COACHING QUOTE - By Ric Charlesworth ex Coach Australian Womens
Hockey, Gold Medal winners at Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Olympic
Games, from his book 'The Coach Managing for Success'
"In business they call it multiskilling. Athletes must be able to
cope with changes and be able to do more than one job in order to
give a team flexibility. The Hockeyroos were expected to have more
than one string to their bow. They were required to play on the right
or the left, [and] to defend and attack"

Manly Administration Lack Continuity for 2003
For the good of the game, whatever is happening or about to happen at
Manly the situation has to be corrected quickly. The problem
between 'Fatty' and 'Bozo' has to be fixed and out of the sight of
the media.[see story below in the news section]
The Manly club, after several years of internal problems, will find
themselves down the same path in 2003.
Coach Sharp spoke earlier this year about the lack of club
continuity.
Continuity is one of the assets that successful football teams have
in their long term plans for success. This asset does not only
feature with the football team on the field it must also relate to
the continuity in administration of the football club.
Successful NRL clubs know that the continuity acquisition is a part
of their success and guard it jealously.
Continuity has been missing from the Manly based club over the last
few years and for Peter Sharp's case in 2003 it appears that his wish
to have a strong Manly administration is already out of the window,
simply because 'Fatty' and 'Bozo' are not speaking to each other, and
if what we read is true, they are going on like two children.
Surely someone with some football nous in the Manly administration
can fix it immediately and let coach Sharp get on with his job of
winning games for the fans.

EXTRACT FROM RLCM BOOK 25 printed 2002.
http://www.rlcm.com.au/editions.htm
The Pre-Season - A race against time!
Terry Gilogley B.Ex.Sc.; ARL Level 3 Coach.
Putting things into perspective.
................in years gone by the pre-season was preceded by the
off-season. Nowadays there is no longer room for a laid back off –
season, which was the exclusive right for physical development e.g.
cross training and hypertrophy development. Because of the
competitive professional nature of NRL clubs, sport specific
preparation must begin from day one.
This can also be addressed in the weight room as well as in land and
water based activities. This is this reason the off - season has been
eliminated from this proposed model.
The purpose of this article is to examine the period between November
and Mid February (Pre Season Phase - approximately 16 weeks).
It will be looked at mainly from a coaching perspective as opposed to
physical development. This is the foundation time, which will provide
structure for the rest of the season. It is not the
overriding priority of this article to scrutinise every macro or
micro cycle, but to take a pragmatic view of what a head coach and
his coaching staff have to deal with throughout this purgatorial time
period. Then to look at things which need to take place for it to be
a successful campaign.
The Basic Pre-Season Requirements
To the uninitiated, sixteen weeks (November - Mid March) would seem
sufficient time to prepare a team for the new season. However, there
is an abundance of facets to cover.
Coaches need to approach this phase with a basic plan, a coaching
method and an on going evaluation of this process. For the
enhancement of the whole athlete the following should be considered:
TABLE 1
Training Periods for NRL Clubs.
Period Months Covered Weeks Special Focus
Transitional Phase Oct - Nov 4-6 Recovery
Pre Season (Early) Nov - Dec 5-7 Team bonding
Pre - Season (Mid) Jan – Early Feb 5 Mini Camps
Pre - Season (Late) Mid Feb- Mid March 4 Trial Games
Competition Season March - September 28 Winning
Finals Series Sept-Oct 4 Grand Final
1. Physical (conditioning / hypertrophy /speed)
2. Technical (technique / skills)
3. Tactical (basic team ploys and attack / defence patterns)
4. Psychological (mental preparation / group dynamics)
5. Theoretical (Rational behind team strategies)
The astute Head coach would then apply management coaching principles
to incorporate these basic elements. Some of the above can run
concurrently while others are phased in at different stages in the
pre-season period.
As if this wasn’t enough, time is also taken out of this period
for club commitments i.e. fan days, corporate sponsorship, community
obligations and junior clinics.
Considering there is approximately 16-20hrs coaching time a week
available to the coaching personnel, any incursion into this precious
time could be crucial lost coaching opportunities.
How are your time management skills functioning, head coach?
Team Bonding
Team bonding can occur as basically as players’ daily pushing
themselves & each other to their physical & mental limits.
Many coaches rely on this strategy in the early weeks of the pre-
season. Quite often utilising the ‘good cop, bad cop routine’.
Gelling as a team also relies on three main ingredients from the
players
1. Hard work; 2. Good thinking; and 3. A Habit of mutual respect
between teammates & coaching staff (and the opposition in the
competition phase).
The coach is also looking for players who display the following
attributes, mutual striving, unselfish behaviour and players who do
all the little things correctly.
This will build an attitude and atmosphere of trust between players.
Throw in honest communication and feedback from coaching staff and
you have the platform for a successful campaign...........more

* Manly family feud
By Danny Weidler, The Sun-Herald:
"So are we going to be friends or what?"
They were among the last words exchanged between two of Manly's
greatest former players, Bob Fulton and Paul Vautin, who are now
involved in one of rugby league's great feuds.
Fulton was asking Vautin the question. He'd heard his then friend,
who he referred to as "Blue", had said his son was an ordinary player.
"That's up to you, Bob," was Vautin's reply.
That was the last conversation between two men some said were "like
family". It has resulted in a feud that Manly leagues club boss and
friend of both men, Ken Arthurson, said he hopes to end in the new
year ..more

* Stuart Fielden predicts top-flight dogfight for Super League
Telegraph Argus: Bradford Bulls and St Helens have been made joint
favour-ites at 6-4 with Skybet to win the 2003 regular season.
Wigan are third favourites for the Minor Premiership at
3-1, and then come Leeds (16-1), Hull (25-1), Castleford and London
(66-1), Widnes (150-1), Halifax, Wakefield and Warrington (500-1) and
newly-promoted Huddersfield (1000-1).
"Those odds are about right because they are a reflection of last
season," said Bulls prop Stuart Fielden.
"The top three are pretty close, and Leeds aren't that far away
either, and they could easily become minor premier champions.
"It will be interesting to see how they do having had a clean-out,
but any one of the top five or six could win Super League and it is
going to be a real dogfight.
"Look at how well Widnes did last season in their first campaign
since promotion?"
Meanwhile, Fielden, who has just returned from a holiday in Tenerife,
has expressed shock at his inclusion in a World XIII published in
this month's Rugby League World magazine.
"It is a massive accolade, and it is great to be picked for something
like that, but I am a little bit surprised," admitted the 23-year-old.
"I think of other players selected as being a cut above me, and some
of those who haven't been picked I reckon are too."
What didn't surprise `Fearless', however, were the three other
Britons chosen in the 13 - Paul Sculthorpe, Keith Senior and Andy
Farrell.
"It is recognition of how well Great Britain did in their recent
series against New Zealand," said the Bulls' Player of the Year.

* Beady-eyed Nigel talks turkey to Wigan Warriors
Manchester Online: With no match over Christmas, Wigan Warriors are
turning into a bunch of weight watchers - and extra pounds will cost
them cash.
It will be back on the scales under the beady eye of conditioner
Nigel Ashley-Jones after the holiday break. And any player who has
piled on the pounds tucking into the turkey and trimmings can expect
to be fined.
With head coach Stuart Raper taking a break back home in Australia,
Ashley-Jones has been busy with preparations for the new season.
And he's aiming to turn the Warriors forwards into an even bigger six
pack as Super League falls into line with Australia over the
interchange rule.
Coaches this time out will be allowed to utilise their substitutes
and make 12 changes, last year they were restricted to just
six ..more

* Gary Connolly a threat to Francis Cummins
By Ian Laybourn, PA Sport: Francis Cummins led Leeds to a 20-2
victory over Castleford in the traditional Boxing Day challenge and
then discovered he is in danger of losing his full-back role in
addition to the captaincy.
Within minutes of putting pen to a two-year contract, evergreen Wigan
and Great Britain star Gary Connolly was introduced to the 10,366
Headingley crowd midway through the Rhinos' comfortable four-try
success.
The 31-year-old Connolly was snapped up by Leeds after Wigan chairman
Maurice Lindsay, currently holidaying in Australia, agreed to release
him from his rugby union commitments with sister club Orrell.
The former St Helens favourite was delighted to abandon his brief
career in the 15-man code in order to extend his Super League career
and revealed he has set his sights on the full-back role at
Headingley ..more

* Halifax 28 defeated Salford 12
..more Debutant Paul Parker was a try scorer as new-look Halifax beat
Salford City Reds 28-12 in a pre-season friendly at The Shay on
Sunday.
Parker, who was signed from Hull before Christmas, was one of several
new players in Tony Anderson's side.
Young back rower Jaymes Chapman and half-backs Liam Finn and Sean
Penkywicz were among other try scorers in an encouraging performance.
Finn also kicked four goals.
Salford, relegated from the top flight at the end of last season,
scored two tries through hooker Malcolm Alker and second-rower Andy
Coley, with Steve Blakeley kicking two conversions.
====================================================================
* Wakefield 18 defeated Featherstone 0
Teamtalk: Three late tries gave Wakefield Wildcats an 18-0 victory
against neighbours Featherstone Rovers in a friendly at Post Office
Road on Sunday.
In a hard-fought match played in difficult wet conditions, the
Wildcats led 4-0 at half-time through a Gareth Ellis try.
The home side defended well throughout but were undone in the last 10
minutes when the visitors scored three times.
Rob Spicer, Waisale Sovatabua and debutant Olivier Elima all touched
down with Ian Knott converting the final try.
Wakefield's Australian stand-off Ben Jeffries set up two of the
tries.

* NZ Warriors snubbed
By PRAVIN CHAR and MARC HINTON, Stuff.co.nz: The heroic Warriors and
their coach have been snubbed in our national sports awards, a
decision angering fans, politicians and sporting greats.
The team that captured the hearts of the nation during its historic
drive to the NRL rugby league grand final has been deemed not good
enough to make the shortlist of four finalists for the sports team of
the year at the Halberg Awards.
Coach Daniel Anderson will also be left off the shortlist of
finalists for top coach.
"I'm flabbergasted. For the first time in my life I'm lost for words.
The people who do the judging need to have a look at themselves,"
said the Warriors' number one fan, "Mad Butcher" Peter Leitch.
Warriors chief executive Mick Watson said the team deserved to be a
finalist. "It's disappointing for the players not to get recognition.
The players desrve it as does Daniel Anderson, who is recognised as
up there with the elite coaches in Australasia." ..more
=====================================================================
* Darren Smith to dog the Roosters
Foxsport:, The Sunday Telegraph: After missing out on a premiership
because of the Bulldogs' salary cap crisis, Darren Smith wants the
next best thing -- a shot at the team that took the title, the Sydney
Roosters.
Smith flies out of Australia today to join his new club St Helens and
would love to play in the World Club Challenge match against the
Roosters on February 14 at Bolton.
"It would be great if I could play that match, but, to be honest, I
haven't got a clue what their plans are," Smith said. "I wasn't in
their team that won it (the competition) last season, so I'll have to
wait and see.
"I'd love to play in the match because last season ended early for
me.
"It would have been good to have seen how well we would have gone in
the finals."
Smith expects to fill a utility role at St Helens, switching between
centre, second row and hooker.
=====================================================================
* Leeds 20 defeated Castleford 2
Leeds celebrate Connolly's arrival with win.
Leeds enjoyed a 20-2 victory in their Boxing Day challenge with
Castleford, but the biggest cheer was reserved for the half-time
introduction of new signing Gary Connolly.
The Rhinos delayed the kick-off to allow the bumper 10,366 crowd into
Headingley. They scored four tries without reply in a scrappy
encounter.
Leeds, who included three of their close-season signings in Dave
Furner, Chris Feather and Andrew Dunemann, struggled to overcome the
sticky conditions but they had too much class for their under-
strength visitors ..more

* Warrington 34 defeated Widnes 16
Sporting Life: Paul Cullen's rejuvenated Warrington side were
outstanding as they clinched the Wire FM Trophy 34-16 against their
neighbours in front of a crowd of 6,608 at the Halton Stadium ..more
=====================================================================
* Connolly set for league return
Ananova: Gary Connolly, who made a switch to rugby union with Orrell
earlier this month, is poised to make a dramatic return to league by
signing for Leeds Rhinos.
Leeds are hoping to finalise the capture of the 31-year-old Great
Britain international, who has been released from the final year of
his contract with Wigan.
The Rhinos hope to unveil Connolly as their latest signing at half-
time in the Boxing Day friendly with Castleford at Headingley.
The move is likely to end Connolly's hopes of playing in next year's
rugby union World Cup.
He qualifies for both England and Ireland and is believed to have
spoken to both countries.

* Brookvale's battle of the board
By Paul Kent, Daily Telegraph: It was two days after he was told the
new board was going in a new direction, a day after they backflipped
and invited him back. It was after he then told them that if he
wasn't good enough yesterday then hey, he certainly wa
sn't good enough today.
It was then that Paul Cummings landed the deal that one day just
might be recorded as the deal that saved the Manly football club.
It was last Friday.
Cummings secured a loan of more than $700,000 from a private
benefactor whose one insistence was anonymity. The loan enabled the
club to pay off several long-standing debts it had had trouble
meeting, debts that included a group tax bill so large that you
needed a running start to jump it.
As one source said: "Draw your own conclusions what would have
happened if he didn't get it."
Meanwhile, on another part of the northern beaches, Ken Arthurson was
taking aside the football club's three newly elected board members --
Paul Vautin, Max Krilich and Peter O'Dwyer -- and telling them how it
was. Hard and fast. Arko, the leagues club cha
irman and so the man with the money, was back on old ground.
And while Cummings was pulling off his deal and preparing to then
slip off into anonymity himself, quietly and without fuss, Arthurson
had plans. And so climaxed a week that Arthurson, the old street-
fighter, called the blackest in Manly's history. ..more
