If the wind holds as it is right now of 14 gusting to 16 knots, I
will be going to Wolf around 1:30PM.
Hope it holds...forecast is for sw 10-15 all afternnon throughout the
evening and tommorow too. Normally the sw winds, most of the time
comes out more then the actual forecast.

We are looking at going in november, but can't wait. I got 21 nemesis for me, and 21 for my brother-in-law, and a 14 for my wife. The 21 is not my favorite kite.

Myers will be giving you full time attention for 2 full days. You
will progress from total novice to riding some tacks out and back.
If you already ride but really want to get to the next level, this
is a great way to go. The cost of the camp is $400 for the whole
weekend. Space is limited so email Steve today to sign up or get
more information. steve@... 1-800-622-4655 Ext 228
Matt and Keegan put everything they have into teaching new students
the 'ropes'. I wish these camps were around when I started.

You must stay on your board at all times or risk an encounter with it!

Thanks for the "Gorge Report" hope you can keep them coming from time to time. Am wondering about the downwinders on the coast. Were they using Hammersurf boards? And were they riding directional/mutants or twin tips?

Gerard,
You make a good point about the Ban forcing us to find new alternatives to
"Mother M". The break wall off Casino beach seems to give smoother waves on NNE
winds and Casino appears to get more wind on ESE days. The Ban has also opened
my eyes to the benefits of morning kiting. It makes me think of the joke when
the man says he likes being a bisexual, "because it doubles his chances on a
Saturday night". Kiting in the mornings before work on Southern Lake Michigan
also increases our chances for getting good wind; effectively doubling your
kiting chances assuming you live close to the beach and can get up at 4:30 to
check the wind. In this regard, on South winds in the Summer we know the
thermal pull works against the Southern flow as the land heats up. In the
morning I'm finding it a great time to ride the overnight SSE winds that will
die in the afternoon when the sun gets high in the sky. Its also incredibly
beautiful in the morning with the sun coming up over the lake when you have the
entire beach to yourself.
Regards,
Tim
Hey Mike,Tim, et al,
Great work you guys are doing, I really hope those "IF's" become
reality.
Though due to the ban we have found new and arguably better
beaches around town, I really still like riding in Montrose. It's
just not the convinience it comes with but just the energy around "M"
is different, I don't know.

Right now, wind is looking good for Wolf, If it holds and goes up
just slightly which is what is forecasted, I will be at Wolf around 2-
3 PM.

As Tim stated, we met today with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of
the Chicago Park District. He was very sympathetic to our cause and
wants Chicago's Parks to be enjoyed by more people.
The interim plan we floated included 4 point with some details.
Kiteboarders will be required to be certified by PASA or IKO to an
intermediate standard (PASA Level II). Second, kiteboarders will be
required to wear an attached kite safety leash and follow common
kiteboarding safety rules. Third, the beach will be made available
for shared use watersports when the bathing areas are closed.
Fourth, we asked that the Capt of the Guards be able to allow
kiteboarding at non-peak times, low crowd days, etc at his or her
discretion.
If you have the opportunity to become PASA/IKO Level 2 certified, by
all means do it! IF IF IF IF the PArk District allows us back, you
will need a certification card. I am finally finishing my instructor
paperwork and should be able to issue cards in the near future.
There are lots of IF's and nothing is for certain. Mr. Cronis was
very receptive and we left with good feelings. However, there are
legal hurdles to clear, political hurdles, and the City moves at a
slow pace.
Thanks to everyone who's been working on this issue! Thank you to
everyone for staying off Montrose for now. Finally, thanks for your
patience.
Kite Safe!

Peter Lynn Kiteboarding has a completely new line of four line foil kites for 2004; the Bomba a low aspect beginner/surf kite, the Guerilla II a medium aspect advanced kite and the Phantom a high aspect water and land kite. These new kites have closed the gap between foils and tubes without sacrificing their know qualities of easy setup, durability, light weight and stability in gusty winds. Because several locals have asked me about my new 22m Guerilla II which I like a lot, I thought it would prove helpful to forward a review shown below from Traig Trumbo at Monkey Air who I buy my kites from which follows.
I have shown Traig's e-mail address and if you have interest in PLK kites, please contact him directly. I'm not on commission, but do think the new PLK kites worthwhile investigating. In the review Traig refers to the Bomba as the "B", Guerilla as the "G" and Phantom as the "P". Of these kites for Lake Michigan think the G the best all around for stability and upwind ability to beak through our prevailing on shore winds.
Today Mike Urban and I had a very positive meeting with the Jim Chronis, the CPD Director of Operations who as a former hot air balloonist understands certification issues and the risks of air sports. Mike presented a plan that requires Level II certification, but no insurance with check in and out with the guards at times of low beach activity. At the conclusion of our meeting Jim said he would work with us to get us back on the beach at Montrose. He said he plans to meet with the head of the Legal Dept. to try to find a solution and would get back to us in a week or two. Lets all say a prayer or two he finds a solution.

Tim

Hi Tom. Just back from a great trip to Mex demoing and using all the PL kites with Steffan Cook. I have so many super satisfied local 17 B riders, including myself that this would really be wierd if not for a very common thread. When a customer comes from using a park and ride kite like a G, they are used to being pulled upwind by a kite parked at the edge, rather than working the kite and edging against it as in a lower aspect arc model or tube. The B17 has FAR more power than the G15 in my mind and I used the G15 as my primary kite the year before last the the G2 15 proto most last year. The B17 turns better and has way more power with great range and pop. It does sit far back in the window relative to a G or P and so I can understand your lack of feel for the kite without some getting used to it time. You have to keep the kite moving unlike the other models. This is only for the lightest stuff though as they park and ride in all sizes very, very well. I spent some time on the B20 in rediculously light to no wind conditions (it water launched five times in six mile per hour gusts...Really amazing_) and pulled very well with surprising turn for this style of kite and given wind. It does not turn like a big tube but is so darn user friendly and does yank you up wind (as long as you edge against kite and not just use a kite to pull you straight up wind as many of us spoiled on high a.r. G, F and P arcs are used to)..Lots of us would rather have a quicker turning kite with a bit more back bridling (B). I have a bunch of people here who bought B protos, sold them to get the g's and have now sold those to get B's again as they have figured out how to ride the B's. As Bob D. has stated, it is really such a big thing with riding style. My best local rider has done all models and now loves his P but misses the grunt of the G2 and ease and tip pivot of B. Think you will be stoked on your P arcs but you will not get that super easy relaunch of the B or the bottom end grunt without some real working of the kite. With a larger and fast board these kites come alive though. The P is the best park and surf behind kite (not chase your kite like a wakeboard behind a boat) for side off conditions that I have had the priveledge to try. We used the 9,12,15 and 18 in this way down at a great wave spot in Mex this week ato great advantage. So in conclusion, the 17 B is one of my favorite kites but it is a different style than what you are used to and something you would probably learn to really enjoy in a little while. Would compare it to a 15 tube and the 20 to a 17 tube. The only complaint I had on a B 17 was from a fellow who is not skilled at staying up wind yet and thought it was the kite. A fellow kiter of equal level, flying upwind of the lei guys on the same kite sort of changed his mind a little bit on that though. Got to learn to use the new tool. Hope you have a blast with the P arc. Keep it moving like you are mad at it as Bob would say and you will be a happy camper. Just park in the heavier stuff. All the best and hope that helped. Be sure to tell all your ARC buddies about our group so we will continue to grow! Thank you for all the great ARC information!

Well, I took my first trip to the Oregon coast last week. There were
tons of people doing 7 mile downwinders and hitchhiking back. A great
environment.
I finally downsized to some gorge sized gear. My Chicago stuff was too
big. A lot of people ride slingshot gear here. maybe because they are
local. Anyway, I got myself a slingshot fuel 7 and 9 as well as a
slingshot 132 SX board. I rode this stuff on the coast and it was
perfect. I was afraid of how small the 132 sounded, but it felt great
and jetted upwind like a champ. Also, the one pump fuel kites are very
slick and work well, as well as having good performance.
As far as the local launch aream it's pretty much kites only at the
sandbar and windsurfers only at the grassy event site. Everyone does
seem to get along just fine. The sandbar does get really crowded. We
counted 68 kites inthe air one day! Not ideal, but people make it work.
If you come in to land or need to launch, people readily volunteer, no
questions asked. It's nice. There's definitely a temwork feel out
here. You don't see many board leashes and I've seen people recovering
eachothers boards. it's great. I finally lost the leash myself.
Upwind body dragging is something we emphasize at the school and it's
not a mystery, it works. I lost my board on the ocean and spent about
10 minutes dragging and waiting for it. It was great.
Hope you guys are having fun in Chicago.

Going to Whilhala via LSD or 41 south is much shorter and quicker
then taking the 90/94 to the skyway, less a 2$ toll too.
From the Wilhala gate to North ave. beach is exactly 18 miles, I
measuerd on my odometer as I drove home yesterday. I have taken this
route already 3 times at different times of the day and really no
traffic except by the Grant park area...but not too bad.
Kobi, takes this route a lot too and has since stopped using the
skyway.
It is even beter to travel east from the kennedy to go to LSD then
head south vs. driving using the skyway from downtown.

Gus, I have to do things this afternoon, I will surely be there for

Today so far looking good, usually pick up around 4pm, problem for all of you
in the N side is trafic, check gary wind readings, it's the closest to what's
going on at Whihala, although not as gusty since gary is more inland tends to
read 10-20 when at the beach is 12-15.

After yesterday I thought that the weekend couldn't have gotten any
better with a great friday and Saturday session but today was
unexpectadly awsome, the crib showed only around 9 knots around 2-4
PM but Wilhlaha was cranking the whole afternoon, Paul,Gus,Kobi and I
were there and riding overpowered on the 16's and 17m kites. Wow. The
wind must bend different there because when I left Whilhala at 6:30
with Paul still in the water it was white capping all the way to the
shore but as I drove home using 41 South (LSD) the Chicago lakes
looked quiet.
Anyways, looks like we may have Mon and Tuesday with wind too. If
this continues, screw Hatteras,S.Padre,Gorge, Carribiean...the place
to be is Hammond In.....yeeehaaww.

If its blowing NE at least 15 at the crib in the morning am planning to do downwinders from under the jetty. Ryan, call or e-mail me if you are coming. I'll bring your board which I've finished.

It was indeed a nice first day back on the water. Wilhala is a sweet
place to ride and we have a great relationship with the Guards.
I got a call from the other side and they were riding all day at
Grand Haven as well.
I'm glad you enjoyed the Pineapple!
Mike
Mike,
We'll be at Whihala again today, with Gerard and others, I don't
know if we'll get enough wind to ride, but many times when the
foreast was NE 10-15 for Chicago we got good 15kts from the ESE
there. Call before you drive.
Gus.

p.d: Any pineapple left?

Ooopss, Paul, and you and I were there alone for a while too :)
Thank's for hanging on to my bag...hey Paul, Sweet looking new board,
FYI: For the heavy weight guys: Check out Paul's new Hana Crew board,
130x45....it got him going on a 12m kite while I was on a 12m kite
too and not overpowered. I think this is the fisrt time Paul and I
were actually out on the same size kite. Sweet board.
