Learn from Neil Henry on RLCM DVD
"There are different shapes that you can use. Some teams use two block runners on the outside with an inside support. It gives you opportunities to tip the ball back on the inside to drop someone off on the inside, a man on the inside or, to play to one of two options on the outside and then have a sweeper out the back as well." Jonah Lomu decision not about money

By Pat McLeod

IF Jonah Lomu comes to the Gold Coast to play rugby league it will not be for the money but for the love of the game.

The rugby union giant has always let his football exploits do the talking but after being hobbled by years of ill-health and injuries, yesterday it was his wife and manager Fiona who spoke up.

Fiona Lomu said her husband's motivation to play rugby league was based on his passion for sport.

"The guy has achieved amazing things in his career and has nothing to prove," she said.

"He just loves the game and loves to play. He says that is the reason he plays, because he loves it, not for any other reason.

"You don't play it to prove anything, or for the money or for the people.

"He just loves the game."

Facing the biggest decision of his life, a swap from rugby union to rugby league, possibly to the Gold Coast Titans, Lomu was quiet, almost shy, after being wooed all day by the Coast club.

"I am really happy to be here. A decision is still a huge way off," was all he said.

The rugby icon wasn't being difficult, just humble.

Fiona stepped up to the plate.

"Today was just about coming and having a look and to get a feel for the Gold Coast," she said.

"We were a little worried when we first arrived because it looked more like the Grey Coast but now the sun has come out and it is beautiful, really lovely."

During the Titans' five-year run into a position in the National Rugby League, the club's managing director Michael Searle has butted heads with plenty of sharp lawyers and player agents.

Yesterday, he faced a softly spoken sporting giant and his attractive wife.

Fiona was obviously impressed.

"The Titans are a great bunch of guys, very professional," she said.

"They seem to be very committed to setting up a strong club in every aspect. They seem to be doing all the right things."

Fiona said both she and her husband were 'happy with the day', but a decision on the 73-Test veteran's future would not be rushed.

"There certainly won't be any decision made today, there has not been any offers put on the table," she said.

"We certainly won't be rushed into anything. We are considering a number of options and we will make a decision when we are ready but we are talking a few weeks rather than the next 24 hours.

"Jonah has a degree of interest in league. I couldn't say what the chances are of us living on the Gold Coast next year but it is a viable option."

Lomu still has the physical aura of the man that dominated world rugby with his powerhouse running for the All Blacks through the 1990s.

Outwardly there appear no signs of the serious illness that curtailed the career of the first rugby superstar of the professional era.

At the end of 1996, Lomu was diagnosed as having nephrotic syndrome, a rare and serious kidney disorder.

He had a kidney transplant in July, 2004.

Lomu returned to the playing field in 2005, but has since had serious shoulder and ankle injuries and was unable to attract a Super 14 contract for 2007.

Yesterday, Fiona said her husband's fitness was 'great'.

"If there was a game on now and he was available he would be out there," she said.

Headache for Willie

By Steve Mascord

AUSTRALIAN prop Willie Mason is in doubt for Saturday's return Tri-Nations bout against New Zealand on Saturday after pulling out of training yesterday with bleeding from the nose and a severe headache.

Mason was named yesterday in coach Ricky Stuart's side for the Telstra Dome grudge match after scans cleared him of a crack to the right eye socket.

However, the Bulldogs giant has been suffering migraines and dizziness this week in the wake of his much-publicised collision with Kiwi forward David Kidwell.

"Basically he's had a whack in the head and today at training he suffered bleeding from the nostril which is not that surprising," team doctor Hugh Hazard said.

"It's like anything, it will be a matter of observation over the next few days. If it doesn't settle down, he won't play."

The drama compounds a week of tension following the Australians' bruising first-up win.

Hazard was called from a sideline conversation to attend to Mason 20 minutes from the end of a long, physical training run.

After conferring with the doctor, Mason sat out the rest of the session alongside fellow props Mark O'Meley and Petero Civoniceva who trained separately because of niggling injuries.

As Mason fought to be fit for the what is being billed as his square-up with Melbourne's Kidwell:

. Australia called up one player who had turned down the Kiwis, Anthony Tupou, for his debut on Saturday while another Kiwi conscientious objector, Antonio Kaufusi, joined the squad.

. The green-and-golds' coach held talks with referees boss Robert Finch about aspects of British referee Ashley Klein's style, including the 10m.

. Lock Reni Maitua, ruled out for the rest of the tournament with an ankle injury, hit out at Cairns-born NZ fullback Brent Webb for turning his back on Australia.

. Stuart said Mason would "keep his mouth shut" during the haka this week.

Team changes made by the Kangaroos involved Sydney Roosters' Tupou coming on to the bench, with reserve Andrew Ryan moving into the second row and Luke O'Donnell shunted to lock.
