TODAYS NEWS UPDATE 16/12/02

Chris Melling and Matthew Wray inspire England
By Dave Hadfield, Independent: Not content with becoming the first
northern hemisphere team to beat the Australians at this level in 30
years, England Academy are now the only side ever to take a series
from them. Two tries apiece from the Wigan full-back Chris Melling
and Wakefield's winger Matty Wray sealed a memorable victory at
Headingley last night.
"We can now say that we are world champions at under-18 level and we
have never been able to say that,'' said a proud England coach, Mike
Gregory. "In five or six years' time we could be world champions at
senior level.''
England struggled early on to recapture their compelling form of the
first Test and they went behind when the Australian scrum-half, Steve
Goodhew, dummied his way through after six minutes.
They could have been further in arrears before they turned the game
around during an inspired seven-minute spell before half-time. Their
outstanding loose-forward, Gareth Hock, was the catalyst with a break
from the scrum base to set up Wray. His Wigan team-mate Melling then
scored two in two minutes from fluent attacking rugby and added the
goal to the second to give his side an eight-point lead at the break.
Melling's penalty edged England further ahead at the start of the
second half, but the score that really put them on their way to
victory came when the Australians lost the ball and Wray showed
stunning pace to score in the corner.
Tom Learoyd forced his way over for Australia as they threatened a
late fightback, but England kept their nerve and another penalty from
Melling saw them to a result that gives British Rugby League great
hope for the future.

Bridge (Bradford), Wray (Wakefield); Mathers (Leeds), Robinson

A very good English side - Mike McEntyre, Australian Coach
By Chris Park, St Helens: England Academy emerged uncrowned World
Champions at Under 18 level after completing an amazing 2-0 Test
whitewash over Australia at Headingley, Leeds on Friday evening, when
St Helen players Jon Wilkin and Bruce Johnson played vital parts in a
famous 22-12 victory, laying the foundations for England’s first
Series win over the Aussies at any level for thirty years.
Wilkin was at the heart of a massive defensive effort which shocked
the Aussies to the roots in a tough encounter. He was pulled out by
the referee for one particularly robust challenge which sparked an
early wholsale melee : it was a defining moment in a game in which
England served notice that they were not going to be intimidated, and
by halftime they were in command, having run in three tries to lead
14-6.
Johnson was a key man who played a solid part off the bench in
quelling Australia's big forwards in the second half, and overall,
this was a thoroughly solid team effort which had Australian coach
Mike McEntyre admitting that his side had been well beaten.
“It’s great for England, but for us it’s not so great.
We came here with a proud record and now it’s gone, and the shock
back home, which was severe when we lost the First Test, will be
compounded. But we can have no qualms about being beaten by what was
a very good English side.”
England Academy Head Coach, former Saint Mike Gregory, was full of
praise for his players after the game, saying “We have some very
smart and tough young footballers in this country and they were
tremendous tonight.
"All we do as coaches is to give the players ideas – it’s up to them how
they execute them, and when. We knew that Australia would come at us
strongly, we talked about it before the game, and it happened.
"But when we conceded an early try, we never panicked, that’s the important
thing. Our defence throughout the Series has been awesome, and it really
paid off today.”
“I can’t praise our players highly enough. With the help of
Sport England, we were able to prepare thoroughly for this Series, but that
demanded a big commitment from the players and they never faltered.
"After beating New Zealand 2-0 in the Series against them last year
and now Australia by the same margin this time round, we can lay
claim to the title of being World Champions at this age group.
"Hopefully, we can go on to make real progress from here.”

Hunslet re-sign Bryn Powell
By Simon Kerr, National League: HISSA have announced the re-signing
of Bryn Powell the 21 year old former Hunslet Warrior on a 1 year
contract in conjunction with the club.
Powell was named in the Northern Ford Premiership side of last season
after a phenomenal first season in professional rugby league scoring
an amazing 25 tries from 31 games in a side that finished second from
bottom last term.
A place in the Welsh national training squad was due recognition for
his efforts to cap a great season.
Hunslet were delighted to keep hold of Bryn despite interest from
other National League sides and also a Super League side.

Russian side knocked out of Challenge Cup
Ananova: Russian team Strella Kazan were beaten by Hull amateur side
Embassy 20-16 on their historic first appearance in the TXU Energi
Challenge Cup.
Kazan loose forward Maxim Romanov ran in three tries in a man-of-the-
match performance but it was not enough in a tense encounter played
in atrocious conditions at Hull KR's Craven Park.
Embassy fell behind early to the first of Romanov's touchdowns but
hit back with three tries in nine minutes from Mark Dawson, Craig
Barker and Craig Sharkett to lead 18-6 at the break.
They extended their lead to 20-6 with a Dawson penalty four minutes
into the second period but Kazan fought back to set up a thrilling
finish.
Romanov crossed twice more and Mikhail Mitrofanov added a goal in a
late onslaught but Embassy held on to claim their place in the third
round.

BARLA reject reunification deal
By Dave Hadfield, The Independent: The British Amateur Rugby League
Association runs the risk of losing its funding following the
decision of its management board that it cannot accept the Rugby
League's proposals for reunification.
Sport England, which at present supports BARLA to the tune of
£130,000 a year, says it will only fund a single governing body in
future, but the organisation's chief executive, Ian Cooper, said: "We
have reached an impasse. There are fundamental issues which make it
impossible for us to recommend reunification to the full meeting of
BARLA next month.''
One of the major sticking points is that under RFL's terms, BARLA
staff would in future be employed by them. "That would give us no
sovereignty whatever,'' Cooper said ..more

Chris Anderson calls for Livermore to stop cheap shots
By Cameron Bell and Garry Legg, Daily Telegraph: Test coach Chris
Anderson says continued outbursts by Queensland Rugby League chief
executive Ross Livermore over his tenure as national coach were
lowering the value of the Australian Test jersey.
On the eve of the AR'Ls board meeting, where the national coaching
position will be discussed, Anderson said it was stupid that
Livermore sought to bring state allegiances into the decision-making
process.
In his strongest reply to Livermore's opposition to him as coach,
Anderson said he wasn't about to give it up just because Livermore
said it was time.
"It's disappointing he wants to lower the value of the Australian
jumper by bringing state allegiances into it," Anderson said.

A Golden Point thought - Phil Gould
SMH:.........it will be very exciting to see the first game in which
the golden point extra time is used to break a deadlock.
I do think, however, that the golden point extra time rule should
only be to win a bonus premiership point and that the losing team
should retain the point it earned for the drawn score at the end of
80 minutes.
Surely a team that loses in extra time is entitled to more than the
team that gets flogged by 40 points? The winner gets two points and
the loser of a golden point game gets a point. Seems fair to me and
everyone goes home happy....................

RFL feel the future's bright
Teamtalk: RFL executive chairman Richard Lewis says England Under-
18s' series win over Australia on Friday has "injected new life" into
the junior game.
Lewis has led the celebrations of the Academy age-group team's 2-0
series win over the previously all-conquering Australian Schoolboys.
England Academy completed their historic success - their first over
the Joeys since tours started in 1972 - with a 22-12 second Test win
at Headingley on Friday night.
The Lions Cubs had set up the sequence by beating the Australian
Schoolboys 28-22 in the first Test at St Helens last Sunday.
Lewis said: "This is a thrilling series win for the British game and
is an indication that the Rugby Football League has set in motion the
kind of development programme that will enable us to become
competitive at the highest levels of the sport once again.
"The significance of the two Test wins will not be lost on the rest
of world rugby league either. The Australian Schoolboys have suffered
very few defeats during their existence and the English victory will
indicate to the world how serious we are about making a mark in the
international game.
"There is no doubt too that this series win has injected new life
into junior international Rugby League and, at the same time, given
notice that British rugby league is producing players with full Test
potential."

Waite's future - decision imminent
Teamtalk: David Waite is expected to decide over the weekend whether
he will remain as Great Britain coach next year.
The Australian has been told by the RFL that he cannot continue to
hold three jobs - national coach, performance director and technical
director, so he must decide whether to remain as coach or step aside
to concentrate on his other roles.
Waite, who has had his share of critics, coached Great Britain to its
first win over New Zealand since 1993 in last month's drawn series.
He has a three-year contract which expires next December.
"My brief when I came over here was to hand the job over to a British
coach and there are some good candidates," Waite told Rugby League
World recently.

Workington Town coach resigns
Total RL: Workington Town Paul Penrice has quit the club over a lack
of commitment from the club's players.
Town stalwart Penrice resigned on Friday morning after just five
players attended training the previous night.
His departure leaves Town coachless just a month ahead of their
opening National League Cup fixture at Rochdale, but Penrice
explained that his position had become untenable.
"To be quite honest I was just sick of the players' attitude and
commitment," Penrice told totalrl.com
"I've been involved at the club for over 16 years and this is the
worst I've ever know it. All the players seem to be interested in is
what they can get out of the club for themselves.
"I was wasting my time going down there and I couldn't afford to do
that any more."

Salary cap: Time to draw the line
By James Stewart, rleague.com: The NRL are making ‘policy on the
run’ in terms of dealing with clubs who breach the salary cap and it can
only lead to a public relations disaster for the NRL unless they draw a
line in the sand in terms of penalties.
The Bulldogs were found guilty of breaching the cap –
systematically – by an estimated $600,000 in 2001 and $400,000 in 2002.
They were fined $500,000 and lost 37 competition points and a terrific
chance of competing for the premiership. Added to the monetary penalty was
the additional revenue that would have been gained through prize money,
sponsorship, merchandise sales etc… and was estimated as up to $2 million
dollars.
The Wests Tigers were fined $145,000 back in August for not
disclosing $140,000 worth of player payments at the start of the
season. There have been other cases in recent years – basically a
monetary penalty for these smaller sized offences has been around the
size of the breach.
My question is where does the line get drawn in terms of reduction of
premiership points and so forth? Is it $200,000? $300,000? Or does it
depend on the teams standing on the ladder on the time and does it
depend on what period of the season we are in? ..more
