This Saturday will all kick off when the Junior Ravens' Under 13s take on a powerful Mitcham Bulls side at home on Eltham Palace Road at 11:30am, However please note that because of Half term holiday Thornton Heath Tornadoes have been forced to call off the matches against our Under 9s and Under 11s.

Then it'll be the turn of the ravens women to take the field as they look to continue their great start to the season when they face reigning champions West London Sharks again at Eltham Palace Road, kick off is at 12:30 and all players need to be at ground for at least 11:30am.

Then to cap the day off the men will be looking to continue their advance to the top of the RLC south-East league when then take on St. Albans Centurions (a national league 3 club), this experienced side should provide stiff opposition for the Ravens men as the two sides set to clash on Saturday at 2:30pm with the Ravens again at home.

Please do not forget to Join the Ravens mailing list:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kentravens/join and also the message board on the web site.

Ravens Sink Admirals

Kent Ravens 34 Greenwich Admirals 18

With the rain lashing down the Ravens dominated the match against local rivals Greenwich through their powerful forwards, but the game could have been so different after the Ravens let Greenwich in for a early try from Ben Medhurst within the opening five minutes but as James Hardy added to extras for the visitors the Ravens turned back on and brought together the skills that have won the last two away matches. Great work out wide from Jason Oliver set up second row Michael Walton against a Greenwich winger and there was no contest as Walton breezed past to notch up the Ravens first points, Kent kept the pressure on to put skill debutant Bobby Connolly over for more points to give unfazed substitute Tom Claridge a difficult kick for the extra points, Raven up 10 to 6. The tactics for Kent changed when they brought on Richard Williams and Darren Griffin to change the pack from strength to more mobile, but it was a 5th tackle kick straight into touch from the Admirals that set the Ravens up for the next try as Captain Drummond worked well with stand off Richard Whelan sent man of the match Richard Paddick over the white wash and Whelan added the extras to send the teams in at the break with a score line of 16 – 6 to the Ravens.

The second half started of the same way the first did as the Admirals scored within minutes of the restart through skilful scrum half Jack Webb and Hardy again added the extras. But without any hesitation the Ravens came back at the Admirals with an early high kick from Whelan sailed high and wide for Claridge to claim, evade the opposition wing and score in the corner to give him self on of the most difficult conversions, right on the touch line forcing him to run up from in the crowd, as usual he made it look easy 22 – 12 to Kent and even though Greenwich got another 6 pointer from Hardy there was not way back for them. As The Kent side made there determination show as John Richardson added a try and to finish the match off in style full back Constantine Hatzidakis out paced the Greenwich defence out side to produce Kent Ravens most impressive display this season with a 34 – 18 win that moves the side up to second in the table with only Broadstairs ahead of them on points difference only.

Next week the Ravens men take on St Albans at home at 2:30pm

Ravens Women tame the bears

Kent Ravens Women 26 Coventry Bears 22

The Ravens women took early control over the travelling Bears, even with 11 debutants in the squad the Ravens were able to open up a 20 – 8 lead in the first half with three tries from unstoppable prop Hebe West and one from centre Carolyn Waugh, the extra conversions were added by Victoria Instone and debutant Hannah Grant but it was the strong defence and organisation from captain Becky Ballance and vice captain Anna Plews that kept the Ravens in the game in the second Half as even though the Bears had a player sent off the pressure mounted on the Ravens as Coventry pegged back the scores, but just as the Bears were one score away from levelling the match Claire Carver worked an opening to send West over for our fourth of the match and Grant added the extras. There was just enough time for the Bear to peg back one more score and bring the teams to within 4 points of each other but great defensive work from all the Ravens meant they hung on to a 26 – 22 score line to record the first win the Ravens Women’s team and give them a winning start to the 2006 London League.

Next week the Ravens men take on reigning Champions West London Sharks at home at 1:00pm, for further information please see www.kentravens.co.uk or call 07707 852 952

Travelling Ravens win again

Haringey Hornets 4 vs. Kent Ravens 34

After a dramatic win the week before, the Ravens showed their skills as they outclassed the Haringey Hornets. The Ravens, suffering many injuries and unavailable players selected six teenagers in their first team but this did not upset the team rhyme as Captain Ewen Drummond strolled in for the opening try of the match with the first few minutes, while 16 year old stand off Tom Claridge added the extras with the first of his 7 from 7 kicks in the match.

The Ravens continued to put the Hornets under pressure with Vice captain John Richardson smashing his way over to grab another try and the extra points were added again. But with half time coming up the Kent side let down their guard for one second to let Haringey register their only points of the game with a try, however Haringey became too eager with the break coming up and gave away two penalties for Claridge to add the ravens score, half time the scores were Haringey 4, Kent 16.

With an inspirational speech from Edward Easter at half time, the Ravens came out with all guns blazing and soon tries were added from John Richardson (6 tries in 4 games now) and speedy prop Monish Shome. But the best try of the match was left till last, as the ravens soaked up another strong Haringey attack on their line; Kent forced another knock on from the hornets after another bone crushing attack from Tom Rogerson. Great work from first Hywel Gosling and then the power from Richard Williams gave man of the match John Brown space from the off load to evade three would be tacklers and take the ball 40 metres up the pitch, the long looping pass found 16 year old Aiden Oakley on the wing who drove inside but with two Haringey players ahead of him he put the chip kick over them and then won the race to ground the ball, Claridge again added the extra points and the final whistle went as the ravens players celebrated a great win 34 points to 4, which takes the Ravens to 3rd in the table with only points difference separating them from 1st.

This great weekend for the Ravens continued, as the Under 13s also travelled away to Brentwood Elvers and they came back with a stunning 44 points to 8 win, Harry Rogers, Sam Cannon and Ben Abbott all got a brace of tries, while vice captain Tom Jewers added 4 goals. But it was left to man of match James Jewers to grab his hat trick in he’s first outing for the Ravens.

Next weekend will see the Kent Ravens take on local rivals Greenwich Admirals at home (Eltham Palace Road) at 2:30pm with the Under 13s taking on Mitcham Bulls and the Women’s team in their first outing this year against Coventry Bears playing before.

The Ravens are also urging all members and supporter to be at the club on Saturday 27th May, as their will be a ground breaking announcement regarding the Club next season made in the club house at 6:00pm.

Ravens win in dramatic style

A fascinating clash of two strong clubs, saw the Ravens men’s squad end their losing streak and shoot them up the table. But with only seconds remaining on the clock the match was all level.

The Ravens started off strongly with great work from captain Ewen Drummond against Hemel Hempstead as prop John Richardson continued his run of a tru in every match so far when his powerful storming run ended with a try under the posts which Tom Claridge then added to extra points too, but the Stags soon came back at Kent after great work from a scrum close the Ravens line by hemel’s Danny Stock to send Dave Mascal over for a try, ravens then added more points from debutant Hywel Goslings first try of the game and then the extras were added again by Claridge but half time got closer Hemel got back into the match with two tries one from Ashley Fyson but luckily for the Ravens hemel’s stand off wasn’t having a great day, missing all the chances of adding extra points. Man of the Match Richard Paddick punished the stags for this, by adding his fourth try of the season just on half time to send the teams in with the kent side 16 points to 12 up.

The second half started in disaster for the Ravens as outstanding forward Vince Kwok dislocated his shoulder during a powerful tackle but this seemed to spur the team on as they opened up a massive lead when Hywel Gosling got his second try of the game, but Hemel came back to level the score at 20 a piece and it looked like that would be the final score until, with only second remaining Hemel cut Vice Captain Darren Griffin down illegally with a high tackle to give Claridge an easy chance to a two point penalty to the Ravens tally. But the drama wasn’t quite finished there, when the Ravens pack was driven into touch from the resulting kick off but when Hemel didn’t pack down to get the clock stopped the referee blew for full time to give the Ravens their first win in the second round of the RLC.

The same time all this was going on the Junior Ravens’ Under 9s and Under 11s teams were playing in the Harlequins RL Festival at the Twickenham Stoop prior to Harlequins versus Bradford Bulls, unfortunately both sides did not make it into the finals of the festival and the under 9s ended with Jack Halstead as their top scorer and Andrew Tulloch-Foley took the same honour for the Under 11s.

Next weekend will see the Kent Ravens youth take on Brentwood Elvers away while the men’s 1st team go on their travels again to play Haringey Hornets at 2:30pm. Early Mistakes ruin ravens opener

The Kent Ravens battled away in the first ever Kent Derby in a National league in Rugby League, as the two promoted team: last season’s London League Plate and overall champions did battle at Eltham Palace Road.

However it was strong Power from the Broadstairs pack and centres out wide that controlled the early exchanges and produced the first try as the game ticked past the 10 minute mark, but the Ravens battled back when prop John Richardson made his mark have just coming on to bring the score back to 4-6.

With only fifteen minutes until half time to Ravens, became too eager to score producing knock-on’s and missed tackles, the Bulldogs edged away from the Home side to enter the break up 4-24.

The Ravens came out for the second half looking the stronger team after strong words from stand in Captain Drummond and injured vice captain Ed Easter. But great pressure from the Bulldogs wide centres meant Broadstairs added to their tally. The Ravens continued to fight as the second half swung from one team to the next, and Kent make the pressure pay when Richard Paddick added a try and Tom Claridge added the extra points from the conversion.

The final 25minutes of the match saw Broadstairs soak up the Ravens pressure and the game finished on 24 point to 10.

Next weekend will see the Kent Ravens youth take enter the Harlequins Tournament at the Twickenham Stoop while the men’s 1st team will be travelling up to play Hemel Hempstead Stags at 2:30pm. Only one match this weekend for the Kent Ravens, However this match could turn out to be one of the most important in 2006 for the Kent Ravens Men's first XIII as they take on current LARL Champions Broadstairs Bulldogs at home tomorrow. The add more fuel to the match, this will also be the first ever Derby between two Kent based clubs within a national league and the Ravens will be looking for revenge as the Bulldogs powered to two impressive wins of them in 2005.

The match kick off at 3:00pm this Saturday (6th May 2005) at Eltham Palace Road, Eltham SE9 5LX and entry is free to everyone, and already the Ravens are expecting a large crowd to support their men in the first RLC match, so hopefully we'll see you then.

Kent Ravens Men's first team came close in their first pre-season friendly of 2006, when they narrowly lost out 44 points to 34 away to determined Bedford Tigers. The Ravens who entered this game with ten players on debut with four tennagers in teh ranks too went behind early from the kick off when Bedford scored under the posts, however helped with a sin binning for an illegal tackle the Ravens took control in the first half with tries from powerful Prop John Richardson, two from speedy debutant Ben Seru and winger Alex Hatzidakis. The second half was a close affair and unfortunately the Tigers took the lead with a controversial try but injuries and inexperience took their toll on the Ravens when Bedford took charge early in the second half, but tries from new signing Edward Easter, another two from Seru and a hat trick of goals from Stand off Darren Griffin pegged the Kent side back and finished the match on a high note however the match finished with a win for the home side.

The men's first team have their next pre-season friendly at home This Saturday, 29th April 2006 with a kick off at 2:30pm at our home ground on the corner of Eltham Palace Road and Middle Park avenue, entry is FREE to everyone, so hopefully you can all make it to see the Kent Ravens take on Southend Seaxes in their debut match.

Dartford council press release:-

Darts' Stadium could offer Rugby League excitement during summer

Dartford Football Club's new stadium at Princes Park could be offering sporting excitement all-year-round year if discussions with a growing rugby league team are successful.

The Kent Ravens, who currently play in Eltham, have approached the Council with a request to play at Princes Park during the football closed-season from Summer 2007. The arrangement would ensure that the stadium is busy right through the year.

Cllr Jeremy Kite, Leader of Dartford Borough Council, says discussions are still at an early stage but the opportunity of a summer sport at Princes Park would be hugely beneficial for the football club and the whole of Dartford.

"Dartford Football Club's new ground is simply superb and deserves to be in use during the four summer months when football is out of season. The Kent Ravens could be an ideal solution and ensure the stadium offers family sport all through the year. Naturally, the interests of the football club come first but the pitch suppliers have told us that the ground is more than capable of handling the use."

Alan Bacon, Chairman of Kent Ravens, says of the potential benefits:

"Princes Park is a hugely exciting project and we're pleased to be having these with discussions with Jeremy and his colleagues. This is something we hope will propel us into the national leagues within a few years whilst at the same time bringing the sport to the town.

We're very much a family friendly, community-based, club, with teams at all age groups and the only women's team in south east London and Kent."

Dear All,

Sorry it is very late to inform you, however I've been told that south London Storm have had to cry off of tomorrow's pre-season friendly with our men's team due to a lack of available players (probably caused by our early kick off so not to clash with the rugby union matches).

So I'm afraid there is nothing on tomorrow now, Hopefully we'll see you all at fitness training at the club on Monday night (7:30pm) and then on Wednesday night training at 7:30pm also.
