Tweed Seagulls begin a new chapter

TWEED Heads Seagulls are preparing for another exciting chapter in
their history after the launch of their first season in the
Queensland State League last night.

A host of dignitaries, including QRL chairman John McDonald, turned
out at Seagulls Leagues Club to welcome the new entity to the
Queensland competition.

He was joined by Dennis Fitzgerald, chief executive of Parramatta
Eels for whom Seagulls are the official feeder club.

Seagulls president Tom Searle said the move into Australia's second
tier rugby league competition, behind the NRL, was an exciting one.

"It is great to be part of history as the first NSW-based team in the
Queensland Cup competition," said Searle.

"We know now with the Parramatta feeder club arrangement we have
confidence from one of the big NRL clubs and once again can give
southern Gold Coast and northern NSW players a pathway into the NRL."

The Gulls kick off their campaign with a local derby against the
Burleigh Bears at Pizzey Park on March 16.

London Broncos 10 defeated Hull FC 4

London Broncos produced a gritty defensive display to frustrate Hull
10-4 as the Super League made a dull first appearance at the Kingston
Communications Stadium.

Hull winger Colin Best gifted Nigel Roy the only try of the game on
just five minutes - after which the Broncos defence simply took over.

The home side were frustrated time after time but could find no way
through the Broncos rearguard, who held firm in the face of driving
rain.

Hull had just two Matt Crowther penalties to show for a lacklustre
effort which left most of the 12,901 crowd far from happy.

Roy claimed the opening score after Best resorted to desperate
measures to clear his own line. He had dealt well with a Tony Martin
kick in his own in-goal area but tried to pass his way out of trouble
as the Broncos applied pressure - and the ball went to ground.

His pass fell well short of full-back Steve Prescott and was
gleefully pounced upon by Roy.

Martin converted, but apart from further penalties from the same man
after 18 and 49 minutes the Broncos rarely extended the Airlie Birds.

Action at the other end was also limited with Hull, despite seeing
plenty of the ball, enjoying little of it in dangerous territory.
Crowther landed both his goals in the first half, but despite small
signs of improvement after the break a try looked beyond them.

The home side did finally start to enjoy some possession in the
visitors' 20 as the game moved into its last half-hour - but still
they struggled to break the Broncos down. Jason Smith tried to create
an opening with a deft kick, but Jim Dymock charged down and the same
man was also on hand to thwart Richard Horne as he dashed for the
line.

The onus remained on Hull to force the pace, but they showed little
sign of breaking through. Their best chance came in the dying moments
when Barnett was within inches of claiming a face-saving try, but the
Broncos held on with little problem to claim their first points of
the new season.

HALIFAX DESERVE RESPECT - TONY ANDERSON

Halifax coach Tony Anderson believes his side deserve respect after
running unbeaten Castleford close in tonight's Tetley's Super League
clash at The Shay.

"Everyone was writing us off at the start of the season. But
Castleford are said to be a top-four side and they have been in a
real game tonight," Anderson said after his side's 20-10 defeat.

"We deserve respect after that performance.

"The effort and commitment was there. But we went away from the game
plan, having controlled the game for long periods, and that caused us
to self-destruct."

Castleford Tigers coach Graham Steadman tipped Halifax to avoid the
drop after seeing his side record back-to-back wins in their opening
two games of Super League for the first time since the competition
started.

"To get four points out of four is very pleasing, and once again it
was our defensive effort which won us the match," he said.

"Halifax are a quality side, and I cannot understand why the pundits
say they are going to struggle this season. I don't think they will
be in the relegation battle."

Steadman was unhappy with scrum-half Mark Lennon's defensive work in
the match and hauled the player off for a period before sending him
back on to set up Wayne Godwin's winning try.

"I do not think it was right to keep him on. But to Mark's credit he
came back on, put things right and set up the match-winning try," he
said.

Wigan 35 defeated Huddersfield 22

A late try from Martin Aspinwall finally made the points safe for
Wigan after newly-promoted Huddersfield staged a second-half comeback.

The Warriors were under early pressure with Great Britain star Kris
Radlinski showing his defensive qualities with a try-stopping tackle
on Alex Wilkinson after a 50-yard run down the left wing.

But they grabbed the opening try after Aussie winger Brett Dallas
popped up in midfield.

He was tackled short but with the Huddersfield cover in disarray,
Sean O'Loughlin spotted the gap to forced his way in..

The Giants were in trouble again when centre Jamie Ainscough snapped
up a loose ball inside his own half.

And the Warriors' speed out wide paid off when Irish winger Brian
Carney raced clear. Full-back Marcus St Hilaire's tackle denied him
the try but Wigan exploited the position with hooker Terry Newton's
long pass sending in Dallas at the corner.

Adrian Lam chipped in with a drop goal to add to Julian O'Neil's two
goals.

But the Giants struck back just before half-time when Wilkinson got a
fingertip to the ball after Darren Turner hacked it over the Wigan
line to close the gap at half-time to 13-4.

The Giants' luck was out when Lam tried a speculative kick which took
a deflection off a Huddersfield player and bounced kindly to the
waiting David Hodgson to give him a simple walk in.

Then Wigan stretched their lead when quick handling by Radlinski and
Lam created the space for Ainscough to crash over wide out.

Huddersfield hit back with tries from Darren Turner and Anthony
Colella, both converted by Brandon Costin, before prop Danny
Sculthorpe settled Wigan's nerves with his first try for the club.

The Giants refused to throw in the towel with Jim Gannon forcing his
way in and Steve McNamara adding the extras, before Aspinwall's late
try finally clinched it.

Castleford 20 defeated Halifax 10

A burst of 12 points in eight second-half minutes was enough to keep
up Castleford's unbeaten start to the season at the expense of
battling Halifax.

Tony Anderson's unfancied Halifax side dominated the first half and
led by 10 points to eight after 50 minutes. But the Tigers had too
much experience and know-how in the second half as they put paid to
the youngest side in this season's Tetley's Super League.

Centre Michael Eagar's penalty gave the visitors a third-minute lead,
but it did not last long as the home side hit back with a neat try by
Dane Dorahy.

The Australian scrum-half spotted a gap in the visitors' defence and
skipped over the line, before adding the conversion.

Anderson's side went on to dominate the first half and should have
scored again on 21 minutes when a powerful run by Andy Hobson took
him to the Castleford line. But as he offloaded Martin Moana tumbled
with the line at his mercy.

The Tigers drew level on 32 minutes when substitute Francis Maloney,
making his first appearance since rejoining the club from Salford,
took advantage of a defence-splitting Ryan Hudson run to score. Wayne
Bartrim added the goal.

Chris Norman's superb cover tackle on Bartrim prevented a certain try
two minutes later. But Dorahy's penalty ensured the sides went in
level at half-time, and his second gave Halifax the lead on 50
minutes.

Castleford wrestled the advantage back again when former Halifax star
Damien Gibson sneaked over in the corner after Darren Rogers had
palmed Bartrim's high kick into his path.

Captain Danny Orr's penalty extended the visitors' lead as the
confidence flooded through the Castleford ranks.

Michael Smith's long pass sent Mark Lennon racing down the field, and
he outstripped the cover before slipping the ball inside to Wayne
Godwin who went over.

Orr's goal wrapped up the win for Castleford - while Halifax's Shayne
McMenemy was placed on report for a high tackle on Gibson to complete
a miserable second period for the home side.

Brisbane Second Division Rugby League Numbers Increase

By Mick Tierney: The twenty-seventh Brisbane Second Division Rugby
League season will be launched, with increased numbers of teams and
clubs, at a function at Crushers Leagues Club on 5 March 2003.

The competition this year will consist of 73 teams from 50 clubs in
six Open grades, the Albert Bishop Shield (Under 22) and the Arthur
Sparks Shield (Under 20). This is an increase of 4 teams and 6 clubs
on the 2002 season. Particularly pleasing is the increase in teams in
the under age grades with 11 teams in the Albert Bishop Shield and 9
in the Arthur Sparks Shield.

Dayboro will defend their premiership in the elite Open 1 Grade, in
which new teams from Brothers Juniors, Rochedale Tigers, Souths Logan
and St Brendans, will join four teams from last year Aspley, Banyo,
Dayboro and Eastern Suburbs in an eight-team competition.

The Leagues major sponsor, Castlemaine Perkins XXXX, and its
associate sponsor, AlphaSports, will both be in their twelfth
consecutive year of sponsorship of the League.

There will be representative matches this year in the Open 1 grade
and the two under age grades.

Souths Logan are the only new club this year, while Albany Creek,
Brothers Juniors, Mustangs, Southern Cross, Southern Suburbs,
Springwood and Yeronga are returning after absences in recent years.

The Open 1 and Albert Bishop Shield grades will commence fixtures on
8 March, while the Northside 2, Southside 2, Northside 3, Southside
3, Southside 4 and Arthur Sparks Shield grades will commence on 15
March. The last Grand Finals for the year will be played on 13
September.

Brian Smith's son lands job with NZRL

By Matthew O'Neill: Rowan Smith, the son of Parramatta coach Brian
Smith will be working with the NZRL after he was appointed as a high-
performance analyst for the Rugby League Foundation.

It's a big opportunity for the 22-year-old and he comes from a good
pedigree with Brian Smith renowned for building good development
bases at clubs he is associated with. Parramatta are one of the
leading junior and country development clubs in the NRL.

Smith will be trying to help with the new talent that comes through
the New Zealand system.

The emergence of Queensland teenager Jonathan Thurston has forced
Australian international Braith Anasta to lock for the Bulldogs'
double-header clash with South Sydney next Saturday. Anasta believes
his future lies at the back of the scrum and coach Steve Folkes has
deemed it time to make the switch, 19-year-old Thurston grabbing the
coveted No.6 shirt. Missing from the squad, as expected, is cult
figure Willie Mason. There was some speculation the Kangaroos
representative would be left out due to form but he said last
night: "I'm not fit to play ... I strained [my leg] at training on
Monday and I haven't run one bit so he [Folkes] said he wouldn't
consider me." Halfback Brent Sherwin is back from a hand problem.

SOUTH SYDNEY

Interim coach Paul Langmack said he found out from three different
sources that the Rabbitohs had flown in former Gold Coast boss Phil
Economidis for an interview on Thursday. "[Chief executive David
Tapp] told me that, he was a bit worried when he was talking to me,"
said Langmack. "I said, 'Tappy, you've got to do your job, mate. I'm
just excited that I've got this challenge against Canterbury'. I
haven't even worried about Phil Economidis or whether they go and
talk to other people. My mate, Brendan Hurst, actually drove him to
the interview. Hursty rang me up and I said, 'I knew in the morning,
Tugger [Craig Coleman] told me'." Langmack said it hasn't been
spelled out to him what results he needs to keep the job and it
doesn't matter. "I don't read the paper or watch the TV - I just
listen to what my mates tell me," he said. "I'm not worried about
that. I just love my football and I want to be successful." Langmack
has picked a 17-man squad for the Bulldogs game but declined to
release it yesterday.


CRONULLA

Hoodoo Guru Dave Faulkner has had a busy week. After reforming his
band to perform at the NRL season launch on Wednesday, he was the
main entertainment at the Sharks corporate launch last night.

MANLY

Former Eagle Andrew King arrived in London this week and is due to
make his debut for the Broncos this morning, Sydney time, in the
Super League game against Hull at the Kingston Communications Stadium.

NORTH QUEENSLAND

Prop David Thompson has described as "shattering" a rib cartilage
injury which seems likely to keep him out of the round-one game
against Canberra. "It doesn't look real good," Thompson said
yesterday. "It's the same thing I did towards the end of last season.
I had a swim today and there was a fair bit of pain, I was pretty
restricted. I'll have the next couple of days off and come back on
Monday and start again."

SYDNEY ROOSTERS

Utility Craig Wing is looking an extremely doubtful starter for
Friday's season opener against Parramatta at Aussie Stadium. Wing
twisted his ankle in the World Club Championship victory over St
Helens and said yesterday: "I only started walking properly again on
Monday and I went for a light jog yesterday. I'm still optimistic."
The Roosters still haven't spoken to coach Ricky Stuart about
extending his contract past this season.

WARRIORS

The Warriors' clash with Canberra in round 11 at Wellington's
WestpacTrust Stadium may be switched to the Friday night to avoid a
clash with rugby union's Hurricanes Super 12 commitments.

WESTS TIGERS

The joint venture side has secured a new shorts sponsor - petroleum
firm JFT Group. Former Socceroo Graham Arnold, meanwhile, has been
tutoring fullback Joel Caine - the last time he helped, in 2000-01,
Caine scored 116 points in the following season.

True league believer Gallop sports the common touch of everyman

David Gallop has managed to unite the ARL and News Ltd halves of the
NRL, writes Roy Masters.

Watching National Rugby League chief executive David Gallop and
Parramatta centre Jamie Lyon speak to school children last month, it
would be convenient to portray them as polar opposites. It would also
be inaccurate.

Gallop, tall, thin and bespectacled, is the son of a Federal Court
judge; Lyon, broad as a used clothing bin, is the offspring of cotton
pickers.

Yet, when they addressed a Wee Waa primary school assembly, their
demeanour was the same - an inherent "I'm not that important"
humility, the instinctive modesty of true league people.

"I'll bet my old man and Jamie's old man could sit down in a pub and
have a schooner and get on," Gallop said. And when he said, "I've
always been a footy fan", you believed him. "I saw Newtown beat St
George one-nil when I was eight," he remembered.

Now into his second year as NRL boss, he has quietly turned apparent
irrelevance into well-rewarded indispensability.

OK, his past job as the code's in-house lawyer meant he probably had
more influence than it looked - but he has united the Australian
Rugby League and News Ltd halves of the NRL like his predecessor,
David Moffett, could not. Moffett, who encouraged people to call
him "Moffo" when NRL top dog, is now Welsh Rugby Union chief
executive and referring to himself as Dai, the Welsh form of David.

Greener pastures in west

By James Hooper: PAUL GREEN has been busy rebuilding. In the southern
Sydney suburb of Caringbah he is working on the house he owns that
burned to the ground in a fire last year.

West of the city he has an equally important project, resurrecting
his NRL career with the Parramatta Eels.

It began last September when Parramatta shed their sixth halfback in
seven seasons, forcing Eels coach Brian Smith to start another off-
season search for a playmaker who could win him a premiership.

Word on the grapevine was Green wanted a new club after the Roosters
signed promising playmaker Brett Finch, so an approach was made from
the Parramatta end about an informal meeting.

Smith and the Rothmans medal-winning halfback then got together for
coffee to see if they could help each other tune into the same
frequency this season.

After an hour-long discussion there were two common themes; the Eels
needed an experienced playmaker and Green needed a new club.

And so, after a season where he lost his home, his possessions, his
position at a premiership-winning club and 30 games of football, Paul
Green feels he is ready to reach his potential.

The type of form he showed when he first emerged on the scene with
Cronulla in the mid 1990s; the type of form that earned him State of
Origin selection for Queensland.

Langmack leads way as heir apparent

By Peter Frilingos: LAST year Paul Langmack walked away from Wests
Tigers after failing to get the first grade gig following Terry
Lamb's departure from the club.

It wasn't a dummy spit, more a realisation that his coaching career
had hit a brick wall and it was time to move on or consider going
back to cooking burgers at Hungry Jacks.

Less than a week after Craig Coleman's sacking his assistant Langmack
is the man again taking centre stage as the heir apparent at Souths.

While Langmack continues to keep a lowish profile there is already
talk of another walk if he is again the bridesmaid.

That position should not be construed as holding a gun to the heads
of the already hard-pressed Rabbitoh directors who have to solve the
coaching conundrum once and for all this time.

However, Langmack's apparent all-or-nothing stance does demonstrate
both his level of commitment to the job and a willingness to back
himself.

In the past the naturally garrulous, even verbose Langmack probably
said too much when he was with Wests as a player then at the Tigers
helping Lamb. Noses were sometimes put out of joint because he said
what he thought.

Cash boost for Swinton Lions

Neil Barker: SWINTON Lions are guaranteed £17,500 from their
Challenge Cup clash with Super League giants Wigan Warriors.

This is the figure that has been agreed to compensate the Lions'
decision to sacrifice home advantage.

Warriors bosses have also agreed to fund the cost of the Swinton
team's travel expenses to the JJB Stadium.

Warriors chairman Maurice Lindsay tabled terms of the agreement after
speaking with Lions officials earlier this week.

M.E.N. Sport can reveal some Lions officials wanted at least
£25,000
up front for switching the tie from Moor Lane.

They were also unhappy at the speed of the deal.

Wigan bosses are still negotiating admission prices at the JJB
Stadium but it is likely to be £12 for adults and £8 for
children and
OAPs.

Lions bosses did everything in their power to stage the match at Moor
Lane and the RFL had a big say in the switch.

Lions will offer free transport to Wigan to supporters. Fans can book
coach places by telephoning 0161 794 6150.

NZRL board is changing

Selwyn Bennett is the new deputy president after he was the only
nominee from the districts. But he has been appointed for just the
one year that was left on the term of retiring deputy Bill Robb.

Director Paul Rosanowski also has one year to serve, leaving three
seats up for vote.

Five-year Kiwi coach Frank Endacott is one of seven people competing
for those spots and should be a shoo-in, who will bring valuable
knowledge of what goes on with the elite teams to the board table.

Also standing are sitting board members Keith Pitman and Bill McEntee
as well as Phil Campbell from Auckland, Andrew Chalmers from Rotorua,
who was co-opted onto the board to replace Robb, Paul Flanagan from
Nelson and Shirley Luke from Canterbury. She would be first woman on
the board should she win selection.

Six applicants for Kiwi coaching job

By PETER JESSUP: The New Zealand Rugby League's deadline for
applications for Kiwi coach passed yesterday with six official
approaches.

The candidates will not to be revealed until Monday, but Warriors
coach Daniel Anderson is favoured.

He was with his team in Mt Maunganui late yesterday and drove to
Auckland for a speaking engagement. He could not be contacted but has
said all week that he has not had time to fully consider the matter.

Nor could club chief executive Mick Watson be tracked down to throw
any light on matters.

Bulls unveil stand sponsorship

BRADFORD Bulls have received a boost as they prepare to return to
Odsal Stadium, with the news that The Pulse radio station will
sponsor the main stand at Odsal.

The stand will be known as The Pulse Main Stand.

The Pulse has been heavily involved with the club since the outset of
Super League and has sponsored the clubs Academy side in recent
years.

Bulls media manager Stuart Duffy, is delighted with the partnership:

We are delighted to have reached an agreement with The Pulse to have
naming rights on our mains stand," Duffy said.

"Over the last few years our relationship with them has grown and
they have always been very supportive and pro active towards the
club. We are sure that both ourselves and The Pulse will derive

In other games tonight, whoever wins between Halifax and Castleford
could go top, while Wigan and Huddersfield are both seeking a first
win.

Halifax remain relegation favourites but were strengthened yesterday
by signing Andrew Frew, a speedy Australian winger, although he will
not be available for three weeks after knee surgery.

They welcome back Daryl Cardiss, who has been out since damaging
cruciate ligaments last June. For Castleford Francis Maloney and Andy
Johnson have recovered from injuries.

Wigan will again be without Andy Farrell, Terry O'Connor and the
banned Paul Johnson at the JJB Stadium, while Hudderfield's squad,
the smallest in the Super League, has been hit by the suspension of
Stanley Gene and Darren Fleary.

Trio vies for last Dragons bench spot

By PAUL SUTTOR: Hoping to stand out,Dragons utility Damien Bower is
one of three players vying for the back-up hooker's position in next
week's season opener against the Wests Tigers.

Three players are jostling for what appears to be the last remaining
spot in St George Illawarra's 17-man squad for next week's season
opener.

One wing spot, the lock's jersey and the back-up hooker's role were
the main positions up for grabs in the pre-season.

Former Wests Tigers winger Hassan Saleh and ex-Penrith lock John
Cross look as though they have won the first two positions after
strong performances in last weekend's trial against Cronulla.

However, there is still no clear favourite to fill the hooking role
while first-choice rake Mark Riddell is off the field this season.

Dragons coach Nathan Brown said rookie Dean Young, last year's First
Division skipper Damien Bower and experienced campaigner Peter Ellis
were the candidates for the bench spot.

NRL keeps Sunday night grand final

Barry Dick: THE NRL grand final will stay in the controversial Sunday
night timeslot despite opposition from some clubs and many supporters.

NRL chief executive David Gallop said yesterday he was aware the
scheduling of the grand final at night was unpopular in Queensland
but "compelling" TV ratings meant the October 5 premiership decider
probably would again start at 7pm.

"It's not quite locked in yet but I've got to say the outstanding
ratings on television and the atmosphere at the ground last year

"This is not an easy one for us and I am aware that people outside
Sydney want to gather for grand final barbecues and the like but at
the end of the day the TV ratings were compelling last year and the
biggest revenue the game gets is from TV rights.

"The atmosphere last year was fantastic and I get the impression the
players like playing at night, too."

The NRL grand final last year was the third most-watched program on
Queensland television and second most-watched in NSW. In both cases,
the grand final finished behind State of Origin league matches.
