EXTRACT FROM RLCM BOOK 26 printed 2002.
http://www.rlcm.com.au/editions.htm
With Chris Anderson Australian and Cronulla Sharks coach.
Written by Ashley Bradnam
RLCM: It seems a coach is becoming more and
more like a sports psychiatrist?
Anderson: It is starting to feel like that but it's just
the way it is. Footy coaching is probably only 40%
about coaching and 60% about creating an
environment for people to do well. I think that's the
important part. Footy is a pretty simple game. If it
was just footy coaching, I probably would have been
bored with it ten years ago – I do enjoy the challenge
of finding out how to make things work. The game
is simple but the man management is the thing
that separates the people who are prepared to have
a go from the people who aren't. That is the thing
that I would say effects performances from almost
anything else.
RLCM: We see the juniors today being coached
to tackle higher in an effort to lock up the ball.
Should we still be coaching the youngsters to
tackle around the legs?
Anderson: In our game a lock-up tackle is
considered good technique. That has become the
basic tackle. There is a fair bit of technique required
to be able to lock the ball up effectively so I can
understand junior coaches wanting their team to be
able to practice that. You actually tend to go for a
combination tackle – the first player locking the ball
up and the second player going low. The days of
just taking them low is not practiced anywhere near
as much by us anymore but I think young players
need to be able to understand that, because it lays
the platform for the future and reinforces the basics.
You shouldn't be as competitive with the kids – let
them have fun.
RLCM: How important is blind side play?
Anderson: It's more important for me than it is for
other clubs. Some clubs are using second rowers as
locks but for mine that cuts down their options. I
like to have a real lock forward so that we can use
both side of the ruck and increase our options. The
half and five-eighth work one side and your lock
works the other and you have your bases covered.
For me it is important you have three genuine ball
players so you have more bases covered.
RLCM: We continually hear coaches rattle off
the cliché `We need to do the little things right'.
For you, what are the little things you look for?
Anderson: It's more about doing things that are
conducive to the team winning the game and not
losing the game. You can fall into a trap of guys
throwing passes that need to be absolutely perfect
for them to come off – we try to cut down on those
type of things............................more

* Tiger cub shows how hot he can be on the field
Wests Tigers 18 - London Broncos 12
After he ignored wild bushfires to get to Sydney for training,
Chris Heighnington's new club came to him on Saturday night and
he rewarded them with a five-star performance.
The 21-year-old Wests Tigers signing from the Central Coast Bears
stunned coaching staff when he showed up for training at Concord two
months ago despite Gosford being cut off by a fierce blaze.
The show of dedication helped him get a start in the first game of
the rugby league season on Saturday night - on his home soil at
NorthPower Stadium against the London Broncos.
And Heighnington put himself forward as the first "discovery" of new
coach Tim Sheens with a key role in the joint venture club's 18-12
win.
"I had to get up at six to catch a ferry to Palm Beach, catch a bus
and then a taxi to Concord Oval to train," said the lock, who
described staying with the Bears as "a dead-end street for me".
"A few blokes missed training but I thought I might as well go. I had
nothing else to do that day."
Sheens, who rested most of his big names, said: "We've put him in our
fulltime squad - it's a good first step on the way to
Wests Tigers first grade."

* Gary Freeman unseated by residency rule
The New Zealand Rugby League appears to be hiding behind a change of
job description in failing to renew the contract of Kiwis coach Gary
Freeman.
President Selwyn Pearson said yesterday that future coaches and other
management staff would have to live in New Zealand.
Freeman has fulltime employment outside the game in Sydney and it
seems unlikely he will move his family back to New Zealand in a bid
to continue in a job knowing he does not have the full support of the
executive.
Pearson continued to talk yesterday of Freeman being a good coach but
it is known there are aspects of his coaching methods, communication
and management style that do not rest comfortably with the executive.
They were highlighted on the Kiwis' tour to Britain and France when
the team under-performed in sharing the series with Great Britain
after a win, a draw and a loss.

* St Helens 'warm up' in Canaries
Super League champions St Helens are warming up in the Canaries for
their Cross Code Challenge and World Club Championship. The Saints
squad are in Lanzarote for a week's intensive training and have had
sessions twice a day since their arrival on Thursday.
"It is a punishing training trip - certainly not a holiday!" insisted
coach Ian Millward. "We know that we are playing for British rugby
league in the Cross Code Challenge and the World Club Challenge and
that brings with it a lot of pressure.
"However, Saints players thrive in those conditions, as do our fans,
and, with our fans help, we can ensure two more great nights for
British rugby league in the next few weeks," Millward told Saints
official website.
Saints will face Sale Sharks in the Cross Code Challenge at Knowsley
Road on Monday 27 January.

* Dewsbury 22 defeated Skolars 10
London Skolars made an encouraging start to professional life with a
battling display in a 22-10 defeat to Dewsbury in the Arriva Trains
Cup.
The Skolars were edged out by just three tries to two in difficult
conditions at the New River Stadium, producing a performance that
offered hope for the National League Two campaign ahead.
The capital side took the lead after 28 minutes when Kirk Wetherspoon
touched down near the corner.
Dewsbury hit back quickly with three tries either side of half-time
from man-of-the-match Scott Rhodes, Mike Wainwright and Jamie Benn.
Benn kicked five goals to give the Rams a 16-point lead, which was
reduced by Richard Pollard's late try.
==============================================================
* Hull KR 36 defeated York 26
Hull KR produced a late points rush to beat York City Knights 36-26
in the Arriva Trains Cup.
Rovers held their nerve in a frantic finish after the lead had
changed hands seven times to give their new coach Steve Linnane
a winning start.
York, forced to build from scratch after folding midway through
last season, fell just short of their victory target but will be
greatly encouraged by a spirited performance which delighted a
crowd of 3,105 at the Huntington Stadium.
The Knights, who won only one league game in 2002 before the plug
was pulled, edged themselves 26-24 in front when Chris Smith marked
a lively debut at centre with a 68th minute try.

====================================================================
* New dawn for York Knights
By Dave Hadfield
The ability of the professional game in York to rise from the ashes
will have its first and most searching examination when the newly-
formed York City Knights play their inaugural game this afternoon.
The Knights have ridden in to fill the gap left by the demise of the
York Wasps midway through last season and the hope throughout the
game is that they prove more stable and successful than their
predecessors.
With the knowledgable Steve Ferres in charge of recruitment, they
have certainly put together a promising squad. Their player-coach,
the former Great Britain prop, Paul Broadbent, will miss their
opening Arriva Trains Cup match against Hull KR recuperating from
shoulder surgery, but any club outside Super League would like to
have him, Richie Hayes and Lee Jackson in their front row.

* Fleary D-day approaches Jan 18 2003
By Chris Roberts, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
A DECISION is expected to be made over the weekend as to whether
Great Britain prop Darren Fleary will join the Giants.
With all signings having to be made by Monday to meet the Challenge
Cup deadline, the pressure is on for a decision to be reached.
Fleary has made no secret of the fact that he would like to sign for
his hometown club, while Giants head coach Tony Smith admits he is
always on the look-out for quality players.
But the key to Fleary's potential arrival is this week's trial period.
By all accounts, the 30-year-old former Moldgreen junior has
throughly enjoyed his week training under Smith's regime.

====================================================================
* Salford Reds seek instant return
STEVE Simms pulls no punches. He views the new season as one of the
most important campaigns in Salford City Reds history.
Few would disagree with the Reds' football director as Karl
Harrison's team prepare for life outside Super League.
Simms commented: "Returning to Super League at the first opportunity
is the obvious target.

* Super League spreads its net
Richard Lewis led the fact-finding mission to France
Leading French club Union Treiziste Catalane (UTC) are set to join
the Super League in 2005.
The Perpignan-based club pipped rivals Toulouse and Villeneuve after
a fact-finding mission to France by Super League officials.
The current Super League clubs endorsed the decision at a meeting in
Widnes.
League officials believe the prospects of sustaining a successful
club - following the demise of Paris St Germain in 1998 - are greater
in the rugby league hotbed of the Catalan region.
But it insists the door is not closed to Toulouse and Villeneuve for
future applications.

* Wigan salute adopted son
LOCAL LEGEND: Billy Boston
WIGANERS love the great Billy Boston like one of their own! He's a
giant of a man still revered by those who marvelled at his skills in
the fifties and sixties.
Everyone in Wigan has heard of Billy Boston - the man is a sporting
icon who is about to be honoured for what he has done for his town.
Billy's own Golden Jubilee year has just kicked off to mark his 50
years in Wigan.
He travelled north in March 1953 to launch what was a glorious career.
The teenage Billy was initially apprehensive, wondering if he would
be accepted because of his colour.
His dream of playing Rugby Union for his native Wales never
materialised and it was his mother who persuaded him to accept a
couple of thousand pounds offered by Wigan bosses.

* Single governing body moves closer
THE BARLA Board of Management have recommended to BARLA members that
they vote in favour of unification with the Rugby Football League
when they meet at a Special Assembly Sunday 26 January 2003.
The move follows a meeting between representatives of BARLA and Sport
England on Thursday.
A letter to member clubs and leagues from BARLA chief executive Ian
Cooper reads: "I am writing to inform you that for the acceptance of
the single governing body constitution subject to a slight amendment
to Rule 87.
Rule 87 should not apply to BARLA, i.e. the single governing body
constitution should not impose upon BARLA losses incurred by the RFL.
It is our understanding that this amendment would not present an
obstacle to the RFL.
The BARLA General Assembly meeting at which the vote will be taken
will be held on Sunday 26 January 2003 at 10.30am at St Patricks
Catholic Centre, Huddersfield.

* London Broncos beaten
WESTS TIGERS beat a visiting London Broncos' side hit by injuries
18-12 in a friendly at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday night.
The Broncos were forced to use 10 local players to bolster their
depleted ranks.
The match was played in sweltering heat on an evening that followed a
day of temperatures that hit the 40s - well past the century mark in
the old Fahrenheit scale.
One of the `guest' players, Wyong utility back Dean Amos,
scoredalmost all of London's points with two tries and a goal.
The Broncos fly home to London on Wednesday to prepare for their
Challenge Cup match in three weeks time.

====================================================================
* Doran deal called off Jan 18 2003
HUDDERSFIELD Giants have pulled out of a planned move to sign
Oldham's star utility forward Lee Doran.
Chief executive Ralph Rimmer admitted his club were very interested
in the player but no deal could be struck.
"Because he is 21 a transfer fee would have been involved and
unfortunately Oldham's asking price was way too high," said Rimmer.
====================================================================
* Hull KR have signed New Zealand scrum-half Latham Tawhai.
Tawhai has previously played for Doncaster, Hunslet, Keighley and
Rochdale.
He was a member of Hunslet's Grand Final winning team in 1999.

====================================================================
* NRL dumps Saturday afternoon games
The NRL has wiped the 3pm Saturday kick-off from its 2003 draw and it
seems few people will mourn its passing.
Changes in society have made Saturday afternoon a disaster for league
clubs at the gate although Australian rules still draws well on
Saturday afternoons in Melbourne.
Saturday afternoon NRL clashes were scheduled to fit in with
Melbourne Storm last year because the Storm had done a deal with
Channel 9 to show matches live in Victoria.
Melbourne is keen to get "bums on seats" this year and Saturday night
and Sunday afternoon kick-offs are the most attractive.
And there was no guarantee Channel 9 would provide a live telecast
again.
NRL chief executive David Gallop said yesterday he believed clubs
would be able to maximise attendances this year while pay-TV
subscribers would still get a good deal.

* Leave rules to the refs
From the outset, let me say I am not a fan of coaches' meetings and I
am certainly not a fan of coaches having a constant influence on the
way rugby league rules are interpreted.
Having said that, however, I must say I am buoyed by the positive
approach taken by the NRL coaches at their meeting on Wednesday night
and also the feedback on new referees boss Robert Finch for his
excellent presentation.

* Freeman asked to reapply for Kiwis job
Kiwis rugby league coach Gary Freeman has been told he will have to
reapply if he wants to extend his tenure as coach for another two
years.
Freeman was appointed for a two-year term in 2001, with his contract
able to be rolled over for a further two years if both he and the New
Zealand Rugby League consented.
However, NZRL chairman Selwyn Pearson said a board meeting by
teleconference today decided to opt for a new selection process for
the national coaching position.

====================================================================
* Dean Bell remains with Warriors
Dean Bell rejoined Wigan from Leeds two years ago.
Former New Zealand captain Dean Bell has pledged his future to Wigan
and will stay on as football executive.
There had been speculation over Bell's future after his contract
expired at the end of the year.
The former Wigan, Leeds and Auckland Warriors centre had been tipped
to return home to take up a post with the New Zealand League.

* Anger over Bulldog board election
CANTERBURY legends Steve Mortimer and George Peponis are likely to
walk away from the club if the board they handpicked is not retained
at the Bulldogs' annual general meeting.
Six members of the former Bulldogs board who re-signed en masse
following last year's salary cap rorting will re-apply for their
positions at the February 9 elections.
They are George Coorey, Peter Lander, Roger Harborne, Alan Schwebel,
Keith Lotty and Roger Nicey.
"I don't think we can look a lot of people in the face if some of the
old board are on the new board," chairman Peponis said.

====================================================================
* Grothe's fists of fury costly
TALENTED Sydney Roosters winger Eric Grothe may go down in history as
having thrown the two most expensive punches rugby league has known.
His one-two combination in the final round of the 2002 first division
premiership resulted in Grothe being sent off and suspended for two
games.
But because players can only serve the suspension in the grade in
which they were dismissed, Grothe missed three first grade finals and
the Roosters' grand final win last season.
And yesterday he was barred from the Roosters' trip to England for
the World Club Challenge, as well as the World Sevens.
