Colico Fun Center, Cremia - Como Lake - Italy
27 May / 4 June - Freestyle - Speed Crossing - Super Session - Sliders

FIAT HANG TIME
FIAT BEST TRICKS
MISULTINE ZONE SPEED CROSSING

The Lake of Como, Italy, has been chosen as site for the Como Lake Kiteboard
World Cup, kick off of the 2006 KPWT season !!!!

At only 20 days from the event, with 70 riders, everything is set to host the
KPWT Team, that will organize the event with the collaboration of its local
partners, Logos Style, and the support of the event main sponsors : Fiat

This event will be the first leg of the KPWT 06, and as such is sure to attact
numerous spectators & medias that will attend a great show offered by a best and
dream casting of competitors, who will perform five disciplines : Freestyle,
Speed Crossing, Best Tricks, Hang Time contest, Sliders.

Indeed, among the international top pro riders expected at Como, the
representatives of 25 nationalities, among whom some "big sizes" of the
worldwide kiteboarding scene :

The World Champion of kiteboarding, Thomas Cocquelet, will have to defend his
title face to the champions of various european countries : Mickael Fernandez
(FR), KPWT 2004 world champion, Max Di Cicco, Italian Champion, Abel Lago &
Ruben Salvador, Soufiane Hamaini Champion of Morocco..

They will all have to count on other serious challengers : The french Antoine

Other countries will be highly represented : South Africa with Rowlins Tyrone,
Cabo Verde with Mittou, Holland with Sender Lenten......
A great international casting that will face the local leaders : the italians,

The women board is also quite promising :
Will the young spanish phenomenon Gisela Pulido, 2005 world champion, confirm
her leadership on this first leg of the 2006 world cup tour ? What we can say is
that she will have to count with some of the best
female competitors of the moment : Noelia Nunez Macias KPWT vice champion 2005,
the Turkish champion Julie Simsar, Marta Lobato Portuguese Champion, Perine
Scelland new Caledonian
champion........

I moded my 12 crossbow a couple weeks ago and i love it very much less
bar pressure as well as a pretty significant turning speed.

I had our first lesson of the season using the Waroo 12m in the week-end
and it was excellent.

The student was twice my weight (255 lbs .vs. 125 lbs) and we shared the
same 12m Waroo no problem.

The water relaunch was so easy and that's really boosted the student's
confident level. We also went through the relaunching technique using
both the flat kite technique and the the classic kite technique (the
student obviously prefer the flat kite technique as it was simpler).

The "submarine pull" was reduced by more than half.

The body drag upwind was easy.

The student originally wanted to buy a used 16m classic kite from the
school (for budget reason) and after the session, wanted to go for new
flat kite as he liked it so much (even though a new Waroo 16m is twice
as expensive as the school used 16m classic LEI).

Overall, I saw many advantages of teaching/learning using flat kite and
not any disadvantage except for the fact that the student may get
addicted to the flat kite and may not want to use classic kite.

Hung.

I did the mod. The Xbow is an incredible kite with the mod! Without
it, there is way too much bar pressure.

The kites are advancing all the time. I wonder just how good they can
get.

I saw a contra this weekend. It had one pump, better construction, and
the same mod stock.

I can emagin that if the tech keeps getting better, there are going to
be spinoff sports that are related, but not exactly the same thing as
kiteboarding.

It's like the evolution of a species to flight. I can't help but have
that go through my head everytime I send the Xbow, and sheet in.

Subject: Re: [ksurf] Wipika Matrix vs Best Waroo

For 10-25 knots and 85 kg I would recommend a quiver of 16 and 12. If you
skip the lightest winds you could even opt for 14 and 9. I'm talking bows
here, not C-kites, but bows is obviously what you want. The advantage of a
14/9 quiver are: better handling and you gain a lot more high end (maybe 15
knots) by sacrificing a bit of low end (say 3 knots) . Also for a beginner
it is better to be a bit underpowered, hence the 9m, which is the kite you
should buy first then.

As for the choice between Wipika Matrix and Best Waroo: I did not find any
relevant information about the Wipika Matrix on the web and hardly anything
negative about the Waroo. I even wonder if there is such thing as a Matrix
2006 kite. So if the choice is between those two: Waroo. I can hardly
imagine that you ever would regret the purchase.

So for your first year you shouldn't take a small and radical board, but you
don't need a ship either. Later you could use it as your light wind board.
With your size I would recommend a bidirectional board with length 132-140
(4'4"- 4'7") and width 39-43 cm. ( 15.5"-17"). I would not recommend a
board less wide as 38.5 cm. A wide board goes well with a bow/SLE
kite, because you will never need to edge hard. A wide board increases your
low-end and eases planing.

I studied the boards you mention, and I was most impressed by the LF Drop
136. The Proof 151 is the biggest board you mention, so it will be the
easiest in the beginning probably, but you will soon outgrow it and I think
it is even too big to be comfortable in light winds once you are advanced.

To make things more complicated: Have a look at the North Dragon Large
(134×43). Never set my foot on a board that planed so early and still could
turn easy. A friend of mine (100+ kg) just learned kiting on this board.

And then the last advice: Buy (or better borrow) a big and cheap (<$100)
beginners board for your very first sessions, then once you can stay on
it, try the boards mentioned above, choose the one you like and get rid of
the big thing again. Pass it on to a novice.

He is doing you a big favor. Don't expect that kind of price anywhere
else. Those kites are still selling at almost MSRP with the new ones
expected sometime in August.

If I were you I would take that deal whether you can get rid of the
other kites or not. Put the bridal mod on, and you will have one hell
of a kite for 1/5th the price anyone else is going to get.

Hi!
Forget the higher price of the sonic. For me I can get the Sonic
complete new evem more cheaper than the waroo without the bar!
So... the price is out of question.

For those who have tried both kites, can you tell me what is the best
kite to pick up?
For the Sonic I was thinking about the combo of 11 and 8.
For the Waroo I was thinking about the combo of 14 and the 9.
I´m 75 kilos!

I´d like to know what you think about this two models, in the aspects
of quality of constructuion; Performance, hangtime, jumps, etc, and
the stability, the bar...

Thanks!

I am planning to write a section on Kiteboating at the Kitesurfing
School web site http://kiteboardingschool.org/kiteboating.htm so we (2
kiters) tried a standard Laser sailboat with a 12m Waroo in light wind
around 7 knots over the week-end.

After 2 failed attempts of kiteboating with the kite attached to one of
us (we got pull off the boat), we tried attaching the kite to the center
block of the Laser and it worked very nicely.

We could do everything (down wind, upwind, jibe, kiteloop and even stop
the boat by swinging the kite backward) except for relaunching the kite
(the wind was too light perhaps).

We will try it in stronger wind to see how the relaunching will work.

Kiteboating is definitly a great things to do when you want to go kiting
with a friend ...

Remember too that there are boats (actually catamarans) designed
specifically for use with a kite that work excellent. Peter Lynn has been
refining his Kite Cat design for over 15 years and the current version can
be put on a roof rack to be taken to your local spot. With steering on all
4 corners controlled by your feet similar to in a kite buggy, this style
will turn very quickly and is capable of very high speeds.

Unfortunately, if you want one now, you better stand in line. It can take
many months to get yours if you order it now. Attach a side saddle seat and
electric trolling motor for backup propulsion and you can explore a lot of
water.

I knew about the Kitecat. Peter sent me a photo of it a couple years
back and I believe I have posted it on the Kitesurfing FAQ.

I would consider the kitecat as a waterbuggy and the sport waterbuggying.

For kiteboating, I aim at traditional boats of at least 2 persons
(sailboat or others) with kites attached to the boat and as the only
source of power (except for padles or engine in case of nowind or
assisting in relaunching).

Eventually, I want to offer kiteboating lesson to average sailboat sailors.

I've sucessfully done the laser kiting several times, amazing how
close to the wind you can go almost straight up wind, and in so light
wind. here is the video from one of my trips:

12 Crossbow, 27 meter lines, 2 and 3 persons on the laser.

Yes this is in SF Bay, we have tried it sucessfully with the kite
hooked to me and to the boat it is definatly easier to do while the
kite is attached to the boat.

We found it is easier attaching the kite to the boat too.

Furthermore, attach the chickenloop to the boat is the way to go for
sure if we want to scale kiteboating up to larger boat.

I can see the one-pump feature with a built-in electric pump on the boat
useful for preparing the kite on the boat, also the turbo launcher.

I also thought of attaching a kite to a hobie cat that I had. It got
destroyed in a hurricane but I was going to connect it with a continuous loop
traveler so that it could be moved from side to side and kept there.

For boat launching to kite board or to kite boat. layout the lines and wind
up one side until the kite is sideways. Then wind all of the lines together
from that point. Fill up the kite, and let it drift down wind. If you let
the kite and lines out with the lines going through a rope or bar with 4 or 5
caribiners you can be sure that there are no twists between the kite and the
caribiners. When all the lines are let out you can untwist the bar if there
are any twists. Once you are ready, take the lines out of the caribiners and
unwind the last segment of line... the kite should be ready to water launch.

Here are some: http://www.dcss.org/speedsl/gallery.html Also:
http://www.cobrakite.com/jaclad.html

These were taken between 1978 and 1989, all include rigidly attaching
kites to boats, not to the sailors' bodies. This isn't exactly new
stuff, Hung.

FWIW, there's an issue about using kitesurf LEI's with boats. When you
load up the kite (you can put several times more load on the lines
with a boat than with a board), the LEI deforms and pull drops off--a
lot. This is fine for small boats like lasers and hobies, but not for
larger boats. Yes, Don Montegue is having this happen to him, as are
the several European groups trying to tie the wrong kite to the wrong
boat.

In the meantime, the Lynn cat is actually working very well--he solves
the tie-in issue by making the seat sides very high. This allows
realistic kite loads but retains the safety factor--when overpowered
the pilot gets lofted, not the whole boat (hooked-on hobies, lasers
and the like *will* take off and fly if you fall off or get pulled
off--this can be easily as dangerous as other kite surfing accidents.
Imagine being hit by the flying boat as it comes down.)

Ignoring the Lynn boat (as by calling it "not kiteboating", or "water
buggying") is a mistake, IMO. These boats sail circles around
kite-powered hobies or lasers, and can be bought ready-to-go. YMMV. I
am not aware of any delays in shipping the cat--as far as I know,
Peter is still selling them at "introductory" prices ( = just about
their cost). Contact Pelton Windsports in the US:
http://www.peltonwindsports.com/

I don't sell these cats, nor have any commercial tie to them. I can
tell you that they are very simple to launch and to fly. You can drive
them right onto the beach (rudders are bullet proof) and can pick the
whole thing up easily and walk to or from water while your kite is
attached to your harness. These are easily the handiest kite powered
boats I've ever worked with.

Cheers,

Dave

Kiteboating is as old as our civilization so there is nothing new here!

What's new is how to make it more practical and appealing to an average
boat sailor.

With modern flat LEI, full-depower, easy relaunching, electric pump,
one-pump, Turbo Launcher (or similar idea), kiteboating may become more
practical and not just for the more radical crowd. We just need to put
all these elements together and see how they all work.

Some old kiteboating issues may not be applicable to modern flat LEIs...

P.S., The Peter Lynn KiteCat works great and Eric has been using it
around here for a couple years; however, if a kiter want to go solo,
he/she likely wants to grab a board and if they want to go as a team,
they definite want a boat where there is a team effort of kitesailing.

P.P.S., Have Kiteship.com come up with new products other than the
Outleader? I have an idea for you, send me a private email if you want
to discuss about it.

If anyone is located in the Hood River, OR area and is interested in the
KiteCat, there is a used one located there for sale. Current owner
purchased it from us in hopes of getting back to kite sports with a failing
lower back but unfortunately he says his back still hurts and he is looking
for a new owner. If you are interested please contact me directly and I
will put you in touch with the owner.
