Learn from Neil Henry on RLCM DVD
"There are different shapes that you can use. Some teams use two block runners on the outside with an inside support. It gives you opportunities to tip the ball back on the inside to drop someone off on the inside, a man on the inside or, to play to one of two options on the outside and then have a sweeper out the back as well." Taylor assembles players
By Dean Ritchie

SOUTH Sydney reassembled at Erskineville Oval yesterday to begin preparing for the 2007 NRL season.

New coach Jason Taylor spoke with the players about his expectations for the coming season and his fitness requirements.

New buys Dean Widders, Daniel Irvine and Jeremy Smith were there but missing were David Kidwell, Roy Asotasi and Nigel Vagana because of Tri-Nations commitments.

Souths will start official on-field training on November 6.

"I spoke to them about how we'll look at things and what expectations we have of the players," Taylor said.

"The Souths players from this year and the players who came to us that didn't play in the finals, have had their mandatory six weeks off.

"We just wanted to let them know that they will now be available for (fitness) testing but it won't be that they have to come in every day.

"Today was really just doing a bit of housekeeping. We also introduced to the players some new staff."

Club co-owner Peter Holmes A Court and new physiotherapist Erroll Alcott attended yesterday's meeting.

"We are looking for professionalism - we will treat the players that way and they are comfortable with that," Taylor said.

Taylor arrives at Souths after his history-making season with Parramatta this year when he became the first caretaker coach in rugby league history to guide a team into the finals.

"I'm really excited about coming to Souths," Taylor said.

"Things are happening here - the joint is going forward.

"I've been given the support I need so that means I can rip in and do the job." Daily Telegraph Online

Tri-Nations warm-up key - Morley
Prop Adrian Morley insists Great Britain's match against a Newcastle Select XIII on Friday is vital to their Tri-Nations preparation. The Lions open their Tri-Nations campaign against New Zealand in Christchurch on 28 October.

"It's really important that we have a real solid hit-up and get the combinations working," said Morley.

"Newcastle will come out firing. For some, it's a once in a life-time chance to play a touring international side."

Few names in the Newcastle side will be recognisable to the Lions players, but Morley said this could actually make for a tougher encounter.

"It probably makes it harder," said Morley, who will join Warrington from the Sydney Roosters next season and is suspended for Friday's match.

"Even the best players in the world, if you can watch footage of them, you can get a better understanding of how they play.

"With unknown players, you don't know what they're going to do - they could be a handful."

The Great Britain side will be made up almost exclusively of the players already in Australia who were not involved in the Super League Grand Final.

Morley predicted: "I don't think they'll figure too much - if they do, a couple of them might be on the bench and just get 20 minutes."

With a number of debutants in the Lions squad, three uncapped players will be on show against the Newcastle side as they attempt to lay claim to a Test spot.

Huddersfield winger Martin Aspinwall, second-rower Gareth Hock and prop Andy Coley will get a chance to impress coach Brian Noble.

And the coach will also be looking at the form of some of his more experienced players such as Newcastle Knights winger Brian Carney, prop Stuart Fielden and Jamie Peacock. BBC Online

Development work in Estonia
London Centurions went on a rugby league/cultural tour to Tallinn, capital of Baltic state Estonia, over the weekend. The trip, organised by Ken Edwards, involved the meeting of two very different cultures.

Fifteen enthusiastic London Centurions set out early from Stanstead on Friday arriving in Tallinn to be greeted by head of Estonian Rugby League, John Slade.

The trip focused on a coaching clinic run by the Cents on Saturday, attended by many enthusiastic locals juniors, women and members of the Estonian National side.

The clinic was concluded by a game of tag which was great fun for all who participated.

The team went onto view the Super League Grand Final and sample the cultural delights of the city.
