Some NRL Club News

Edited by Steve Mascord, SMH
SOUTH SYDNEY
Luckless centre Shane Rigon has been ruled out for up to six months with a
biceps injury. The former Roosters and Bradford utility had tests early in
the week and received the bad news yesterday. Coach Craig Coleman has named
an experimental side for Saturday night's Central Coast Stadium encounter
with Wests Tigers. Aborigines Sevens star Shaun Laurie is at fullback and
the new-look front row consists of Filimone Lolohea, Shane Walker and Frank
Puletua. Souths junior Michael Moran gets his chance at halfback.
BULLDOGS
Chief executive Steve Mortimer yesterday revealed the club was over the
salary cap by up to $50,000 but insisted there was no cause for concern.
Mortimer set tongues wagging when he told Sydney radio station 2KY the club
was "just marginally over" the cap when it met the NRL recently. He said
last night: "It's a matter of thousands of dollars, up to 50, but we will
compensate for it under some of the allowances present in the rules." NRL
chief executive David Gallop said it was "not uncommon" for clubs to be
over the cap at this stage of the year. Halfback Brent Sherwin had 20
stitches inserted in a hand wound yesterday and will miss Friday night's
Country Carnival match with Manly at Coffs Harbour.
CRONULLA
David Peachey, Phil Bailey, Chris Beattie and Dean Treister rejoin the
Sharks' starting side for tomorrow night's Country Carnival encounter with
St George Illawarra at Port Macquarie.
NEWCASTLE
Australian internationals Andrew Johns (back/thigh) and Danny Buderus
(wrist) are on deck for tomorrow's game with North Queensland at Barlow
Park in Cairns. Sean Rudder gets a taste of what could be his future when
he locks the scrum while prop Adam Woolnough is named, despite an ankle
problem, on the bench.
ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA
Tickets went on sale yesterday for the March15 double-header at Telstra
Stadium - Wests Tigers v the Dragons, followed by the Bulldogs v South
Sydney. Seats are going for as little as $15 for adults.
SYDNEY ROOSTERS
The world champions will be without winger Todd Byrne (concussion),
halfback Craig Wing (ankle), skipper Brad Fittler (cut head) and
second-rower Craig Fitzgibbon (shoulder) for Saturday night's tie against
Brisbane. Rookie Lelea Paea has been named on the wing, meaning he has
beaten brothers and fellow Roosters Lopini and Nicky to first grade. Wade
Humpreys takes Michael Crocker's place at rake, Brett Finch is in No.7 and
Chad Robinson starts in the back row. There are plenty of new faces on
Ricky Stuart's bench, too, including Jersey Flegg premiership winners Ian
Henderson and Tevita Metuisela, and Western Suburbs recruit Stuart Webb.
MELBOURNE
Scott Hill's first appearance of the season means Matt Geyer goes from
five-eighth to wing for Saturday night's Country Carnival appointment with
Canberra. Danny Williams is back from suspension to replace Dallas Johnson
at lock. Hill, who had off-season knee surgery, said: "Hopefully I can play
at least 60 minutes which would be good and anything above that would be
great."
WARRIORS
Big Iafeta Paleaaesina has been called into coach Daniel Anderson's
starting side for tomorrow night's trial against Penrith at Homestead Park,
Invercargill. Jerry Seuseu played well enough last weekend to earn himself
a rest.
WESTS TIGERS
Coach Tim Sheens has asked referees coach Robert Finch to look at an
incident from Saturday's Charity Challenge win over Parramatta in which
centre Terry Hill was allegedly elbowed in the head, off the ball. While
it's too late for any action to be taken against the assailant, Sheens
wants authorities to know Hill wasn't the aggressor. "There was an incident
I wasn't happy with. I've put it to Robert and I don't want to go any
further with that publicly," Sheens said.

Warriors to field a strong lineup
Posted Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by <mailto:
rlcm@...>rlcm57
By PETER JESSUP: The Warriors welcome back captain Monty Betham and regular
five-eighth Lance Hohaia for their final pre-season trial in Invercargill
tomorrow and will rest prop Jerry Seuseu because his ability is proved.
The team to face the Penrith Panthers are close to a first-rank side.
Two players will be added to the interchange bench before they fly south on
the morning of the game. Those are likely to be Mark Robinson, who
yesterday signed a deal to play until he takes up his contract with
Northampton in August, and centre John Carlaw, who is yet to have a game
after knee surgery.
Robinson is expected in the north of England on August 1 and until then
will be on a pay-per-play deal for first-grade appearances.
Iafeta Palea'aesina gets his chance to force his way onto the bench for the
season opener against Newcastle at Ericsson Stadium on March 16. The big
prop is yet to regain the form he showed before suffering spleen damage
towards the end of the 2001 season, but looked keen in the trial against
the Sharks last weekend.
The Panthers flew into Invercargill yesterday with a full-strength side.
They beat Newcastle 52-16 last weekend, a result coach John Lang dismissed
as encouraging but meaningless considering the experimental mob the Knights
ran out.
The Panthers conceded an average 30 points a game last year and have been
working on their defence, which will mean a good workout for the
Warriors.<

Kiwi invasion
Posted Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by <mailto:
rlcm@...>rlcm57
By Dean Ritchie: RUGBY league has moved into a union stronghold on the
South Island of New Zealand with a 15,000 sell-out crowd to attend tomorrow
night's trial between the Warriors and Penrith at Invercargill.
League fever has swamped the traditional rugby union city with 13,000
tickets already sold and the remaining 2000 expected to be snapped up early
today.
Interest in league in Invercargill could lead to calls for a second New
Zealand side to be included in the NRL.
New Zealand Warriors official Don Mann told The Daily Telegraph it would be
standing room only.
"The pre-sales are usually only seen when the (Otago) Highlanders Super 12
team play here," Mann said.
"Invercargill is at the opposite end of New Zealand to Auckland so this is
fantastic."
The Penrith-Warriors game - to be played at Rugby Park Stadium - is one of
seven NRL trial matches being played tomorrow night and on Saturday.
NRL chief executive David Gallop is thrilled by the interest the game has
created in Invercargill.
"It is a great crowd for a trial game," Gallop
said.<

Bulldog budget rejected
Posted Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by <mailto:
rlcm@...>rlcm57
By Peter Frilingos: THE Bulldogs have had a salary cap submission designed
to help retain players rejected by the NRL.
NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert refused to allow the club's proposal
involving bonuses to some players should the club qualify for the playoffs
this season.
The bonuses are certain to be incurred and will go into the club's salary
cap for next year.
That means the Bulldogs face a struggle to retain players coming off
contract and stay under the $3.25 million cap.
Last year's $1.6 million salary cap scandal which led to the team being
kicked out of the playoffs has prompted financial belt-tightening by the
club's new management team headed by chairman George Peponis and chief
executive Steve Mortimer.
In the aftermath of the cap drama Bulldogs players agreed to eight per cent
pay cuts to keep the team together for this season.
But with key players Nigel Vagana, Brent Sherwin, Willie Talau, Travis
Norton and Luke Patten coming off contract and the prospect of paying
bonuses the club is looking for ways of cutting costs.
Mortimer said last night rejection of the salary cap submission was not a
major issue.
"It involves at most $80,000 and could be as low as $50,000," Mortimer said

Anderson hints at interest in Kiwis job
Posted Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by <mailto:
rlcm@...>rlcm57
New Zealand Warriors coach Daniel Anderson hinted yesterday he would take
on the Kiwis if the New Zealand Rugby League approached him.
The Kiwi head coach's position has been vacant since Gary Freeman was
effectively axed following a disappointing test series against Great
Britain late last year.
Anderson, who arrives in Invercargill today for a Warriors trial against
Penrith, is seen as an ideal candidate as Freeman's successor after guiding
the Auckland-based team to last year's National Rugby League grand final.
The only questions seem to be whether Anderson wants to double his workload
and, perhaps more importantly, whether the Warriors management will allow
him to.
"I'm just looking at the Warriors, nothing's transpired in any way shape or
form," Anderson said yesterday.
However, the 2002 NRL coach of the year also suggested he could be in the
running, primarily because the job had such a big impact on the Warriors
franchise.
"I'm not divorcing myself from it. The Kiwi coach is going to have a lot to
do with junior rugby league and, invariably, will impact on the Warriors
because we provide a core of the national team."
Warriors chief executive Mick Watson said his board had no problem with
Anderson taking on the Kiwis role

Newcastle has a host of stars back for Friday night's trial against North
Queensland in Cairns including Andrew Johns, but will be without Test
forward Ben Kennedy after he aggravated a hip injury in training.
Bulldogs halfback Brent Sherwin has also fallen foul of injury and will
miss his side's clash with Manly on Friday night in Coffs Harbour after
cutting his hand at training.
The premier Roosters also have their share of injury problems, with captain
Brad Fittler sitting out this weekend's trial against Brisbane with a cut
head and the remnants of the flu, and Craig Fitzgibbon rested.
Craig Wing is also racing the clock to be fit for the club's opening
premiership game and will miss the game against the Broncos.

QRL to investigate
Posted Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by <mailto:
rlcm@...>rlcm57
Queensland Rugby League will investigate if it can take legal action
against a player who was discovered playing in England while serving a
two-year ban from the game.
Peter Petrie was one of three Valleys players in the Toowoomba Rugby League
competition suspended by the QRL Drugs Judiciary Tribunal last year for
steroid use.
But he has been found playing this season for the second division English
club Gateshead Thunder under an assumed name.
His Valleys premiership-winning coach Peter Ryan is also his coach at
Gateshead and is in the QRL's firing line as well.
QRL managing director Ross Livermore will seek legal opinion on what action
can be taken against Petrie and Ryan, who would have known the 25-year-old
front rower was a suspended player.

see if there is any reaction."
New loan signing from Leeds, Andrew Kirk, is cup-tied and misses the trip

ELLIS WANTS WARRIORS TO SUFFER
Posted Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by <mailto:
rlcm@...>rlcm57
By Ian Laybourn, PA Sport: Doncaster aim to pile on the agony for Wigan
when the Powergen Challenge Cup holders visit their 'House of Pain' on Sunday.
The Warriors suffered a surprise defeat at Castleford in the opening game
of the new Super League season and lost skipper Andy Farrell and fellow
second rower Mick Cassidy through injury and Great Britain centre Paul
Johnson because of suspension.
All of a sudden, what appeared to be a routine-looking fifth-round tie has
taken on new significance and Doncaster's charismatic coach St John Ellis
believes the holders have every reason to be wary.
"I think people are looking at our game more, with Wigan losing at the
weekend and us going to Featherstone and winning," said Ellis. "They are
anticipating an upset.
"One of the most influential things in our favour is that Farrell is out -
he's a key player and so is Johnson. I think he's a great
player."<

FRANK HYDE TO BE HONOURED BY NEWTOWN AND NORTHS.
Posted Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by <mailto:
rlcm@...>rlcm57
Two of Australias foundation Rugby League clubs, Newtown and North Sydney,
have agreed to permanently honour a living Sydney legend who played with
distinction for both of the 1908 clubs.
The Newtown Jets and the North Sydney Bears are proud to announce the
institution of the Frank Hyde Cup, which will be competed for by both clubs
on an annual basis. The Cup honours Frank Hyde, the living Australian
treasure who played with Newtown from 1934-1937, and with North Sydney from
1942-1943. Frank of course progressed from his playing days to an
outstanding career in broadcasting and the media. He remains an admired and
respected Elder Statesman of Rugby League, and an iconic figure with both
Newtown and Norths.
These two old clubs have had some sterling battles over the past 95 years,
and are now lynchpins of the flagship competition of the NSW Rugby League,
the NSW Premier League. Both clubs now play out of their traditional home
grounds, Henson Park and North Sydney Oval, and jointly endorse the
inauguration of the Frank Hyde Cup as a consolidation of their rich traditions.
The first encounter in the showdown for the Frank Hyde Cup in 2003 will
take place at Henson Park on 8th March, when Newtown hosts North Sydney in
a NSW Premier League trial match, kicking off at 5 pm. The clubs have
agreed that this trial should count towards the awarding of the Frank Hyde
Cup in 2003.
Both club coaches, Colin Murphy (Newtown) and Gary Larson (Norths), are
totally supportive of the new Cup competition, saying that it will add an
historical dimension to the strong competitive traditions of both of these
proud old clubs.

Knights, Bulldogs suffer Mad Monday
Posted Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by <mailto:
rlcm@...>rlcm57
Newcastle and the Bulldogs have suffered a bout of pre-season Mad Monday,
with both sides incurring big-name training injuries.
The Knights will roll out their stars for their final hit-out of the
National Rugby League pre-season in Cairns on Friday night, but Test
forward Ben Kennedy will be missing after aggravating a hip flexor injury
in training.
Kennedy is expected to return for the club's opening premiership game
against the New Zealand Warriors at Ericsson Stadium on March 16, but will
go into that match without any pre-season form.
"The only exclusion in the short term is Ben Kennedy, who aggravated his
hip flexor on Monday," Hagan said.
"Long term, he should be alright for the start of the competition. Ideally,
it would have been good if he could have started a game but if you take the
positive outlook he is not going to miss any competition games which is
when the points start."
Robbie O'Davis, Matthew Gidley, Andrew Johns, Josh Perry, Danny Buderus,
Matt Parsons and Steve Simpson were named in the Knights' side for the game
against North Queensland after missing last weekend's trial loss to Penrith.
In Kennedy's absence, Hagan has named Sean Rudder at lock with Kurt Gidley
to start in the No.6 jersey.
"I think we have a bit of flexibility there," Hagan said. "Nothing has been
resolved."
The Bulldogs also suffered some Monday blues this week and will be without
halfback Brent Sherwin for their trial against Manly on Friday night after
suffering a freak accident at training which required 20 stitches.
Sherwin was involved in plyometrics session with his teammates, but things
went wrong when he swung his arm and collided with a box being used for
training.
The 24-year-old halfback is expected to be fit for the club's opening
premiership game against South Sydney on March 15.
Coach Steve Folkes again named two sides for the match against the Sea
Eagles in Coffs Harbour, with Corey Hughes to wear the No.7 jersey for both
halves.
Manly coach Peter Sharp has named a strong side, with Luke Dorn playing
halfback and partnering Ben Walker with Jason Ferris sidelined.
Test lock Scott Hill will make his first appearance of the season for
Melbourne against Canberra in Morwell, Victoria on Saturday after
recovering from knee surgery.
Hill has been named at five-eighth by coach Craig Bellamy, but is not
expected to play the entire match.
"I'm not expecting a great deal from myself at the moment as my fitness
still has a way to go," Hill said. "I've been getting through training
alright but it's games like this that you look forward to in order to get
some match fitness."
Danny Williams also returns after missing last weekend's win over South
Sydney through suspension while young centre Billy Slater retains his place
in the centres.
And the Sydney Roosters will be without captain Brad Fittler, Test forward
Craig Fitzgibbon and his Australian teammate Craig Wing for their game
against Brisbane in Toowoomba on Saturday.
Fittler had 30 stitches inserted in a head wound he suffered during the
World Club Challenge while coach Ricky Stuart is nursing Fitzgibbon through
the pre-season after he underwent off-season shoulder surgery.
Wing is still in doubt for the start of the premiership after suffering an
ankle injury in the Roosters' WCC win over St Helens.

David Allen: Leeds Rhinos have named a strong team for their Senior Academy
Championship opener as Castleford Tigers on Thursday night, with Willie
Poching and Chris Feather included in the 17.
The Under-21's are allowed to field two over-age players this year, and the
Rhinos allow Poching to gain some match fitness following his return from
close season knee surgery.
Feather joins fellow first team squad members Richard Mathers, Dwayne
Barker, Ewan Dowes, Jason Netherton and Jamie Jones-Buchanan in the team.
Loan duo Joe Mbu and Danny Thomas, who are at the club on a long-term deal
from London Broncos, are on the bench for the game, which kicks off at
7.30pm at The Jungle.

Bulldogs look to season out of doghouse
Posted Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by <mailto:
rlcm@...>rlcm57
Talking to Braith Anasta and Willie Mason, you'd swear the Bulldogs are
certainties to win this year's National Rugby League premiership.
"Gaining Andrew Ryan, I think we've got the best forward pack in the comp,"
said bulked-up five-eighth Anasta.
Mason disagreed: "I'd probably go the opposite and say we've got the best
backline in the comp."
So with the best backline and forward pack, will they better last year's
17-match winning streak?
"The expectation is that something like that will happen but in reality
it's going to be far more difficult to have that sort of success throughout
the whole season this year than it was last year," said a cautious Bulldogs
coach Steve Folkes.
"We'll need to improve because everyone else will."
Still, it's easy to see why the Bulldogs are short-priced favourites to win
the competition, ahead of defending premiers Sydney Roosters and Brisbane.
They have a strong squad with plenty of depth, boasting five current
internationals (four in the backline) and a pack spearheaded by Mason and
featuring workhorses Mark O'Meley and skipper Steve Price.
At least the players will be able to focus on football in 2003, having put
behind them the darkest period of the club's history.
They just want to forget about last year's salary cap scandal when the NRL
fined the Bulldogs $500,000 and docked them 37 competition points

now been told that he will need a full reconstruction.
That was only his second match since recovering from surgery on his

GROUP 10 hopefuls have a chance to shine against Penrith
Posted Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by <mailto:

By David Miller
Wednesday, 26 February 2003
RUGBY LEAGUE
GROUP 10 hopefuls will be able to push their selection claims in a trial
against Penrith's Jim Beam Cup side at Carrington Park, Bathurst, on
Friday, March 7.
Group 10 will use a mix of first graders and under 21s for the trial, which
will be played in four 25-minute quarters.
Following the trial Group 10 will finalise first grade and under 21 squads
for matches against Group 20 in West Wyalong on Saturday, April 12.
"This trial is really to give everyone who's turned up (to training) an
equal run and an opportunity to show what they can do,'' Group 10 first
grade coach David Scott said yesterday.
Selectors will mix first graders and under 21s in two sides who will
alternate each quarter.
"We could put a side on that's going to be first grade and then under 21s
but I think it (mixing the sides up) will make it better for the junior
blokes,'' Scott said.
"We're going to have Warick Colley lead the first side which will contain
Kip Maranda and Stanley Latu as the front rowers and then we'll have Craig
Wallace lead the second side.
"We'll probably put an old bloke, young bloke (together) so that they can
get a fair bit of experience and learn from the older blokes what it takes
to play that sort of football.''
Scott said Group 10 jumped at the chance to play the Panthers, who will
field ex-Bathurst Panthers George Rose and Anthony Farrah.
"The more games we get in the better for two reasons: one, it gets everyone
playing together and gives cohesion and, two, it gives these blokes equal
opportunity,'' Scott said.
"They can't just say we only had 10 minutes to show we should have been in
the side. They're going to have 100 minutes of football so at least
everyone's going to have 50 minutes of football, instead of say playing in
a knockout with a 10 each-way sort of thing.''
Group 10 will prepare for the match with a training session at Kelso next
Wednesday at 6pm.
