The Eastside Volleyball Club, based in East Peoria, Illinois,
is proud to again host the 2nd Annual Illinois State Girls High
School
All-Star Volleyball Tournament. This spectacular event will be held
on November 18-19, 2000, in East Peoria, at the Eastside Centre. The
open practice sessions will take place on November 18, 2000, with the
competition culminating on Sunday, November 19, 2000. After our
selection process is completed, we anticipate that the event will
feature over 200 of the best senior high school volleyball players
from Illinois. The event committee has been working diligently
throughout the summer to secure the coaching staff for the 18 teams
that will compete during this event, and have nearly finalized all of
those positions. The coaches representing the 675 schools that have
been selected and division make-up can be seen at WWW.EASTSIDEVB.COM.
We are very proud to report that last year's event featured over 140
athletes, and was a showcase event to over 100 collegiate coaches.
The
event last year and also this year will feature a genuine partnership
between the Eastside Volleyball Club and Adidas.
The notifications to the High School coaches have been sent
out and those coaches are currently being asked to nominate (2) two
senior players that they feel deserve the honor to compete in this
event. The deadline for the return of nominations is September 22,
2000. The event group will then process the applications and forward
them to the selection committee members for their perusal prior to
the
actual selection date of September 30, 2000. If the athlete is
selected as a participant, a letter will immediately be sent out
congratulating them, and asking for a confirmation of participation
to
be sent back by October 15, 2000.

USPV TAKES MATCH NUMBER 2
FROM AUSTRALIA
CHICAGO, Ill. – In the second match of a three-match series
between
the "USPV Dream Team" and the Australian Women's National
Team, the
USPV scored a victory, winning three straight games: 25-17, 26-24
and 26-24.
USPV outside hitter Therese Crawford led the attack with 19 kills and
outside hitter Elsa Stegemann added 10 kills. Middle blocker Kelly
Kennedy, a native of Barrington Hills, and outside hitter Jenny Manz
tallied seven kills apiece. Local setter Bonnie Bremner, from Lisle,
Ill., contributed 40 assists. Defensively, libero Colleen Neels had
10 digs followed by Crawford with nine and Stegemann adding eight.
Crawford registered the only solo block for the USPV.
"We did reduce our serving errors from the last match, but we
started
off slow in each game," said Head Coach Arie Selinger. "For
the last
match, we need to stay focused and capitalize on our scoring
opportunities," added Selinger.
"The last two games of the match were too close for comfort,"
commented Therese Crawford. "Defensively, I thought we played
fairly
well, but our attack needed to be more consistent," Crawford
added.
Approximately 250 fans attended the second exhibition match between
the USPV and Australia at Hoffman Estates High School. The two teams
pair off at James Madison Memorial High School in Madison, Wis., at
7:00 p.m on July 8. The Australian National Team included the USPV
training camp as they make their way back to Sydney for the Summer
Olympics later this year. Visit the USPV website at www.uspv.com for
more information on stats and the upcoming matches.
The USPV is a women's professional, six-on-six, indoor volleyball

USPV EARNS A VICTORY OVER THE
TEAM FROM `DOWN UNDER'
CHICAGO, Ill. – In the opening match of a three-match series
between
the "USPV Dream Team" and the Australian Women's National
Team, the
USPV took home a victory, winning three straight games: 25-20, 25-18
and 25-15.
USPV outside hitters Therese Crawford and Elsa Stegemann led the
attack with 13 kills a piece and local setter Bonnie Bremner, from
Lisle, Ill., added 32 assists. Defensively, Stegemann contributed 14
digs followed by Crawford with nine and libero Jennifer Wrightson
adding seven. Middle blocker Kelly Kennedy, a native of Barrington
Hills, tallied two solo blocks and teammates Yang Zhe, Crawford and
Stegemann each had a solo block to solidify the USPV defense.
"The match was a learning experience for this team, we saw the
areas
we need to improve upon for the next match," said Head Coach Arie
Selinger. "We need to reduce our serving errors and our attack
needs
to be more consistent. I believe our defense earned us this
victory," added Selinger.
"I know we provided Australia with a challenge tonight. They
will
see teams like us and even better in the Sydney Olympics so tonight,
we gave them a taste of what is to come," commented Elsa
Stegemann. "I thought our defense was solid but we had too many
service errors and which will need improvement for us to bring home
another win," Stegemann added.
Approximately 300 fans attended the first exhibition match between
the USPV and Australia at Naperville North High School. The two
teams pair off at Hoffman Estates High School in Hoffman Estates,
Ill., at 7:00 p.m on July 7. On Saturday, July 8, the USPV and

WOMEN'S PRO VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT
INTRODUCES NEW PLAYING FORMAT
CHICAGO, Ill. - The United States Professional Volleyball League
(USPV) designed a new volleyball playing format to debut during
"The
Royal Neighbors of America USPV Millennium Cup, presented by ballgirl
athletic." Volleyball fans will witness a more technical game
during
the USPV tournament on May 8, 10, 12 and 13 in Louisville, Ky., St.
Louis, Mo., Milwaukee, Wis., and Chicago, Ill. Top teams from the
USPV, Japan and Poland are competing for a $60,000 purse - the
largest amount ever offered for women's indoor volleyball in the
U.S. The USPV format was designed and tested by Head Coach, Arie
Selinger and Jim Coleman, VP of Technical Affairs.
"The USPV format reduces the variance of playing time and creates
a
match lasting closer to 90 minutes, which is more attractive for
television coverage," USPV Head Coach Arie Selinger said.
"The new
concepts are designed to enhance the natural athleticism of
volleyball and maximize the dynamic, fast-paced action for
viewers,"
Selinger added.
The new USPV playing format includes:
A game/set format similar to tennis. Teams play a GAME up to 30
points and must win by two points. Each game is played using the
rally score system -- a point scored on each play. In order to win a
SET, a team must win two of three games and to win a MATCH, a team
must win two of three sets. GAME = 30 points, win by two. SET = two
of three games. MATCH = two of three sets.
If the set is split, the third game is a SHOOT OUT. In order to win
the shoot out, a team must earn seven points with rally scoring and
win by two points. There are no substitutions, no time-outs. The
libero player is allowed.
If each team wins one set, the third set is a TIE-BREAKER. A 15-
point rally-score is used. In the tie-breaker set, each team is
allowed two 30 second time-outs and six substitutions. The libero
player is allowed.
The LIBERO player is best described as a defensive specialist, who
can dig and pass, but cannot serve, block or hit. The hitter may not
attack if the libero overhand sets the ball in front of the three
meter line. The libero can come into the match at any time when the
ball is out of play, for any player and as many times as the coach
desires -- unlike the structured number of substitutions, and timing
of subbing for all other positions. The libero player is designated
by wearing a different color jersey than her teammates.
A BONUS attack is used. This means that any kill or hit from the
back row, by either a front row or a back row player, results in two
points.
The LET service rule is used. Thus, the serve that touches the net
is in play so long as it crosses over the net between the antennae or
their extensions.
The USPV is a women's professional, six-on-six, indoor volleyball
league representing some of the top volleyball players in the world
led by renowned volleyball coach, Arie Selinger. The USPV inaugural
season is scheduled to begin January 2001 with six to ten teams in
select cities throughout the Midwest. The USPV will operate as a
single entity league with team operators and the season will run from
January through April, with finals in May. With the launch of the
USPV, a women's league will precede a men's league for the
first time
in the history of professional sports. The official guide to the
tournament is located on the USPV website at www.uspv.com.
