extensive archive of past champions. We are going through
all old record archives, but could use your help. Our
goal is to build complete biographies including images
of those<br>who helped create the sport. Who are
your favorite past champions and why? We would love to

Also we are looking for any old photos of Sinjin and

The section will list all tournaments that the AVP is

information.<br>Indoor Sand Facilities - Here in Southern California we
are very fortunate to have great weather and beaches.
However,we often become spoiled. For instance, if the
weather drops<br>into the sixties with the slightest of
winds, it is a good bet that nobody will be playing
ball. Being from the midwest,I remember praying for 50
degree weather in the spring so we could get outside and
play some ball. It always seemed to<br>take about two
weeks to get your sand legs. In addition to playing
volleyball in less than desirable conditions, we often
played at indoor sand volleyball facilities just
to<br>keep the touch of the ball. These facilities are very
common in the Midwest and East Coast. Volleyball players
are truly diehard fans and participants. The AVP
salutes those players<br>that make the phone calls, drive
an hour in bad weather (rain and snow), and pay
court fees just to play at an indoor sand volleyball
facility. This is dedication. The AVP is looking<br>for
best and the worst indoor sand volleyball facilities
and stories about the players who play in them.Send
us an email today with your story and images. We
have heard of people playing in heated barns in the
winter, is this true?<br>We need email messages from all

I got my photos back today! The photo that i have of Randy signing the tank top
is awesome! He almost fills the photo! It's definitely one of my most cherished
photos of Randy!
Oh this is going to sound totally crazy, but I
took Randy's picture of him signing the tank top. I
just wanted to have it since I want to write a book
one day and I think that would be one of the best
photos of Randy to add!<br><br>Randy is also in great
shape! In this tournament, I could see he was putting
his best foot foward and trying his hardest, which I
truly admire.<br><br>His team hat this blue beanie hats
with a white shirt and these shorts with shiny stars
on them. They were one of the best outfitted teams
at the event.<br><br>Lewy's event reminded me of the
Manhattan Beach 6-man event, with the exception of the
teams. There were some athletes there that play on the
Tour or that played during college. I even saw Kim
Coleman, who's one of my classmates from Corona Del Mar
Hig School. Patty Dodd was asking me about Kim since
one of Patty's friends is looking for a partner.
I was able to talk to Randy on Saturday. I saw
him as he came into the tournament. We exchanged
"hello's" and I asked him when he had a chance to sign some
pitures and the coveted FILA Stoklos tank top (that I
received from his younger brother, Curtis). Randy said
"sure." <br><br>Randy played for Team Skyy Patrol, which
is a type of Vodka. I'll have pictures up soon!

U.S. Honorees at Home<br>By MIKE BRESNAHAN, TIMES
STAFF WRITER<br><br>There was a party Friday in Buenos
Aires, a gala honoring the top volleyball players &
coaches of the 20th century, but some guests of honor
didn't show up because of a tiff over transportation
expenses.<br><br>A standoff between the sport's international
governing body & USA Volleyball left Karch Kiraly & former
national team coach Marv Dunphy caught in the middle ...
and stuck at home.<br><br>The host of the gala, the
Federation Internationale de Volleyball, believed USA
Volleyball was responsible for the airfare for 3 U.S.
athletes & 2 coaches, a total cost of about $7,500. USA
Volleyball, which has struggled financially in recent years,
said the FIVB should have picked up the tab for
Kiraly, Dunphy, Sinjin Smith & Randy
Stoklos.<br><br>Smith used frequent-flier miles to get to the gala.
Stoklos paid his own way. Doug Beal, the 5th U.S. award
recipient, is coaching the U.S. national team in a
tournament in Buenos Aires & attended the
ceremony.<br><br>The FIVB agreed to pay for honorees' lodging, meals &
local transportation. It drew the line at airline
tickets.<br><br>"It's unfortunate that U.S. Volleyball couldn't afford
to send their stars," FIVB President Ruben Acosta
Hernandez said. "We would've loved to have seen [Kiraly &
Dunphy] in Buenos Aires."<br><br>USA Volleyball lost
$400,000 last year, mostly because of travel costs
incurred playing in international tournaments before the
Sydney Olympics, said Kerry Klosterman, executive
director of USA Volleyball.<br><br>Klosterman said the
honors were appreciated, but not the costs. "We frankly
didn't have the money budgeted to do it," he
said.<br><br>Kiraly, a member of gold-medal indoor teams in 1984 &
1988 & a gold medalist in beach volleyball at the 1996
Olympics, said he was "a little baffled" by the FIVB's
request.<br><br>"If you're going to name some awards & they're only
every 100 years, you'd think the FIVB would pay for
it," he said. "I totally understand USA Volleyball's
response. They're pretty tightly strapped for
cash."<br><br>Kiraly said he probably wouldn't have attended the gala
in any event because he was moving from his San
Clemente home this weekend.<br><br>In a letter sent to
Kiraly after he'd declined the invitation, an FIVB
official wrote that USA Volleyball should pay the airfare
because the FIVB already invests heavily in
volleyball.<br><br>"It's important for the associations of each country to
understand that they're not only there to sit & wait &
receive, but that they also have responsibilities towards
the world volleyball family," wrote Jean-Pierre
Seppey, FIVB general manager. "We consider it ... a duty
of USA Volleyball to send you all to the 20th
century awards."<br><br>Smith, who has longstanding ties
with the FIVB & is the president of the beach
volleyball world council, said he was surprised by USA
Volleyball's refusal to pay.<br><br>"They have money in their
coffers, it's just how they choose to spend it," said
Smith, who retired from the sport after the Manhattan
Beach Open in August. "They don't choose to apparently
spend it to send athletes from our country to receive
awards. It's a shame.<br><br>"The FIVB considers the U.S.
a very, very important part of the growth of the
sport on a worldwide basis. If the USA is not [fully]
represented, it's a big problem."<br><br>Dunphy coached the
U.S. team to a gold medal in 1998 and still has ties
to USA Volleyball, having served as an assistant
coach in Sydney.<br><br>"It's unfortunate that there's
a tug of war," said Dunphy, who also coaches at
Pepperdine. "You've got to look at it on both sides. On their
side, if you have a party, you want peo

VOLLEYBALL<br>Popularized by Sinjin Smith and
Randy Stoklos, beach volleyball is one of the
fastest-growing sports today. Dozens of men and women now earn a
living playing professional beach volleyball, not to
mention the bonuses they receive from all those
endorsement and modeling contracts.<br><br> Beach players
suffer the same injuries as indoor players, except they
don't have as many cuts and bruises due to the softness
of the sand. However, they are prone to ankle
sprains from turning an ankle on the sand's uneven
surface.<br><br> They also have to worry about the heat and the
sun. Make sure to drink plenty of liquids before and
after playing beach volleyball. During play, stop every
15 minutes to have something to drink, either water
or an electrolyte drink such as Gatorade.<br><br>
You must also protect yourself against the sun. Wear
a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. If you go
into the water to cool off, put the sunscreen on
again. Several companies now make special sports
sunscreens, which supposedly hold up against sweat. I still
recommend that you put sunscreen on lavishly and often
during a day at the beach.<br><br> With only two players
covering the court, and with the traction problems caused
by sand, you have to be in great condition to play
beach volleyball. Try to work out two or three times a
week within your training range to improve your
cardiovascular conditioning.
