RLCM COMMENT
* Should Great Britain copy Australia's style or develop their own?
By Gary Roberts 24/11/02

The great Australian centre of the 1930's Dave Brown made a fact finding
trip to the UK in the 1950's when he was the NSWRL coaching liaison
officer, a forerunner to the NSWRL Coaching Academy staff. His mission was
to study the English game and report how the game could be improved in
Australia.

During that period, the late 1940's through to the early 1950's Australia
was struggling against Great Britain.

Brown reported back to the NSWRL and advised that they should break from
tradition in playing a English based game, develop a culture and ethos that
was different from the game in Great Britain and create an individual
coaching curriculum for Australian players and coaches.

Committees were formed and a style of playing and coaching rugby league was
developed. The dissemination of information learned was forwarded to all
involved.Today, all States now have coaching offices with highly qualified
development staff to assist new and experienced coaches with all facets of
the game. Dave Brown pic

Although the game has had its lows and highs over recent years the style of
rugby league played by Australians has been the dominant method of playing
and has been the major influence in international rugby league since the
1970's, possibly thanks to Dave Brown's recommendations.

With the monkey off his back via the win and some silverware in the trophy
cabinet, is it time for Great Britain coach David Waite to take another
position in the coaching organization in England or remain at National coach.

Watching Great Britain defeat New Zealand a question comes to mind, 'Are
they starting to play like Australians?' David Waite is an excellent
teacher of rugby league, but is he giving to Great Britain a culture and
ethos that Dave Brown advised the NSWRL to adopt all those years ago.

And if so is this good for the international game in the long term?

David Waite proved that by giving Great Britain access to world class
coaching they can compete with New Zealand and hopefully Australia. The
education and teaching that Great Britain have experienced over this recent
Test campaign has proved fruitful and they displayed a competitive attitude
and developed a game that consisted of a composure not seen for several years.

For the game to be strong in the UK, coaches must be educated in the latest
techniques and latest thoughts on the game and it must be available for all
levels. Reports from the UK, say this is starting to happen and coaches are
impressed with what Waite has in place already.

But should David Waite be putting in place a rugby league development
program or system that may copy the Australian style?

It will assist in the education of coaches in the UK, but shouldn't the RFL
and BARLA, governing coaching bodies of the game in the UK develop the
system.

Peter Corcoran long time ARL National Coaching Manager and now Education
Director with the ARL Foundation said, "David should remain as the national
coach, and it should not be his role to dictate the future of how the game
is played in that country, their own administrators have to plan that.

"They have to put into place their programs and strategies, similar to when
Dave Brown recommended that Australia create its own culture."

RLCM ARTICLE
Great Britain win the Albert Baskerville Trophy
By Gary Roberts 24/11/02

Great Britain were the superior team in the Third Test match at JJB Stadium
in Wigan where they came a away 16 - 10 winners over New Zealand receive to
the Albert Baskerville trophy. This silverware is Great Britain's first
trophy since 1972.

It may be asked who is Albert H. Baskerville. For the record he played an
important role in getting rugby league on a firm footing in New Zealand and
in 1907 organised the inaugural international tour taking his New Zealand
All Gold side to Australia and Britain, thus the trophy is named after him.

Although Great Britain made more effective line breaks and had many
opportunities, they were not getting the points on the scoreboard, so it
would have been pleasing for the Great Britain coaching staff to watch how
they maintained their composure and kept coming at New Zealand.

The Third Test showed, if the little things are done correctly they can
grow into creating momentum in attack, pressure in defence and allow the
team that does them correctly to gain the upper hand, Great Britain were in
this position most of the game.

What were the little things that they were doing correctly?

Their communication in the defensive line appeared very good. The line had
shape and its purpose was more advanced than previously. This allowed for a
better understanding of the defence by the players involved and of their
roles in it and aided their confidence as the game progressed.

Three effective defenders into the majority of tackles, with the third
player in being well tutored on his responsibilities retreating back to his
position quickly once the peel off began.

A problem that surfaced several times was with inexperienced marker
defence. Playing against a dynamic dummy half runner such as Richard Swain,
once he noted wingers and centres as 1st and 2nd markers or confusion by
defending players getting back to their feet, it was easy pickings for him
to scoot from dummy half.

Great Britain's catching and passing looks to have improved over the past
weeks. Maybe they should practice carrying the ball with a two- hand carry,
it could cause some doubt in the defender's minds.

Given regular games with the level of intensity, the Great Britain game
would continue to improve.

Hopefully the international game in the UK can built from this plateau and
become a major rival to Australia once again.

EXTRACT FROM RLCM BOOK 28 printed 2002
http://www.rlcm.com.au/editions.htm

...............my belief is that if you train relative
to what you play you get that mindset of what you do on the
training field carries over to the game. Having said that you
need to be careful not to take the fun out of training
– the guys should feel free to have a joke and a bit
of a laugh on their way to the drinks station, relax a
bit and then get back into it. That’s why the breaks
are important, a let down before you ask them to lift
again. When we put them under intensity when
they’re fatigued we’re mostly looking to see what
decision they are making. It’s not the fitness that
I’m looking at, it’s the decisions my players are
making when they are tired and under pressure. Good
decision-making is so important in our game.

RLCM: Are you happy with the intensity your
players are showing on the field?

Ricky Stuart: No I’m not. I think we have a long
way to go and have a lot of progression left in us.
Our execution in attack is a long way off where I
want it to be and basically that gets back to our
decision-making. It’s the little things, what pattern
we play for this set of six, the area we receive the
football in and then where we turn it back over. We
can and need to have better decision-making in our
side. When we watch the videos of our games I ask
the players what they were thinking at a specific
time: ‘What was your thinking when you passed this
ball?’ I want them to accept control for their
decisions. I want to be realistic, I know the players
have adrenalin running through them and are under
enormous pressure so, I obviously take that into
account and I think being a former player allows me
to appreciate that. I have told the players that I will
never give them unrealistic feedback and never want
to be unrealistic as a coach but when I’m realistic, I
know my feedback is correct.

RLCM: Can you coach awareness into players?

Ricky Stuart: You need to get the players asking
themselves ‘where am I, what am I doing and what
should I be thinking about now’. I guess that’s
awareness and I do think you can coach that thought
process into their minds. ‘What am I doing and what
should I be doing’ is the way I tend to put it. The
more you bring it up and talk about it the more it
begins to get into their minds and the better the
chance of it filtering through to their footy on the
field. And what you are hoping for is that they will
do it so long and so regularly that it will become
instinctive. Your half backs and five-eighths should
always know what the game situation is: what tackle
it is, what the score is and how long is left on the
clock. They are the computers.
