RLCM Coaching Quote for Thursday

"Take a drill, then try to think about how you can change the rules,
the size of the field, the time limit, the scoring systems, etc., to
get what you want to get out of it.

"Try to give [the players] a framework so that they can design their
own drills. I don't have a book of drills because every time I go out
there, I do something new.

"Drills are developed from the last training and reflect what we are
trying to achieve next week." - Wayne Smith ex NZ All Black coach

- From the Book 'Developing Decision Makers' by Lynn Kidman

'Developing Decision Makers' Part 1 and 2 will soon be available in
electronic ebook format from RLCM

TODAYS NEWS UPDATE 12/12/02
http://www.rlcm.com.au/news.shtml

* Gallop suprised at Bennett's criticism of golden point.

SMH: David Gallop expressed surprise at Brisbane coach Wayne
Bennett's criticism of plans to introduce a golden point rule next
season in drawn matches.

Bennett was unable to attend the NRL's annual conference last month,
but Gallop said that other Broncos officials had approved the
introduction of up to 10 minutes of extra time.

"It got 100 per cent support at the annual conference but
unfortunately Wayne wasn't there to participate in the debate," he
said.

* Judiciary threatens walkout if NRL ends defamation funding

By Brad Walter and Roy Masters, SMH: The National Rugby League's
entire seven-man judiciary has threatened to resign en-masse over the
NRL's decision to stop funding legal action by some panel members
against NSW Origin coach Phil Gould.

Judiciary commissioner Jim Hall, chairman Greg Woods, QC, and the
five-man panel of former players Royce Ayliffe, Ian Roberts, Darrell
Williams, Mal Cochrane and Jeff Hardy made the threat in a letter
sent to NRL chairman John Chalk last Friday.

They are furious with the NRL's decision not to fund their pursuit of
damages in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling in September that Gould
had defamed Hall, Ayliffe, Roberts and Williams.

The action was triggered by Gould's criticism of the tribunal's
decision to impose a six-match suspension on Dragons captain Craig
Smith last year made in comments on Macquarie radio's 2GB and in his
column in The Sun-Herald, published by John Fairfax, which also
publishes the Herald ..more

* Brisbane Broncos Leagues Club record a $628,493 loss in 2001-2002

By Steve Ricketts, Courier Mail: Brisbane Broncos Leagues Club Ltd is
reviewing its level of sponsorship for the football club's
recruitment and development program after recording a $628,493 loss
in 2001-2002.

The Leagues Club made a net operating profit of $171,507 before
$800,000 in sponsorship allocations to the football club and
community endeavours such as Camp Quality and the Kim Walters Choices
Program.

In the leagues club's annual report to be tabled at Sunday's 14th AGM
in Brisbane, chairman Steve Williams said the latest building and
development program completed in June – four months behind
schedule – was the major contributor to a 15 per cent drop in
revenue
to $16,219,000.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, liquidation of debts and
sponsorship were $2,634,000.

Williams said a three-year building program was completed at a cost
of $7.2million, with the club now having freehold title of the Red
Hill site from the Brisbane City Council and Broncos Football
Club ..more

* Sydney Roosters are under investigation

Daily Telegraph: NRL premiers the Sydney Roosters are under
investigation for alleged salary cap breaches.

And The Daily Telegraph understands at least two other clubs will
soon be exposed as having exceeded the NRL's $3.25 million limit.

There is no suggestion the Roosters will be stripped of their Telstra
Premiership because the salary indiscretions are nowhere near as
serious as the infamous Bulldogs case earlier this year.

But NRL chief executive David Gallop last night confirmed there
were "unresolved issues" at the Roosters ..more

* Salford set to sign Gavin Clinch

By Simon Kerr: Gavin Clinch could be a Salford City Reds player by
the end of the week.

But the Willows outfit may have to pay Halifax Blue Sox for the
services of the Irish international half-back.

Clinch has been allowed to leave the Super League side but is still
contracted to the New Shay club until next November.

"We are in dialogue with Halifax at the moment and there are a few
issues that need to be sorted out," confirmed Steve Simms, Salford's
director of coaching ..more

* Whitehaven in bid to run Academy team

By Simon Kerr: Ambitious Whitehaven RL club are chasing 20,000 in a
bid to run an Academy team next season.

Chairman Barry Richardson, admits that's what it would take - and the
finances are the main stumbling block for a scheme everybody wants to
press on with.

He added: "There are basically two competitions for Academy/Under-
21's and Academy/Under-18's and our choice would be the senior end.

"We are currently talking with a couple of firms about getting
involved in sponsorship for this side, and I think we'd all like to
see it come-off," said the chairman.

The Under-21's are allowed to use three over-age players in their
matches so that would suit Whitehaven best as they have a senior
squad of 31 players to keep happy and provide games for ..more

* Craig Poucher returns after spending three hours in Sydney

RL World: Former Hull threequarter Craig Poucher has had yet another
change of mind with regards to joining London.

He left England last Saturday to join the Broncos at their training
camp at Gosford, but returned home after spending only three hours in
Sydney.

Poucher explained, "It was on the flight that I began to question
whether I was making the right decision. I wasn't totally convinced
about the move to London and during the flight I began to think this
wasn't the move for me.

"By the time I arrived in Sydney I knew it wasn't right and it was
then I decided I wanted to come home. I got off the plane,
immediately made my decision to come back and booked myself on the
next available flight to England."

* Halifax to pull out of December 29 clash with Huddersfield

By Chris Roberts, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

Infirmary Cup opponents Halifax have told the Giants they plan to
pull out of the December 29 clash at the McAlpine.

The Calderdale club are embroiled in disputes with several senior
players, which is affecting their preparations for the start of the
new Super League campaign.

And the traditional festive clash with the Giants appears to have
been caught in the crossfire.

"The news that Halifax are intending to pull out is a massive blow,"
said Giants chief executive Ralph Rimmer, who is now contacting other
clubs to try and fix up an alternative contest.

"But we can't force anyone to play a pre-season friendly, and I fully
understand Halifax's reasons for not wanting to play ..more

* Nathan McAvoy Set to Leave Bulls

Nathan McAvoy is set to leave the 2002 World CLub Champions for rugby
union. The centre has failed to sign a new deal with Bradford after
weeks of negotiations and looks set to pursue a new challenge by
switching codes.

At one stage he looked to be following Henry Paul to Gloucester but
the deal fell through after the Zurich Premership side ran out of
money.

But the Bulls pin-up, axed for the Grand Final, appears to be poised
for a move to union, with Saracens thought to be the most likely
destination ..more

* Jamie Langley leads charge against Australia

After defeating the seemingly invincible touring Australian
Schoolboys for the first time in thirty long years, history beckons
the England Academy side to Headingley on Friday evening (7.00pm.)
with the chance to make it a clean sweep in the bi-Test series, and
that would be a huge boost for Rugby League in this country.

Leading the charge for England once more will be Jamie Langley, for
the first time on Yorkshire soil when he will be backed by a coach
load of fans from Normanton, his home village and his very first
rugby league club.

Along with fellow Bradford Bulls player Chris Bridge, Langley had a
solid match against the Aussies, and Head Coach Mike Gregory has had
no hesitation in going for the same squad in his bid to make it a
clean sweep.

Already, the 28-22 First Test victory against what is universally
acknowledged to be the finest Rugby League system worldwide, has set
the bells ringing around the Rugby League globe. Mike Gregory
however, knows full well that Friday's Test will be just as tough, if
not tougher than last weekend's ..more

* Chris Anderson wants Kangaroos coach job again

Sportswatch: Chris Anderson's future as Australian rugby league coach
is likely to be discussed at an ARL board meeting next week.

Anderson has announced he wants to retain the post, but needs to
fight off a challenge from the Queensland Rugby League if he is to
continue.

QRL chief executive Ross Livermore reiterated the northern body's
belief that Anderson should be replaced, preferably by a coach not
involved with a National Rugby League club ..more

* Mike Gregory expects a backlash in the Second Test

Sporting Life: England academy coach Mike Gregory expects to face an
Australian backlash in the second and final Test at Headingley on
Friday.

Gregory's under-18 side take on the Australian schoolboys having
ended a 30-year wait for a maiden victory in the fixture and can
clinch an unlikely series win in Leeds this week.

Gregory said: "We know that we will have a really tough game on our
hands on Friday. The Aussies will be hurting. They were disappointed
after Sunday's game - that's a feeling they are not used to and won't
want to feel again.

"But for us, the job is only half done. We don't want to be
remembered as a side which beat Australia once but couldn't back up
and do it again."

* Robbie Beckett set to join Wests Tigers

Foxsports: The Wests Tigers will have extra zip in their backline
next season with veteran winger Robbie Beckett set to join the club.

A proven tryscorer with more than 60 tries to his name, Beckett has
returned from England hopeful of signing with Tim Sheens' Tigers.

Beckett, who played eight seasons with the Penrith Panthers, is still
only 29.

And as a dual City Firsts representative and an Australian Nines
player, he could bring a wealth of experience to the Tigers.

"Robbie is a proven performer and a good trainer and it will be a
boost if we can come to terms," Sheens said.

"He can get over the line and will be a good influence on the young
players in the club."

While Sheens has signed veterans in Beckett and Michael Buettner, he
will also introduce a host of talented young players to first grade.
