RLCM Comment

Broncos v Bulldogs

By Gary Roberts at Carrara

The Broncos and the Bulldogs gave indications at Carrara Stadium on
Saturday evening before an enthusiastic crowd of 13,952 that NRL
season 2003 will be business as usual.

Both sides stepped into the arena on a greasy pitch, the Bulldogs
trailled two teams of quality players the Broncos went with nineteen.

The game was played at a fierce pace, with both teams earning the
metres gained. Both coaches were happy with the pace of the game, but
more importantly both teams came out of the game without injuries.

Steve Mortimer Bulldogs CEO said “ Although this game was only a
trial, it was a high quality game, the first half went to the
Bulldogs and the second half it went to the Broncos, but from our
point of view it allowed coach Folkes the opportunity to blood a few
new guys and see if they are up to the game at this level in their
defence and attack, and two rookies did impress Jonathon Thurston and
Roy Asotasi.

“Thurston is a real spark and you can expect to see a lot more of
him in the Blue and White jumper in the many years to come while the
Broncos found it hard to contain Asotasi.” he said

Broncos coach Wayne Bennett would have been particularly happy with
an effective kicking and the re-emergence of a Bronco’s passing
game.

Although there was some dropped ball by the Broncos in the first half
it was pleasing to see that they were prepared to spread it. They did
make mistakes but the majority were in the oppositions half.

Bennett was questioned whether the spreading the ball was due to the
trial status of the game or can spectators expect to see more of the
flair that was a trademark of their game during the 90’s.

He answered, “ We have to change our game a little bit, the game
is changing all the time and now there is confidence in the team and
that confidence allows them to pass more. We always have been in
favour of passing the ball, but sometimes it depends on the quality
of the player. It is always something that we are working on, but it
takes time to come to fruitation.

“I am not saying we are going to throw it around more, we were
full of errors in that first half, we hardly completed a set, but in the
second half the pass stuck a little more.

“A teams ball movement is controlled by the defence, so I am not
saying that we are going to go out and throw the ball around all
season because we won’t be.

“Our first priority will be to maintain the ball as long as we
can, without making unforced errors, but if we can play with a little bit
more flair I would like it to happen, “he said

Returned player Tonie Carroll and new boy Richard Swain both had
impressive games and both will bring their special skills to the
Broncos in 2003.

Bennett said, “Swain is certainly going to help us, he will put
the opposition under a lot more pressure. All of a sudden we have an
option there, he is going to worry a lot of teams. His style helps a
team to play wider in attack and the opposition’s defence is not
sure where you are coming from.

“I am really pleased with Tonie Carroll, it is great to have him
back and he will get better for us. He is a really good player he does
things well, there is a bit of class about him.

The Broncos finished the trial in best fashion and Bennett gave a one
liner that up and coming coaches should jot down somewhere, he
said, “We had the momentum and football is still about
momentum”.

The Bulldogs fielded two teams, one for each half and their tenacity
and trademark defence was evident in both halves. The Dogs speed off
their line is a strong point with their defence and is something that
most coaches at all levels should study and learn from.

Steve Folkes said he thought the game was excellent for so early in
the year and found it interesting that both teams could go at each
with such a high standard of intensity so early in the year.

He felt that his team fell away in the second half when their
communication was not effective. Realising that he has plenty of
players of first grade quality he was happy to give all players a run
so they could give themselves every chance to impress before the
first NRL game against South Sydney.

Folkes backed up Steve Mortimer’s thought on the rookies Asotasi
and Thurston

Asotasi who previously has had trouble in keeping up with the pace of
the game, last night played for 30 minutes in the first half and is a
big, strong player with potential. Folkes said that he feels Asotasi
is now coming to grips with the pace of first grade.

Of Thurston’s playing position in the team he said, ”Jonathon
is a talent and his position will be determined by where Braith Anasta or
Travis Norton play or whatever the mix of the team may be. He certainly is
a talent and could play in any first grade side.

RLCM Brief Summary

Broncos 32 defeated Bulldogs 18

There were 84 Plays in the game.

First Half 48 Plays

Dogs 26 Plays – Broncos 22 Plays

Second Half 36 Plays

Bulldogs 16 Plays – Broncos 20 plays

Both teams are extremely fit for this time of the year.

The Broncos kicking and containment of the Bulldogs on early tackles
was superior.

The Broncos came out of their own end better.

The majority of errors made by the Broncos were not a big concern as
they were down the other end of the park, except for four in the
first half they were well away from their red zone.

The ‘Play the Balls’ by both sides averaged approx 3-4
seconds the
only exception was the big players 4-6 seconds.

The Broncos teamwork will improve further as the team moulds as a
unit. Lateral running could cause problems in their own end.

The Bulldogs will develop as the season progresses into a Premiership
treat as the first grade squad comes together.

EXTRACT FROM RLCM BOOK 29

The Physchology of Winning - How to Develop a Winning Attitude in
Rugby League.

By Wayne Goldsmith

Grand Final Day.

The team gathers in the locker room. This is an intense,
high pressure environment that few experience and
even fewer survive. A former player – one of the
nation’s greatest - walks into the changeroom. There
is a respectful hush as he starts to speak.

He talks about pride.
He talks about spirit.
He talks about commitment – about attitude.
He talks about winning – the history of the club in
Grand Finals.

With tears in his eyes he begins to recite the names of
the great players who have gone before.
He asks players to stand and link arms and to join him
in the Club song.

He has done a great MOTIVATIONAL TALK.

This is the perception many people have about the
word motivation as it applies to high performance
sport: a one off emotion charged lecture from a
professional speaker or motivator or sports
psychologist.

Effective motivation is not a one off talk by a high
powered speaker. It is not the promise of a present or
gift or bag of money. It is not a single temporary burst
of emotion.

Effective Motivation is a lifestyle. Motivated people
live a lifestyle where they are motivated to achieve
excellence in everything they do. Every task, every
activity, every challenge is an opportunity to set a goal,
to try something new and to achieve..................more

RLCM - NEWS UPDATE 24/02/03 -

Daniel Anderson can have the Kiwi coaching job

By PETER JESSUP: Daniel Anderson can have the Kiwi coaching job if he
wants it but Warriors' majority owner Eric Watson is the man likely
to have the final say on whether he gets it.

The New Zealand Rugby League will this week release details of its
new coaching contract and expects applicants to make themselves
known - it won't be approaching anyone up-front.

But the board has agreed on a scenario where a candidate "heads and
shoulders" above all others would be given the position outright,
without reference to a selection panel that is also in the making
should no such candidate appear.

That's a thinly-veiled cover for an invitation for the NRL coach-of-
the-year of 2002 to put his hand up and be crowned...

Terry Hill sorry for brawl

By TONY ADAMS: VETERAN Wests Tigers centre Terry Hill has apologised
to coach Tim Sheens for his role in Saturday night's spiteful trial
against Parramatta.

Hill's return to football after an absence of nearly 12 months was
marred by two punch-ups with Eels forwards in a fiery encounter.

Sheens was delighted with the Tigers' upset win but far from pleased
with the lack of discipline showed by his players.

"It's an area we definitely need to improve in," Sheens said.

Sacked Kemble taking legal action against NZRL and Warriors

Former Kiwi Gary Kemble is taking legal action against the New
Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) and the Warriors club after losing his
top-level development job.

Kemble, 46, headed the Rugby League Development Foundation a joint
venture between the NZRL and the Warriors but was told he was no
longer needed late last year.

A veteran of 19 tests at fullback, Kemble was unavailable for comment
yesterday, as were spokespeople for the NZRL and the Warriors.

NZRL chairman Sel Pearson told TV's 3 News he would not discuss the
matter until after a formal mediation session with Kemble on
Wednesday.

Former Kiwis coach Frank Endacott was disappointed that the sport
would lose an excellent coach.

"I just believe we discard our top coaches far too easily in New
Zealand," Endacott said.

"I just go back to the last game at Ericsson Stadium last year when
the Warriors beat the Wests Tigers. Eight or nine of those blokes
came through Gary's hands in the development team. That's testament
to what he's done."

Former NZRL chief executive Gary Allcock was shocked to hear of the
departure.

"Gary Kemble has been a fine servant of New Zealand league and to
have him treated like this is unbelievable," Allcock told the Sunday
News.

"Gary was sent to the UK on a Prime Minister's scholarship to look at
their development strategies and see how we can improve things in New
Zealand.

"Then just before Christmas he learns he has no job."

Nathan Long to miss start of year

MANLY forward Nathan Long will miss the start of the National Rugby
League season after dislocating his shoulder in last night's trial
loss to North Queensland.

Long, who will have further tests tomorrow, is expected to be out for
six weeks.

Manly has the bye in the opening round, meaning Long would only miss
two games if his recovery goes according to schedule.

That would see him back in action for the club's round four game
against Wests at Brookvale Oval.

Sea Eagles captain Jason Ferris (rib cartilage) and centre Albert
Torrens (knee) are also unlikely to play in the club's final trial
against the Bulldogs next weekend after suffering injuries during
last night's 20-12 loss in Mackay.

However, both should be fit for the club's premiership opener against
the Cowboys on March 22.

Manly coach Peter Sharp said he wasn't overly concerned by his side's
indifferent trial form, which includes losses to Parramatta and North
Queensland.

"We have a bit of work to do but we're not worried about it," Sharp
said.

"We're just adjusting to the referee and the new interpretations of
the rules."

Youngsters Jason King and Chad Randall were the standouts for the Sea
Eagles last night, with the former staking an early claim to be
included in Phil Gould's preliminary 30-man NSW squad, to be named in
April.

"King is a fine player. He'd be OK in that environment," Sharp said.

Bobbie Goulding issues come and get me plea

BOBBIE Goulding is ready to come in from the cold!

A new Super League season has just kicked off, the national league is
well underway yet Goulding is the man without a club.

He finished last season as a beaten Grand Finalist with Leigh who
missed the opportunity to go in Super League.

New men came in at Hilton Park and took charge - forcing the former
Great Britain scrum-half to move on.

It looked at one stage as if Warrington could come in. Hometown team
Widnes have also been linked with the man who was Salford captain
this time last year.

Goulding still believes he could offer plenty to the game yet a
future role is likely to be in a coaching capacity.

He said: "A player-coach role in the national league could well
appeal. All I can do is wait and see what happens."

At his peak Goulding was regarded as one of the world's best half-
backs. He was part of the all-conquering Wigan team of the 1980s and
regards it an honour to have been part of one of the Warrior's
greatest ever decades.

Goulding acknowledges the game has changed but feels modern
superstars Paul Sculthorpe and Adrian Morley would not have been out
of place in that great Wigan side.

Goulding adds: "Sculthorpe is a wonderful player, so vital to Saints.
So too is Morley. He has certainly benefited from playing in
Australia and is extremely powerful.

"They really are exceptionally talented players."

Castleford 19 defeated Wigan 10

Two tries in the last five minutes by Darren Rogers and Waine Pryce
sent Castleford roaring into the new Super League season with a 19-10
defeat of Wigan on Sunday.

Rogers grabbed his second touchdown to put the Tigers ahead before
Pryce went over in the dying seconds to seal victory as the home side
bounced back from their Challenge Cup defeat at Wakefield.

Wigan's misery was compounded when centre Paul Johnson was sent off
in the 78th minute for a high tackle on Castleford's Jamie Thackray.

Leeds Rhinos 32 Widnes Vikings 12

By PA Sport Staff: Mark Calderwood grabbed a hat-trick of tries as
Leeds cruised to victory over bogey side Widnes.

It was an impressive performance from the Rhinos, who look much more
powerful this season, while Widnes will be heartened by their first-
half performance although they hardly threatened after the break.

Fears that the Vikings, with six former Rhinos in their line-up,
might repeat last season's double over Leeds were soon dispelled and
if the Rhinos had landed their kicks - they failed with six out of
eight - the score would have been even more emphatic.

Halifax Blue Sox 26 defeated London Broncos 22

Halifax upset the odds to begin their Super League campaign with an
unlikely but well-deserved win over London Broncos at Griffin Park.

Tony Anderson's side took full advantage of the notoriously slow-
starting Broncos to claim what could prove a valuable two points from
an error-strewn but closely-contested game.

Hull 28 defeated Wakefield 14

Hull's much-fancied side were made to work hard for their first
points of the new Super League season by Wakefield at Belle Vue where
they triumphed 28-14.

The Airlie Birds led just 10-8 at half-time and only Craig
Greenhill's 65th-minute try calmed the nerves of the huge Hull
following.

Hull full-back Steve Prescott had set the crowd alight by completing
his hat trick in the 47th minute and with Matt Crowther converting to
make it 16-8 and it should have been all over.

But scrum-half Paul Handforth darted in from the base of a scrum on
55 minutes for a try converted by Ian Knott which cut the gap to just
two points.

Greenhill's try killed off home hopes however, and Crowther's
conversion and 70th-minute penalty secured the hard-earned victory.
Visiting centre Toa Koa-Love put the icing on the cake with the
team's fifth try four minutes from time.

Hull looked to have the first half stitched up by the 25-minute mark.
Having controlled the play throughout the first quarter Hull were
rewarded with two tries in four minutes, scored by former Wakefield
full-back Prescott ..more from Ananova

Storm flood Rabbitohs

MELBOURNE Storm served notice they are on target for a solid start to
the NRL season after thrashing South Sydney 44-24 in Ipswich last
night.

Playing in their first official trial, the Storm were primed for a
stout performance. Whether they were trying to impress new coach
Craig Bellamy or simply dust off the cobwebs, they definitely came
north to play.

Storm forwards, led by Rodney Howe and Robbie Kearns, took it to the
brittle Rabbitohs defence. Their powerful runs helped Storm power to
an 18-0 lead after 16 minutes.

With halfback Matt Orford calling the shots the Storm were just too
strong and classy for the Rabbitohs, who must be a concern for coach
Craig Coleman.

West Tigers 26 defeated Parramatta 10

Sheen's Tigers roll Eels

TIM Sheens was definitely the best man at Campbelltown last night
after guiding his new Wests Tigers team to an upset win over
Parramatta.

But Sheens could not perform a similar role at his son Matthew's
wedding in Canberra, missing the big event in favour of the game.

Moments after fulltime, Sheens sped out of the ground and drove to
Bankstown, where he hired a light plane for a quick dash to attend
the reception. He would have been delighted with the Tigers' five
tries to two win.

"The wedding was planned a fair time ago, but so was the trial and
Tim knew he needed to be here," said Sheens' close friend and Tigers
trainer Brian Hider.

"He will still get there for the best part the celebration with the
family.

"And it will be all the more sweet after the boys played so well
tonight."

In a spiteful affair, the Tigers had too much determination and
commitment for a disappointing Eels outfit, finishing convincing
winners.

And leading the way was veteran centre Terry Hill, playing his first
match in nearly 12 months.

Field of my dreams

By Phil Gould, SMH: The St George Illawarra Dragons made a lot of
people happy when they announced they were returning to their
traditional home ground at Kogarah Jubilee Oval this season.

However, the community appeal for funds for a much-needed ground
improvement program has stalled and the club urgently requires a
further $500,000 to complete the first stage of the refurbishment.

The Jubilee Oval Community Appeal was launched last year needing to
meet a $1.85million target to upgrade facilities at the famous old
ground. So far, the major funds have come from the NSW Government
($800,000), St George Leagues Club ($400,000) and Kogarah Council
($140,000), with the balance to be raised from Dragons supporters and
the community.

Dragons promotions and fundraising manager Frank Bates said during
the week: "We really need the community, Dragons supporters, sporting
groups and businesses in the St George district to kick in the
remaining $497,500 before the end of April to ensure stage one of the
project is complete on time."

So come on, Saints fans, let's get this thing happening!

Unfit Craigie vows: I am off the booze

By Danny Weidler, SMH: Talented but erratic Souths five-eighth Owen
Craigie has sworn off the drink for the rest of the season and has
begun training with three personal trainers, including coach Craig
Coleman's father-in-law.

And, in an amazing endorsement, Chris Walker, Souths' key recruit
from Brisbane, has said Craigie is as naturally talented as Darren
Lockyer and Andrew Johns.

Craigie weighed 105.9 kilograms - six kilograms too much - when he
arrived at Souths' training and found himself out of the first-grade
squad.

Now he has admitted for the first time that it was alcohol that
pushed him over the weight limit, and said he is determined to stay
off the drink until the season finishes.

"To be honest, it was drink rather than food that put me over the
weight," he said.

"I love a drink, a beer at the end of a day, and I just drank too
often and I can't do that as a professional footballer, simple as
that.

Broncos turn back the clock in first up win

The Brisbane Broncos have defeated the Bulldogs 32-18 in a
scintillating performance in tonights trial at the Gold Coasts
Carrara Stadium.

It was only a trial, but one couldnt help but be impressed with the
performance of the Broncos, who defended stoutly and appear to be
taking a step back to the attacking heyday of Langer, Renouf and
Carne.

It was a performance that would have pleased coaching staff and fans
alike, as a Broncos side facing two Bulldogs teams, in poor
conditions and without their two starting props outplayed last
seasons standouts at both ends of the park.

Skipper Gorden Tallis, forwards Dane Carlaw, Brad Meyers an Neale
Wyatt were devastating in both attack and defence, while backline
members Darren Lockyer, Tonie Carroll and the returning Ben Ikin were
solid in both aspects of play.

In a rugged first forty minutes, it didnt take long for either side
to realise that the football season was genuinely back.

St Helens 46 - 22 Bradford

Andy Wilson at Knowsley Road, The Guardian: "Never write off St
Helens," has become a Super League cliche as tired as big hits, dumb
football and "the best season ever". But that does not make it any
less true.
Saints were there to be shot at for the first game of their latest
title defence last night, after their 38-0 humiliation by the Sydney
Roosters in last Friday's World Club Challenge, and against a
Bradford team thirsting for revenge after last October's
controversial grand final defeat.

SAINTS LEARN FROM ROOSTERS ROASTING

By Andy Hampson, PA Sport: St Helens coach Ian Millward believed his
side had learned from last week's thrashing by Sydney Roosters as
they inflicted similar misery on Bradford tonight.

The champions opened Super League VIII in explosive fashion as they
destroyed rivals Bradford 46-22 at Knowsley Road.

Saints were at their most exhilarating best as they swept eight tries
past the Bulls to emphatically deny them the chance of revenge for
last season's Grand Final loss.

It was the perfect response from Saints after their disappointing 38-
0 reverse at the hands of the Roosters in the World Club Challenge at
the Reebok Stadium last week.

Millward said: "We have clearly learned a lot from last week.

The Gold Coast is Galloping ahead

THE movers and shakers of the National Rugby League concede it is a
matter of when rather than if a Gold Coast team will be awarded a
place in the competition.

NRL big hitters are ready to welcome any application from an existing
club to relocate to the Coast in the wake of exceptional trial crowds
at Carrara Stadium in the past month.

Even Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett has publicly thrown his weight
behind a team on the Coast as his Broncos prepare to do battle with
the Bulldogs at Carrara tonight.

After crowds of 12,000 and 15,000 to trials so far this pre-season -
with only the weather a chance of stopping those figures being
eclipsed tonight - the Gold Coast Bid Team is stepping up work on the
plan to attract a team from interstate.

The Coast fervour has given added fervour to the Bid Team's
submission - which NRL chief executive David Gallop first saw last
year - with a relocation considered more than possible.

"If a club came to us and said they would be interested in
relocating, we would be very interested," said Gallop.

"I have heard good things and am excited by the interest the matches
are creating there.

"It is pretty compelling stuff when you are analysing the support for
rugby league in an area.

"We were already impressed with what they (the Bid Team) had shown
us. But packing the joint when our teams play there is a huge factor."

Bennett said the crowds had shown the Coast is ready to start
planning in earnest, rather than the previously-mooted second team in
Brisbane.

"The fans are showing that down on the Gold Coast they are starved of
footy, and showing up in numbers," he said.

"They need to give them a couple of years and say you are going to be
part of the competition.

"Give them some concessions and help them, instead of 'we want you
but you are in the same boat as everyone else."

Bid Team members Paul Broughton and Parramatta trial promoter Michael
Searle will travel to Sydney in May to showcase their relocation idea
to each club.

"We may not get any positive answers then, but by the end of 2003
relocation may seem a viable option to some clubs, rather than
extinction," said Broughton.

Bennett predicts contracts for kids

BRONCOS coach Wayne Bennett says it is a matter of time before NRL
clubs start signing 12-year-olds to binding contracts.

The Queensland State of Origin coach, one of the most respected
voices in the game, called for the introduction of an external draft
and said the greatest challenge facing the Broncos this year would be
coming up with an effective halves combination.

He said clubs were so keen to tie up young talent it would not be
long before parents were being approached with lucrative contracts
for boys as young as 12.

"When I started in this business 16 years ago we were offering
contracts to 20-year-olds who were already playing A grade in local
competitions," he said.

"Before long clubs were out there chasing 17-year-olds . . . then it
was kids of 14 and 15. The next step will be 12-year-olds.

"Parents will go along with it because they want what's best for
their sons and the player managers will get in on the act as well.

"It's bad enough having 15-year-olds being asked to make decisions
about their futures without chasing answers from even younger boys."

An external draft under which clubs would be given specific
recruitment areas would stop clubs ripping the talent from regional
centres and giving nothing back ..More from the Courier Mail

Mondays Question to the Coaching Forum.

I need to work on my physical fitness.

My name is Anthony Letayf and I am a prop for AUB [Lebanese Rugby
League] I am extremely anxious to make the Cedars squad for the
upcoming Mediterranean Cup, however I need to work on my physical
fitness.

Is there any way I could get a training program that would get me
into tip top shape, everything from speed and endurance to
weightlifting.

Thank you for your help.

The Great Divide of 1895
(The Birth of English Rugby League)

The governing body of "rugby" - the Rugby Football Union - had been
formed in 1871 by representatives of 21 clubs. All of these clubs
were located in southern England and most were within London itself.
By the early 1890's rugby had become widespread and well over half
the RFU's clubs were in northern England. The working classes of the
north of England and South Wales were particularly taken with rugby
over soccer.

As with rugby clubs right across England, the majority of the clubs
of the North were created and operated by men of the ruling classes.
However, as the majority of the population in Yorkshire and
Lancashire was working class, the clubs, teams and crowds quickly
displayed a cross-class nature. Hull FC was formed in 1865 by a young
gentlemen who had been at Rugby School and immediately took on
members who were plumbers and glaziers. An ever rarer example was
Leeds Athletic which was started by working men on their own
initiative. It began with an advertisement in a local newspaper
placed by a rail clerk.

Other clubs had religious affiliations at the start which are now
long forgotten, but others such as Wakefield Trinity were marked by
this for the rest of their existence. Wakefield was formed in 1873 as
a sporting arm of the Holy Trinity Church Young Men's Society.
