddersfield hit back with tries from Darren Turner and Anthony
Colella, both converted by Brandon Costin, before prop Danny
Sculthorpe settled Wigan's nerves with his first try for the club.

The Giants refused to throw in the towel with Jim Gannon forcing his
way in and Steve McNamara adding the extras, before Aspinwall's late
try finally clinched it.

Castleford 20 defeated Halifax 10

A burst of 12 points in eight second-half minutes was enough to keep
up Castleford's unbeaten start to the season at the expense of
battling Halifax.

Tony Anderson's unfancied Halifax side dominated the first half and
led by 10 points to eight after 50 minutes. But the Tigers had too
much experience and know-how in the second half as they put paid to
the youngest side in this season's Tetley's Super League.

Centre Michael Eagar's penalty gave the visitors a third-minute lead,
but it did not last long as the home side hit back with a neat try by
Dane Dorahy.

The Australian scrum-half spotted a gap in the visitors' defence and
skipped over the line, before adding the conversion.

Anderson's side went on to dominate the first half and should have
scored again on 21 minutes when a powerful run by Andy Hobson took
him to the Castleford line. But as he offloaded Martin Moana tumbled
with the line at his mercy.

The Tigers drew level on 32 minutes when substitute Francis Maloney,
making his first appearance since rejoining the club from Salford,
took advantage of a defence-splitting Ryan Hudson run to score. Wayne
Bartrim added the goal.

Chris Norman's superb cover tackle on Bartrim prevented a certain try
two minutes later. But Dorahy's penalty ensured the sides went in
level at half-time, and his second gave Halifax the lead on 50
minutes.

Castleford wrestled the advantage back again when former Halifax star
Damien Gibson sneaked over in the corner after Darren Rogers had
palmed Bartrim's high kick into his path.

Captain Danny Orr's penalty extended the visitors' lead as the
confidence flooded through the Castleford ranks.

Michael Smith's long pass sent Mark Lennon racing down the field, and
he outstripped the cover before slipping the ball inside to Wayne
Godwin who went over.

Orr's goal wrapped up the win for Castleford - while Halifax's Shayne
McMenemy was placed on report for a high tackle on Gibson to complete
a miserable second period for the home side.

Brisbane Second Division Rugby League Numbers Increase

By Mick Tierney: The twenty-seventh Brisbane Second Division Rugby
League season will be launched, with increased numbers of teams and
clubs, at a function at Crushers Leagues Club on 5 March 2003.

The competition this year will consist of 73 teams from 50 clubs in
six Open grades, the Albert Bishop Shield (Under 22) and the Arthur
Sparks Shield (Under 20). This is an increase of 4 teams and 6 clubs
on the 2002 season. Particularly pleasing is the increase in teams in
the under age grades with 11 teams in the Albert Bishop Shield and 9
in the Arthur Sparks Shield.

Dayboro will defend their premiership in the elite Open 1 Grade, in
which new teams from Brothers Juniors, Rochedale Tigers, Souths Logan
and St Brendans, will join four teams from last year Aspley, Banyo,
Dayboro and Eastern Suburbs in an eight-team competition.

The Leagues major sponsor, Castlemaine Perkins XXXX, and its
associate sponsor, AlphaSports, will both be in their twelfth
consecutive year of sponsorship of the League.

There will be representative matches this year in the Open 1 grade
and the two under age grades.

Souths Logan are the only new club this year, while Albany Creek,
Brothers Juniors, Mustangs, Southern Cross, Southern Suburbs,
Springwood and Yeronga are returning after absences in recent years.

The Open 1 and Albert Bishop Shield grades will commence fixtures on
8 March, while the Northside 2, Southside 2, Northside 3, Southside
3, Southside 4 and Arthur Sparks Shield grades will commence on 15
March. The last Grand Finals for the year will be played on 13

Mondays Question to the Coaching Forum.

Question by Mark Burgess

Could anyone help me set up a stat sheet to help me keep an eye on
what my players are doing though out the course of the game?

I have started one with Hit Ups,Tackles and assists. Is this enough
or do I need more?

Answer by Daryn Reeds

IMO it really depends on what you want to get our of your stats
sheet. Just what are you looking for ?

In any statistical analysis of a sport like RL, it's important to
also remember that stats can hide as much as they show.
For e.g., two FBs... A successfully catches and defuses three bombs,
while B drops one of them.

So you conclude that A is better under the high ball than B ??

Well, on the stats front that'd be right, but what if B's three
attempts were in the rain on a mud bowl with the chasers all over
him, while's A's were as straight forward as you like ?

It clouds the issue somewhat. There is an obsession with tackle
counts, but think about the way you might target the oppositions 5/8.

If he comes off having made 35 tackles does that make him their best
defender ?

Course not, it just means that runners went to him more than any
other defender.

Before deciding what kind of stats you're going to look for, my tip
would be to look for what you seek to find out.

That will tell you what stats to record.

Cheers
Daryn
