Brandon,
We're thinking of meeting around 1:00/1:30 today at North Ave to assess
conditions. Although I'm a little shaky about doing this, I think I'd
like to try it. Clearly we will all be putting our gear and ourselves at
risk.
I'm thinking if it looks super gusty or SW we don't do it at North ave. I
think the ideal time for this exercise will come with steady S 10 to 20. If
its gusting to 30 and above we may have to give it a pass, or if its
shifting SW and offshore. If its S and gusting to 30 we might want to try
Thorndale beach. Although there's some wind shadows on the beach Terry and
I got clean air just offshore with a big beach recovery area. If its big SW
we'll have to go to Waukeegan or forget it. I'm not going to Waukeegan. Am
bringing my windsurfer just in case.
Tim
I'm going to meet you guys out there wherever you go today, so let me know
what time and where you are going to be.

Went to Montrose last night and got pummeled on the beach. Not much wind
at ground level, put up a big kite and got tossed around when it caught the
gusts above the wind shadows. I'm thinking Montrose doesn't work in S/SW
winds except for SSE downwinders possibly to Hollywood/Thorndale Beach wih a
big board and long lines.
Terry and I are planning to try North Ave today in the early afternoon.
Went there last night. You can easily walk out and launch beyond the steel
piers in front of the boathouse. Coming back farther down the beach could
get tricky getting over the steel fence that runs below the water between
the piers. Diversey point in back of the mounted indian statue could
become the fail safe landing point. Flat rocks lie at the base of the
point with a grassy landing area above the rocks on the lake side of the
statue.
The shore line from North Ave to Diversey runs more North/South than any
other nearby point. While the piers make it more than a little
intimidating, if we can find a way around them it could become an ideal
launch on SSE winds.

Does anyone want to give Montrose a try tonight??
Just back from wedding in San Diego. They kite on Mission Bay there in a
very small area and flat water compared to Montrose using mainly twin tips
and wake boards. Saw lots of PL ARC's which they use rigged with a "brake
doublers" pulley system. This system which employs pulleys on the end of
their bars effectively doubles the movement of the brake lines at the end of
their bars. I've rigged my bars with this setup and hope to try it soon.

FYI, am forwarding comments by Pete Nordby, shaper for Zero Gravity on
Orlando Surf Expo that included kites. My take on his comments is that the
cost of kite gear will come down as new players enter the market. The new
players I've heard of include North Rhino Kites, Neil Pryde, and AiRush as
well as some European kite makers. Peter who rides a lot of different
stuff, speaks highly of the Cabrinia Black tips and AiRush. The shop owner
in Corpus is touting the new North Rhino's which he maintains that North
built incredibly tough. Naish has a couple of new kites including a 4 line
Aero, like an ARX only easier to relaunch and a new 2 line Virus kite.
I've flown the new ARC 1410. Its a fabulous kite.
Back from short trip to San Diego this Sunday afternoon. Have replaced
stolen kites and hope to see you all soon on the water. Windsurfers around
Chicago universally consider October their best sailing month. I see no
reason why it shouldn't be the best for us kiters.

Tim

Tim,
Just got back from Surf Expo in Orlando. Lots of stuff to look at ........
but not much really newsworthy, except that there are lots of 1st time
manufacturers entering into the kite market. Clearly the established kite
makers have a destinct advantage. The only "new" kite manufacturer that
realy had a well designed and constructed line is AiRush, which has been in
the kite and kite accessories market since 1998. They took a whole extra
year to develop their new line of kites and they look great! I've seen them
flown too (I was the "constant varible" in their final testing here in
Corpous over the summer) and they jump unbelievably easily and high. The
Peter Lynn kites are basically jyust getting minor tweaks, and the 14 being
added.
I'm ready to get started on a new "tanker" by the end of this week or Monday
at the latest. I'm not surprised at all that U're seeing interest in the big
boards, as I feel that big boards that still keep high-performance
characteristics is the most neglected area of our sport. There wasn't even a
single board at the trade show truly filling that niche ............. go
figure!
Pete
I went but didn't even set up the kite. It was so gusty. (the weather report
said gusting to 22 kt. but it looked to me it was more than that, and the
lake was rough which big waves.
Getting cold!
Tim, with your experience, what is the limit of cold temperature to go out
there? All this weather is new to me. (I am from Cancun)
tks.

Dear Fellow Kite Surfers & Wind Surfers
Last night thieves burglarized our garage, taking all my foil kites. I
expect they will try to fence them back to kiters somewhere. Please keep
your eyes out for someone trying to sell the gear listed on the attached.
Because I expect the thieves will try to fence them probably on a nearby
beach or at Windward please keep an eye out an call me if you see them. In
this regard, kiters, watch your kites. In 15 years of Windsurfing, we've
had our garage gone through a number of times and I've never lost any
windsurfing gear. Last night the thieves took all our kites and left the
boards.
By copy of this I'm asking Jackie to keep an eye out for the gear and post
the attached notice on her used gear board. Dimi and Tom if you would
forward this notice to EWA members and Tom to your e-mail list of
windsurfers, I'd certainly appreciate your help.

Last night Andy and I got out in light winds and water barely whitcaping.
First time for me on new 14.0 ARC pre production kite made at Peter Lynn
loft in NZ. Kite has awesome power and cruises upwind. With double wall
would think power equivaent to 21-24m Naish ARX without the bladder weight
and pumping. It inflates via zippered slot in the middle as you lay out
your lines.

Neil,
We have been kiting in Montrose Beach. This beach runs east-west, and hooks
to the north. By standing on the beach and looking to the lake your nose
points to the north, which its a little confusing, since in Chicago we are
used to have the lake on the east.
We had kite here in almost every wind direction, for some advanced boarders
even South wind works, because they ride away from the shore and then head
north to Hollywood or Foster beach. (I personally stay away from South
winds,
last time a lot to swim back) Usually N, NW, NE winds work great and are
constant (other directions in my experience when strong are gusty)
I've also tried the beaches in Highland park/Winetka, this is great for
N, S winds. and also heard about Indiana dunes or somewhere near.
After labor day, the lifeguards left the beaches, so now you can try almost
every beach., (before that, only Montrose or Evanston near Chicago)
Almost for sure, any day around 2-6pm in a windy day you will find us in
Montrose. I always check this link before hading to the beach:
http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/KCGX.html
I started boarding this season, so please also listen to other boarders.
Comments, advice welcome.

The biggest crowds are at Montrose Ave beach, which
works only for NE, E and SE winds. Some of us have
been known to drive out to Inidiana for W, NW, N.
For everything else (i.e. the prevailing SW) stay in
Michigan... :)

Brandon,
It looks E/SE today that makes Montrose the call. I hope to be on the
water by 5:00 in the forecast holds. E/SE means flat water side off
launching inside the hook. Because of the curve in the shoreline its also
very safe. If you break down offshore, you'll get blown into Foster or
Hollywood. If it goes SE you have to be careful coming back if you get
blown down to the West end of Montrose by the jet ski launch. The trees
and seawall create wind shadow that kills the wind. If this happens, plan
on unkooking and working the kite like mad to get in.

Tim

With your Wipika experience, perhaps you can give him some tips on making

having him going upwind like you soon.
Please add Bill to your e-mail lists for kiting info. In this regard,

No wind this weekend. Tim and I had our best runs ever on Thursday.
In big on-shore winds and waves, I got out to the buoys, way out past the
shore breaks.
I think this was due to the high winds and the fact that I was using 40M
lines. The kite went to the edge of the wind window, but still had power,
which allowed me to edge against a kite that was 30 degrees further forward
than normal. I felt at times like I was going nearly straight up wind! It
was tricky because if the kite got in the power zone, I was going downtown,
we had wind gusting to 30 knots.

Dear Kitesurfing enthusiasts,
I know many of you through kitesurfing sessions. I am now the local
distributor for Litewave Designs Wake N Style board (for fun only). The
board is a twin tip design. I now ride this board 95% of the time as it is
great for cutting upwind. Twin tips can be a bit more challenging to learn
on than directionals, but the payoff comes with improved freeriding,
airtime, and no more jibing. If anyone is interested in getting their hands
on one of these, please call me at 312.391.6075. I should also be at
Montrose Wednesday evening for a session and you can see the board in
action. http://www.litewavedesigns.com/SITE/HTML/theboards.html

going. Am dying to try new PL light wind foil.

I just got through getting my kite repaired at North
Sails in Chicago, they do really well. 2 rips and it
was abt $65 to repair.
I am converting an 8' surfboard into a kiteboard and
am looking for places to learn how to modify or pay
someone to modify.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Gavin

In a NE wind, do you plan on launching from Foster beach tomorrow? I would
like to meet you out there and see where you take off from, since I am only
familiar with Montrose. Also, if anyone has a kiteboard they want to sell,
I know a couple people that would be interested.
Brandon
P.S. Anyone know a good sewing shop to repair a ripped kite? My main strut
has ripped completely off from the leading edge of the kite.

Terry,
Can you add Bill Wiley to your kitesurfing lists? Bill was getting some
nice rides on a converted surfboard on Friday on a 16.5 Wipika Airblast.
With your Wipika experience, perhaps you can give him some tips on making
it work. He bought my H-20 carbon 0G kiteboard. I expect this combo will
having him going upwind like you soon.
Please add Bill to your e-mail lists for kiting info. In this regard,
tomorrow's forecast is looking reasonable from the NE. If it holds, I'm
going. Am dying to try new PL light wind foil.

By the way, yahoo groups are tied in with a bunch of
other services, so there's a group web page with space
for files and photos. It's at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kitesurf-chicago
You can upload photos if you're a yahoo member (free
membership), I put up one that a friend of mine caught
at Montrose several weeks ago. The sweet thing is you
can now order prints of the photos to be made directly
off of the uploaded files and mailed to you. This
particular one was made with a 3.3 Mpix Canon, but the
light was pretty crappy so it looks grainy from
contrast limitations of the chip. If you catch some
good action feel free to share it, there's 30 MB of
space.
> Is anybody planning on going tonight or this weekend?
I did a brilliant thing today, drove out to Montrose
around noon (45 minutes from where I live) and realized
I left the bar and lines at home. D'oh! I'll come out
if it's 15+ knots, but the forecast for this weekend
does not look promising.
I'm planning to go to Hatteras in a couple of weeks to
see the East coast championship and spend a week camping
and kiting. Anyone else headed in that direction?
