Randall,
Charles Duke mentioned grant money being available for signage,
trailhead kiosks and such. I think OEF has written grants for this
at some of the trails in OKC. I think he's mentioned this to the
park folks, but not sure. I think the $$ was federal or private but
was reserved for this type of use. I think oef bought their tools &
trailer by writing such a proposal. So, maybe drop a line to
charles.
I'll probably be out at keystone sometime sunday am, not sure yet.
Also, late commenting, but feb 9th sounds like a good day for a trail
day.

I just got back from a meeting with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers at Keystone. I was getting all the race stuff approved for this spring. After that, I was approached about the Mountain bike trail. They have walked the trail and liked what they saw. but they have some concerns.

They released a dozen dangers snakes in this area just the summer before last. Just letting you all know.
Some of us would like to get together for a group ride this weekend. would Saturday be cool about 10 am. Let me know!

The guy from MTBR wasn't whining, or suggesting that we dumb down the trail for him. He was pointing out that riders get cruising along and when the turn sneaks up on them they tend to skid. This is bad for the trail, and more work for us as the maintenance crew. We should look at placing an obstacle before the turn to slow people down beforehand. Just a log or maybe some rocks. We can talk about this at the work day, when we can go out and look at the section.
BTW, wil anyone be riding the trails this weekend? Let me know.
Subject: RE: [keystoneoffroad] feb 9th trail day and trail review???
Great reviews!!! Shows how hard everyone has worked.
As far the very tight loop on the intermediate loop....I think everyone may already know I don't think all the trail should be easy. I don't think rocks should be removed or alternate routes made around difficult sections. A rider can't improve on skills if they don't challenge themselves with more technical trails. If this is the only part of the trail found to be a inconvenient, I say leave it. It is an intermediate trail. Just my two cents.
I will try to make the trail work day on Feb 9 and do whatever the trailmasters want.

K.O.R.S. members and friends,
Here are some reviews of the Keystone Trails that Charles sent me:
All are very favorable but one person talked about the very tight turns on the intermediate loop. I think we all know where this is. Does it warrant taking a look at. any suggestions? all-in-all very very good reviews!
Also, Does any one object to having the next trail/ work day Sunday, February 9th?
There are some beavers (yes beavers) help us cut a few trees down out there. There will be nothing major for the next work/trail. a little stump clean up and turn twiking.
That's it.
We also, need to have a club meeting about where we are at and the upcoming Keystone race. Let me know your thoughts.

IMHO:
I think that we should concentrate our efforts on refining and improving the
trail that we already have. Tough sections of trail are not necessarily bad;
they're just tough. I'll probably live to regret such a pompous attitude,
but I'm not inclined to spend my weekend breaking new trail for one guy (or
gal?) who whined on MTBR.
The trail layout is great like it is. I think that there are plenty of other
issues that NEED addressing. What comes to mind, immediately, to me, is the
abundance of stobs that have been left uncut in what I think was the larger
of the loops. It's not glamorous work, but it needs doing.
Someone will have to show me where this obnoxious tight section is...
---
but one person talked about the very tight turns on the intermediate loop. I
think we all know where this is. Does it warrant taking a look at. any
suggestions?

What was I thinking, we don't need two rides just one I'll just start coming out to yours on my single speed. then, I go on the road ride later. Monday is my usual day for riding/patrolling Keystone. I shouldn't commit to Sunday when I know I will be racing every Sunday when the season starts.
Just wanted to know if anyone on the list thought we should be doing more to start an off-road training ride? after April our kids rides start and I will more then likely trying to ride with the school kids on Saturdays or after school on the weekdays. I am looking forward to that.
Yea, Eric, I am out of time on the Feb. 23th race. I need some expert help on the give a way stuff. I didn't want any thing big or showy just a tube or patch kit for a few of the guys who bothered showing up. I was asking the local Sand Springs business for vouchers or key chains with there logos on it "you know" that kind of free stuff. I know how nice getting that tire level set was at roman nose and the tubes at Elk City. Hey, I even wanted to win that toaster from the State crit. yea! I remember that kind of stuff and don't mind parting with the $20 (too bad). but I also know the promoter tried and went the extra distance. Now, that I am on the other side of the free stuff I know just how hard it is to get it. ouch! it takes a lot more then my own contacts it takes a whole club. --Here is what I have collected so far.....
2 jerseys from gearlink.com, a few odd kors t-shirts and hats, one nice yellow mountain bike jersey, a couple of things from crank brothers, and I might throw in one of my NEW unused heart monitors and of course the awards are almost done and were almost free. I still haven't finished working the local sand springs shops yet.
The better we can make it the more people will come next year and year after that!
Subject: Re: [keystoneoffroad] member drive starts now!
Randall, If you want givaways for the race I can probably scare some up from a few sources. I'll see what I can do tomorrow, since it's slow at the shop right now. I'm still riding at Turkey mtn on Saturday mornings at 7. I know it's early, but I have to be at the shop at 10. A Sunday ride at Keystone would be cool, but it may take a while to catch on. I've been doing the Saturday ride since summer and I still only get a couple of guys from the shop or TPT. If there is to be a single speed ride, I would be more than happy to be it's leader. I usually ride the ss on Saturday mornings, but none of the other shop guys have them. So if anyone has any ideas for a good day, let me know. Hello members and friends of K.O.R.S.,
I hope you got to see the nice newpaper story about K.O.R.S. and the
Keystone trails in /Thursday's Tulsa World.
I am attemping to gain new members by mailing letters and membership
forms so if you hear or know of anyone who may be interested let's
get them signed up. We need a few more jersey orders before we can
place the order. If you want to know what the jerseys will look like
I uploaded a picture of them on our egroup files.
Just go to your "my groups" hyper text and click on it. then click
on "keystoneoffroad" and look for a hyper text that says "photos" You
can upload your own photos too. Also a text only race flyer is under
the "Files" hyper text on this same page. We don't have a web site so
this e-group will have to do for now.I will upload a membership form
later today.
Also, I am seeking "give a ways and samples" from as many bicycle
related companies as I can. Russell is helping me write the letters
so if any of you know of a company that would like to sponsor one of
our events let me know. I have not ask the local bike shop to donate
because I have ask them to help us promote membership in the club
formost and believe that is all we should ask of them right now. I
don't know how some of you feel about letting a local bike shop
sponsor us when there are a lot more then one willing to help. I
guess I am just trying to play it safe and not say too much right
now. I don't want to alian any one shop for the other. I like them
all. Eric has help the group at a lot and I think I need to talk to
him about this. I'll ask around and try to come up with a policy.
On another subject.... Eric are you still doing the Saturday Turkey
ride? Do you want one of us to do a Sunday Keystone ride? I am
willing to host it, if the group thinks it would be supported. I'll
even do a single speed ride. or at else until my legs fall off!
Keep rokin the bike!
Randall
This is the news paper article that was written about the Keystone off-road society and the Keystone trails. I hope you like it. I have been getting calls on it this morning.
If it did not get in your Tulsa World it is because it comes in the small part of the paper called Community World the "West side" addition. If you live on the south side you will not get this article. Hey, it is better then nothing and I think it will help us. They also said they would like to do a follow up story. later this summer.

Just curious, is the Keystone race part of the Tour de Dirt? Also wondering if it is a Norba event? Thx, Chris

I got the Gear link guy to donate a couple of jerseys to give a way at the Keystone race but turned his off down to give us team jerseys. I believe you are right about that..I just didn't want to turn it down without some one else agreeing with the decision.
The Keystone trail is in great conduction despite the snow but the parking lot is a little soft. If the gates are closed it is because of the parking lot. The trail is open and in great shape. We are setting the next trail day for February. I will fill you all in later on which day.
Don't forget about the great new spring series in March (16th and 30th) and the Mountain bike race at Keystone Feb.23 to benefit the trail. I am getting the paper work and details ready now. Flyers will all be mailed out in January along with the information about the "pair of Jack's" computortrainer race at Eastland mall Feb. 8th.
Subject: Re: [keystoneoffroad] Trail day once a month????
That sounds like a good idea. It assures that things will get done on a consistent basis, and shows the park staff that we are pulling our weight as far as maintenance. It will also keep erosion or other problems from getting out of hand like they have at Turkey mtn. 1st Sunday of the month sounds good to me. Also, if it's kept on a regular schedule, it will be easier for people to remember and plan for. Just my thoughts....Eric
Subject: [keystoneoffroad] Trail day once a month????
How are we going to handle trail work once all the trails are in for the winter.
Maybe, we can come up with a regular trail day like the first Sun of every month.. ON the days we didn't need to do much we could pick up trash or just have a training ride or race or club event. What are your thoughts on this.?. how do the other trails handle this???
I have people e-mailing me and wanting to know when they can get in on the trail work and that we need to start having trail days on Sunday because of the Bike shops and the Mountain biker who have to work on Saturday Dave Eric Adam etc.
Thoughts???

The Keystone trails are not closed, but they want us to stay off from the parking lot. I couldn't get my bike across the parking lot so I know my truck would have made it. It would sink....
The parking lot should be finished by next weekend!
I wouldn't forget about you Eric! If Raton gets a SS that will be 3 of us on KORS racing SS. That means we have to have a SS category at our racers. Beside Mannford is the perfect SS course.
The Categories will be:Expert, Sport, and Beginner (Sr, m1, m2, GM) Single Speed, Women, Juniors, Clydesdales and a kids race. That is for both the races next year.
The awards neat good too! At keystone we are giving pottery plagues with a Mtber jumping in Situate. At the Dog Days Mtb race we are giving DOG Bones with all the information stamped in them Not real dog bones but real looking ones.
We finished up the re-route at the cliff area today! It looks really good. Raton and Brandon Did it. I was there but wasn't doing much. Where you ride up there take a look at the down hill wide turn on the 4th loop and see if you think it needs anything..
Subject: [keystoneoffroad] add to the 2003 schedule
K.O.R.S. with the help of "a Pair Of Jacks Promotion" is having a Keystone Mountain Bike race February, 23rd 2003 so put that on your calendars( plus a lot of warm clothes)
There will be awards, merchandise, and cash prizes. Flyers will be available this weekend. Any profits go to buy more tools to help maintain the trail.
The KORS group is also putting on a Mountain Bike race in August for the city of Mannford's centennial called the dog days of summer festival. Be looking for that.

Saturday Dec. 7th was the Fourth Official Trail/Work Day at Keystone State Park. We had another great turn out. Most of the people listed below have been to all the trail/work days. We completed our goal of finishing the forth EXPERT loop. There are too many wild and very technical sessions to mentions, but a very fast cutback and a climb that is breath taking (in more ways then one) are just two reasons this trail will be very popular . (Hint) Remember, this trail is designed to be ridden clock wise.
If you ride and like the Keystone trail system please seek these people out and THANK them. They are the force that brought the Tulsa area a great new Mountain Bike trail.
