Pro-Active Timing
The average person today, much of the time, is a reactor. Every time he
or she experiences a stimulus, his or her thoughts and behaviors run
down the same course of action. This link to action as based on cause
and effect makes this individual predictable, weak and ineffective. By
simply reacting to a situation, it is he or she that is controlled by
the environment. In addition, they are not able to change to suit
evolving conditions. This type of behavior intensifies conflict and
builds resistance. When two reactive types meet, the spiral of conflict
intensifies and aggression is countered by more counter aggression, and
eventually to violence that injures both parties.
The warrior, on the other hand, looks at each conflict with fresh eyes.
Using knowledge of the past without being held to it, this individual
understands that while the initial reaction may indeed be the
appropriate response, it could also be impulsive, foolish or
reactionary. The key is in inserting some reflection, creativity and
intelligence between stimulus and response. Try to observe your
reactions to things from another point of view. Do you respond the same
way every time someone threatens your territory or disagrees with your
position? Is your behavior predictable? As you begin to look at your
reactions, you will also begin to look at the stimulus and response in
a different light as well. Time and patience are great traits for the
modern warrior.
