HEADLINES OLYMPIANS PAST, PRESENT AND<br>FUTURE AT THE
COLORADO CROSSROADS<br>IRVINE, California (March 6, 2000)
-- Beach Volleyball Olympian,<br>Christopher St.
John "Sinjin" Smith, and FIVB Gold Medalist
and<br>Boulder native, Ian Clark, will make a special guest
appearance at the<br>Colorado Crossroads Junior National
Volleyball Qualificiation<br>Tournament, held at the
Colorado Convention Center March 17-19.<br>Smith and Clark
appear courtesy of MIKASA SPORTS, the
Official<br>Supplier of Volleyballs to the 2000 Summer Olympic
Games.<br>Sinjin Smith, a native of Pacific Palisades, Calif., is
a 5-time FIVB<br>World Champion and competed in the
1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta,<br>Georgia. He was the
first player to reach the 100 win mark in the
history<br>of beach volleyball and held the record for open
wins for over a decade<br>with 139 total career
victories. In 1999, Smith re-teamed with Olympic<br>partner,
Carl Henkel of Redondo Beach, Calif. and the duo is
challenging<br>for their second Olympic Beach Volleyball appearance
at Bondi Beach in<br>Sydney, Australia this
September. As members of the U.S. Beach<br>Volleyball
National Team, Smith and Henkel compete full time on
the<br>FIVB World Tour, the official beach volleyball Olympic
qualification<br>tour for the Sydney Games. <br>Smith played
collegiately at UCLA, leading the Bruins to
multiple<br>National Championships and earning All-American honors.
Smith is a<br>member of the FIVB's International Beach
Volleyball World Council,<br>serving as its President, and
at age 42 is the oldest active beach
volleyball<br>Olympian.<br>Appearing with Smith is U.S. National Beach
Volleyball
Teammate, Ian<br>Clark, native of Boulder, Colo. Clark won
a gold medal at the 1999<br>FIVB World Tour Mexico
Open and is currently ranked fifth on the
U.S.<br>Beach Volleyball depth chart. He was named Rookie of
the Year in 1995<br>on the American-based Assoc. of
Volleyball Professionals beach<br>volleyball tour. He led
the Pepperdine Waves to an NCAA Men's<br>National
Championship, followed by a gold medal performance at
the<br>1993 U.S. Olympic Festival.<br>Joining Smith and Clark
at the Colorado Crossroads event will be the<br>U.S.
Paralympic Team among others. The team will do a
demonstration<br>on court on Saturday, March 18, immediately followed
by an autograph<br>session with team members and
staff.<br>All autograph sessions will take place at the
Colorado Convention<br>Center, Lobby B, in the MIKASA
booth. The first 200 people in line to<br>meet Sinjin
Smith and Ian Clark on Saturday, March 18, will receive
