Aaron,
I just started kiteboarding this past summer in the Gorge as well as one week in
Maui. I have North Rhinos (8 & 12 M2) and have trouble re-launching them, but
anticipate experience will help. I like them fine, but have not really spent
much time on other brands. I did notice the popularity of Cabrinha kites in
Maui and the Recon system is intriguing. Prices are good so if I had to do it
over again I would seriously consider that brand (you don't see many in the
Gorge). I bought my kites (03's) used thru Iwindsurf.com and have been happy
with them (I bought locally so I could see them first).
I bought a used Slingshot Drake board (143cm?) and I love it, but anticipate
downsizing in a season or two.
I ride in 15-25 MPH winds and the Gorge is typically gusty.
I use a helmet, life vest (designed for kayaking with a very high cut), and
carry a knife. I wish the pros out there would set better examples by using
safety gear.
Good luck and ride safely.
Michael

	 Hi everybody!!
After getting started in kitesurfing only few days in the Italian seas, on last
November I went to Cape Verde where I spent 2 weeks training hard and finally I
learned to go upwind and trying my first jumps.
For this kite trip I brought my own equipment: a kiteboard RRD bidi 170cm (not
so good for entry-level) and a kite RRD type 4.1 16m.
Now I'd like to buy new equipment and I need some suggestions about board and
kite shapes and manufacturers:
	 1) KITES: In Cape Verde I've been rescued 2 times: I did not succedeed in
relaunching the kite because of the strong wind that was dragging me up to Boa
Vista Island. So, I need a good relaunchable kite... I've read something about
the RECON system employed by Cabrinha. It seems to be a good safety system
especially in relaunching the kite (it is almost "invisible"). Another system I
read about is the one adopted by wipika which includes a 5th line but.... more
lines, more troubles....
More over, the SS fuels are attractive (especially the 2004 production) in
terms of performance and material used in construction... Is Naish a really good
one??...
So... too many brands are confusing me... What about size and Aspect Ratio? Are
those safety systems credibles?
	 I think I'd have to buy 2 kites. It's better a 12m and a 18m or a 10m and a
16m? What about the manufacturers?? Do you think Cabrinha is a good choise??
which is the best model that combines safety and performance?
	 2) BOARDS: my intent is to buy a board (not so "radical") which allows me to
surf in medium/strong wind. For this reason I think that 140-145 cm is a good
lenght What do you think about the slingshot SX series? Are Drops boards good ?
Someone told me that the Cabrinha ones are good... Is the Naish "Stubbie"
suitable for intermediates??

	 Please... help me!!!
I wish you all the best.

	 Aaron

For a comprehensive FAQ on kitesurfing read:
http://www.kitesurfingschool.org/faqs.htm

Take a good read at this and search the groups past discussions for more
information (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kitesurf/messages). This way you will
quickly learn the basic information about kitesurfing that you desire.

=====

Here are some basic recommendations for this list in terms of netiquette. These
recommendations are here to make the list easier to use and read and to make
mail sent more efficient. Also we try and keep the discussions interesting and
want to avoid trash mail.

1 No Spam - send mail to the list ONLY about kitesurfing or things related to
Kites and Boards and Spots. Thats why people signed onto this. Definitely dont
send us messages about viruses or other junk

2 When Replying
- do not copy the whole message you are replying reduce it with <snips> or just
quote the relevant part (this is useful to reduce download times)
- Reply only to the sender (not the whole list) if its something specific for
that person (avoid sending a message of the type "I agree" to the whole list)
NB. When you click reply, the message automatically goes to the whole list.

3 Avoid making unconstructive comments about equipment - The equipment producers
are on the list and they do not appreciate it - We try to keep it fair - the
ground rule is that you can make as many positive comments as you like but we
dont want to hear "that kite sucks". That is not considered constructive.

4 Be helpful and constructive in your responses. Avoid sending a message to the
whole list replying "I dont know"

5 If you are a person involved in the Commerce of kitesurfing equipment , it is
recommended that you add COM to the subject line of messages when commenting on
equipment. Better yet, tell people what you do (Ex. Dealer of so and so kites)

6 Files cannot be sent directly to the list - It is better to post them on the
web (the group under files) or on a web page.

7 To unsubscribe send a message to kitesurf-unsubscribe@egroups.com.

8. Personal attacks should not be on the list. If you cant be nice and you have
to insult someone then do it OFF the list.

Welcome and good luck.

Hi all,
Few of us our heading out from Canada to the Dominican in January.
We're thinkin' of hitting either Playa Dorada beach at one of the
resorts there, or something by Sosua (between Puerto Plata and
Cabarete). Anyone know how good the winds, beaches are there for
January for that area? Are the beaches wide enough for good safe
launches or would we have to go to Cabarete? Any info on these
places would be great. The hotel by Sosua is called Casa Marina
Beach and Reef Resort, any info on that would be great too, if
someone else has gone there. This will be all of our first trip to
the Dominican. Thanks in advance for any info.

I have been flying the boxers for a few months and am very happy with
the performamce.
It is important to know what I like to see if this pertains to you.
I like moderate aspect kites, I like a kite that stays back in the
window a bit so i can load up against it quickly. I like a
predictable kite as I like to spin and have my eyes off the kite a
bit.

The Boxer is a high performance kite and it is lower aspect.
It jumps surpsingly well.

Great kite for aerial transitions, spins and to whip sytle jumps.

Hein, I owe you one, so If you want me to send you a kite to try let
me know.

I have been trying to get hold of a 17m 2004 CO2 in the UK for some
time. The importers don't have any, and it seems like despite having
received their promised recent shipment at the beginning of December
my local retailer has not been sent any. I am going to Cabarete on
22/12 and am now beginning to panic. Does anyone know any Cabrinha
retailers on Cabarete with these kites in stock? How do prices
compare with UK? Alternatively is there anyone in the UK, Europe or
anywhere else who can mail order it to me cost-effectively?

Aaron,

I spent a week in France this last summer at a kitesurfing class,
learning to waterlaunch with 2 line kites in deep choppy waters. The
kites were always falling out of the sky. Then I rented a Flysurfer
foil for a day, it was hard to relaunch too, and if it gets water
logged your stuck with a sea anchor. Then I tried a friends 4 line
kite with trim loop and realised a LEI doesn´t need to fall out of
the sky. I also realised you need your own kit that is set up for
you, and footstraps that are easy to get into.

So I broke down and bought a Naish Aero 2, 12 and 18m2 with UDS bar.
Made my own board 150x42cm and fitted it with 3, 2.5 inch on each
end for good grip.

Then I took a charter trip to El Gouna in Egypt last week. Shallow
water and steady winds.

Lessons learned:
1. UDS works well. Lots of de-power and rode whole week in "free
bar" mode, never hooked into trim loop, just used "leash" for de-
power. De-power helps when holding kite in air and starting. Safety
release works well. No leash to get all tangled like it did in
France all the time, even around neck.
2. Learn in shallow water. Good flyers just don´t drop the kite,
its that simple. Eventually we will learn to not to drop the
kite ,just stay in the shallows.
3. Water launch is not too difficult if you practice it, the right
technique is needed and a good wind. Try it in the shallows first.
4. Use a board that will plane easily so it will forgive poor
starting technique. The board will submarine just after you get
pulled up and lose a little kite power, before you get the kite back
into the power zone. My 150 x 42 was a good fun ride and I kept
upwind after one days flying.
5. VERY important. Use a board with good sized fins. This gives a
good bite so if you lose an edge you don´t fly sliding over the
water and crash. There is a loss of loosness but it´s better than
sliding on your butt all the time. Better to be able to get up and
learn to control the kite without too much concern over edging. I
tried several boards in France and Egypt and had the same problems
with sliding all over. These boards had small fins.
6. My 18m2 was way big for me.(72kgs) I used the 12m2 most of the
time. When I put up the 18 the wind would crank up a few knots and
I´d be really overpowered on my larger board and not good enough
to
have control. Better to learn to fly underpowered with
good "sineing" and save your bucks for when you´re better next
year.
7. All the kites from the majors are nice products. Everyone was out
on Cabrinhas, Gaastras, Naish, Takoons and they all were having fun.
Locals use Slingshots here in Sweden and have fun too. Just get a
kite.
8. Use a life vest and a helmet

Thanks a lot Jer.

For clarification though, when you say "fairly accourate between 10
and 25mph". I take it you mean between those wind speeds, the meter
is fairly accurate, but outside say at 6mph it is not as accurate.
Could you please give some sort of indication of the variances for
each (inside 10-25 and outside 10-25)?

Much tahnks!!

Ringo.

Ringo,
It's been accurate for my purpose, which is usually checking to see
how strong the gusts are in the 10 to 25 mph wind range at sailing
sites where the wind is not very steady and the stronger the wind the
harder the gusts. I've never really relied on or tried to verify its
accuracy outside the 10 to 25 mph (gusts to +30) range, although it's
supposed to measure up to 60 mph. This is a well designed but
relatively inexpensive mechanical device, not a scientific instrument.

Hi guys,

I'm selling my highly loved Ozone Frenzy 9.5 complete, yellow.

It's been used just for 5-10 sessions and it is in perfect, like new
condition.

It's one of the best snowkites out there with great stability and
performance.
I had so much fun with this kite, that I just ordered the 2004 Frenzys (I'm
one of those guys who love to change their gear often.)

Please send me an email to: robin@... when you are interested and
make me an offer.

Take care and fly safe,
Robin

A summary of the circumstances of this tragic accident have been posted
along with ideas on how to try to avoid repetition in the future. I regret
bringing up all these details that might distress those close to this
kiteboarder, still it is done in the hope of sparing others similar
accidents. I wish his family, friends and kiteboarders throughout the
Netherlands solace in this sad time of loss.

Aside from increased hazard awareness and avoidance knowledge, we could
reallly benefit from an effective Automatic Kite Depowering device to help
us try to avoid tragic accidents like this. Ideas are in circulation with
some appearing at:

More ideas and testing input are needed.

I've been to kite beach and stayed at Kitexite. We were there after
the first hurricane a few months ago and got really lucky during
this unstable period - perfect wind 7 days out of 9. According to
people I met there January shoulr provide stable conditions. When we
were there, the beach wasn't much to write home about at that point
since the hurricane took a big bite out of it. However, judging from
the web cams you can find online now, the beach is back to normal
(nice and wide, easy launching) and there is also real-time wind
info and alerts available now.

What I liked most was the fact that there was a protected area
inside the reef with a decent catch area downwind for us beginners,
and that you had everything you needed in one place (school,
equipment rental, hotel, gear storage, food, bar, etc).

Check out:

Have fun!

Kaindl is the bset I have used or seen in the last 12 years, we sell them
for $139 in Oz, $125 export.
Unidirectional, so more accurate than the type you have to point in the
direction of the wind, large display waterproof, shows all wind scales inc
beaufort, lithium battery, great German quality.

Got one of those (Kaindl Windtronic 2) a few months ago. Not that
cheap, but a great product. I paid $65 (US) for it in Cabarete. It
gives you current, max, and average, wind speed in Kilometers/Hour,
Knots, Meter/Second, or Miles/Hour. It also has a Beaufort bar graph
(only current). It's accurate and very easy to use.

I purchased a Kaindl Windtronics 2 wind meter and really like it. It's very
easy to use, has a large readout and is not direction sensitive. I purchased
it from www.kiteplace.com. Here is a link to more specs.

The more I kite, the more I find that winter sessions are always better
than summer sessions.

It's time that all tropical kiters should take vacation in colder
climate to know the differences.

P.S., The meca of kiting is where one can kite on both soft and hard
water...
