Andrew, good to see another hanglider pilot interested in
kiteboarding. Hangliding was my addiction for 20 years now then it
was windsurfing and now it is kitesurfing. I still do some coastal
ridge flying here in michigan. I live in New Buffalo Michigan on the
lake across the lake from Chicago.
Who are you teaching for? I assume you are aerotowng with someone in
the chicago area. I know some of the guys in the area and am curious
who you are hanging out with.
In case you are not aware the west coast of Michigan has the best
coastal soaring areas of anywhere in the united states. The closest
coastal soaring area is Mt.Baldy in Michigan City Indiana. It is 5
miles from my house and faces north-northwest.It has 8 miles of
soarable ridge averaging 50-125 ft tall. It is soarable in 12-15 mph.
Warren Dunes state park is up the coast 25 miles and faces northwest.
It has 15 miles of soarable ridge. Saugutuck Michigan is another site
up the coast that faces west and has 5 miles of soarable ridge. The
Granddaddy of all the Michigan coastal soaring areas is in the
northern part of the state. Frankfort Michigan Green Point launch is
450 feet high and rivals torrey Pines in California for light wind
soaring potential. It faces sw-west and is a beautiful place to fly.
All of the hangliding launch areas require a special permit to have
access to the site. Paragliders use these sites also. If you want
more information about flying in Michigan or want to hook up for some
flying close to home in Michigan City let me know. My Home phone is
269-469-4332. Im free almost any time to play.
