BikeWalk Virginia Event News Northern Neck RiverRide
Registration for the 2nd Annual Northern Neck RiverRide is now available online at:www.riverride.org. See the details below.
As the weather begins to cool in September, cyclists will travel the wonderful, scenic and flat back roads of Virginia's Northern Neck between the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers. The RiverRide has a route for cyclists of all skill levels.Within the tour are five bicycle routes which best represents the essence of the Northern Neck: the natural areas, strong ties to the water, picturesque farms, and of course, the history. Cyclists can choose tours of 19, 35, 54, or 66 miles in length or complete a full century ride of 104 miles!
New for this year's event, the YMCA Camp KeKoKa is the tent city location.Amenities include restrooms, showers, pool, basketball court, kayak landing, and a picturesque atmosphere.Indoor camping is also available for an extra charge. There are 6 total units available for rental. Each rental can house up to 12 campers.Individual units will be rented as a whole to groups of six or more campers.
The registration fee for the Northern Neck River Ride is $50.00 for adults; $25 for children ages 13 - 17 and $15 for children 12 and under. Registration includes lunch, free food at all rest stops, free admission to local museums along the route, a tour book with maps and route notes, SAG support, free Friday and Saturday camping and the Northern Neck RiverRide t-shirt.
For more information see www.riverride.org or call BikeWalk Virginia at 757-229-0507.
This year is the 29th annual Great Peanut tour it will be September 7-9. The campground they normally use has closed so camping is at the Greensville County High School. So it’s Friday evening through Sunday instead of Thursday through Sunday. There are also motels in the area. The rides are: 10 mi Friday, 40, miles Saturday + The 14 mile actual peanut tour, and a choice of 25 or 40 on Sunday. Great rest stops and you can sign up for breakfast and supper or if several of us go we can bring a grill and do that for one or more suppers. The tour is limited to 1500 so I’m not going to wait long, but I’ll wait a little and see if any want to grill before I register. Oh registration is $45.
This is a lot less than the 225 miles I rode last year but it should be fun anyway.
The registration form, which I have, says it’s ok to copy it so if you ate interested let me know ASAP.

Have you guys planned for the stream crossing that we will have to make on the temporary trail by-pass? I believe that we could use ties for the sub structure and then cover the top of the ties with 2X12 treated lumber to make a very serviceable bridge. What do you think?

Joe: Our MS 150 at Eastern Shore was somewhat like that. My daughter from King George showed up unexpectedly with her daughter Madison, and announced she was helping a friend move. I felt bad that I was doing two days of MS-150. Then that night I saw the weather report for Sunday and did the one-day option. We started three hours later than everyone else, but only did 60 miles. I hope next year that they organize it better and that we have a 75-mile one day option. I was never so happy that I did not plan to ride on Sunday.  THe weather was a disaster, and there was some question whether bikes would be allowed on the bridge, because of the wind. Saturday, I only averaged a little above 13 mph, because I never had the wind advantage, because I did not take the 75-mile option. Bill Hart

Sue and I have a small, old motorcycle trailer that I built a deck on and installed tie down rings that could easily carry two tandems or four singles. Old boat trailers with no rust and good running gear would work also--you just bolt on the wooden deck and viola! Anything to keep another SUV off the road. Small cheap trailers from a Home Depot or Lowes will also work, just more expensive but light and useful for many things.
Subject: Re: [kgvaba] More on the Tour de Chesapeake
Dave,
Just curious what kind of trailer you use to carry bikes. We don't want an SUV or van so I'm thinking of getting a trailer for carrying two tandems or other combinations for 4 people.

It's Bike Month! Celebrate with the Tour de Chesapeake
Tour de Chesapeake IX is right around the corner! If you haven't yet made plans to join us, do so now.
You can still register online or by phone. Walk-in registrations will be accepted, but we cannot guarantee a t-shirt for walk-ins.
Registration will take place at Thomas Hunter Middle School on Friday, May 18th from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm and again on Saturday, May 19th from 6:00 am to 10:00 am.
This tour is perfect as a family's first biking adventure, for the intermediate rider, and even the experienced veteran's season warm-up. Cyclists can choose tours of 17, 32, 40, 59, and 80 miles in length. We have added an additional scenic route this year at Horn Harbor and also tweaked some routes to provide more water views. We hope you will enjoy these new changes. More on routes.
Families, especially, will enjoy the abundant quiet, scenic lanes winding down forgotten coves on the Chesapeake Bay, the East River and the North River.
Mathews County -- Hospitality and Fun for Everyone
Mathews County's warm hospitality will be apparent all weekend long.
On Saturday, Bartlett's Café is providing a delicious lunch by the water's edge. Acoustical guitarist, Johnny St. Clair, will be playing and singing while you relax and enjoy the sea breezes and lunch.
Gwynn's Island and Horn Harbor both will have free music on Saturday night.
Bay Arts School is having a free barbeque dinner on Saturday after the ride (donations accepted to support their school) .
Mathews Massage Center will be on site at Thomas Hunter Middle School late Saturday morning and afternoon to relax you further. There is a fee for the massage.
There will be strawberry shortcake ready for you after the ride at Thomas Hunter Middle School.
Also, don't forget to stop by The Poddery before you leave Mathews. They fire create unique designs on site, including a large selection of water themes.

BikeWalk Virginia Newsletter
March 2007
BikeWalk Virginia is pleased to announce our new Event Director, Marc Sartori. Marc is a 2001 graduate of the University of Richmond with a BA in Health. He will graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Masters of Science in Sports Leadership in May.
Marc will "get his feet wet" as he joins us for the Tour de Chesapeake on May 18-20th. He will learn the ropes as we finalize the plans for Bike Virginia 2007. You will see him in many different positions on Bike Virginia - experiencing all the many facets of our event.
Please join us in welcoming Marc on board. He may be reached at msartori@....
Bike Virginia 2007 Reaches Capacity
We are pleased to announce that Bike Virginia has reached its capacity of 2,000 cyclists. We have created a waiting list for cyclists who missed the initial cut-off and have over 100 on the list. We have now discontinued the waiting list, as we do not want to keep cyclists in limbo for too long. As cyclists cancel, we will work our way down the list with replacement cyclists.
We are sorry we are not able to accommodate all cyclists wishing to join us. In order to ensure that we continue to produce a high quality event, we feel we need to keep our capacity at 2,000. If you have any questions about Bike Virginia, please contact Kim Berry, Tour Administrator, at info@....
We look forward to June and seeing all our returning and new friends. We have many special activities planned - check them out on the web at www.bikevirginia.org/2007/.
Thanks for taking this on and I encourage everyone who can to attend and ride. I will be teaching a class to the new BikeWalk bicycle recipients and will be unavailable. Next week, May 14 - 18 is bike to work week and the 18th is bike to work day. I plan to ride very day and I hope that each of you can find a way to ride to work at least once during the week.
Who wants to do a Saturday ride? We could meet at the KG old Elementary school and do the Dogue loop or meet at the Md. Welcome center and go to Cpt John's for lunch. Actually we culd meet and carpool across the bridge.

is create community events to get people out on bicycles--we also encourage our members to create events; perhaps you would like to create one such event?. For the past year I have beenconsummed with creating and maintaining the Dahlgren Railroad Heritiage Trail (www.friendsdrht.org) and the RF&P BikeWalk. Both organizations promote bicycling in a big way. Personally I prefer actions to creating newsletters. I look forward to seeing you on the road.
