RLCM Coaching Quote for Friday
"Team orientation refers to how a player fits within the group. Is their
influence on and of the field benefical and positive? Are they, in spite of
personal disappointments or issues, able to contribute usefully? I do not
know of any objective measure that enables one to determine such issues. It
is not clear how one best makes such judgments, but at different times and
for different reasons they must be made."

TODAYS NEWS UPDATE 06/12/02

* Stacey Jones Is Tops In NZ
By Ali Nolan, League Unlimited: No doubt about it, Stacey Jones is the top
Rugby League player in New Zealand at the moment.
The NZ league awards dinner was held last night and Stacey Jones picked up
the overall Players Award as well as the Personality of the Year. The
double has only been achieved by one other player, current Kiwis coach Gary
Freeman.
Jones was the face of the League in New Zealand this year with the NZ
Warriors and the Kiwis. The other finalists for player of the year were
Nigel Vagana and Jerry Seu Seu.
NZ Warriors stand-off Lance Hohaia was named rookie of the year after very
capable performances throughout the NRL season for the Warriors, and in the
Kiwi tour that has just ended.
The Mt. Albert club in Auckland won the majority of the local awards.
Other awards included:
Referee of the year, Bill Shrimpton (Auckland)
Bartercard Cup player of the year, Lee Finnerty (Mt Albert)
Bartercard Cup coach of the year, John Ackland (Mt Albert).

* Disgraced Bulldog directors stand for re-election
By Dean Ritchie, Daily Telegraph: Five members of the disgraced board that
resigned amid the Bulldogs salary cap scandal want their jobs back and have
nominated for football club re-election.
George Coorey, Roger Harborne, Alan Schwebel, Keith Lotty and Peter Lander
will be standing at the club's AGM on February 9 next year.
It is understood only 350 football club members will vote. Nominations
closed last Saturday afternoon ..more

* David Fairleigh shelves comeback
NRL Club News
Edited by Brad Walter, SMH: Former Test forward David Fairleigh recently
discussed the possibility of a comeback with Knights coach Michael Hagan
but after playing for the club in 2000 for little money he has decided
against returning to the field.
Instead, Fairleigh will be an assistant to first-division coach Mal Graham.
A similar offer to former Canberra and North Queensland prop Brett
Hetherington was withdrawn on Tuesday night, while an approach to former
Souths captain Adam Muir has been ruled out due to salary cap restrictions.
Skipper Andrew Johns will today undergo groin surgery but is expected back
in full training by the new year.

* Hibiscus Coast Raiders pair sign for NZ Warriors
Hibiscus Coast Raiders coach Tony Benson has no doubts Dallas Rennie and
Karl Te Mata will make a big impact for the New Zealand Warriors in the
2003 National Rugby League (NRL).
The duo were named in the Warriors squad at the club's launch at North
Harbour Stadium.
Their selection on a fulltime basis is a reflection of the Raiders' success
over the past couple of seasons when they won the Bartercard Cup in 2001
and were runners-up this year ..more

* Queensland Emerging Origin squad for 2003 announced
Courier Mail: The Queensland Academy of Sport yesterday announced the
latest Emerging Origin squad with Cowboys veteran Matt Sing the stunning
selection.
Sing, 27, has not played Origin football since the third match of the 2000
series but his club-record 16 tries for the Cowboys last season made
Bennett sit up and take notice and there is a chance the Rockhampton
product could be recycled in Origin football in 2003.
The newcomers in the squad are Penrith prop Ben Ross and Parramatta centre
Willie Tonga, originally from the Sunshine Coast and Cherbourg
respectively. Ross played for St George Illawarra last season.
Queensland Academy of Sport Emerging State of Origin Squad to go into camp
in Brisbane from January 23-26: Michael Luck, Matt Sing, Matt Bowen
(Cowboys); Justin Hodges, Shannon Hegarty, Chris Flannery, Michael Crocker
(Roosters); Corey Parker, Scott Prince (Broncos); Jonathon Thurston
(Bulldogs); Brent Webb, Mark Tookey (Warriors); Ashley Harrison
(Rabbitohs), Willie Tonga (Eels).

* Wayne Bennett stays on to coach Queensland
Steve Ricketts, Courier Mail: Another classic State of Origin series is
assured after Wayne Bennett confirmed yesterday he would go head to head
with Phil Gould again in 2003.
Coaches Bennett and Gould have unfinished business after the 2002 series
was tied with Queensland retaining the Origin trophy courtesy of a
last-minute 18-18 draw in the third match at Telstra Stadium in Sydney ..more

* Richard Horne extends Hull deal
Great Britain Test star Richard Horne has agreed a new long-term contract
with Hull that will keep him at the club until 2006.
Last season's Super League Young Player of the Year still has a year to run
on his current deal but is expected to put pen to paper on a three-year
extension when he returns from holiday in Tenerife.
The gifted utility-back has long been a target for rival Super League
clubs, as well as rugby union, but is delighted to be staying with his
hometown club.
"It is exciting times at Hull, especially with the move into the new
stadium next year, and I am just delighted to be a part of it," he told the
Hull Daily Mail ..more

Commercial Department that is based at Sovereign House in Leeds city centre
and contains the sport's commercial, corporate sales, marketing and media
operations. He will start his new job with the sport on 2 January 2003.

* Leigh face cash crisis
By Dave Hadfield, The Independent : Leigh, just one game away from winning
promotion to Super League at the end of the season, are facing a financial
crisis that could see the club going into administration. The club's
chairman, Mike Nolan, is returning from holiday, but says that there have
already been consultations with a potential administrator.
"I had a group of people ready to invest in the club, but others on the
board didn't want that," he said. "The result is that there isn't the money
there to meet our costs."
Nolan denies that Leigh's plight has been caused by over-spending in
pursuit of promotion and added: "The debt now is around £500,000, the same
as it was when I came here two years ago."

* Mark 'Sharky' Robinson tossing up European rugby or league
North Harbour rugby captain Mark Robinson is heading to Europe tomorrow to
investigate options for his future, after missing out on a place in the
Blues Super 12 franchise.
Robinson was spotted lunching in Auckland yesterday with senior management
from the New Zealand Warriors league club, but today said he was a friend
of Warriors chief executive Mick Watson and they had just been talking
about opportunities and possibilities.
"We happened to get busted (by TV cameras) and it looked a lot worse than
it probably was," he said.
He hoped to be in a position to make a decision about his future by
Christmas, and said he would consider joining the Warriors if that option
arose ..more

* Chris Feather to make big impact for leeds - Sinfield
By Phil Gordos, BBC: New Leeds skipper Kevin Sinfield says Chris Feather
could turn out to major signing for the Headingley club.
The 21-year-old prop earned rave reviews for his performances for Super
League rivals Wakefield Trinity Wildcats last season.
And Sinfield believes that Feather, who weighs nearly 18st and stands 6ft
4in tall, will only improve now he is at the Rhinos.
"No disrespect to Wakefield, but I am sure Chris will really start to shine
following his move to Headingley," said Sinfield ..more
