Update on the Rail Work and plans for this Saturday and Sunday   Message List

Note the progress on the tree trimming that Don and Andrew did this week at the end of this message.  Andrew, I think we sould dig down now to seat the ties in place and then back fill to finish up.  A couple of guys with picks can do it in short order.

I completed and mailed a grant application to NRHS just today to help us begin the restoration of the rails cars.  Warren and I met with the county to talk about the rail car move and we are clear on the process.  We will meet with them again next week to give htem the site plan and begin the applicatoin process.  As soon as that is done we will move the cars in a timely manner.  Expect to be complete by early June.

This Saturday: There are two old dying or dead pines that we need to remove at 605 on Saturday.  Chain Saw Work!  it won't take long to remove the two trees.  I will bring my tractor to begin to move about 60 ties to the gap and if that is completed then we will slide rails into position to continue this much needed task.

For future reference...we are planning to feed the scouts that Bruce White is leading back from New York City in July.  On July 13 we will feed them at the trail head at 605 and then they will ride on to Fredericksburg to finish the trip.  This is a great idea Bruce and I can't say enough about your efforts.  More about this later.

Bruce is conducting a race to condition the Fredericksburg Area Hig School Cycling Club; start time 1:00 pm, registration begins at 10:00 am.  If you can help out contact Bruce White at htcdigtree@....  They also have a practice ride Saturday at 1:00 pm, beginning at Curtis Park.

Sue and I will ride to Colonial Beach and return on Sunday at 1 PM.  All are welcome to join us if you cannot help Bruce.  Sue and I are training for the MS 150 at the end of May.

After the July 13 event the Friends will take the rest of the month of July and August off.  It is too hot to do heavy labor then and we all need a vacation.  There will be work parties during that time to keep the vegetation down along the trail but no large work parties except as necessary.

We will begin to work this Saturday at 9 AM at 605.  Bring your saws, rakes and backs.  We'll have loads of fun.  Feel free to speak up if I have missed or overlooked something.

vty,
dj

Subject: Rail Work

Dave and Warren,
Don and I worked on the railroad for four hours this beautiful morning and we cleared a lot of limbs and trees, all the way from the West EOT to the East EOT now has excellent clearance. When Don has his tractor over here next time he will take down all the trees on the southside of the "bridge" much like the northside is. We need to spray the entire length soon; the new sprouts aren't so much a concern as the older stuff we weren't able to cut with the pole saw. Is Mr. Williams the trails resident sprayer? What are your thoughts of temporarily mounting the sprayer and tank on the brand new push cart to do this task?
While working a couple who stopped by the tent at Alum Springs on Sunday visited with their dog. There was also a gentleman riding his bike-who knew there was so much traffic on Thursday? Also, I noticed someone had been playing with the switch and it was aligned for the siding, however not locked. So I threw it back for the main. As I checked the points there was a beautiful 3' black rat snake hiding behind them-I wonder if he threw the switch to get some shade?
Sometime next week Don is going to bring some of the materials down to get a gauge on how much the railbed needs to come down, we debated the entire day whether it would be better to dig out each tie individually or plow the entire length-7" down is a lot.
Take Care,
Andrew Morris
