* Drills for decision-making - By Gary Roberts from the next RLCM
Book 29 out January 2003.

......for a coach, how his players perform during the match, in areas
of decision-making is the absolute final test for the quality of the
decision-making drills that the coach has been able to put together
in his practice sessions.

On the other hand, if the coach is doing drills successfully at
practice, but are preformed negatively during the game and the
players are not improving. It could be suggested that it is down to
the coach and drills that he is using.

..............in football it is difficult due to the physical
component in the game although it is not every thing in the game, it
is an integral part of it, so if players practice under full on game
conditions, the risk is that they will bash themselves up and
literally they could so fatigued that they can't play well on
weekends.

There is a real challenge of coming up with decision-making drills,
there is no real full substitute for designing drills that put
players in positions where they have to make those decisions.

Designing games, where there is something at stake and the players
put pressure on each other to ensure that they are doing it as close
to full on as possible, in terms of a motivated state. To say it is
one thing, but it is tough to do.

The other thing is the use of video. Rather than actually looking at
the situation in a detached way and learning about where the players
hands were or feet were or where he was positioned in relation to the
player inside of him, video makes all that easy.

There is definitely a part and a role for video replay for the player
to see the big picture. Ultimately he has to realize the terms of the
decisions that he needs to make and he still has to practice them
under game like conditions as much possible............

TRAINING - Speed - Agility - Power
By Ashey Jones
Written by Robert Rachow written 2000

Ashley Jones has travelled a career path that has taken
him on a journey via Newcastle and Parramatta,
eventually leading to the newly - merged Northern
Eagles. Just like his career path he believes an eccletic
multi facet approach to training is important.

In Jones'book, the basics are the essentials. If you
cover all your bases and don't shirk the work, then
the season should be fine sailing. Whatever you put
into the tank prior to Christmas you draw on in
September.

A typical week for the Eagles resembles something
like this:

First day after recovery: Maximal velocity session
incorporating game conditioning exercises and, drills
incorporating agility.

Second day: Functional athletic strength training
session looking at total body strength and power.

Third day: Extras or rest. The extras sessions are for
those with below par fitness or for players seeking
specialised training for a particular area such as
tackling or kicking.

Fourth day: Short sharp speed session after skills.
Obviously, for non-professional outfits in suburbia and
rural regions, such a program would be impractical.

However Jones says teams with limited time together
can condense the five major elements - speed, power,
agility, ball work and endurance - into their desired
number of sessions through the use of modified
games. The underlying theme is that when compacting
the various elements, the full spectrum of skills should
be maintained. And within each of those skills, a full
array of components must be covered.

For instance, a gym session would only cover one-fifth
of the week's training, but that session in itself
should be as comprehensive as possible. The logic is
to balance out all the individual capabilities into one
overall complete package.

An example of an overall
workout could be - three leg exercises (one Olympic
movement, one squat and one hamstring exercise),
one lower back activity, two upper body pulling
exercises, one upper body pushing exercise, grip work,
and abdominals.

Even then, within each activity it can
be broken down further. Leg squats alone can be
performed by explosive Olympic squats, back squat,
front squat and/or one-legged squat, just to name a
few.

"Basically I believe that what ever you don't use, you
lose," Jones states.

When you get in the gym - or even out on the track -you
should be looking to cover everything; move
through all the movements. Maintaining overall
strength and fitness is the key, not just concentrating
on one area until it is super special.

When it comes to testing the fitness level of players,
Jones is again a fan of sticking to the basics. His simple
endurance test is a 2.4 kilometre course, with timed
goals for each player with the beep test during the
season more specific because of the shuttle nature of
the test. However, for more specific information he
recommends timing players over a variety of distances
such as 100 metres, 400m and one kilometre in order
to judge each energy system relationship.

This enables you to judge the metres covered per
second or velocity(distance divided by time). Some
players may register very low speeds over the shorter
distance, but be able to maintain fairly high velocity
over the longer target, or vice-versa. This then allows
you to target a specific element of their running that
needs improvement.

In terms of power output, most players these days can
claim to bench press in excess of 140kg. Many can
go higher than 180kg. Other tests such as power clean
and squat will reveal similarly startling figures. But
to set a standard weight target that is applied across
the board would be fraught with folly, says Jones.

"Fitness tests are like everything else in your training
regime, they should be open to variation and be
positional specific," Jones warns.

"Setting generic tests and goals that are cast in stone
is of no value to anybody. A veteran player who has
been battered and thrown around won't be able to
perform at the same level as most of your squad. It is
a fact of life that his impairment will stop him from
reaching that target. Similarly another player might
not push himself to his fullest capacity if the generic
goal is too low..................More

* Port Macquarie to have teams in NSWCRL Groups 2 & 3

Written by: Damien Herb, rleague.com: An interesting situation awaits
locals when the respective Group 2 and Group 3 competitions are
launched in March. This coming season the Group 3 competition will
field a team from Port Macquarie for the first time in over 10 years.

However this side will not be the highly popular Port Macquarie
Sharks outfit, they will stay in Group 2. The new side has been
formed via pressure from the new Panthers Leagues Club, hence the
introduction of the Port City Panthers.

The Panthers franchise has run the Port RSL for two years now quite
successfully, however it continued to make bids to take over the Port
Macquarie Sharks. When this attempt was unsuccesful they decided to
form their own club in the struggiling Group 3 competition ..more

*Leeds Rhinos to hold talk with Adrian Morley

Teamtalk: Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington has revealed that
he will hold talks with former Headingley idol Adrian Morley on
Boxing Day.

The Great Britain Test star left Leeds two years ago to link up with
Sydney Roosters in the NRL but he will back at Headingley to watch
the Rhinos take on Castleford on 26 December - and Hetherington plans
to use the occasion to discuss the 26-year-old's future plans.

"Adrian will be one of our guests on Boxing Day," said Hetherington.
"I have seen him and chatted with him while he has been over here,
but I've not had any formal talks. I'll maybe take that opportunity
on Boxing Day."

Morley only has a year remaining on his Roosters contract and
Hetherington admitted that he will be going all out to lure him back
to Headingley in 2004 ..more

*Hull KR closing in on former Great Britain prop Harvey Howard

Teamtalk: Hull KR chairman Colin McNicol has revealed that the Robins
are close to completing their swoop for former Great Britain prop
Harvey Howard.

The 33-year-old was released by Wigan at the end of Super League VII
and has been locked in talks with the ambitious National League One
side about a move to Humberside.

McNicol revealed that negotiations were still ongoing but was hopeful
that the transfer coup would soon be complete.

"We're still in negotiations with Harvey Howard which are very
positive and are going forward well," said McNicol ..more

* I'll make Eagles soar: Fatty Vautin

By Peter Kogoy, Foxsports: Manly chairman-elect Paul Vautin plans to
make his mark by attracting new Sea Eagles sponsors.

Urged on by leagues club chairman Ken Arthurson, Vautin didn't back
down from the election and was voted on to the board. He will be
installed as club chairman at tonight's meeting.

"Ken Arthurson's advice to me was not to give in, and that something
good would come out of this adversity," he said.

Vautin and the new board have plenty to do: the club reported an
operating loss for the past financial year of $2.1 million.

"It takes around $8 million to run a successful club. That's what it
will take to make Manly successful again," Vautin said ..more

* Gavin Clinch relishing Salford switch

Manchester Online: Gavin Clinch enjoyed success playing alongside big
Karl Harrison and Salford's star signing is now hoping for more of
the same as a key member of Harrison's Salford squad preparing for
the new NFP season.

Clinch, who is likely to make his Salford debut against Whitehaven in
their early New Year clash, is relishing the challenge.

"I probably would not have joined Salford but for the fact Karl is
coach," he said. "I have always respected him - he's honest and I
know just how determined he is to enjoy success.

"I can't wait for the new season because I have always enjoyed
playing at the Willows.

"Karl has assembled a good squad and I can see just how determined
they are." ..more

* Maurice Bamford loves the Challenge Cup

Manchester Online: Former GB coach Maurice Bamford has sprung to the
defence of the Challenge Cup claiming it is still rugby league's
premier knockout competition.

Bamford, who also coached Wigan and Leeds, claims it saddens him to
see the cup being viewed in some quarters as a secondary competition.

As professional clubs prepare to enter this year's event, Bamford has
expressed his own support for the competition's stature.

He said: "I absolutely deplore the downgrading of the Challenge Cup.
Wembley used to be the venue and the cup was the product ..more

* Paul Vautin to be appointed Sea Eagles chairman

Daily Telegraph: Paul "Fatty" Vautin the Manly legend will be
appointed chairman of his beloved Sea Eagles.

Vautin, with 147 votes, was joined by former team-mate Max Krilich
(161) and local junior league official Peter O'Dwyer (177) in being
returned to the six-man board.

The new board will have plenty to do after the football club reported
an operating loss for the last financial year of $2.1m.

However, there is much confidence over the name change from Northern
Eagles back to Manly and the full-time return to Brookvale Oval.

Peter O'Dwyer said Vautin was a worthy choice as chairman and did not
believe his The Footy Show and NRL commentary commitments with Nine
would interfere with his ability to do the job.

"That's certainly not an issue with any of the board members,"
O'Dwyer said.

"The commitment is there and has been since 1998 when he started as a
director.

"In that time I'd be surprised if he has missed any meetings."

Vautin's appointment as chairman will be made official by the Sea
Eagles today.

* Souths Juniors will only give Souths $500,000 next year

By Danny Weidler, SMH: South Sydney's annual $1.5 million sponsorship
backing from the wealthy Souths Juniors club may be under threat only
one season into the senior club's second coming to the NRL.

At best, it appears that the Juniors will give Souths $500,000 next
year, leaving the club a $1million-a-year shortfall on their
predicted income.

In recent years, Souths have won heavy backing from the Juniors, but
there appears to be no hope that they will be able to provide the
Rabbitohs with anything near the level of financial support of recent
years.

"With everything that has been going on I think we can definitely say
that we won't be able to commit the same amount to Souths again next
year," Juniors boss Frank Cookson said ..more

=====================================================================

* Ian Millward mouths off again at Bradford Bulls

By Bill Marshall, Telegraph Argus: St Helens coach Ian Millward is
already stoking up the heat ahead of Super League VIII's opening
night clash with Bradford Bulls.

The Bulls are set to face champions Saints on Friday, February 21 in
front of the Sky TV cameras at Knowsley Road in a repeat of last
season's controversial Grand Final.

That will come just seven days after Saints face Australian champions
Sydney Roosters in a bid to claim the World Club Championship crown
won by Bradford against Newcastle Knights last February.

Recent games between the two clubs - including when Saints fielded a
team missing several regulars at Valley Parade ahead of the Challenge
Cup final - suggest that there will be no lack of spice during the
build-up.

And the Saints boss told Rugby League World magazine: "All they'll do
is talk for weeks and weeks about revenge.

"I'll just block my ears and not really worry. Their chairman will
come out with some stupid comments and we'll just sit back and go
about our business.

"They'll definitely keep talking about the Grand Final, but that is
history now. We won't focus on that game at all. It should be a sell-
out and one hell of a match. Even this far away, you can say it's
going to be a 50-50 proposition."

Meanwhile, Millward would like to see the World Club Championship
expanded in coming years to include eight teams from both sides of
the world.

"I think this is just the start of what could become a big annual
event involving four teams coming here. We could have it at the start
of the year, with three clubs from Australia involved, the New
Zealand Warriors and four clubs from here. We could play over a
number of weeks and then have a final."

=====================================================================

* Keiron Cunningham expected back mid season

Manchester Online: Saints and GB hooker Keiron Cunningham is making
good progress from surgery on a dislocated elbow sustained in the
first Test against New Zealand.

Cunningham still has a protective cast but is on course for a return
midway through next season.

======================================================================

* Neil Baynes on hold for Salford

Manchester Online: Salford Reds will not gamble on the fitness of
pack star Neil Baynes in their pre-season friendly matches.

Baynes is back in full training after a close season hernia operation
and won't be risked before the start of the new campaign.

Reds want the big prop, nicknamed Basher by fans, fully fit for the
Buddies Cup opener against Swinton on January 19.

The following week, Salford entertain Toulouse in the Challenge Cup
and want Baynes back to his best for this one.

Football director Steve Simms told MEN Sport: "Baynes is over the
operation and training very hard, but I can't see us taking any
chances on him in the friendlies."

Reds expect to be at full strength for the derby with Swinton but
Neil Baxter looks to have played his last game for the Reds.

He still hasn't been seen at training and is tipped to move into
rugby union.

* GMB UNION NATIONAL CUP 2003

BARLA: The British Amateur Rugby League Association is delighted to
announce the first round draw for the 2003 GMB Union National Cup.

The largest Rugby League knockout competition in the world is for a
second year sponsored by a collaboration between the Lancashire and
Yorkshire Regions of the GMB Union.

112 teams will hit the GMB Union National Cup trail, which begins on
Saturday 11 January 2002.

Cup holders West Hull will not begin their trophy defence until the
next round, along with the other National Conference League Premier
Division teams, whilst last years beaten finalists Ince Rose Bridge,
are making the trip across the Pennines to face Heworth of the
National Conference League Division Two.

2001 Cup winners Thatto Heath will also be looking to reach the
prestigious Final but face a tricky looking home tie against Pennine
League Premier Division outfit Illingworth.

Gary Jones, Regional Secretary of the GMB Union Lancashire Region and
National Young Members’ Co-ordinator, comments “We in the
Lancashire Region are tremendously excited at the start of this
seasons GMB Union National Cup and would like to wish all teams and
their supporters the very best of luck in their endeavors to lift the
Cup in 2003.”

* Featherstone Rovers optimistic over future

Ananova: Featherstone Rovers say they are on course to come out of
administration by the end of January.

The club went to the High Court earlier this month to fight a winding-
up order over an unpaid tax bill of £97,000.

But Featherstone chairman Glyn Robinson is optimistic following talks
with potential backers.

He said: "We have been in meetings on Friday with the accountants for
our potential backer.

''Those meetings were extremely productive and at this time it would
appear those discussions will lead to a sum of money being invested
in Featherstone Rovers.

''The money will help us to clear the historic debt that is
strangling us and preventing us moving forward.''

He added: "The talks with the administrator are ongoing and, whilst
there is still much work to do, we are on course to present our CVA
to creditors and come out of administration at the end of January."

====================================================================

* Chris Anderson doubts ARL's move

Foxports: Kangaroos coach Chris Anderson has questioned the logic of
appointing a full-time Australian coach at the end of next season.

The Australian Rugby League is considering the idea after it was
floated at a board meeting earlier this week.

"I don't think we play enough internationals at the moment to really
warrant having someone in the role on a full-time basis," Anderson
said in his first interview since being reappointed as Test coach
this week.

"You would need a pretty solid program in place to justify the
position.

"I also believe [coaching Australia] is a reward for blokes who do
well at club football.

"The same as with the players – if you do well in the rough and
tumble of club football and Origin football then you get a shot at
playing for your country.

"That should be how it is for [coaches] too ..more

=====================================================================

* Maurice Lindsay talks tough

By Ray Chesterton, Foxsports: Maurice Lindsay says the Kangaroos will
face their most torrid opposition in decades on next year's tour.

Lindsay said Great Britain's success in beating the touring New
Zealand this year had injected new confidence into the game in
England.

"It was a great win against New Zealand," Lindsay said.

"England really played well. They showed spirit in bouncing back from
losing the first Test to win the series."

Lindsay said the embarrassment of Great Britain's 64-10 loss to
Australia in a one-off Test in Sydney last July had been at least
partly erased by the win against the Kiwis.

But beating Australia in England remained a big goal.

=====================================================================

* RFL begin TV negotiations

Total RL: The RFL have appointed a firm of media consultants to help
them negotiate the game's next TV deal.

TWI, part of Mark McCormack’s IMG group of companies, is the
largest independent producer, packager and distributor of sports
programming in the world. It represents the rights of some of the
world’s foremost sporting events, including the British Open Golf
Championship and the America’s Cup.

“The RFL’s current contact with BSkyB for the Tetley’s
Super League concludes in 2003, as does our contract with the BBC for
the TXU Energi Challenge Cup," explained Richard Lewis, the RFL's
Executive Chairman.

"The RFL Board interviewed a number of short-listed companies and we
have selected TWI to be our consultants to assist us in negotiating
renewal of our media rights contracts."

TWI’s brief will be to not only maximise income from the rights,
but also to gain Rugby League more extensive coverage through areas
such as magazine programmes, in-flight entertainment, videos and DVD.

Bill Sinrich, President of TWI, said: “We at TWI are delighted to
be working with such a dynamic sport as Rugby League. Both the
Tetley’s Super League and the TXU Energi Challenge Cup have seen
substantial growth in their television audience in the past season
because of the quality and excitement of both competitions.”

* Paul Penrice makes a dramatic return to Workington Town

Total RL: Workington Town coach Paul Penrice has made a dramatic
return to the club after resigning last week.

Penrice quit after just five players turned up to a pre-season
training session.

But the former Town player - who has been at the club for 16 years -
performed a U-turn on Wednesday night after backing from his players,
and is now back in the role just a month before the start of the new
season.

"When you've been at a club for so long it's hard to leave. I just
hope now there are changes in the attitude and commitment of some
players," Penrice said.
