Hey Roger,

Thank you for the nice compliment.  I try to provide the best and most accurate information about the Trikke as I can.  I have so much more that I am going to add.  I just have to get a “round-tuit”.  Know where I can buy one?  :o)

I think the Inverness ride is going to be an excellent Trikke Event.  I’ll communicate with BJ to see how we can promote and get as many Trikke riders as we can.  We’ll show them that the Trikke is becoming very popular and lots of fun as well as fitness.  I just briefly looked at what BJ sent so I have to do some more research myself to see what it’s all about.  I’m meeting up with BJ this Saturday to do a ride with him and some of his First Coast Trikkers.  I’ll get more info then.  We’d love for you to be able to make the Inverness ride.  It would be a pleasure to finally get to meet you.

Andy;
Nice instruction 'guide'. Hope I never need it, but good to know I have it saved on the HD if the time comes. Is Trikke Tampa planning to make BJ's October 1, Inverness ride a 'joint' club ride? Don't know if I'll be able to get away, but I should have your "50'er" to you by then (at least I hope). Keep up the great work for us Trikkers.

State Rails to Trails ride on October 1, 2006 Inverness, FL

Come on out Trikkers in GA and Alabama too !

Hope we can all get together for the Withlacoochee State Trail ride on October 1, 2006. check it out at www.railstotrailsonline.com
There were 3 trikkers on it last year. Now with all the communication, think we can show off the trikkes and have a good time this year. This is the longest rails to trails in FL -- 46 miles long -- nice trail with lots of places to stop. There will be refreshment stops along the way. Do what distance you are comfortable with. Hopefully we can have trikkers from all parts of the state since it is on a Sun. Come Sat spend the night in the country area. As we see how many are interested, time for us to start -- starting time is 7 - 9 a.m and the SAG stops end at 3 pm

Claudio;
Just checked out the Koenig backpack; its 430cc (20hp) with a 2-bladed prop (the
3-blade is on the 64hp on the ultralight, Flying Inflatable Boat). With a
long/smooth enough runway, (and if I am brave/crazy enough) should be able to
reach 50 mph. Have gotten my T-12 up to 17mph (via GPS) on some of the small FL
'hills'. 50mph would be a real "trip" (no pun intended). Would have to work up
to it in stages. Have to develop a test 'flight' plan. Maybe just a daydream on
a 'liquid sunshine' Florida day.

I also have a link to Trikke Tech’s manuals under my maintenance page.  It includes the wheel replacement.  But, you shouldn’t have to change brake pads out.  Only when you’re switching from Poly’s originally mounted on the T8C  to rubber air tires.  All you do is put the poly’s on and you might have to do a slight brake adjustment.

I also agree that it shouldn’t be required to go to poly’s if you have properly inflated the tires.  ONLY on an ideal surface will the poly’s perform better and only by speed.  The security you get from the added traction and the versatility of the surfaces to learn on should make the air tires perfectly fine.

http://trikketampa.com/web_template/maint.html

One of the biggest problems I see when people are trying to learn is they’re trying too hard.  Once they have the basics of turn and lean and keep the determination then they should start making progress.  Don’t focus on the feet but only be conscious of the weight distribution.  Keep the shoulders parallel to the handle bars when turning and do not use the elbows (don’t lock them either).

I guess my two cents is almost a dollar with everybody elses!  :o)

>>>honestly we all know that being 30 pounds or more overweight isn't "healthy"...your body has to work harder to do EVERYTHING.<<<

I think I missed answering this one.  We all DO NOT KNOW such a thing at all and science does NOT show such a thing either - only the mass media which is of course, supporting the 40 BILLION DOLLAR A YEAR diet industry constantly nags about weight, hoping to sell diets, diet products, diet pills and weight loss surgery.

The body working harder in a society which never works hard enough is not necessarily a bad thing and in fact, may be why so many very fat people are actually very healthy i.e. because unlike lighter people, an overweight person in the course of moving around not only uses their muscles more and stresses their bones but also lightly exercises the heart which is a good thing.  Scientific studies show that osteoporosis is a disease of the slim folks and that fat folks have 40 percent LESS osteoporosis.

CDC figures actually showed that people in the overweight and obese weight ranges (BMI 26-35) LIVE longer than those in the so called "normal BMI" ranges (BMI 18.5-24)...  Some say these results reflect the probability that "normal weight" differs for different individuals and also that BMI normal weight ranges which are far more rigid than the Met-Life charts, may actually be underweight for many individuals - and it's a fact that being as little as 5 lbs underweight is MORE risky than being 70 lbs overweight!

But the bottom line is that most studies show health depends on fitness and the quality of diet.  Study after study has shown that health is determined by lifestyle REGARDLESS Of weight and while there may be a small advantage to being in the "normal weight range", Dr Rudy Leibel has shown (among others) that this advantage is not necessarily enjoyed by people who diet or calorie restrict to stay at lower weights than their bodies want.

Some studies show that slim people are at higher risk than fat people even if both the fat people and the slim people are exercisers (true of the Cooper Institute studies).

More importantly, it is critical to note that the yo yo dieting most people do to force their bodies down to a certain weight may be raising their risk of heart attack by 70 percent (according to Dr Phil who usually does his homework pretty well, I find).  People over the age of 65 who lost weight in the nuns' study had a 25 percent greater chance of developing senility or alzheimers - those who stayed the same had a 10 percent risk of senility and those who gained weight had a ZERO risk of senility.

The pig study of 2004 suggested that fat is a part of the immune system and can actually protect against disease.  Several studies show that fat tissue can strain out toxins from the blood stream and store them so they are not harming the person.

Gaesser stated that fat people have a 40 percent LESS chance of getting cancer than slim people.

It may very well be that in our toxin laden society, we are fatter to PROTECT us against the toxins and that our assiduously trying to get rid of every oz of adipose tissue may, in part, explain things like the cancer epidemic (a REAL epidemic which kills 557,500 people per year)

I found since gaining back the 27 lbs I lost (I actually gained back 35!), my immune system works for the first time in my life and I have become amazingly disease resistant (I had been dieting on and off since the age of 15!).

It's important to know this information because we, in seeking a healthier lifestyle through exercise and hopefully good dietary choices, should be aware of the fact that any kind of dieting is a high risk activity and may cause severe health repercussions.

Moderation in life is key! Obviously being slightly overweight isn't going to kill you. Being anorexic isn't healthy at all! Visually thin is in, but no one here ever knocks overweight people, but honestly we all know that being 30 pounds or more overweight isn't "healthy"...your body has to work harder to do EVERYTHING.

BJ,

It may not be about speed, but it sure used to be frustrating when walkers would pass me

I started Trikking because I wanted to escape the "lounge chair" feeling on my recumbent
trike. It does feel good to have your whole body activated while Trikking.

I assume it's just like switching to the air tires (which I have done). I would call trikke tech before doing anything...but the brakes have to be moved to the other hole--and it is the "other" brakes, different from the air tire brakes. I have poly wheels and brakes...could be coerced into selling them for the right price as I don't plan on going back to the poly.

It begs the question...Why would you like to change to poly wheels.

Tell them to fellow the installation of the air wheels found on the Trikke.com site backwards.

Most often people are not happy with the air wheels because they don’t inflate them to the recommended pressure. Please tell them to make sure they have at least 80psi before going backwards to the PU wheels.

BJ,

It may not be about speed, but it sure used to be frustrating when walkers would
pass me
on my Trikke.

I started Trikking because I wanted to escape the "lounge chair" feeling on my
recumbent
trike. It does feel good to have your whole body activated while Trikking.

Not 100% sure, but think all you need are the poly wheels. You don't have to change out the brakes.

True, and it definitely lets me go faster. However, I find I don't enjoy the ride as much. I guess I'll stick to wide, inefficient and FUN. ;)

Hey Claudio;
Just 'baiting' "dirtydog" to see if he can verify the article. I do have a
harness with a Koenig 3-cylinder (540cc) motor w/ 3-bladed prop on a 'backpack'
that I use to paramotor with. Haven't run the engine in a few years, but if I
get it running........there are many old 'training' airfields in the area with
looong runways. Might be a record attempt for 'powered' Trikke in my future
(with plenty of protective equipment for sure). Yes, I be sure to have the video
running!!!!!!!!

Two things…

1.There are only a handful of people that can make a Trikke do 15-18mph and that for a very short distance. I know many people claim they can, but I know better…their dreaming. The average speed for most very good Trikkers is between 10-12mph.

2. As for going 46mph with a leaf blower…no way. The fastest anyone has ever gone a Trikke is 48mph (world record)…that was on a very long and very steep mountain road in California.

I was wodering about that.  I tried it a couple of weeks ago.  It did propel me, but not at those speeds.  More like the average speed you Trikke at (15-18 MPH).  It was fun but awful noisey.

I sent Jimmy Evan's video to a none Trikking friend Peter. I answered his comments below:

This video changed my riding style.
Finally I am able to maintain a nice cruising speed. I had been carving too wide on level streets.

Tom,

After watching  Jimmy Evans ride, I  conclude the following that to be a successful Trikee rider you must:

1. have a large pack on your back strapped both around the shoulders and the waist;

Peter,

That's for his Camelbak water supply. If I bought one I'd get this one.
He has the big one because he's the guy who has Trikked across the USA and most of Europe.

2. be able to swing the upper body with abandon, not  worrying about falling and the fact that the shoulders are always going in the opposite direction from the feet;

His body weight is always centered between the wheels. A nice stable posture.

He doesn't have to worry about falling be cause ot the stability of three wheels.

His shoulders are always going the opposite of his feet just like you hands go the opposite of your feet when you walk or run.

I have never had the feeling that I might fall on a Trikke like I had on a two wheel recumbent at low speed clipped in to the pedals.

3. the right hand swing must always take the Trikee within 2" of the curb (YIKES!);
Not so! Look again. The curb is a foot away. The asphalt ends a foot before the vertical rise of the poured curb

4. the road surface must be free of  debris and recently resurfaced;

I hope that you watch for debris and holes while you walk. I do while Trikking.

5. with the unstated rule  that all premiums for medical insurance must be fully paid to date.

Were yours up to date when you were out on the Tour Easy and the Scarab those faithful days?

But, to you good friend, congratulations that  you have mastered the Trikee. It'aint look easy!

Neither was learning to ice skate.
