Peter Roe, Swindon's new coach arrived in Australia today [Sunday] and he
will join other overseas coaches Halifax's Gareth Pratt and NZ's Doug King
as special guests at the quarterly RLCM Coaching Luncheon on Wednesday
which will be attended by a further 12 other Brisbane and Gold Coast rugby
league coaches in a informal chat and exchange of ideas.
The coaches will view a presentation of the SportsCode Digital Video
Analysis System [see Coaching Extract below].
Digital video analysis systems are rapidly becoming the coaching tool for
sporting individuals and organizations around the world.

* COMMENT: RLCM Congratulates the Great Britain Team and David Waite.
David Waite and his players are to be praised on a magnificent effort at
Huddersfield last night.
David, would be proud that his players executed his game plan to the best
of their ability and they never retreated for the entire 80 minutes.
RLCM has been critical at times of the UK defence, but I acknowledge the
effort that was put in last night and of the vast improvement from the
previous week.
David Waite has proved his importance to the international game, by the
drawn game last night.
The game of Rugby League needs a competitive Great Britain, hopefully with
the new coaching structures that are being implemented by David Waite in
the UK this may come to fruition and we can see the new Great Britain
players performing at the same level of intensity as was exhibited last night.
Although some criticism may have been levelled at the Great Britain team
through the lack of results, I would advise those critics and class me as
one, study the video of the 2nd Test.
The defensive line and markers were nice to watch.
Well done, Great Britain and David Waite.

* Visiting Coaches talk tackling with John Dixon
By Gary Roberts Rugby League Writer
RLCM is playing host to three overseas coaches over the next week and last
Thursday two of the coaches Gareth Pratt from Halifax Blue Sox and Doug
King from NZ were the guests of the Brisbane Broncos.
The coaches spoke with John Dixon, a Broncos assistant coach, who is charge
of the younger players at the club. The discussion was about tackling.
The game of Rugby league consists of two main principles and from these two
principles the game evolves -
Attack and Defence.
Firstly, before we move on to John Dixon's thoughts on how he develops the
young players into the Broncos defensive regime, read an extract from the
article by Roy Masters that appeared in the Inside League Book [Printed
1990] with the legendary coach Jack Gibson and what he said about Defence
in the '70's
" Now the modern coach is really conscious of defence.
"In past days selectors were only worried about whether a player could run
the ball. It did not matter if he couldn't tackle as long as he could
advance it.
"But with our defence the boy who could run the football wasn't so
successful because week after week we would jam our defence.
"We made that our number one priority. We gave recognition to players who
went well in defence. I'd read it out 'He made 17 tackles', 'He made three
in a row'.
"We drilled at it because, in the old days...not that long ago... if you
went to football training there was no such thing as spending one minute on
defence.
"They would spend one and a half hours running the football, but on Sunday
you are lucky to have the ball 50% of the time.
"In reality, at training the coach should spend 50% of the time on defence
and 50% on attack. That is what happens on game day." From Inside League
Book by Roy Masters printed 1990
Now back to the present, we hear of footwork, fast feet, same leg same
side, head in close, ball and all, smother tackles, edge defenders, ABC
defenders all terminology that refers to the art of the tackle and
tackling, a terminology that is reasonably new to the modern game.
Jack Gibson in the '70's may have been the first Rugby League coach in
Australia to pick up on the importance on defence in the game and spent
equal time on the training paddock involving defence and attack during the
same session.
But is the defensive game that is played at the NRL level starting to get
in the way of teaching the game at the junior level.
NRL coaches are always looking for a slight edge to get their club a win in
the tough world of NRL football, thus the terminology and jargon has evolved.
But does this assist in the development of players at the junior level.
John Dixon an assistant coach in the powerful Brisbane Broncos organization
explains it simply, he advises that the systems and patterns that are
played in the professional game should be left up there with the super
coaches with Bennett, Smith, Chris and Daniel Anderson and the like, as
they strive to find a small advantage.
The junior game is about developing and educating players, for the long
term and a correct technique must be showed at a junior level before young
players move on to the senior level.
John Dixon explains, "I think the tackle is important. But coaches have
gone away from the tackle and we have got very much involved in defensive
systems and patterns and all sorts of things, and I think the basic tackle,
which is the 'one on one' tackle, has been neglected.
"The reason being why it has been neglected is that, a tackle is hard to do
and it can hurt. So, a lot of coaches at junior and senior level have got
away from teaching the 'one on one' art of tackling.
"It does not matter how big players are, or how small they are, players
will have to tackle big guys and the big guys will tackle little guys
"If a player cannot make a tackle 'one on one', then I reckon he is in
strife. Here, [Broncos] we make a great emphasis on making the tackle and
being able to tackle everybody, whether they are big, fast, slow, little or
whatever.
The method of tackling had changed over the years, in past days all
children were taught how do 'front on', 'side on' and 'rear' tackles all
around the legs, beginning with arms and hands around the buttocks area
with the head behind or at the side and bringing the player to the ground
by sliding down his legs with clasped arms, and the game saw great tacklers
develop and mature through this method. Possibly the best ever at this type
of tackle was the great cover defender Johnny Raper. A tackle around the
chest area 'front on' was rarely contemplated.
Nowadays figures indicate that only 10% of tackles are around the legs and
90% are around the chest area, the aim is to stop the ball being advanced.
Dixon differs with the method in vogue today, of using the high tackle to
stop the ball first; he states that the Broncos first action is to stop the
ball runner.
"I look at it different. At the Broncos we coach the junior players
different from most.
"I don't see a tackle that way [chest high, first] some people do emphasize
stopping the ball initially, but we work on primarily stopping the ball
runner first and then secondly we stop the ball.
"The majority of tackles nowadays are front-on, in the days gone by, we had
more emphasis on side on tackles and later we taught blocking tackles when
the players began coming more forward.
"So, for today's game, players need to be strong and lead with their head
and shoulders for all tackles whether, front on, side on, rear and they
have to be very good at it, but all tackles stem from the players ability
initially to make a one on one tackle.
"At the Broncos our primary target zone is from the belt line up and below
where the ball is carried [midriff] and that is for all tackles. The
midriff area is a part the body that the player moves the least.
The proof of the target zone of where to tackle is emphasized by the
magical ex Bronco ball runner Steve Renouf, who repeatedly when attempted
to be tackled low by a defender showed what a swerve of the hips and a
strong fend could do for an attacking player who came in to low too tackle
the champion centre.
"The belt line down to the knees was the tradition area target zone in the
past for a 'side on' tackle, but a player still has movement there, they
can open their body up or they can swivel their hips like Renouf would do
and beat you with a fend if a defender is committed to that lower target
area.
Footwork is another really key part of being a good defender; it can be
underestimated in tackling.
Although some great Bronco players such at Trevor 'The Axe' Gillmeister and
Gavan Allen could launch at a tackle with two feet planted firmly on the
ground it has been proven that this is not the footwork technique to use in
the modern game
Dixon continues, "Most tackles are missed because players don't use their
feet. To get to the tackle some players will plant their feet or they are
wide apart and waiting for the ball carrier to come to them, this is not a
correct technique. As a general rule the best defenders have one foot up
and one-foot back.
"Defenders are normally at the mercy of the ball carrier if he plants his
feet to early. The defender can get bumped, ran over, have no drive or
cannot move. This is where the jumper grabbers come from, or the tackle is
only shoulder contact or an arm stretch attempting to implement a tackle,
rather than moving into the tackle.
"The defender should take short steps to the tackle, so that if the ball
runner does shift, the defender can take his feet to where he wants to go.
"We [Broncos] don't over emphasize one leg from the other, or same
shoulder, same leg. Our take on it is as a long as one leg is in the air it
does not matter; you need the weight distribution through your stride, so
if it is near leg or off leg it doesn't make any difference to us.
"We don't coach it, but we are happy to have one leg in the tackle so, one
of the key components involved in tackling is good footwork, have one foot
up in the tackle, we teach one foot forward and other foot back." Dixon
concluded.

EXTRACT FROM RLCM BOOK 28 printed 2002
http://www.rlcm.com.au/editions.htm
* A simple game being enveloped by science
and technology.
By Steve Hunt
The information technology revolution has
transformed the way rugby league coaching is
conducted, to a point!
Through the advancement of technology, coaches
can now have reams of videotape examining the
individual skills and performance traits of a player
at their disposal within minutes.
They can measure post-match body distress by fluid
loss, monitor a players dietary intake and responses with the view
of achieving optimum physical performance, as well
as maximising recovery from injury – all through a
greater use of technology.
The technology revolution is being used to give
closely matched teams the winning edge. The
difference can even come down to something simple
like the composition and texture of a league jersey
and its role in keeping a player’s body temperature
down to avoid fatigue.
This has created a fine line between ‘paralysis by
analysis’and ‘roboting’ players and an overall
objective by clubs to gain superiority on the training
and playing.
The technological evolutions have created a sporting
paradox….because league is essentially a simple
game.
“It’s quite scary what IT can do,” says Sydney
Roosters football manager Brian Canavan.
“A simple example is that if we want to look at
Andrew Johns’ kicks off his right foot to the right
side of the field we can simply make a phone call
and have all of his seasons kicks down the line on
our computers within 20 minutes.
“You can have a look at Shane Webcke’s runs and
examine which is his preferred side of the ruck. Is
he a left hand or right hand ball carrier, does he drop
his shoulder at the line, before the line?
“You can request all this information and it’ll be on
a 10-minute video for you in 20 minutes.
Some clubs are probably one or two years more advanced
than us but virtually by the month technology
advances.”
So, is the technological wave a good or a bad thing?
According to Canavan, careful step-by-step
assessments are the key to ensuring technology is
used in a beneficial way for individual players and
the team.................
