MONDAYS COACHING QUOTE

"Successful defence depends on each player making correct decisions. This
decision making process is enchanced by good coaching and communication so
the player can:

1. Identify the problem
2. Decide on the correct action to take
3. Have the skill to execute that action ....."

Glenn Bayliss, ARL High Performance Coach from his article 'DEFENCE'
in RLCM Book 26

RLCM COMMENT- COMMENT WHY WERE THE GRAND FINALS SO CONTRASTING?
By Gary Roberts http://www.rlcm.com.au/book16.htm

St Helens played Bradford, the Sydney Roosters played the NZ
Warriors, two Grand Finals played on the opposite sides of the world
a couple of weeks apart.

The UK game kept fans and viewers gripped to their seats as the game
went from one end of the field to the other and resulted with a win
to St Helens after a drop goal by Sean Long.

On the other hand the NRL Grand Final a hard fought game with both
sides struggling to gain an advantage, it was a game of fierce
tackling and every yard gained was earned

Why were the games so contrasting?

They were played with different defence principles in the ruck area.
The philosophy of tackling in the Super League and NRL is poles
apart.

Taking nothing away from the UK game it is entertaining to watch.
But, the players tackle in a way that may have been taught to them at
schoolboy representative level.

NRL players and coaches have taken defence to a new level.

To begin with, ask yourself this question: 'why does NZ Warriors
player Kevin Campion have so many head clashes?' We will answer the
question as we move through the article.

Universally the centre of a game is the ruck area or the play the
ball, everything starts and ends with the ruck, so what is the
difference between Super League and NRL rucks.

A brief analysis of the two Grand Finals shows that two different
patterns of ruck defence were played.

The UK version leads to open football. The NRL version is a
game of mental toughness with aggressive tackling.

The Super League ruck defence normally begins with a one on one
tackle before another one possible two defenders come to assist. NRL
is more about having two players in the initial tackle with a two and
sometimes three players assisting.

An average Super League tackle will have only two players involved,
the NRL team, the Sydney Roosters occasionally had up to five players
involved in some of their tackles in their Grand Final.

Why? The Roosters were trying to create a six second play the ball
for the Warriors. The 1, 2 or 3 players come into the two-man tackle,
briefly dance with the ball carrier, before putting him to ground.

The subsequent peel off by the assisting defenders players, before
they revert back to their ruck defence positions, goes a long way in
gaining valuable seconds needed to dull the momentum of the attacking
team.

NRL markers are more effective and have definite roles to play with
the initial tackle, the Super League players seem more causal in
their approach which appears to be first marker chase second marker
hold.

If speed of playing the ball is one of the main objectives for an
attacking team in their aim to gaining superior field position to
exert extra pressure, then it should be an objective of the defending
team not to allow them the time or give them the easy yards to
achieve these aims.

But, watching the Super League Grand Final it appears the defences
were assisting the attack side by allowing them to play the ball
quickly. No effective system of defence could not be noticed in
either St Helens or Bradford in them attempting to gain a supremacy
in the in the ruck area.

A principle is to play your ball in 3 seconds and attempt to slow the
opposition's play the ball down to 6 seconds, simple enough to say,
and if a team can achieve it they are on the way to 'winning the game
on the ground'.

The difference in the two games could have been the 'dominant tackle'
factor and the technique used by the Super League players would not
be effective in the ever-changing NRL, nor is it effective at the
international level.

Now, getting back to the question about Kevin Campion. He plays at a
very high aggression level as to gain the upper hand in the tackle,
he is well balanced with his head and neck in an upright position.

His head leads him into the upper body of the ball carrier, as he
confronts him, his first contact is normally his head alongside the
ball carriers face, his arms and chest follow, from this point he can
gain can control of the tackle and becomes the dominant player.

This method is a differential style of tackling and is both brave and
courageous, but it is extremely effective in gaining the dominance
that is required in the NRL. Sometimes it does not work to
perfection, thus the clash of heads and more stitches.

Now, if a team can learn from Campion's style of tackling and pick up
on the Sydney Roosters gang tackles, initiate an effective peel off,
so the ball carrier could be 'turtled' facing the wrong way so a
possible 5 or 6 second tackle might eventuate. Then one team may
dominate and win the ground over the other.

The difference between the two Grand Finals?

COACHING WITH COMPUTERS
With David Perry - written by Ashley Bradnam

The advent of video has revolutionized the way the
game is analysed. Most NRL coaches spend countless
hours each week perched firmly in front of the box,
searching to exploit opposition team’s weaknesses and
looking to rectify their own.

With the advancement and society acceptance of computers, Rugby League
statistics looks set to go through a similar uprising.
David Perry is a rare combination – half rugby league
fanatic, half computer whiz. As a player David spent
three years with Parramatta during the 1980’s,
managing to reach First Grade before retiring to the
NSW central coast where he began coaching.

In 2002, David will be in charge of the Erina Under 17’s,
dividing his time between the training paddock and
the computer screen, where he works full time as a
computer programmer. The dual interest has lead
David to the creation of an application program aimed
at making the collection and analysis of game statistics
easier.

“I basically just wanted to make things easier for
myself’, says David. ‘the old pen and paper method
of collecting the statistics is antiquated, time
consuming and can be eliminated by someone with a
basic knowledge of Excel macros. Microsoft Excel
spreadsheets provide a simple vessel for storing data
and an extension of this for people more familiar with
computer software is to store this spreadsheet
information in a Microsoft Access database. The
amount and type of data stored in these databases is
almost endless.’

The beauty of introducing a sytem similar to David’s
is that you will begin securing knowledge which
normally wouldn’t show up on the tradition stats sheet.

“Normally all you get as far as stats go is the tackle
count, the hit ups and maybe something like a drop
ball count or who made mistakes. But they can be so
misleading; for instance if someone just flops on top
of a bloke after the tackle has almost been completed,
he often gets credited with a tackle. Or someone might
lazily ruck the ball up and be smashed backwards but
they come off looking good because their hit-up count
is high’.

David’s application is almost endless in the way in
can record different stats that typically would pass by
unnoticed.

Things like:
· Touches of ball per game
· Yards made after contact in hit ups.
· Player involvement; who is the instigator in tackles and who
is only assisting
· Passes leading to tries
· The quality of kicks in play; distance and effectiveness
· The quality of winger/fullback returns from kicks
· Amount of decoy runs; extra efforts off the ball
· Possession flows; amount of time spent in your own half
· Effectiveness inside the opposition’s red zone

Once the game has been transferred from video into
your personal computer there is literally hundreds of
different stats which can be used. With all your
statistics “tagged” against the video file, it is possible
to return to any particular portion of the game allowing
you to do multiple passes of the video, perhaps each
time adding a more complex level of analysis.

It is also possible to nominate a player and build a file
of every time he performed an event in the game,
perhaps a tackle or a carry and record these instances
one after the other onto a video tape for additional
feedback to players.

Easily available video editing programs allow you to split out small
sections of the game and each of these small clips can be labeled and
recorded against a player in a similar way as you may catalog your CD or LP
collection. Alternatively you may wish to catalog events that relate to a
particular opponent or a particular referee.

The data that can be chronicled is limited only by the
amount of time you have to set up the application and
enter the statistics. While not for sale at the moment,
David has not ruled out the possibility of taking his
application to the market place, but in the meantime
insists it’s something every coach can put in place
either by himself, or with the help of someone with a
general knowledge of computers.
