Hi All

Does anybody know an insurance company that will insure kiters
against liability etc in Australia?

Its been suggested I try www.aksa.com.au who claim that:

"The initial reason behind forming the association was to provide
members with a nationally recognised insurance policy that covers the
liabilty of the member whilst kite surfing."

But then neglect to actually show policy details on their site! Is
there anyone else other than AKSA?

The aksa is it as far as I am aware, unless you wanted to aproach
insurance companys yourself - but that'll cost you a bit more than
the $50 to join aksa.

Have you contacted aksa and asked them for details about the policy?
there must be email addresses on the website...

hey,

i am ~85kg and use the WT 137 with all my Gaastra GXR (8-20m²).
it could work for me as one and only board, but for light winds with
flat water i have got an Underground FD 138x40.
so i think the wt142 or the 137 is perfect for you!
- take the 137 :-)

You'll want a good pair of mits for sure. Something that won't tear if you have
to pull your kite in with one of the lines. I ruined a new pair of gloves doing
just
that last month.

Naish's marketing and advertising folks should be capable of grabbing
a big enough enough market share out of the 63 millon people they

Hi everyone,

I'm starting data collection for a research project about the
Internet and
sports information.

If you have ever used the Internet to look up any information
pertaining to
sports, I would appreciate if you would fill out my survey. It
should take
between 11- 15 minutes to complete and you could win a prize!!

http://apps.ws.utk.edu/sportsweb/

As part of the convenience sampling procedures we've including
a "snowball"
option - we're asking you to please send the survey on to your
friends and
family who also go online for sports information. There's a form
at the
end of the survey on which you'll enter your friends' email
addresses and
they'll be whisked the URL.

Thanks so much for your help.

Happy holidays,

TJ

With disappointment, I am writing to inform you of the official
RESCHEDULING of Red Bull Kite Freeze. Previously scheduled for January
17-19, due to lack of snow we will be unable to hold the event on those
dates and have rescheduled for Feb. 14-16, 2003.

The ice conditions are questionable right now, there is no snow and no
major storms forecasted in the near future. Suffice to say these
conditions do not present the riding conditions we desire or, in fact,
need to safely and enjoyably hold Red Bull Kite Freeze. While
disappointed that we find ourselves needing to reschedule the event once
again, we remain as committed as ever to the kiting community and look
forward to a successful winter kiting event on Feb. 14-16.

Warmest Regards,

Red Bull Kite Freeze Management

You are heading down the best time of year. April is their
windiest month. If you are there for at least a week it should be a
good trip. Wind wise you should see a range from 10 to 30 knts so
bring all your stuff to cover all the bases. The water in the sound
is very mellow. Even in winds up to 25-30 knts it doesn't get bigger
than a foot or 2. The water temp in the sound is totally dependent on
the weather. If it is a warm week ie wind out of the south it's
conceivable that you could be in a shorty maybe even just a swim
suit. If it's cold ie wind out of the north you will definitely be
most comfortable in a steamer. The Ocean will probably require a full
suit no matter what ( around 50-60 degrees) and the surf can be
mellow to macking.
As far as accomodations go renting a house is by far the best deal
if you have enough people to share the cost. You can rent a place in
any town on the cape but I suggest you get one in Avon. It's central
and all the shops are there where you can get plenty of advice on
where to kite. Here's a good site for rentals.

Have a great trip,
Ace

Hi Guys,
         Heres another 2 cents.
when was the last time you looked in any magazine and saw your
average joe somebody in his budgie smugglers smiling at the camera.
When did you last see an average looking individual on the cover of
cosmopolitan magazine.

Unfortunately aesthetics as it is commonly known as is the heart and
soul of the advertising world. Magazines only became seperate from
newspapers in the early days because of advertising restrictions.

It really pisses me off to hear males batting for women on the
sexism issue. I am not saying it should be done but I think there is
a fair bit of eye candy for women at any good kiteboarding location.
So why not in a kiteboarding magazine. Oh yeah did I mention sex
sells?

Ok So i'll try and sum up what you want:
1: A magazine that agrees with your opinions on the equipment
reviews of all thier products.
2: A magazine with no witty slogans
3: An uninthusiastic editor
4: A magazine filled with pictures of middle aged men and women
landing thier first backloops.

And what the fuck is wrong with wearing board shorts over your
wetsuit. Sounds to me like you are subscribing to the same morals as
you quite obviously detest. In my opinion you can kiteboard in
whatever you want as long as you are safe.

Now you have got me all pissed off and have clouded the issue with
bullshit. The real issue is not sexism or pants over your wetsuit or
helmet man its safety. Ignoring safety will get you killed sexism at
worst will get you a good slap in the face. I am disgusted to see
that at the beginning of ever kiteboarding magazine on the first
page these words do ot appear.

ATTENTION ALL KITEBOARDERS AND PROSPECTIVES.
KITEBOARDING IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD ONLY BE UNDERTAKEN IN
LOCATIONS WHERE IT IS LEGAL TO KITEBOARD, BY INDIVIDUALS WITH THE
CORRECT KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY. ALL KITEBOARDERS FEATURED IN THIS
MAGAZINE ARE PROFESSIONALS AND HAVE ONLY GOT THIS WAY THROUGH
LEARNING IN THE PROPER MANNER. IF YOU ARE KITEBOARDING AMONGST OTHER
KITEBOARDERS YOU MUST WEAR A KITE LEASH. FAILURE TO WEAR A LEASH CAN
LEAD TO DEATH. FAILURE TO ANALYSE A KITEBOARDING LOCATION CORRECTLY
CAN LEAD TO DEATH. FAILURE TO CONSTANTLY ANALYSE CHANGING WEATHER
PATTERNS CAN LEAD TO DEATH. FAILURE TO WEAR ADEQUATE FLOTATION AND
IMPACT PROTECTION DEVICE CAN LEAD TO DEATH. IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE
CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL FOR ADVICE ON LESSONS AND TRAINING BEFORE
ATTEMPTING THIS SPORT. YOU MAY ALSO WANT TO INVESTIGATE WHAT
INSURANCE IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR AREA TO GUARD AGAINST THIRD PARTY
PERSONAL AND PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY. THE ONLY THING WORSE THAN
INJURING OR KILLING YOURSELF IS INJURING OR KILLING SOMEONE ELSE. IF
YOU SEE ANOTHER KITEBOARDER DOING SOMETHING YOU DEEM DANGEROUS GO
AND OFFER ASSISTANCE. PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE.

Now all that jibbering and I hope I got the message through and all
you people see the real picture. We can not stop everyone from
buying a kite, not getting a lesson and going out and doing the
kiteboarding world and themselves an injustice by having an
accident. Next time you have something pertinent to add to the forum
don't cloud it with sexist, opinionated propaganda. Who knows I
might just agree with you.

DRO.

Actually that's a real poor statement . Why?
Robby was probably making a rhetorical point with his comment -
for the Sport of Kiteboarding is WAY LESS THAN 1% OF the World Population.
FYI
what is 1% of 6 billion, (the current approximate
population of the world) ? lets say 60 million.
thats a lot of kiters I hope we never see!- roughly double the population of
California.
Do you honestly believe their are 60 million kiters in the world?
:-0
OR
Let's see if Robby was talking ONLY about the USA-
Or just 1% of the USA - 240 million? say- 2.4 million - about the Population
of the San Fernando Valley in LA.
Again, that's alot of kiters I hope we never see.

Here's a good ass-scratching question=

What are the REAL estimate numbers of kiteboarders in the world?

Its Fool the Guesser time....

ok, ok, ok, as long as we're getting technical about this.... i just
checked my naish t-shirt again, and it actually says "99.9% of the
world's population" so we're talking about 6 million, not 60 million.

now 6 million is still probably more than the real number...especially
when you consider that they came out with that ad/line a couple years
ago before kiteboarding started to explode. and even though it may come
off as elitist or full of attitude, the statement is pretty much true.
all things considered (cost, safety, access, interest, etc.) it is
absolutely, positively the wrong sport for 99.9% of the world's
population.

You can easily go backwards on the 4.8 (I assume you are talking
about the Naish Mutant 4.8 ?).
Not as pleasant and good trim as a TT of course, but still REALLY
easy.

Hi Lars,

I ride a Mutant 4'11" as my main board. Never been on a 4'8". I do a lot of
wave riding, which is where this board excels. IMO, it is the best wave-board I
have ever been on. It is by far my favorite board to ride.

I never jibe it. It rides backwards very nicely, although less efficiently than
riding forward. I also do a lot of toe-side riding when riding left and it
works great. The one thing I would suggest, though, is to consider the 4'11".
the 4'8" is geared towards high winds. It is too small for real world
conditions (too narrow). Unless you are a tiny rider, a 4'11" is your best bet.

By the way, in your post you say "I want do buy a mutant 4.8 because of its fins
and edging abilities for more speed and higher jumps.....". If this is your
purpose, and not wave-riding, I'd recommend the 2003 4'9" TT instead. It is
much better for free-style riding if you don't jibe and are not into waves. The
Mutants don't jump as well going backwards because it's harder to go fast that
way.

Thanks for these answers.
I am happy tu hear that backwards riding is posssible, even when it
is not its purpose.
An I weigh 72 Kg, I think, I can go small and take the 4.8 Naish.

You are right. I am not interested in waves. I have allready an 6.6
Skypirat, an 150 naish wake which is too big, then I constructed me
an other wake of 140cm which I like, but it is not fast, and when I
go fast , I lose rapidly the edge and slide.
Concerning the 4.9, I think it is too big for a TT : 12 l volume.

I have folloved the discussions about MUTANTS concerning the
stability and edging in overpovered conditions due to their FINS.
So, I was also interested into the SURF MORF by John Doyle.
I hope that the egging before the jump will be more effective on a
mutant
I even transformed the Wake into a semi-directional, and the edging
was better.

Too cold to kite now......
Lars

Underground say that a 147cm is a good allround size, and they are
right! I have a 147 and weigh 72-75, you need to be well powered all
the time to ride something smaller than this, and if you are just
over 6ft tall anything shorter than this feels too short. If you
have a big 3+ quiver of kites closely spaced and don't have gusty
conditions you can go for a 142 or 137, but for light wind even the
147 is not great, you need a flat rockered FD or Smorgasboard! So if
you have to have one board, the 147..

They recommend the 147 for average riders as an only board-and they say
average is 80kg and that anyone lighter could go the 142 as their only
board.
