If you want to learn to kite in Chicago and can't go to Corpus or Hatteras this Spring I'd suggest getting a small foil kite and a mountain board and learning on the beach at Montrose before the guards arrive. You definitely need some sort of helmet to do this and a kite harness. Riding a mountain board on the beach closely approximates riding on the water with easier recovery as you just step back on the board rather than having to swim after it.
