Visited Wolf Lake today 12-16-05 in between kiting session with Paul
and Yoki.
Wolf is frozen over. The main gate is closed but there is an open
pedestrain gate. I spoke to the cops and firemen at their office
across the street and they said they do not mind us riding there.
They said that if anyone would question our presence it would be the
local park district but far as they know there should be no problem.
I asked about snowmobiler or fisher's. They said historically there
have been no winter users of this side of Wolf lake and ice fishers
normally fish on the other side of Wolf. Why??? Good question.
If gateis closed best place to park would be by the street adjacent
to the white hen pantry...if the gate is open which the officers said
that it is once in a while then the lot is wide open but unplowed.
I walked the first 10 feet from shore close to the corner house (
shalower there) for good reason. It was frozen solid and though I am
no frozen lakes guru the whole lake looked solid frozen over and the
ice was the opaque type, the one that looks solid. The snow also
stayed stuck to the ice and was not being drifted away.
I think SW will be the best and fortunatley the most we get during
winter since we will be riding towards the shallow end close to the
rock with flag and at least in the back of your mind feel safer that
you are in knee deep water. Any direction will work but think SW will
be the most logical direction.
I will be hitting Wolf on the next SW day as long as the temps don't
dip over freezing from now on.
Like always, there is safety in numbers.
Cheers,
Gerard
PS
Cop told me: kite at your own risk.
PSS
I will plan to go back possilby next week with Scott, rope and
fishing drill on hand to check on ice thickness, plan to check ice
thickness by the boat channell close to shore and south of that which
is the deeper area. Will update again
