I saw Randy Stoklos today at the 6-manin
Manhattan. He was on the same team as Stein Metgzer, Fred,
Garrido, Eli Farifield and a few others. They played for
TEAM PUMA. They beat my friends from TEAM MobkeyButt.
They were in the winners' bracket. I'm not sure how
they did as I went home.

Randy looked great and
really bombed the ball. Stokie also managed to stuff a
few here and there, like he used to when he was
playing out on the AVP Tour.

I had those 1992 AVP Beach cards with me. Randy
had his separate card along with earning MVP honors
(I think). They also had a Smith-Stokie card in
there as well. I totally forgot about them or else I
would have politely asked Randy to sign those so we
could give them away in our club. Hopefully, there will
be more chances in a Stokie sighting in the near
future.
My friend, Maria, pointed out to me that Stokie
was there. She was stoked to get a photo taken with
him and then she used her camera to take one of us.
So, I wish to thank her and we'll see that photo
online soon! ;O
Today, I saw my #1 idol (besides my family) today
at Hermosa Beach! There was Randy Stoklos, who was
sporting a LA Lakers hat. I had my picture taken with him.
We chatted for a lil bit and he went to go sit down
to watch the game.

It's always a great honor
to see him out and talk to him. I really miss Randy
out on Tour, but I have tons of memories that I'll
always cherish!

;O,
JC
I'm not sure if this is true or not. But someone
posing as Tim Hovland, or the "mighty Hov" himself, is
challenging Randy Stoklos and Sinjin Smith in a winner take
all type of tournament. The winner takes home $50,000
and I'm guessing the loser doesn't get
anything.

I saw this message posted on the AVP web site's
chat.

It would be great to see them two teams
battle it out again. I've heard that Stokie is in great
shape. I say "let's bring it on!" It would be great to
see some of the dynasties out on the beach in action
again! How I miss the good "ole" days of Stokie-Smith
vs. Hovie-Dodd!
Karch/Doble and Ian/Beef are out. Holdren/Rogers enter the "main draw." For more

I saw that Randy Stoklos came over for a few
minutes, with his two young children, to watch Sorrento's
action. By the time he got there with his kids, the last
two games between Lee/Brent versus Ian/Stein and
Jewell/Bacil versus Kerins/Martin were into some great
volleyball action. It was great to see Randy out and
everyone was excited to see him.
Holdren/Rogers prevail over IMAN/Beef by the
score of 15-9. But, it's not a bad showing for
IMAN/Beef, who wind up with the silver medal, points and
prize money.

Congrats to both teams! BTW,
EFONOI/Dainger placed 3rd!

Unfortunately, Mark doesn't use the computer very
much and woldn't know how to use the internet. I would
have loved to converse with him more about my idol,
Randy Stoklos.

So, Randy, if you read this,
please feel free to e-mail me sometime. I know it has
been tough for you lately. Just give me a holler if
you would love to chat cuz I'd love to interview
you!!
Mark Barber is one of Randy's closest pals, from
my assessment. here is what i wrote:

well,
today was great! There was a team from Japan playing at
the beach! It turns out that they're being coached by
Mr. Mark Barber, the man who's great friends with
Randy Stoklos as well as coaching Stoklos way back
when. Anyway, we introduced ourselves. I thought he was
Matt Barber, the photographer. I should have known
better and save myself the embarrassment (lol). The
Japanese players' names are Ko Ozaki and Taichi Morikowa.
Karch/AJ have played them previously in an FIVB tourney,
according to Mr. Barber. Ko''s 6'1'' and have some really
mean jump serves. If you can recall AJ's ace serve to
Karch (from Manhattan back in 93 I believe), Ko served
one right at Karch...just like AJ did to him years
before! It was amazing! Barber's been training them for 3
years (according to Mrs. Barber). Taichi is 6'3'' and
he's a toothpick! I think he has a skinnier waist size
than me! LOL Look for them to play on the AVP
Qualifier Tour, especially the weekend of the Alero event
as they'll be playing in Huntington Beach!!!!
They're sponsored by Redsand, so it's nice to see Steve
Timmons still sponsoring guys!

Mark and I talked a
lot about Randy. I learned a lil bit from Mark about
Randy that I didn't know. But,. mostly Mark was testing
me for the trivia of Stoklos and the others. He and
his wife were quite impressed! lol He said he'd talk
to Randy and sees if he remembers me
(lol).

That's all for now!;O
JC
MC, thank you very much for forwarding me the
photo of Randy. I surely appreciate it! ;O I'm glad
that you liked the article as much as I
did.

Curtis, Randy's brother, told me that he sent it to
Stokie and he enjoyed it as well.

The photo is a
great one, just like the ones you have added to our
club!

Thanks again, MC.
JC
Thanks JC for forwarding that article my way, it
was one of the best article's I've read in a long
time. Mike Dodd was right on the money with this one.
I'm going to crop that photo and send it to you so
you can use it in your club.
When I asked Randy why he didn't get back with
Sinjin, he was his usual honest & straightforward self:
"Sinjin & I spoke a little about getting back together,
but I just don't feel the fire I used to have," he
said. "I truly enjoyed being one of the stars of the
sport, & when things started to falter on the AVP Tour &
the crowds started to diminish, it started to get a
lot less fun for me."

We agreed that during
our last few years, the player's tent had gone from a
familiar refuge to a strange place where we didn't know
three-quarters of the players in the tent.

One incident
of disrespect had a lasting effect. A young player
took Stokie's shoes to go on a hike while Stokie was
playing a match. The player brought the shoes back later
all muddy & never said a word to Stokie until much
later. It wasn't the last straw, but it was the little
things like that that began to make the tour less
desirable for Stokie. I must admit that I thoroughly
enjoyed Stokie's tirade while he was looking for the
perpetrator of the crime against his shoes.

That's
one thing about Randy -- he always has been pure
emotion. There was never any hidden agenda or contrived
emotions for a situation. His antics on the court, the way
he played to the crowd, & even the way he confronted
refs or fellow players was from the heart. It was
hated by some but loved & respected by most. Randy was
one of the instrumental few that pushed beach
volleyball to some of its brightest moments.

Off the
court, Randy's persona changes 180 degrees. He's quiet,
almost shy. He's a doting father to his 2 beautiful
children, Shay & Shane.

Everything my family & I
have I owe to guys like Karch (Kiraly), Sinjin, Hov,
(Steve) Timmons, Whit (Mike Whitmarsh) -- all the great
players before the modern era. And, of course, Randy.
Thank you.
Stokie had given me the "Kong" (one-hand block) &
I was too embarrassed to call a timeout to tape my
finger. Smith/Stokie went on to win the double final, &
what made the loss even more nauseating was the
extended celebration they went through, making us wait
even longer at the net to shake hands.

Of
course, that win was No. 63 for Sinjin, & that broke the
all-time record held by Ron Von Hagen, so I guess they
were entitled. Worse than the celebration was facing
the brutal truth that my best game wasn't good enough
to deal with Stoklos & his all-around skills.

The way he was blocking had elevated the game to a
level I was not accustomed to. Sound familiar? I
believe those same words have been used to describe Jack
Nicklaus, & in more recent times, Tiger Woods. I remember
sitting in the hotel room with my wife, Patty, confessing
that in my heart, I didn't feel like I could deal with
Stokie's block. Patty told me that maybe I needed to take
a hard look at my game & search for a way to win.
Great advice from a great lady.

To make a long
story short, I did take a long, hard look at my game. I
hit a lot less & moved the ball around a lot more --
especially against Stokie -- and ended up finishing the year
on a good note. Hov & I actually won the last 4
tournaments of the summer. Stokie's excellence had forced me
& everyone else on the tour to try to raise our
games to another level.
from NBCOlympics.com & Mike
Dodd

Stoklos/Smith? Don't hold your breath …

Things have
been rather slow in the beach volleyball world, but
get ready for things to heat up real fast.

During this time of winter reflection, I often thought
about Randy Stoklos. Three years ago, when he left the
AVP Tour, I thought he was still playing awesome. I
fully expected Randy to end up back with Sinjin (Smith)
to finish off his career on the FIVB Tour & maybe
earn a well-deserved appearance in Sydney. I finally
caught up with Randy the other day. It was so nice to
talk with him.

Great memories of the many
battles & great times we shared still fill my mind. I
remember the Hawaii Open, in 1987, when Tim Hovland & I
found ourselves in yet another final with
Smith-Stoklos. It had been a rough year for Hov & I, but that
weekend -- thanks to (Brent) Frohoff-(Scott) Ayakatubby,
who upset Smith/Stokie in the semis -- we looked
good.

We won the winners bracket, & the only
obstacle in the way of the title was the ever-present
Smith-Stoklos, who battled their way back into the final. I'll
never forget during a critical part of the 1st game,
around 12-12, Hov gave me a perfect set -- a ball that
for the previous 10 years I had buried without
thinking twice. Only this time, I hit the ball & before I
could even react, the ball was jammed back into my
hand, dislocating my little finger.

Here's something funny to read:
I just saw
Karch, AJ, Adam Jewell and Scott Davenport today
practicing. They were great! Adam Jewell used his foot to get
a ball up, a la Randy Stoklos in "Side Out." I
wanted to ask Adam (jokingly of course)," So, those
dance lessons paid off, eh?" But, I chickened out
because maybe he wouldn't get the joke. ;O

Style
Early reports say
Brazil remains dominant.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
-- Two US 4-man teams headed to Brazil this weekend
(February 26-27, 2000) to compete in the 1st ever "Volley
Four" -- an event whose name hopefully translates
better into Portuguese than English. Early reports have
the Brazilian team of Tande, Giovane, Anjinho, & Fred
winning the tournament, comprised of 2 American & 2
Brazilian teams.
American teams were Canyon Ceman/Ian
Clark/Dain Blanton/Eric Fonoimoana -- a team with numerous
historical partner pairing, & Stein Metzger/Lee
LeGrande/Collin Smith/Bill Boullianne. The other Brazilian team
had Loiola, Adriano, Ricardo, & Franco. By most
accounts, the favored team won.

The tournament was
organized to ensure a USA/Brazil final. More details to
follow as they become available. (Portuguese is just
different enough from Spanish to present Beachmania
considerable difficulties in translation.).
