I haven’t gone to any weekend rides as I live over on the other side of the river.

I’ve found that his road riding abilities are generally better than the parents’ comfort with having him out there.  So, it is mostly a psychological hurdle, not a skills one.  I have already had him riding on the shoulder of 301 (MD, where we have 10 ft shoulders) since you have to do that to go on half the rides from our house.

He generally rides at 8-9 mph when on his own bike, but will lag to 6-7 when tired/bored, or jump to 11-12 when motivated.

If you are willing to drive a bit, the Henson Creek trail in Fort Washington, about 25 miles over the Nice bridge is a nice option.  Only three road crossings in 6 miles, and practically flat, as it is a stream valley park.  I’m not sure what you may have in the other direction, in VA.

Some of you may also be interested in the Oxon Hill Bike Club century, which starts in Indian Head, MD.  There are routes of 30, 63, and 100 miles, and it is a nice set of roads.  For more info see the web site, www.ohbike.org .

Bill, don?t underestimate your grandson.  My son is up to 15 miles now, and he?s only 6 and 3/4.  Just takes a few increasing length rides to gain the confidence he can do it.

David: I can't come to King George this Saturday, as I originally planned.  I will probably be up by the second Saturday in August, which like August 13.  I hope that you continue to have rides.  Perhaps, you can interest David (my son in law) and Zachary (my 7-year old grandson) in the six-mile family ride from King George.  David rides a Wal_Mart mountain bike, while Zachary has a real nice BMX bike.  David also works at Dahlgren, and if he gets into biking, I might give him mine, when I upgrade my bike in the next few months.  David Greiber's phone number is 775-1836.  If he is not there, leave a message for my daughter Catherine.  Bill Hart

Joe,
The Veaseys and their kids and Bill and I.  A small group but dedicated.  Bill showed up late and caught us on the other side of 301 near the turn for Mathias Point and her rode on up Owens hill.  I stuck with the Veaseys  down Mathia Point to help them with their kids and give them a little slack if they needed it.  One cool thing was the sharp-eyed Jenna saw an owl (a GIANT owl--2 feet tall!) sitting in a tree about 10 yards off the road.  We will be in King George this Saturday and I expect several new folks to be there.

We start either at the parking lot of bld 1500 or bld
1470 depending on who is riding. Today we will start
at the 1500 location ~1615.

Joe,
The Veaseys and their kids and Bill and I. We will be in King George this Saturday and I expect several new folks to be there.

dj

By the way how was the ride Saturday? The third
Saturday of the month is work day at the gun club and
I need to be there.

Joe,
Glad to see the list getting some use.  I usually ride at lunch since I have classes most evenings or I would take you up on this offer.  Surely there must be someone out there that is interested.

Just a reminder that we will not have a group ride this weekend due to

Very Cool!  Thanks Joe!  This looks like a great time folks.  You could do the KGBA ride on Saturday morning, drive down to Powhatan in the afternoon camp out and enjoy the festival that afternoon and do the Tour de Vin (100, 65, 35, 10 mile rides are offered) on Sunday.  Gotta hurry since June 30 is the deadline for early registration ($10 extra after that.)

The First Annual Last June 18, 2005 Bike Ride is tomorrow. It starts
and finishes from the Lockheed Martin parking lot at 0900 and will tour
Mathias Point. This is a very flat and secluded ride with some river
views and as alwyas there are different difficulty levels for different
abilities. Sue and I will be bringing our two grandsons so pack up
some chilluns and join us.

Traveling North on 301, Lockheed Martin is located in the Dahlgren
Technology Center about a mile before Gate "B". Pleanty of parking is
available. 16539 Commerce Drive is on the left side of Commerce
Drive...directly across the street from Northrup Grumman. I hope to
see you there.
