COACHING QUOTE - By Sir Alex Ferguson, Manager Manchester United,
referring to Eric Cantona

" ....he applied himself flawlessy but it was at the end of our
session that really impressed me. As his team-mates were vanishing
from the pitch, he approached me and asked if he could have the
assistance of two players.

'What for?' I asked. 'To practice' he replied.

Many people have justifiably acclaimed Eric Cantona as a catalyst who
had a crucial impact on our successes while he was with the club
[Manchester United] but nothing he did in matches meant more than the
way he opened my eyes to the indispensability of practice. Practice makes
players."

Decision-making skills can be learnt.
By Gary Roberts 09/12/02

Remember Wally Lewis' tackle on Michael O'Connor in a State of Origin
at Lang Park, 'Alfie' Langer's field goal Game 2 State of Orgin 1992',
Brett Seymour's kick on the 3rd play 10 - 15 m out from St George
Illawarra's line in 2002.

They were all instinctive plays by players who before they
implemented them knew that the play had a very good chance of being
successful.

One of the major contributions a champion player brings to a team is
their decisions are normally correct and they seem to have all the
time in the world to make a decision.

Nine times out of ten the decision is correct and the crowd and
commentators sing their praises and are in awe of the brilliance witnessed.

How do champion players have this skill and ordinary players struggle
with making decisions and having the time to perform it correctly?

Champion players do have certain qualities that can separate them
from the ordinary players and some of their assets are size, strength,
speed, agility, reflexes, endurance and intelligence. But most players
playing at NRL or SL level have these qualities.

The champion player has a natural instinct in their game to
continually make the correct decision and being in the right place at the
right time.

Why don't other players have a similar trait?

Premiership winning coach Ricky Stuart believes that a form of
decision-making can be taught to all players on the training fields.

He said players must ask themselves questions whilst they are under
pressure and mentally fatigue on the training field to develop a
decision-making technique.

" You have to coach the actual thought process into their minds. The
question should be 'what am I doing' and a answer could be 'what
should I be doing and what should I be thinking now'

" The more you talk about it to the players and the more you bring it
up in training, the more it gets into their mind and the more likely
they will take it from the practise field to the football field.

" It is then, that it becomes instinctive.

" I know some players would never think during the game about 'where
am I now' and 'what should I be thinking now' but the good players
know those things.

The team's halfback, hooker and five-eight must always know the
tackle count, the score is and how long is left on the clock." Stuart
concluded

By doing these mental exercises and asking questions of themselves in
training, players start to realise of other possible playing or field
positions they should be putting themselves into for when the time
comes to make a decision during the game.

A coach must re-enforce a constant thought process in the minds of
his players and have them asking themselves possibly three simple
questions.

If this is done correctly a pattern of taking the correct options
maybe developed.

To reiterate Ricky Stuart's thoughts, the questions the player could
ask during training are:

1. Where am I?
2. What should I be doing now?
3. What should I be thinking now?

These three questions should advance to a normal thought practice on
the training field and if reinforced correctly with the coach
questioning and searching for feedback from his players during a
training session, it may lead to being a natural characteristic in a
players mind when they are in the heat of battle during a game, where
one decision can sometime win or lose the match.

Coaching a Country Football Team

Ken Kennedy with Ashley Bradnam

When the local supporters of the Ivanhoes club in
Cairns peeked in on new coach Ken Kennedy’s initial
training sessions with the club, few of them predicted
the perrenial also-rans to be in for a successful
season. ‘Who is this bloke?’ they would quip behind
not-so-subtle muffled snickers, ‘I’ve never seen anyone
train a team like this before’.

Success has a canny knack of altering a fan’s
perspective. In his debut season with Ivanhoes,
Kennedy steered the club to the Grand Final; not a
bad feat considering they finished the year before with
the wooden spoon. The obvious question is how did
he do it?

“It’s not so much a question of how I did it”, says
Kennedy, “It’s more a case of looking at the way
country Rugby League clubs operate as a whole and
then making the necessary changes to introduce a
successful culture into the club”.

According the Kennedy, one of the most important
disciplines a coach must possess is time management.
With most country clubs operating on a restricted time
frame (two or three training sessions maximum per
week) the organised coach will have a better chance
to get the most out of his players. Correct and thorough
planning and preparation starts with the head coach,
who in turn is responsible for the men under him.

“You need to ask yourself, what role am I going to
play at this club? Some coaches decide to only take
control of the top team, where others elect to be
responsible for all senior teams, which I think is a lot
healthier. In my current position I have the role of
Director of Coaching, and that gives me responsibility
for the development of the club as a whole from the
Under Sevens through to the A Grade. To be in such
a big role, it is absolutely imperative that I have a
good reliable support staff in place”.

Kennedy concurs with the theory that a strong club is
built from the ground up, and while the A Grade
enjoyed terrific on field triumph in 2001, Kennedy
says one of his most satisfying achievements has been
watching the juniors develop.

“The junior coaching has been my number one
priority. We have introduced and carried out a number
of coaching updates focussing on player’s skill
development and ensuring there is a good flow of
skilled players moving through the grades. In a way it
is insurance for the coming years. By teaching the
players the correct aspects and skills as juniors, you
don’t have to go through it again when they reach
senior level, when quite often the players have been
taught incorrectly.................MORE

David Peachey to quit as Sharks captain

Daily Telegraph: David Peachey will stun the Cronulla club by standing down
as captain.

Star halfback Brett Kimmorley, who The Daily Telegraph revealed on Saturday
is poised to sign a five-year deal with the club, will take over the reins.

Peachey has done a superb job as Sharks captain since the retirement of
Andrew Ettingshausen at the end of the 2000 season.

But a fortnight ago, Peachey informed coach Chris Anderson he wanted to
spend more time on other issues, specifically his off-field work helping
young Aboriginal children.

A tight-lipped Anderson refused to comment on the situation yesterday,
other than saying of Peachey's captaincy: "I haven't got a problem. ..more

NZH: Alister Atkinson, one of the finest New Zealand backrow forwards, has

England Academy 28 defeated Australian Schoolboys 22

Sporting Life: The England Academy turned history on its head to record
their first-ever victory over the Australian Schoolboys in the first Test
at St Helens today.

The young Kangaroos, who have not lost to a team from outside Australasia
since being formed in 1972, went down 28-22 in what was their 100th fixture.

Mike Gregory's England made a flying start, running in tries from Dwayne
Barker and Gareth Hock.

The Aussies fought back but Matt Gardner put England back in front after a
superb move and Tommy Gallagher followed him over soon after.

The tourists rallied late on but the Academy held firm to take a 1-0 lead
into the second Test at Headingley on Friday.

Power struggle is more trouble than it's worth

By Phil Gould, The Sun-Herald: Rugby league is a simple game. It's
people that make it complex. Given that people are responsible for
all decision making, it's no wonder nothing in our game comes easy.
We are constantly dealing with complexities as we fumble and bumble
our way along.

One such web of intrigue is the relationship between the NRL which,
despite its denials, is the governing body of the game in Australia,
and the other potential power-wielding groups - the Rugby League
Players' Association and the player managers.

It is difficult to describe the relationship. The words "uneasy
peace" come quickly to mind but I look at it as more like sizing each
other up before any real punches are thrown.

The NRL is keen to move down the road towards the future of rugby
league but it appears to want to shed some of the excess baggage it
believes it has been carrying, so complexities are kept to a minimum.

Let me start with the Players' Association ..more

Phil Gould takes Origin to new level with 30-player squad

By Danny Weidler, The Sun-Herald: State of Origin coach Phil Gould is
pushing the ARL to have a 30-man Blues squad picked before the season
kicks off.

Gould drew the series with Queensland this year and is already
planning his assault on Wayne Bennett's team for 2003. Having a squad
settled before the season starts is looming as an essential part of
his preparation.

Gould has moved quickly to formulate his plan for 2003 after deciding
last month that he would coach again. In addition to a pre-season get-
together, he'd like the squad to gather again a month before the
series.

Central to Gould's thinking is the process of blooding young or
inexperienced players in the 30-man squad so they are ready to step
up to Origin. The likes of Luke Lewis, Craig Wing, Willie Mason and
Craig Fitzgibbon may benefit most from Gould's plan ..more

Mark Riddell confronts weight of expectation

By Cameron bell, Daily Telegraph: St George Illawarra hooker Mark
Riddell powered up the Wanda sandhills on Thursday after a heart-to-
heart talk with coach Nathan Brown convinced him to continue his
rugby league career.

Told to lose up to 7kg or play in the premier league, formerly first
division, Riddell was fined $3000 by the Dragons for missing a
training session and then questioned his future in the game.

Brown insists the expectation of others was the major factor behind
Riddell's knee-jerk reaction to quit ..more

Tony Smith has hails the fitness of Super League squad

By Chris Roberts, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner Delighted Giants
coach Tony Smith has hailed the fitness of his players on their
return to pre-season training.

His newly-promoted Super League squad reported back to the McAlpine
after their six-week break in excellent shape.

Apart from broken leg victim Paul Reilly, who expects to be back in
action in March, all Smith's English-based players are setting their
sights on the Infirmary Cup showdown with Halifax at the McAlpine on
December 29.

And the Australian boss couldn't be happier.

"The fitness level of all the boys has been tested, and it's clear
they have really been looking after themselves," he said

"For the first week back, I couldn't be more pleased with the
excellent condition they are in."

Ian Millward calls Sydney Roosters bluff

Team Talk: Ian Millward has reacted to criticism from Sydney Roosters
by saying St Helens would be happy to have their clash switched Down
Under.

The Roosters are still fuming over the Rugby Football League's
decision to block their plans to stage a warm-up game against Widnes
prior to the World Club Challenge on 14 February.

Millward claims to have some sympathy for the Australian champions
and offered a simple solution to the problem - switch the match to
Australia.

"Most people are probably thinking we want Sydney teams to come over
here so we have the conditions to ourselves," the outspoken Saints
coach said ..more

Ryan Cross back in training

By Matthew O'Neill, rleague.com: Injury plagued Roosters centre Ryan
Cross has resumed pre-season training with the club and is hopeful
that he'll be ready for the start of the 2003 Telstra Premiership
season.

Cross played only four matches this year and 10 matches in 2001.
Cross has been a target for the ARU but has opted to remain at the
Roosters as they have covered his injury and income expenses in the
last two years.

The emergence of Shannon Hegarty and Justin Hodges as top class
centres is going to make it hard for Cross to win back a permanent
place in the Roosters first grade side.

Cross' big hope other than injury to Hegarty or Hodges is the fact
Brett Mullins has retired and the possibility of Ricky Stuart moving
Hegarty onto the wing and Cross playing left centre.

The Roosters will start the 2003 season as one of the teams most
favoured to win the premiership along with Newcastle, Canterbury,
Brisbane and Cronulla.

Coach Nathan Brown spells it out for Dragons

SMH: Rookie coach Nathan Brown has already faced a test of his
authority - and passed, writes Brad Walter.

At the end of a tough three-hour workout in temperatures hovering
around 30C on Thursday afternoon, rookie St George Illawarra coach
Nathan Brown called his players together and told them that no one
was to leave WIN Stadium until they had watched an unwitting Mark
Riddell do some extra training.

Riddell, the Dragons' star hooker, had failed to attend a session
last Saturday for players either needing to shed weight or improve
their fitness. And then - after being told to take time off to sort
out the personal problems he blamed for his absence - had turned up
on Monday without any intention of training as his teammates were
forced to endure 11 gruelling 240-metre circuits.

Known as "gasses", the circuits - each comprising four 60m sprints
with push-ups in between - are a penalty imposed on the team for
misdemeanours during training, such as being late or not putting in
the required effort.

Riddell's indiscretion was more serious and he had already been fined
$3,000. But Brown wanted the rest of the Dragons' 58-man squad to
witness the punishment being handed to the player who took over his
No9 jersey when a neck injury forced him into premature retirement
two years ago ..more

NZH: A sign of the times? Perhaps. In a rare coming together of the

Paul Wellens hopes to be fit for Sydney Roosters game

RL World: St Helens are hopeful that full back Paul Wellens will be
fit for the start of the new season and, in particular, for their
World Club Challenge against Sydney Roosters on 14th February.

The Great Britain international, who is still recovering from the
fractured cheekbone sustained in last season's Super League Grand
Final, has recently undergone surgery to rectify a persistent knee
problem.

The surgeons found his knee to be in a far worse state than
anticipated, although they say that the surgery went well and that
the patient will make a full recovery.

League steps up in Auckland stadium game

By Peter Jessup: Stadium wars are about to break out again next week
in Auckland, the city with no decent stadiums.

It's an indictment on the pathetic civic leadership that the larger
region has suffered over a long period. A sign of the Government's
lack of interest is that a privately-owned sports club will be left
to determine whether New Zealand's largest city ever does get a
proper stadium.

On Thursday, the Auckland Rugby League will try to win the backing of
fans and Auckland City ratepayers as it appeals to the public for
support for a $94 million plan to redevelop Carlaw Park ..more

Tony Smith confident he has the right balance for Huddersfield

By Chris Roberts, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner: Upbeat Giants
coach Tony Smith believes his squad has the right blend of youth and
experience to make a positive impact in Super League VIII.

Smith's English-based senior players returned for pre-season training
yesterday, with experienced centre Matt Calland the latest to have
come on board.

At 31, the former Bradford Bulls ace will be the oldest player on the
Giants' first-team books.

But even with Calland added to the squad, the average age of the
Huddersfield players is under 24.

And he believes that's just about spot-on

York City Knights set a deadline

By Simon Kerr, Natioanal League: York City Knights chief executive
Steve Ferres has set a target of December 19 for completing the
building of the squad for the new season, writes Tony Curtis.

Ferres and player-coach Paul Broadbent have already recruited 11
players for the historic first-ever season of York's new professional
rugby league side - with Hull the Kingston Rovers' trio of Mark Cain,
Alex Godfrey and Richie Hayes, along with Darren Callaghan and Graham
Hallas, providing a backbone of experience.

However, Ferres wants to add ten more players in the next fortnight
